Kids set for success in Whitley County

County exceeds in education, childcare and low poverty rates By Tyler Roebuck troebuck@kpcmediacom

COLUMBIA CITY – Whitley County’s children are exceeding in education, childcare and there are low percentages of children living in poverty, relative to other counties in the state, according to the Indiana Youth Institute.

The findings are accompanied by an historically low unemployment rate. Combined, this means fewer Whitley County children are living in poverty than the state average. The Indiana Youth Institute presented this information during a May 30 discussion about its

annual report on the state of children in Indiana, and specifically within Whitley County. Central Indiana Outreach Manager Kevin Enders led the session, which was broken down into several segments: population, education, poverty, child care, mental health, violent

relationships and child maltreatment. In Whitley County, the population of children has been following the statewide trend of decreasing. Children under 18 years of age qualify in their survey, and the percentage of children per household in Whitley County has declined 5.8 percent since

COLUMBIA CITY — “Even bad publicity is publicity.” Ty Murphy, the man who spearheaded downtown Columbia City’s newest memorial, a tribute to Vietnam War veterans, took last week in stride after a photo of the memorial went viral on social media. The memorial, which lies on a pentagon-shaped cement pad, features two 2,000-pound stones that list the names of Whitley County natives who died while serving in the Vietnam War. Alongside the large stone are two benches — one with an unfortunate misspelling. One of the benches was supposed to read, “War on Terrorism,” but rather read, “War on Terriorism.” A photo of the bench was taken on social media and spread across northeast Indiana, drawing attention from radio and television stations. “I was so worried about making sure the names on the memorial were spelled correctly, I checked those several times, that I just glanced at the benches,” Murphy said. The company out of Marion will replace or fix the misspelling on the $500 bench at See VIETNAM, Page 10

Prior to his capture, Roff allegedly fled from the Marathon gas station near Armstrong Drive and U.S. 30. He ran west on Connexion Way, turning north on Lincolnway.

Police say Roff drove his car into a cornfield and fled on foot. Officers chased him, but were unable to capture him before he entered a wooded area. “At that point, parameters were established and the lock down was determined as a precautionary measure,” Daniel said. “The rationale for the lockdown was because the suspect was a known drug user with identified paraphernalia in the car, and there was enough evidence to suspect he was carrying a firearm.
