Stars highlight area girls track and field BY TAYLOR LEHMAN For KPC Media Group
Here’s a look at all of the area girls track and field teams as their spring seasons begin. ANGOLA New Hornet coach Brad Peterson said his 2017 team is “as deep of a team (he’s) ever coached.” Angola returns versatile senior Ali Cranston, who finished third in sectional in the 300 hurdles, second as part of the Hornets’ 1,600 relay and first in pole vault. She would go on to finish 11th in the state as a vaulter, with a jump of 11 feet, 3 inches. Coming off a sectional title, Angola returns 10 individual top-five sectional performers from last season, including Sarah Brandt, who finished third in 110 hurdles and second with the 400 relay, and Anna-Bella Sawyer-Ewing, who broke off fifth in the 100, eighth in the 200 and second with the 400 relay. Senior Katlyn Brown will also be back to contribute in 2018 after finishing second in the high jump and eighth in the long jump at sectionals and fourth in the regional in the high jump. Peterson also looks forward to welcoming freshman mid-distance runner and jumper Hanna Knoll to the program. Peterson called Knoll a “freshman phenom.” EAST NOBLE The Knights return 85 percent of their 2017 point-scoring production, including nine of their top 10 scorers. Another year of growth and experience will assist head coach Andy Bell and the Knights in getting over the hump after they placed second in both the Northeast 8 Conference meet and the sectional last season. Lexie Moriarity returns after leading East Noble in scoring for two seasons and breaking school records in the 200-meter dash and the long jump. Moriarity was on the 800 relay with Lexy Rhodes, Kylie Garton and Anna Becker that broke the indoor school record at 1 minute, 53.17 seconds this season. The Knights also broke the distance medley relay school record in March, as Olivia Smolinske, Krista Boese, Kara Kline and Kayla McCulloch ran 13:30.81 indoors. Pahge Kline also returns as the team’s top thrower. She threw the eighth best shot put in school history last season and finished fifth in the Marion Regional, missing the outdoor state finals by one place. With their decorated returners and conference champion freshmen arriving in 2018, the Knights look to add to what
was a successful 7-2 dual season in 2017. DEKALB Seniors Lauren Beckmann and Tyler Schwartz will be catalysts in Dekalb’s girls track and field season in 2018. Finishing first and second in the sectional and regional last season, respectively, Beckmann and Schwartz both advanced to the state finals in the 3,200. Beckmann finished 10th in the state, while Schwartz did not finish. Both girls will be aiming for the same type of seasons in 2018. Aby Carey, who was part of the sectional-winning 3,200 relay in 2017, will look to compete in distance as well. Morgan Spade will continue to head Dekalb’s hurdles squad in 2018 as a senior after winning a sectional title in the 100 hurdles in 17.3 seconds. The 3,200 relay team that finished second at regionals and 25th at state returns three of its participants in Mady Snyder, Maya Smith and Beckmann. Junior Bethany Kelley will also be heading a sprints group that will feature a lot of competition from within throughout the season. Kelley finished seventh in the 100, ninth in the 200 and 11th in the long jump at sectional last season. EASTSIDE Keith Timmerman looks to build up the Eastside girls track and field program as he enters his first year coaching a small group of athletes. Losing regional-qualifying athletes Hannah Yoder and Emma Moughler is a tough hit to the 2018 Blazers, but the team returns Erika Brock. Brock qualified for the regional as a freshman by finishing third in the 100 dash at sectional in 13.56 seconds. She also was seventh in the 200, seventh as part of the Eastside 1,600 relay team and first as the first leg of the Blazers’ 400 relay team. Olivia Yoder also returns to the team for her senior season. She threw shot put for an eighth-place finish in sectional last season and qualified for the regional with a fifth-place finish in the discus at sectional. Timmerman said his group is small, but he has a positive feeling heading into the spring. PRAIRIE HEIGHTS Prairie Heights found most of its success last season in pole vault. Sydney Rathburn finished third in the sectional with a final jump of 9-2, while Kelsi Cook placed eighth. The two juniors combined for seven of the Panthers’
KPC FILE PHOTO
22 points in the sectional. Rathburn qualified for regional for the third time in her career, and both of the vaulters are returning for their senior seasons in 2018. The Panthers will see the bulk of their production come from a bigger sophomore class, which has seven athletes returning. Highlighting the sophomore class is Kyler Hall, who finished 11th in both the 100 dash and the 200 at sectional last season, 14th in the long jump and fourth with the Prairie Heights 400-meter relay 14th. Amanda Dyer is another sophomore that returns for the Panthers after finishing fourth in the sectionals in the 100 hurdles and fourth in the same 400 relay as Hall. CHURUBUSCO It’s hard to discuss Churubusco track and field and not discuss pole vaulter Rachel Jaquay. She vaulted head and shoulders above the competition in the sectional last season as a sophomore, winning by six inches. Then she won the Marion Regional by four inches and placed 15th at state. Jaquay returns for her junior year at ’Busco alongside fellow vaulter Maggie Burita, who qualified for the regionals in pole vault and with the Eagles’ 3,200 relay as a freshman. With several freshmen returning for their sophomore seasons with plenty of
experience, Churubusco looks to move up from eighth place as a team in a tough sectional field. Madison Gaff is also in that sophomore group. She placed seventh in shot put at sectional last year. FREMONT Fremont got a huge spark from its freshman class in 2017 as 83 percent of its points scored in the sectional were scored by ninth graders. Samantha Kuhn returns as one of two freshmen to score in the 800 at sectional last season, while Grace Schmucker returns to the track as the best freshman finisher in the 3,200. While losing two of its top scorers to graduation, Fremont will likely improve with a sophomore class that has a bright future. LAKELAND Losing top scorer Kloee Fitch to graduation is a tough loss for Lakeland. As one of the best throwers in the area, Fitch finished fifth in state in the discus and 21st in the shot put. The Lakers also lost Michaella Burnett to graduation. She earned points in the 1,600 and 3,200 at sectional. But the good news for the Lakers is that they have a plethora of young talent. Their top-placing sprinters were both freshmen last season. Samantha See GIRLS TRACK page 8

Rich mix of experience and youth scattered among area softball teams BY CHRIS REED creed@kpcmedia.com
