Winter events to keep you and your children from becoming stir-crazy By Whitney Wright
Calendar of winter activities
Keeping children entertained during the winter months can be a tough task, especially when the temperatures make staying outside for too long unbearable or unsafe. Fortunately, multiple locations around Fort Wayne are providing events and programs specifically geared toward children that educate, entertain and are easy on parents’ wallets. The Fort Wayne Museum of Art will be the local affiliate of the Alliance for Young Artists and Writers’ Scholastic Art and Writing Awards. This art and writing competition is geared toward middle and high school students and the winners’ pieces will be on display for viewing for multiple months. Kids of all ages can see other kids’ art, said Amanda Martin, vice president and COO of FWMoA. Children can also enjoy the new antique toy exhibit
For a complete list of activities that are child-friendly, please see Page A13 . outside of the Children’s Early Learning Center. The Fort Wayne Museum of Art is free every Thursday from 5-8 p.m. Science Central and the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo are both hosting events this winter geared toward learning. Science Central has a special interactive visiting exhibit that teaches children about weather and how it works. The Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo will host two different dates for FrogWatch USA, a science program dedicated to teaching about local wetlands and amphibians. Participants will also learn about native frog and toad calls and about conservation efforts. The Allen County Public Library’s main location has many programs throughout February and March
for children of all ages, including weekly story times for babies, toddlers, preschoolers and families. Children have the opportunity to do art, explore physics and animals, plant a spring bulb, attend a puppet show, play with the library’s large Lego collection, solve math problems, watch the Fort Wayne Youth Ballet and much more. Children can also read to a service dog, an activity proven to make children more relaxed than reading to a human while they practice reading, said Teresa Walls, assistant manager of children’s services at the main library. Outdoor activities include ice skating at both Headwaters Park and the Huntertown Family Park, both of which are suitable for people of all ages.

The Rotary Club of Fort Wayne continues to live by its motto “Service Above Self” with its recent sponsorship of the water jet fountains, part of the city’s riverfront development project. The $26 million project is intended to create an innovative and exciting location for Fort Wayne residents and visitors to commune and enjoy the city and rivers. The fountain is an idea organized by the riverfront development project’s design team. It is part of the project’s phase 1A, projected to be complete before the end of 2018. The fountain is designed
as a complement to the adjacent natural water and for people to interact with the rivers, said Al Moll, director of parks and recreation for the city of Fort Wayne. During the warmer months, the fountain will be available for children to play in. “We are grateful that the Rotary Club of Fort Wayne took the initiative and were willing to be part of the overall project,” said Moll. “This is a model for other organizations to follow as we all invest in our future.” The water jet fountain, which will be located on the south plaza east of the Compass Pavilion, will be operated and maintained by the city’s park department after its completion. The fountain will cost
about $200,000 and construction will begin in August. The majority of the club members agreed that becoming involved in the riverfront development project was a way the club could continue its support of the city, something it has continued to do over decades. The club sponsored the Centennial Clock Tower in 2015 as a part of the club’s centennial celebration while also supporting more than 100 Little Free Libraries. Prior to 2015, the Club also coordinated the first public swimming pool in Lawton Park, developed the Circle of Hope trail in See FOUNTAIN, Page A12
