EAU plans contemporary ‘Emma!’ By Garth Snow gsnow@kpcmedia.com

What would Jane Austen think of the latest take on “Emma” on stage after 202 years? Shannon R. Eichenauer and Nichole Decker won’t presume to speak for the 19th-century English novelist. But the East Allen University teachers and drama advisers will venture a guess that Austen would appreciate the high school’s focus on its young women. The EAU student production of “Emma!” will feature the modern music of Natasha Bedingfield and contemporaries, but it will honor the outline of Austen’s 1815 novel. “If she were alive today, she would understand,” Eichenauer said. “She would appreciate it, I would think, and she would be excited because it’s very girl-centric and we have a very high population of girls here at EAU, and I think it’s

If economic development is truly the lifeblood of a community, then New Haven has a healthy stream of activity ahead to maintain it. New Haven Mayor Terry McDonald announced three new developments during the state of the city address March 13. “Last year was by far the busiest year for economic development here in New Haven and we are forecasting that 2017 will be no different,” McDonald said. Recreational vehicle and residential housing supplier Lippert Components Inc., whose parent LCI Industries is based in Mishawaka, plans to build a 400,000-square-foot manufacturing facility on Ryan Road. The new facility would create 275 new jobs, while retaining all of the jobs the company currently has at its location on Nelson Road, McDonald

said. In addition, the Canadian automotive engineer and manufacturer Multimatic will be purchasing the former Vera Bradley factory on Adams Center Road with the plan to create 175 new jobs this year and an additional 80 jobs in 2018. Vera Bradley closed its operation in the leased space, where it employed about 250 people, in the spring of 2015. Also, the former Parker Hannifin plant on Rose Avenue is under negotiation for a 100-percent occupancy, long-term lease, McDonald said. The owners of the property have said that they will also need to build a new building on the property for its own use and two additional companies are interested in building two more facilities. Save Maumee believes Earth Day is a time for action. So, from April 21-23, the group aims to plant 1,100 trees in Trier Ditch. Save Maumee began when Abigail King bought a house along the Maumee River. She was looking forward to her “beachfront” property, she said, but was told by many she shouldn’t go in the river due to its condition. In 2005, Save Maumee planted its first trees in an effort to improve that water quality. Recently, Save Maumee received a Federal Great Lakes Restoration Initiative grant from the U.S. Department of Agricul-