The area softball team will feature a pleasant mix of seasoned veterans, young startups and teams that will be looking to cement their places among the region’s elite in 2018. Teams such as East Noble and West Noble will be looking to overcome the departures of key seniors, while squads like Fremont and Central Noble, featuring a plethora of young talent, will aim to continue on their upward trend. It’ll be a thrilling season. Here are capsules on each area team (with records from the 2017 season). CENTRAL NOBLE (16-11, 10-1 NECC) Last year, Central Noble used an infusion of young talent to become the area’s surprise contender en route to winning the program’s first-ever Northeast Corner Conference title. This year, the Cougars want to prove that wasn’t a fluke. Sophomore pitcher Maddie Bremer returns on the mound after posting a 2.07 earned run average, including a stellar 0.79 in league play while tallying 137 strikeouts. Senior Calista Rice and sophomores Sam Brumbaugh and Andrea Leonhardt also
return as the team’s leading sluggers. Brumbaugh led the team with a .518 batting percentage and 44 hits. Leonhardt slugged five homers. The Cougars bring a lot of batting power and speed to the diamond, two things that will help them in their quest for another crown. ANGOLA (12-11, 8-2 NECC) Saint Francis signee Regan Peppler returns for her senior season behind the plate for the Hornets, who finished second in the Northeast Corner Conference a year ago. Both conference losses came at the hands of eventual league champion Central Noble. The Hornets return all but two players from last year’s team — Sydney Boyd and Madi Moyer — and will be relying on that returning experience to put them over the top in 2018. Angola will field nine combined seniors and juniors this season, making it one of the area’s most experienced squads. WESTVIEW (16-9, 8-3 NECC) A third-place finish in the NECC highlighted a Warrior season in which it saw many of its talented young players grow up on the diamond. Junior Andrea Stoltzfus returns as the

starting pitcher after a sophomore campaign in which she tossed 88 strikeouts and posted a 2.53 ERA and an 8-1 record in 55 innings. Westview lost leading slugger Karis Brewer to college, but retains junior Tori Antal and senior Hayley Courtney, two
players who both averaged over .400 at the plate and combined for 51 hits and 29 runs batted in. The loss of Brewer will take some See SOFTBALL page 5

stepping up from younger hitters to overcome. But after reaching the sectional semifinals last year, the Warriors look ready to be even better in 2018. CHURUBUSCO (15-15, 4-6 NECC) Abby Erwin’s 38 hits and seven home runs last season put the junior squarely atop the Eagles’ pecking order at the plate in 2018, as ’Busco looks to improve upon its ninth-place finish in the NECC. The Eagles had their moments, with wins over teams such as Central Noble and Fremont en route to playing in the Class 2A Adams Central Sectional championship game. ’Busco graduated just three seniors from last year’s team, including its leading hitter and outfielder Mallory Pearson. With lots of experience returning, the Eagles look poised to make more regular season and postseason noise in 2018. DEKALB (8-18, 0-7 NE8) The Barons will go through a bit of a transition year in 2018, losing star player Hannah Ring and three other seniors — Amanda Shonka, Carlee Conrad and Megra Arterburn — from last year’s squad. DeKalb returns two pitchers who will need to gain more experience this year in junior Katie Knepper and sophomore Faith Ehmke, but both have shown promise at the varsity and junior varsity levels, respectively. In the outfield, juniors Krysten Butler and Maddie Comment will be relied on to direct the Barons’ defensive efforts. Coach Larry Sprague noted that it will take some time, but said by the end of the season his Barons will be a team that can compete with most area teams. EASTSIDE (13-10, 6-5 NECC) The Blazers finished right in the middle of the pack, sixth place, in the NECC in 2017. This year, led by the slugging of senior Shyan McKinley, the team from Butler hopes to inch its way into the upper echelon of its league. The team batted .280 as a whole, with McKinley averaging .348 at the plate a year ago. Jessica Hartman led the Blazers on the mound with a 1.75 ERA on the year. EAST NOBLE (15-11, 1-6 NE8) The Knights started the 2017 season hot, winning nine of their first 10 games before stumbling through a tough Northeast 8 Conference slate. This year, the EN faithful hope that new coach Jessica Hull and a few new faces will help propel the team a step further. One thing EN has going for it is stability on the mound. The duo of senior Taylor Peters (3.01 ERA, 81 strikeouts) and
sophomore Dani Jaquay (2.05 ERA, 33 K’s) return after each flashed signs of dominance a year ago. Junior Grace Erwin returns as one of the team’s leading batters, averaging .355 at the plate, along with senior Carissa Grusczcyk (.361). The Knights lost offensive stalwart Laina Combs to college and infielder Taylor Lahee to graduation, but return experienced talent that will help the team as it moves forward this spring. FREMONT (21-8, 7-4 NECC) After starting the year 2-6, Fremont finished its 2017 campaign 19-2 en route to becoming one of the area’s most surprising success stories. The Eagles lose two players from that squad, but return a marvelous mix of young and veteran talent. Baleigh Weidenhamer returns for her senior season as the team’s offensive leader (.380 batting average in 2017) and will play at third base and pitch. Fellow seniors Tory Foster and Gabrielle Saltzgaber also return to the lineup as well as junior Jaden Cardoso. The Eagles move down a class this year, from 2A to 1A, which adds a layer of excitement and mystery to the postseason slate. However, coach Ron Smith said the team’s loss to then-2A No. 5 Bremen in last year’s sectional will be a motivating factor that transcends classes. GARRETT (11-15, 5-6 NECC) The Railroaders finished seventh in the NECC during the final year of legendary coach Scott Bishop’s career. Garrett returns talented players such as Camden Bodey for another go-around this year in hopes to continue Bishop’s legacy of winning. The Railroaders had a bit of an up-anddown year last season, but did finish the regular season on a 6-1 streak. With new coach Jason Richards and plenty of buzz around the program, Garrett looks to keep that positive momentum moving forward into 2018. LAKELAND (7-18, 5-7 NECC) Sophomore Kylee Palmer leads a group with plenty of young talent into the new year, as Lakeland hopes that last year’s experience turns into this season’s success. Palmer recorded 28 hits and 12 runs batted in a year ago while averaging .384 at the plate. The youngster will need to be even better in her second year to make up for the loss of departed slugger Alexis Moore, who led the team in doubles and home runs. Junior pitcher Elise Edwards returns to the mound. Edwards pitched 24 innings in 2017, tallying 85 strikeouts and a 4.63 ERA. Fellow junior Gabrielle Norton will split time at pitcher. Norton threw 41 strikeouts in 65 relief innings a season ago.

