New Haven Chamber of Commerce has been serving its nearly 400 business members and city residents from the historic 1913 building at 428 Broadway for a few months. With that move in the books, an open house/block party is being planned for 5 p.m. Thursday, July 6, that will include tours of the building, music and food. According to Charlie Hatten, president and CEO of the Chamber of Commerce, ”this is exactly where it should be located. The Chamber needs to be on the main drag of town, right in the center of everything and not on some back street.” For the past 10 years the Chamber had been situated in a couple small rooms in the old library at the corner of Ann and
Main streets. “Mayor Terry McDonald came to me late last year,” said Hatten, “and asked if we would be interested in moving over here and rejuvenating the place. In spite of the fact that it was generally in terrible shape with plaster falling off the walls, ceilings sagging and tiles missing, it had a lot of potential. In addition it more than tripled the size of our former location. So we leased it from the city and are really happy we did. “First thing we did was replace all the incandescent light bulbs with LED bulbs, install a new thermostat and repair the toilets. Just doing that saved a lot on our utility bills. Then, we hired our member firms to make the place presentable. Angie Wagner of A.W. See CHAMBER, Page A13

The Leo Freedom Festival is focusing on the St. Joseph River as it celebrates 17 years June 30-July 1. “It’s such a beautiful river. It’s a whole different perspective when you’re on the water looking over to the land,” said Katherine Cassidy, secretary for the Leo-Cedarville Foundation, which sponsors the festival. For the first time there will be pontoon rides on the river, Cassidy said. There will also be a company offering kayak rides as well as possible remote control boat demonstrations, she said. “We want people to be able to get involved (with the river),” Cassidy said. “We want it to be a destination for family fun.” A sand volleyball
