Emma delivers grand champion cake to Indiana State Fair for judging By Nicole Minier nminier@kpcmediacom

COLUMBIA CITY — Many were awed by the towering cake on display at the Whitley County 4-H Fair this year. The fair-themed cake featured carnival games and fair food, stood several feet tall, and was intricately detailed. Unsurprisingly, the cake won grand champion and is competing at the Indiana State Fair this week. Emma Coy started working on her project in April and spent at least 100 hours on the cake. “I wanted to do something like the state fair,” Coy said. “I went to Cedar Point and the Old Settlers Festival to get ideas.” The bottom layer of the cake is carnival games, the second row features food vendors and the third row depicts carnival rides, such as a Ferris wheel. Coy had to keep her cake in a special “cake room” of her house all spring and summer. The “cake

room” is kept at an extra cool temperature to prevent humidity or heat from ruining the cake. Coy has enjoyed being mentored by her older sisters, Molly and Hannah. The Coy sisters are tops in Whitley County 4-H cake decorating, having a champion cake every year since 2002 — 15 years. They learned from their aunt, Cheri Grable, and continued to expand their skills over the years. Though her older sisters have aged out of the 4-H program, Emma, an eight-year member, appreciates the advice and guidance from her sisters. Fairgoers have enjoyed the Coy cakes, which have had various themes, such as a campsite, farms, Cinderella and traditional wedding cakes. “It’s a tradition for us,” said their mother, Jennifer Coy. “I think people appreciate the cakes See CAKES, Page 3

CHURUBUSCO – Kent Lundy has taken over as the new pastor at the Churubusco United Methodist Church, but he is wearing two hats. While serving as the pastor in ’Busco, Lundy also serves his country as the chaplain for the 122nd Fighter Wing in Fort Wayne. “I am a uniform wearing major in the U.S. Air Force serving as a traditional guardsman,” he said. As a traditional guardsman, Lundy goes to the Air Force base in Fort Wayne one weekend a month and two weeks in the summer. Lundy joined the Air

Force in 2006, but his decision was not without struggle. “God and I wrestled a lot on that,” he said. “I was 38 when I raised my right hand for the military chaplaincy. I was married at the time, had two young sons and it was a struggle. But a good struggle. I’m grateful for that calling as well.” Before his most recent deployment, he was an associate pastor at the Columbia City United Methodist Church for five years. “When I left [on a deployment] last July, the bishop said, ‘The deployment is your appointment. When you come back from your deployment, after your leave is

up, you’ll have a new church.’” Upon returning, the bishop of Indiana for the United Methodist Church reassigned Lundy to the Churubusco UMC. “In the United Methodist system, we are appointed by the bishop,” he explained. “We serve at the will of the bishop, and we understand that God directs the bishop to place pastors at local United Methodist Churches. So this is a divine appointment that has been assigned by the bishop of Indiana.” Lundy feels like the Churubusco United Methodist Church is a great fit, and a unique fit for his See LUNDY, Page 2