this season, including seniors Liz German and Shelby Fish. Fish posted a .394 batting average and 28 hits to lead last year’s group while German checked in at .343 with 23 hits. German also posted a 4-10 record on the mound while leading the Panther pitchers with a 4.15 ERA and 83 strikeouts. Heights finished next to last in the NECC standings last season, ahead of only 0-10 Hamilton, but look poised to make a jump this year if its leaders play to their potential. WEST NOBLE (5-16, 2-6 NECC) Kaylie Warble did it all for the Chargers last year, but she has just finished her freshman season of basketball at Grace College. Four other players from last year’s squad also graduated, so West Noble appears to be in a transition year. The Chargers field just one senior this season, Olivia Reidenbach, but also have a slew of juniors, eight in all, who will be relied on to turn three years of experience into more success on the diamond. The 2017 season was a down year for the Chargers, but with nine total juniors and seniors posed to either break out or continue their successes, the team will be hoping to climb the ladder into the upper echelon of the NECC in 2018.

Area baseball looking competitive all over BY BRICE VANCE bvance@kpcmedia.com
Baseball in the northeast part of the state is always competitive and filled with plenty of talent. This year is no different. The area has some teams looking to defend conference and sectional titles. DeKalb won the Northeast 8 Conference outright, and Westview won the regular season Northeast Corner Conference title, while Eastside won the NECC tournament and a Class 2A sectional championship. Here’s a look at the area baseball teams for the 2018 season (with records from the 2017 season). DEKALB (19-8, 6-1 NE8) The DeKalb baseball team will look to build off its first conference championship since 2010 and be back in the hunt for another chance at a sectional title. The Barons look studded to do so with seven returning starters, including Alec Brunson, who belted five home runs and 25 runs batted in and is committed to play for Fort Wayne (IPFW) next season, as well as Troy Hickman, who finished with six home runs and 28 RBIs in 2017. Also returning on the mound is Jackson Pyck-Hontz, who was 5-3 with a 3.22 earned run average and 64 strikeouts in 50 innings. Andrew Novak, who was 5-2 on the hill with one save and a 2.29 ERA, also returns for DeKalb. Other players to return to the lineup are Colin Goebel, Ben Christiansen and Dane Mettert. Christiansen and Mettert both hit above .300 last season and Goebel has been the leadoff hitter for the Barons the last two seasons. ANGOLA (15-11, 9-2 NECC) The Angola baseball team graduated one senior (Jake Honer) off last year’s team, but returned a talented group of underclassmen to go along with its two seniors Tyler Sonner and Chance Roddy. Last season the Hornets batted .313 as a team and had a team ERA of 3.85. This season Angola returns 12 letterwinners off of last year’s team. Roddy is one of two returning pitchers for the Hornets. Roddy finished 2017 with a 4-4 record with a 1.47 ERA and 45 strikeouts in 38 innings. The other returning pitcher is Aaron Chao, who pitched 35 innings and finished with a 4-1 record, a 1.65 ERA and 63 strikeouts. Sonner is one of the top returning sluggers for Angola. He was third on the team in batting average, hitting .379. David Frank led the team with a .412 average, and Roddy was second at .410. Joel McCurdy batted .305, and Chao hit .262.
