“Seussical, Jr.” in Hicksville, Ohio, will have a certain Indiana voice. Triniti McFarland of Carroll Middle school will play Mayzie in the confluence of Dr. Seuss stories. She will sing opposite Josh Fine of Hicksville as Horton. She will converse with Katherine Berger of Fairview (Ohio) High School as Cat in the Hat. Allen County, in fact, is well represented in the cast of 65 young people from five counties and two states. Fort Wayne, Harlan, New Haven and Woodburn also have youth in the second such summer production at the restored Huber Opera House & Civic Center. “It’s a nonprofit, totally run by volunteers, so there are no paid people at all at the Huber,” volunteer Chris Feichter said after a recent rehearsal. Sound crews or other tech help might be employed at a production, but that’s the size of the payroll. “The

Richard Ash can’t transform a ukulele novice into an independent artist instantly. But give him 2.5 hours and he will have the student playing the basics. “We learn a handful of chords, and strum those chords and hum along and we do a number of songs from ‘Clementine’ to ‘The Lion Sleeps Tonight,’ and two hours into the class they’re changing chords pretty easily,” Ash said. The owner of Woodcraft Instruments usually teaches audiences from the Midwest and beyond at his Woodburn shop. Or he follows the folk music circuit across the South and beyond. But from 9:30 a.m.-noon Saturday, Aug. 5, he will share more than a quarter-century of ukulele know-how at the Fort Wayne Community Center, 233 W. Main St. Sign up at fortwayneparks.

The beginners’ model won’t have the same luster as those that fill the walls in Woodburn, but the instruments will suffice for the introduction and the short-term. “It’s a one-time thing for most of the people,” Ash said. “They’re doing this for entertainment and they can work on this from home.” Ash has taught a ukulele class through the Fort Wayne Parks Department for about five years. “I’ve also done harmonica and tinwhistle. I’ve done a variety of programs with the Parks Department, and it’s very well organized,” he said. Some of Ash’s students have gone on to join See INTRO, Page A6

Harlan Days HARLAN DAYS will celebrate the Aug. 3-5, Harlan familiar standards Community Park, of a small-town north of State summer Aug. 3-5. Road 37 (Maysville Expect a kids’ parade, a big parade, Road), Harlan. For the full schedule, and a pancake visit harlandays. breakfast. com. Look for balloon rides, too, and helicopter rides, a cruise-in car and bike show, the Harlan Hustle 5-K Fun Run, nightly entertainment and food. The community and its guests also will celebrate and support the recreation program that keeps more than 130 kids on the ball diamonds spring and early summer. The festival also will help fund the soccer, basketball, tennis and street hockey facilities at the host Harlan Community Park. The numbers keep growing. The facilities keep growing. The festival that helps to make it all possible keeps growing. Edward L. Kouder has watched much of that growth since he moved to Harlan.
