Structural insulated panels offer options Q. I am considering using SIPs (structural insulated panels) to build a new home. Is there anyone in this area who builds with them? Are they cost effective and do they work like post and beam construction so they are good for open floor plans with little weight on interior walls? — Vicki on Lake SQUARE George CORNERS A. SIPs panels have been available Jeff Deahl for years and they have improved the design and efficiency of them over the years. There are several manufacturers of insulated panels, and for them to be used structurally they need to be
engineered and stamped. Basically they are foam insulation sandwiched between two pieces of OSB or plywood. Sometimes they will have drywall on the interior layer and the exterior can be cedar panels or T-111 wood siding. They are set up one panel after another with a 2x4 or 6” spline between panels to hold them together and are set over a 2x4 or 6” bottom plate. The panels are structural by the laminating process with the strength of the OSB sheeting and do not have headers over windows and doors. If you cut the panels you affect the structure. There are some difficulties running electrical into the exterior walls and today’s manufacturers provide wiring chases in the panels. We built a couple of these homes several years ago and really any construction company can assemble

these structures with basic carpentry skills. The manufacturers will provide full working drawings and assembly instructions and will ship the panelized numbered package right to your job site. You can assemble a SIPs floor system onto a crawl or basement foundation or frame a stick framed floor then frame to exterior wall system. The interior walls are standard framed and the roof can be a standard stick framed or panelized SIPs panels. Often they are used when your house structure is of post and beam construction or timber framed and the insulated wall and roof panels provide the insulation envelope over the framing. Gardening: quick and easy strawberries BY LEE REICH
(AP) — Given how quickly strawberries begin to bear fruit and how easily they are grown, it’s a wonder that strawberry beds aren’t as common in backyards as lawns are in front yards. The most compelling reason to grow strawberries is, of course, flavor. Variety selection and premature harvest make grocers’ berries large and firm, but usually not much else. In your backyard, though, you can grow the most flavorful varieties, and wait to pick them until they’re sweet and oozing strawberry-ness. At that point, perishability doesn’t matter because the berries need not travel further than arm’s length to your mouth or a basket.
Kinds of strawberries Depending on how soon you want to start eating strawberries, choose between “everbearers” and “junebearers.”
Everbearers offer the quickest crops, less than three months after planting, and bear all season long. Tristar is among the best of these types. Some of the older types bear in spring and fall only. Junebearers come in greater variety and yield more, but wait to bear their first crop until the year after planting. Once started, they bear once per season, in spring or early summer. Planting two or more different junebearing varieties can extend the harvest.
Growing strawberries Spring is a good time to plant strawberries, although they can also be planted in late summer or fall — if you can get plants then. Your new plants may look forlorn, but don’t worry. They soon grow new roots and leaves. In fact, you can shear their roots back to three or four inches long

with a scissors so you can more easily fan them out in the planting hole. Adjust the planting depth carefully, leaving only the top half-inch of the crown exposed so that it neither dries out from exposure nor suffocates from burial. Ever wonder how such a luscious fruit came to be called “strawberry?” The name might reflect the plants’ habit of strewing about with runners, which are horizontal stems punctuated along their length by daughter plants. The daughter plants eventually root and make their own runners. The name “strawberry” might also come from a centuries-old favorite mulch for strawberries: straw. No matter how the strawberry got its name, the plants love to be mulched. Mulch keeps the soil moist, suppresses weeds and keeps the fruit cleaner. Give strawberries a year-round, organic mulch.

Repurpose antiques for the garden When it comes to collectibles, it is always wise to know what you’ve got and know what it’s worth. Some objects like planters, mugs, cups and vases can be very valuable but some are just collectible and cheap, too. So, once you have an accurate appraisal of your antique and find out if it is trash or treasure, you might want to consider new ART & ways to use and enjoy ANTIQUES it. Before you send that inexpensive vintage piece out to the curb, consider transforming it into doing double duty in your garden.