WESTVIEW (18-8, 10-1 NECC) The Warriors saw eight seniors leave the program last year, but are known for stockpiling young talent to replenish the roster every year. Matt Jones II, Nick Rensberger, Jansen Brandenberger and Hunter Sharick all return will varsity experience. Sharick tossed 30 innings in 2017 and finished with a 2.05 ERA and 19 strikeouts. Brandenberger leads the Warriors returning with a .315 batting average last season. He finished with four doubles, 12 RBIs and 17 runs scored. Jones hit .294, while Rensberger batted .279 last year for the Warriors. FREMONT (12-19, 4-7 NECC) A lot of signs point to 2018 being a bigger and better year for the Fremont baseball program. The Eagles have three returning seniors, including Rhett Evans, who batted .479 last season with 19 RBIs and 31 runs. Evan Trusty hit .292 with three home runs and 18 RBIs. Senior pitcher Joe Molter looks to build off a 2017 campaign, where his finished with 2.55 ERA. Evans is on pace to become the school’s all-time leader in hits, runs scored, doubles and stolen bases. Another top returner for Fremont this season is junior centerfielder Ethan Marten, who batted .326 in 2017. Head coach Justin Bock has 22 freshmen and sophomores in the program, and 62 percent of innings thrown were by underclassmen. Another advantage Fremont has going into 2018 is it gets to host a Class 1A sectional. In the previous two seasons, the Eagles had gotten to the championship game, but fell to Blackhawk Christian both times. PRAIRIE HEIGHTS (10-16, 3-8 NECC) The Prairie Heights lost only two players off its team, so the Panthers return in 2018 with experience and more firepower. Codey Shafer led the Panthers in 2017, hitting .412. Zach Smith and Blake Hoyer are expected to be the one-two punch for Heights on the hill. Smith finished last season with a 2.62 ERA, and Hoyer had a 2.84 ERA. Also returning for the Panthers are Lucas Gingerich, Logan Nott, Kolton Taylor, Layne Bachelor and Kody Gaul. Some of the newcomers for Prairie Heights are Isiah Levitz, Lance Lennen, Christian Crone, Kodi Engle, Louis Fraley and Ryan Rasler.
KPC FILE PHOTO
Prairie Heights first-year head coach Dane Forbes has been with the Panthers for 12 seasons, but this season will be his first as the varsity head coach. WEST NOBLE (11-15, 5-6 NECC) West Noble head coach Doug Brown sees a lot in his group for 2018. The Chargers graduated four seniors off last year’s squad, but Brown said this year’s team has the potential to finish near the top of the NECC. Jorge Villanueva is the leading pitcher and hitter who returns for West Noble. Villanueva batted .346 last year with 11 doubles, 16 runs and 28 RBIs. On the bump, he tossed 39 1/3 innings and struck out 44 batters. Other pitchers with varsity experience including Chase Stoner with 16 2/3 innings and Tad Airgood with 6 1/3 innings. Michael Flores is another returning hitter expected do some damage for the Chargers this season. He batted .319 last season with five doubles and 17 RBIs. GARRETT (7-15, 5-6 NECC) The Railroaders lost four seniors to graduation, but have four seniors to take their place as the leaders this season. Garrett went 7-19 in 2017 and finished 5-6 in NECC play. Carter Back and Cole Kelham are both three-year starters who are back for their senior seasons. Kelham hit .292 at the plate last year, while Back hit .235.
Senior Hayden Greene hit .305 for the Railroaders last year, and Cody DeLong batted .328. The top two hitters returning for Garrett are both juniors, Kobe Lucarelli, who had a .355 batting average, and Bryce Wilson, who hit .359. The key for head coach Brett Ratcliffe is getting his pitchers to throw strike consistently and allowing the defense to help back them up. EASTSIDE (23-5, 8-3 NECC) The Eastside baseball team lost 10 seniors to graduation off last year’s squad, which earned sectional champion. Returning for the Blazers include seniors Caleb Ballentine and Riley Thompson and juniors Joe White and Chase Franz. Ballentine is the pitcher coming back with the most experience. He saw action in eight innings with an 1.75 ERA. Ballentine also batted .295 with five doubles, 15 RBIs and 24 runs scored. White hit for a .286 average with 16 RBIs and 16 runs. Thompson had 10 RBIs and 14 runs and Franz had two triples, 16 RBIs and 19 runs. Lots of potential in boys track and field BY TAYLOR LEHMAN For KPC Media Group
Here’s a look at the area high school boys track and field teams as their 2018 season are underway. LAKELAND Lakeland is coming off a 2017 sectional championship but graduated a lot of that championship talent, including 100-meter dash champion Eli Wallace, 200 champion Daniel Overbey, 110 hurdles and 300 hurdles champion Tanner Raatz, 400 champion and pole vault runner-up Brennan Weimer, and high jump runner-up Ian Fey. The Lakers aren’t lacking talent returning though. Sophomore sprinter Camryn Holbrook backed up Wallace and Overbey in every sprinting event and was the first leg of the sectional-winning 400 relay. Junior middle distance runner Collin Alleshouse already has a top five sectional finish in the 800, while senior Kent Eagleson finished in seventh in the 1,600 and 13th in the 3,200 last season. Bailey Schlabach also ran well as second to Raatz during his sophomore season, finishing seventh in the 300 at the sectional, and Chase Edwards continued to improve behind Fey, ending his junior season tied for fourth place in high jump and a ninth-place finish in the long jump. Austin Collins was performing with Weimer in pole vault rather than as his No. 2, and he returns for his junior season in 2018. WESTVIEW Westview finished second in its sectional last season and will return as one of the favorites to win in the spring. Seniors Richmond Stoltzfus and Matthew Yoder finished first and second, respectively, in both the 1,600 and the 3,200 as juniors. They’ll likely be the favorites again, with Stoltzfus eyeing a regional championship as well. It will be difficult to count out the Warriors in any competition this spring. Junior sprinter Austin Nordman will be vying for a sectional championship in the 100, as he is the second fastest returning competitor in the event, and another long jump title. Anthony Schwartz will also be searching for a first-place finish in the 400. He was the only freshman to finish in the top 10 in the event last season. As a freshman, Dylan Nowicki finished directly behind his senior teammate Derek Miller in the 800. He will be the favorite in the event this spring.
