State board erases school’s ‘F’ By Garth Snow gsnow@kpcmedia.com

When Doug Hicks talks about East Allen University, he speaks of staff and parents but mostly about students. The principal of the Wayne Trace school measures success in the students’ success, and isn’t slow to mention the 100 percent graduation rate for the Class of 2016. The State Board of Education heard that appeal Feb. 1, and sided with Hicks and the state board’s

The Blackhawk Church Knots for Tots sewing club didn’t know the members of the Pieceful Quilters club. But when the Fort Wayne group read a Community Calendar item about the Community Sew-In, they signed up for a Saturday in Monroeville. “We like to sew and help nonprofit organizations like this, and so there are five of us who are going to see what it’s all about,” said Mary Sprunger. “We’ll take our sewing machines and our ironing boards and we’ll go see how we can help out.” Kathy Beauchot and friends will welcome the Blackhawk knotters and any other volunteers Saturday, Feb. 18,

A Maryland developer is purchasing the General Electric campus on Broadway Street in Fort Wayne — all 31 acres — and hopes to begin construction on a more than $284 million revamp at the site as early as this fall. “I think this is the greatest thing that could happen to Fort Wayne,” said Darrell Kindschy, who has lived within walking distance to the campus since 1974. “It will help the neighborhood. … Everyone is talking about it.” The announcement of the purchase and plans Monday was indeed what everyone seemed to be talking about that day. “This is a big win for the Broadway neighborhood and the south side of Fort Wayne,” said
