Whitley County wants you Mayor Daniel, EDC use unique ways to target new residents By Nicole Minier nminier@kpcmediacom
COLUMBIA CITY — Columbia City Mayor Ryan Daniel and the Whitley County Economic Development Corp. are taking an innovative approach to attracting new residents. With an unemployment rate at one of the lowest in the state at 2.3 percent, employers are struggling to find skilled employees. That’s where Daniel and the EDC’s Katie Dewitt
have stepped in, running a campaign to show off what Columbia City and Whitley County have to offer. Daniel and the EDC have run several talent attraction advertisements via Facebook and Instagram, reaching out to communities in other states — communities with higher unemployment rates. Using the social media sites’ targeting options, Daniel has had several
campaigns. The first campaign focused on parts of Kentucky, Illinois and Pennsylvania. The current campaign is in Kentucky. “Facebook allows you to target specific individuals, such as those with specific job experience or family characteristics,” Daniel said. The talent attraction campaigns have sought out those with experience in advanced manufacturing, tool and die and other career fields that are
in need of employees in Whitley County. “Our goal was to target individuals who had the same skill sets that we need, who are unemployed, looking for a new home, a new place to excel and grow,” Daniel said. “Out of that, we’re having some good success.” Advertising assets
Through Facebook and Google analyzing tools, the city can view data of
people who are viewing the advertisement, and people who are engaged in the website. “We know when people see a Facebook ad, they’re not going to pack up their bags and move up here right that moment,” Dewitt said. “But using the data, we can gauge if people would even consider moving here.” The EDC’s first advertisement garnered See ATTRACT, Page 4

COLUMBIA CITY — Sparks flew on Tuesday when County Highway Engineer Brandon Forrester laid out three five-year plans to the County Council, which included the immediate hiring of a new employee. The plans - roads, equipment and capital expenses, as well as new employees - consider 100 miles of chip and seal work on roads and new maintenance machinery. At Monday’s commis-
sioner’s meeting, the commissioners favorably passed Forrester’s plan to use the increase in funding the department expects to receive from a statewide increase in the gas tax, effective July 1. The projected bump in funds for Whitley County is expected to be about $1.2 million more in 2018 than what was received in 2016. ‘It’s not about you’ at Whitko graduation By Tyler Roebuck troebuck@kpcmediacom
SOUTH WHITLEY — Whitko High School’s graduating students of 2017 received their diplomas on Friday, June 2. Principal John Snyder delivered his graduation speech to the fully packed gymnasium, beginning with a quote attributed to famous author Mark Twain that reads: “The two most important days of your life are the day you were born and the day you find out why.”
He went on to tell the graduates that this day was not about them. “Instead, it’s about being there when others are vulnerable,” Snyder explained. “It’s about using your skills to make others’ lives easier. It’s about equipping others with the skills to make people better. It’s about treating people fairly and honestly. It’s about sharing your gifts to make the world better. It’s about being willing to sacrifice to others. It’s about giving the next
generation hope and kindness.” With each of these pronouncements, he gave an example of someone from the student body and how their futures applied.
“It’s not about fame, it’s about the lives you impact every single day,” Snyder said at the conclusion of his speech. “Seek truth, not trend.” The graduation ceremony ended with students
lighting candles and holding them high in the air to demonstrate how alone their lights may seem insignificant, but when you raise yourself and others up you can light up the world.