EAST NOBLE East Noble graduated its lead sprinter Kyle Forker, a regional qualifier last season, and lead distance runner Noah Acker after last season. The Knights will look to Andrew McCormick in the 100 and Donley Durbin in the 200 to replace Forker and to Fernando Herrera, Jack Jansen, Bailey Parker and Austin Liepe to replace Acker. The Knights saw some breakthrough performances from freshmen last season too. Joe Painter won the sectional in pole vault and finished 13th in the Marion Regional. Painter also competed in hurdles. Gage Ernsberger headed East Noble’s jumps last season and ended ninth in the long jump and 12th in the high jump. Liepe competed with Jansen in the 3,200 at sectional, where he finished sixth in his first postseason. Griffen Dafforn-Koebler also returns as East Noble’s lead discus thrower, while Kam Williams returns as the Knights’ top shot putter. DEKALB DeKalb graduated most of its first-string talent after the 2017 season and begins a new era of younger athletes under new head coach Seth Wilcox. Wilcox said much of the responsibility falls on the few seniors the Barons have on the roster. The most weight will be shouldered by state competitor Isaac Brown, who finished third in high jump outdoors last season. Brown also competed strongly in long jump and hurdles last season and is expected to do so in 2018. Wilcox also named middle distance runner Seth Knepper and hurdler Cole Althouse as seniors who need to carry a lot of the load in 2018. Junior Austin Curran had a good showing last season behind Brown, and they could be one of the better duos in the area. As freshmen last season at sectional, Cale Beer was sixth in the 1,600 and Clayton Adams was eighth in the 3,200. ANGOLA Angola competed well across the board last season, finishing fifth in the Northeast Corner Conference meet and third in sectional. But while it returns the majority of its success from last season, it’ll have to overcome the loss of graduated sprinters to retain that success this spring. The most notable of graduated senior is Myles Turner, who finished well in the 100 and also competed in the 200 and long jump.

Sam Frederick also graduated after collecting points at the sectional in the 200 dash and 300 hurdles. While Angola returns strong competitors like sprinter Josh Taylor, mid-distance runner Jake Bradley, distance runner Josiah Mortorff, hurdler Caleb Baird, hurdler Bryan Sears, jumper Jarret Schultz, vaulter Kyler Bourne and thrower Aaron Petrancosta, it’ll need younger middle distance runners and sprinters to replace the four graduated athletes to maintain its place near the top of the area. EASTSIDE First-year head coach Kagan Gentry is going to have strong upperclassmen to rely on in his first campaign. And it
begins with No. 1 sprinter Montravion Staley, who finished eighth at regional in the 100 and ninth in the 200. He also anchored the 400 relay team. Eastside graduated Keezan Jarrard behind Staley, so the pressure to find success continues to fall on Staley’s shoulders. Other seniors include hurdler Remington Cline, sprinter and jumper Aaron Dean, mid-distance runner Logan Hegerfeld, jumper Jordan Esposito and thrower Andrew Steffen. Gentry said he’s going to need strong leadership out of his seniors to help move along the progression of the team and See BOYS TRACK page 12

Scigouski placed seventh in the 100 hurdles and fifth in the 300 hurdles as a freshman. She was the only ninth grader in the sectional to score points in the 300 hurdles. Lakeland also scored points with the only 400 relay that was solely comprised of freshmen. That youth is something to build on for the 2018 season.

the mound with a 2.78 ERA in 2017. He also batted .273 last season. Nolan Isaacs finished last year with a .329 average and will anchor the infield for Lakeland. Kole Miller will move to the role of the starting catcher after he started in four different positions last year. He led the Lakers in hits and batted .320. Dylan Dunn batted .342 to lead Lakeland in 2017 and returns for 2018. Others returning starters include Kyle Bowers, Miles Mast and Hunter Frost. Newcomers for Lakeland will be Tristan Witham, A.J. Poe, Coby Mitchell, Austin Albert, Kole Lounsbury and Jayce Reigling. EAST NOBLE (15-12, 5-2 NE8) The Knights have eight seniors coming back to this year’s squad. Chevy Wright batted .358 for East Noble in 2017 with 14 RBIs and 21 runs. Joe Kovets returns to the pitching staff after going 2-2 with 24 1/3 innings, 18 strikeouts and an ERA of 3.16 last season. At the plate, Kovets hit .308 with 11 RBIs and 19 runs. Dylan Schermerhorn tossed 10 1/3 innings last year and Lucas Platt threw 9 2/3. Colton Wright and Kovets each had seven stolen bases in 2017. Other seniors returning to the squad include Zach Taylor, Garrett Maag and Nick McCoy. LAKEWOOD PARK (6-14) The Panthers return plenty of experience off of last year’s squad. Harrison Roberts led Lakewood in 2017 with a .440 batting average with one home run, five doubles, 18 steals and 18 runs. He
was the lone Panther to have more than 20 hits last season. Roberts pitched 24 1/3 innings with 26 strikeouts. Jesse Macias-Gallardo tossed 18 2/3 innings with 14 strikeouts, and Andrew Lyons appeared in 17 1/3 innings with 15 strikeouts. Lyons also hit for a .312 average last year. Carsten White batted .302 for the Panthers in 2017, and Elijah Gardner hit .278. HAMILTON (6-17, 1-10 NECC) The Marines played quite a few underclassmen in 2017, and will return three key pieces to this year’s team. Dustin Cool led Hamilton with a .351 batting average. He finished with one triple, six doubles and nine RBIs. On the mound, Cool tossed 27 2/3 innings and struck out 34 batters. Nick Johnson hit an even .300 last year with 10 RBIs and 10 runs scored. He also pitched 10 innings for the Marines last year. Griffin Kohli hit .261 for Hamilton in 2017 and returns for this season. CENTRAL NOBLE (8-12, 5-6 NECC) The Cougars battled their way to a Class 2A sectional final last season. Head coach Jim Sickafoose is at the helm of the Central Noble program for his 10th season. Returning for the Cougars are Logan Pease, Braxton Dial, Connor Mooney, Tanner Schoeff, Kole Forker, Jordan Winebrenner, Jeff Myers, Chase Weber, Andrew Gingerich and Nico Urso. Pease and Gingerich were All-NECC selections last season. CHURUBUSCO (11-14, 5-6 NECC) Churubusco had two All-NECC selections last season. Brandon Jencks graduated but senior Dean Stanley comes back for the Eagles this season.
WESTVIEW Westview returns 100 percent of its sectional scorers from 2017. Perhaps the biggest standout of those returners is sophomore sprinter Aleka Ernsberger. She burst onto the scene as a freshman last season by winning the 200 and 400 at sectional and eventually qualified for state in the 400, where she would eventually finish 11th, cementing her status as one of the best sprinters in Indiana’s Class of 2020. While Westview has several juniors and sophomores with early sectional experience, it also has a few seniors to guide the youth on the team. Jenna Duff scored in the high jump as a junior, and Summer Konkle and Maggie McCoy helped lead both the 400 and 1,600 relay teams in the sectional. WEST NOBLE West Noble had talent across the board last season, and the Chargers return most of that production in a strong junior class. As sophomores, Lauren Burns and Madison Schermerhorn established themselves as one of the best sprinting duos in the area by finishing fourth and 12th in the 100 dash, respectively, and sixth and fifth in the 200, respectively. The two sprinters also helped lead the West Noble 400 relay to a third-place finish and the 1,600 relay to a fifth-place finish. Schermerhorn also returns as the Chargers’ leading long jumper.
CENTRAL NOBLE Central Noble returns a strong senior class that will carry the majority of the scoring load this spring. Kayla Kunkel highlights that class. Kunkel won the 100 dash, finished third in the 200, and second in both the 400 and long jump at sectional in 2017. She then finished 17th in the 200 at state. Senior Montanna Keirn will also compete strongly next to Kunkel as a sprinter. Seniors Delaney Andrews and Paige Skinner also head Central Noble’s mid-distance squad and all three relays. Outside of the senior class, junior Meleah Leatherman finished third at sectional in high jump last year while sophomore Katelyn Ayres was fourth in the shot put and second in the discus as a freshman. GARRETT Garrett lost a lot of talent from the 2017 season in graduates Tori Baver, Drue Bodey and Grace Cooper. They were responsible for the success in the 1,600 and 3,200 relays, as well as the high jump, long jump and pole vault. But Railroader talent returning with postseason experience include sprinters Jada Moore, Camryn Kirkpatrick and Alissa Schott; distance runner Sydney Weaver; and hurdler Libbey Detcher. HAMILTON Losing Kirstin Comment to graduation was a tough hit for the Marines to take. Comment scored four of Hamilton’s six points in the sectionals with a fifth-place finish in the 400. She also finished ninth in the long jump. Kaitlyn Stoy, who led Hamilton in sprints in 2017, looks to match Comment’s scoring efforts from last year. Stoy finished just outside the final eight in both the 100 and the 200 dashes. The Marines also return their best throwers in Maggie Ingledue and Tori Creager. Veteran coach Brian Miller hopes to build on the standard Comment set in 2017 and find improvements as the season goes on.

Hornets, strong individuals lead area boys golf BY KEN FILLMORE kfillmore@kpcmedia.com
The area boys golf scene will feature a lot of strong individuals while also seeing plenty of significant change. Here’s a look at all the area teams. ANGOLA It will be the last go-around for a special senior group at Angola, which includes Ian Smith, Jimmy Thatcher and Noah Schoenherr. Those three will be in their fourth varsity seasons on the links. Coach Brian Miller’s Hornets will try to take the next step, qualify for the Indiana High School Athletic Association State Finals. That has been very difficult for any area teams or individuals over the past several years, and getting most of the team to shoot in the 70s will be key. Angola will have quality depth to attempt to do that. Angola was third in the East Noble Sectional to advance to regional and won the rain-shortened Northeast Corner Conference Tournament at Noble Hawk last year after finishing 10-1 in regular season conference play. It also won the Lakeland Invitational and its own Angola Sectional. The Hornets defeated a strong Indianapolis Cathedral squad to win their own tournament at Glendarin Hills. Angola was 13th in the Warsaw Regional at Stonehenge. Fairfield could be in the hunt for the NECC title with the Hornets in 2018. The Falcons have a solid senior in Michael Shetler, but lost most of last year’s lineup to graduation. DEKALB Jon Schenk takes over for longtime coach Jim Finchum, and the new coach has some talent to work with to keep the Barons in their perennially competitive situation. “As a first year coach, I’d like to thank Jim Finchum for his many years of dedication to the golf program,” Schenk said. “I believe we have a good chance to be very competitive this year due to the fact that all varsity players are returning from last year.” DeKalb will be led by juniors Gabe Schenk and Bailey Clark. Schenk averaged 78.8 for 18 holes and 41 in nine-hole matches and made the All-Northeast 8 Conference Second Team last season. He is a two-time KPC Media Group All-Area selection. Clark averaged 83.6 for 18 holes and 41.8 in nine-hole matches last year. He shot 77 to place 10th in the East Noble Sectional.
“We have some younger kids that are going to push them to maintain their spots,” Coach Schenk said. “The team has the potential to compete for the NE8 championship and make strong showings in the year end tournaments.” The Barons were seventh in the rain-shortened NE8 Tournament, but rose up to finish fifth in the East Noble Sectional with 329. EAST NOBLE The Knights had an uplifting 2017 season where they finished fourth in their own sectional and were three shots from the third and final regional-qualifying spot. They also tied for third in the NE8 Tournament, but actually placed fifth with the fifth-man score as the tiebreaker. It will be tough for the Knights to match that as second-year coach Patrick Luttman has to replace three starters, including graduates Elijah Stanton, a 2017 regional qualifier, and Ryan Desper. Junior Brock Kerst and senior Damian Bowker are East Noble’s leading returners. Kerst was an All-NE8 honorable mention last spring. LAKELAND Jon Roush is the dean of area boys golf coaches, beginning his 19th season at the helm. He will have one more season with a recognizable name in golf in LaGrange County as senior Presten Mortola will lead the Lakers. Tom Mortola, Presten’s father, is the owner and Director of Golf at Cedar Lake Golf Course in Howe. Spencer Mortola, Presten’s brother, starred for the Lakers on the links a few years back. Presten Mortola made the KPC Media Group All-Area team for the second straight season in 2017 after shooting 89 in the Northridge Sectional at Meadow Valley and missing a regional berth by three shots, being the NECC Tournament runner-up with a 37 at Noble Hawk, and averaging 88 for 18 holes and 44.1 in nine-hole events. Starters Jeff Patrick and Elijah Williams also return for their senior seasons at Lakeland. The Lakers have some holes to fill with Tanner Eggers and Christian Roose graduated. WESTVIEW The Warriors are on the rise and Carter Giggy has led the way. They finished third in the NECC Tournament and sixth in the Northridge Sectional last season. Giggy, a junior, is one of the

NECC’s top players. The Warriors achieved better quality scoring balance last season. Continued consistency could make them one of the better teams in the area this spring. CHURUBUSCO The Eagles will be rebuilding after graduating their top three players, including KPC Media Group Prep of the Year Trey Mayer. Junior Wyatt Gillenwater and sophomore Wyatt Johnson will lead Churubusco this season. GARRETT Dave Demske is the new coach and he will have a strong No. 1 in
sophomore Levi Follett. Follett was a regional qualifier last year as a freshman, advancing out of the EN Sectional with a 75 at Noble Hawk. He shot 93 in the Warsaw Regional at Stonehenge. He tied for third in the NECC Tournament at Noble Hawk with a 38. Senior Dillon McCann will also help the Railroaders try to achieve a higher standing within the NECC. Plenty of upside in area girls tennis BY KEN FILLMORE kfillmore@kpcmedia.com
Girls tennis is growing in the northeast corner of Indiana. It’s more than the traditional household names leading the way. Central Noble had a season for the ages in 2017, going 16-2, reaching a regional final and winning the Northeast Corner Conference Tournament. However, it was a re-emerging Westview team that won the NECC regular season title. Here’s a look at the area girls tennis scene in 2018. CENTRAL NOBLE The Cougars graduated seven seniors from last year’s squad, but they are not going away. Erika Maneke, Maggie Kaiser and Ellie Cole are back for their senior seasons. Maneke was 15-3 at No. 1 singles last season while Kaiser was 13-5 at No. 2 singles. Cole was 16-2 with Anna Jank at No. 1 doubles last season and could step into a singles role or remain in doubles if she is more comfortable there. WESTVIEW The Warriors have made considerable growth during Sheila King’s tenure as coach. The team hopes to keep growing in King’s fourth season at the helm with competitive balance throughout the lineup. Seniors Reghan Heffner and Serenity Corlett and junior Madison Kresse return to lead Westview. Heffner was the NECC runner-up at No. 3 singles last year while Corlett and Kresse were third in the conference tournament at No. 1 doubles. Lauryn Riegsecker is back after holding her own at No. 1 singles as a sophomore last year. Senior Chloe Lovell is also a returning starter. KPC FILE PHOTO
ANGOLA The Hornets have been a solid mainstay
EAST NOBLE The Knights have a lot of work to do after graduating eight girls from a team that finished 12-6 and reached a sectional final. Seniors Hannah Denton, Sam Ley and Rachel Ort will lead East Noble and second-year coach Damian Disque. Ort was 15-6 at No. 1 doubles with Jordan Axel and they were both selected to the All-Northeast 8 Conference First Team.
Newcomers expected to contribute are juniors Erin Bloom and Jordan Stayer and freshman Kayla Desper. DEKALB Coach Payton Yarian will focus on continued improvement with her Barons this season and will have much of her varsity rotation back from last year. DeKalb will also play for its late teammate Lilliana Morrow, a sophomore who died on Feb. 4 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Returning to the courts for the Barons are senior Jill Kuhn and juniors Bethany Lancaster, Hannah McAfee, Marie Burton, Shaina Ehmke and Jordan Stayer. Lancaster played at No. 1 singles last season while Kuhn and McAfee joined forces at No. 1 doubles. FREMONT Fremont took steps in the right direction last year, but will be much younger after four starters graduated. The Eagles will have twin sisters Kirsten and Taylor Lovett back for their senior seasons after they set a new standard for the program in doubles play See TENNIS page 12

and that does not appear to change with six varsity players returning from a team that won its sixth straight sectional title. Only No. 2 singles player Anna Fuller graduated. “Number one singles Jadyn Davis (15-9 in 2017) has put in 10 months of offseason work to improve her level of play,” Angola coach Scott Hottell said. “Watch for her to have a stellar season against the area’s best competitors. “Several of last year’s (junior varsity) players have worked in the offseason to challenge the current varsity girls.” Senior Abby Hottell, Scott’s daughter, will also be in the mix. She is healthier after having shoulder surgery in December 2016.

last season. They are the program’s first duo to qualify for the doubles sectional as they went 14-7 to set a new school record for wins from a No. 1 girls doubles team. They already have 20 career wins together, which is also a Fremont girls record. Adrianna McDowell is also back for her senior campaign after learning a lot at No. 1 singles last season.
most of his varsity squad back from last season. That includes junior Jon Buchanan and seniors Thayne Camp and Cole Thomas.
underclassmen, such as sophomore distance runner Gezahagne Biddle, who finished 10th in the 1,600 and 11th in the 3,200.
EASTSIDE, CENTRAL NOBLE, WEST NOBLE, HAMILTON AND PRAIRIE HEIGHTS These teams will look to grow as the season goes on with highly inexperienced teams. The Chargers will be made up largely of sophomores. Junior Nick Alwine, a transfer from East Noble, could immediately impact the Cougars. The Blazers graduated their top golfer from last year in Kameron Hoff. Senior Cable Leeper is among the leading players returning before he plays football at NCAA Division III Adrian (Michigan) College. The Panthers ended last season with only one boy competing. Coye Blodgett ended his junior season with a 94 at the Northridge Sectional at Meadow Valley, and played some golf on the Indiana Junior Golf Mountain Dew Tour over the summer. Coach Charlie Pettibone will try to build a roster around Blodgett.
PRAIRIE HEIGHTS Prairie Heights has good young talent coming into the program this spring, but it graduated 71 percent of its sectional scorers, mainly in hurdler and jumper Austin Shepard. Shepard finished his senior season strong in the 110 hurdles, 300 hurdles and long jump, eventually finishing eighth in the 300 hurdles in the regional. In the sectional, Shepard scored 18 points. The Panthers have promising youth in sophomore sprinter Clay Schenkel, junior mid-distance runner Allan Steele, sophomore mid-distance runner Mike Perkins, sophomore pole vaulter Skyler Cummings and junior thrower Hans Franke.
WEST NOBLE The Chargers had a young core last season and much of the team still has two seasons of tennis left entering this season. Juniors Tara Miller and Riley Kruger qualified for the doubles sectional last season. They were second in the NECC Tournament last season at No. 1 doubles. All three singles players from 2017 are also juniors in Megan Godfrey, Tori Miller and Kaity VanVorst. Senior Madison Hilbish is also back for West Noble after playing doubles last spring. LAKELAND, CHURUBUSCO AND PRAIRIE HEIGHTS These teams will look to grow in competitiveness this spring. The Lakers return sisters Beka and Beth Stroop.

CHURUBUSCO Churubusco found success last season, finishing fourth in a tough sectional, but it also saw a lot of scorers graduate. Athletes like sprinters Zach Bultemeier and Jarred Ostler, mid-distance runners Cole Lybarger and Jacob Eyer, distance runner Trey Springer, hurdler Nicholas Murphy, jumpers Carlin Amber and Isaac Ramey, and thrower Landen Pulley all graduated and left big shoes to fill for upcoming athletes like sophomore sprinter and jumper Gage Kelly, senior thrower Garrett Horn, senior hurdler Mason Anderson and sophomore pole vaulter Sam Wood. FREMONT Besides hurdler Jordyn Wilson, Fremont graduated a few athletes since the 2017 season. Wilson scored at sectional in the 110 hurdles with a seventh-place finish, and crossed the line 10th in the 300 hurdles. Sprinter Kacey Gannon returns for his senior season after strong performances in the 200, 400 and long jump. Middle distance runner Hayden McLatcher takes the track again for his junior season in 2018, representing Fremont’s strongest performer in the 800 and 1,600. Distance runner Spencer Castillo runs the 3,200 and comes back for his junior season. WEST NOBLE Last season was a year of growth for West Noble. With a large sophomore class, the Chargers graduated very little production from 2017.

Dakota Thompson and Jordan Shoemaker competed as a duo against Westview’s strong 1,600 at sectional and finished fourth and fifth, respectively. They’ll be competing for the sectional championship. The Chargers also bring back a big portion of their three relay squads. At sectional, they finished second in the 3,200 relay, fifth in the 1,600 relay and seventh in the 400-meter relay. They also return sprinters Jovany Puente and Cade Barhydt, so West Noble looks to be on the rise. CENTRAL NOBLE Central Noble fielded a strong sprinting group in 2017, and it appears to be nearly as strong this season. At sectional last year, Jesse Jacobs was one of three sophomore sprinters to score in the 100 and one of two 10th graders to score in both the 100 and 200. The Cougars finished third in the 400 relay and second in the 1,600 relay. Connor Lundquist, who finished second in the 400 and contributed to the 1,600 relay, graduated after being the lone Cougar in the 400. While Tadd Owen can seamlessly replace graduated teammate Seth Black at the hurdling events, Central Noble will have to find a replacement for Lundquist to maintain the success of last season’s sprinting squad. GARRETT Garrett’s strength in 2017 was its sprints, but many of those athletes have graduated. That not only leaves holes for Garrett to fill at the 100 and 400, but also in the regional-qualifying 400 and 1,600 relays. With sectional champion shot putter Beck Davis returning for a better shot at the regional, that should help Garrett with the loss of senior discus throwers Cordell Camp and Garrett Sutton. HAMILTON Hamilton saw some struggles last season with a smaller team, but hurdler and jumper Jerico Harden competed well in sectional, finishing third in high jump and 14th in the 300 hurdles. Now Harden, the lone scorer for Hamilton, has graduated, creating opportunity for younger Hamilton athletes to take the reins. Sophomore Michael Geiger found success in the 800 and the 1,600 last season as a freshman and looks to be the potential centerpiece for Hamilton’s scoring. Bailey Merritt also performed well in the long jump with a jump of 18 feet, 6 inches. Hamilton looks to continue to grow and compete in a tough sectional in 2018.
