Grabill Country Fair ‘still worth your while’ Snider, USF share
marching band fest

Some may think that after so many years, local festivals may start to get stale. But Diane Delagrange and the folks who work all year to put on the Grabill Country Fair, which runs Sept. 7-9 this year, insist that isn’t the case. This belief is echoed in the fair’s theme for its 45th iteration: Still worth your while. “That means after 44 years it’s still worth coming back,” Delagrange said. Delagrange knows this fair about as well as anyone. She was on the fair committee for 35 years and her husband, Wilmer, has been on the committee for 44 years. The fair, started in 1973, pays tribute to the area’s Amish heritage and a slower way of life many people seek, Delagrange said. “It’s just a small-town atmosphere,” she said. “It’s not a carnival, it’s an arts and crafts festival [that] kind of takes you back in

time.” Much of the entertainment, demonstrations and contests hearken to this idea. Bob Hart will play the hammered dulcimer at town hall from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday and Friday and from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. There will be demonstrations on gourd art, quilting, corn
husk crafts, rug braiding and spinning at the Grabill Missionary Church. There will be a watermelon eating contest Thursday at 6:30 p.m. and arm wrestling, cherry pit spitting and nail driving contests throughout the day
Saturday. But even these old-fashioned activities aren’t what get people most excited about the Grabill Country Fair. As with most community events, it comes down to the food and the parade. See FAIR, Page A12
The University of Saint Francis is partnering with Snider High School to launch the Parade of Champions marching band invitational on Saturday, Sept. 16. Kevin Klee will direct the Snider Mighty Panther marching band for the 30th season. His co-coordinator at USF is Steven Kandow, who joined USF to launch the USF Marching Pride in 2016. Klee and Snider hosted invitationals for 14 years. Klee said Snider is the only Fort Wayne Community Schools high school that does not have its own football field, so Snider hosted the event from the Wayne High School field. “Of course Wayne has a grass field, and more and more schools are going to the artificial turf and more schools were designing their shows for the artificial turf where the props
move more easily,” he said. “So we were losing a lot of the big schools that used to come out to the show and we weren’t making any money,” he said. “We discontinued it three years ago and this year we had the opportunity to get with the University of Saint Francis. They have a lovely stadium and grand new Astroturf out there. It has been used by Drum Corps [International] for two years.” Klee said the invitational will give high school students some exposure to the college field, and will give the university a chance to showcase its campus. “It’s a win-win situation,” he said. Klee said he hopes 15 to 20 bands will accept the invitation. “It’s going to start at 11 a.m., and that will give bands an opporSee BAND, Page A18
Team Gilbert ‘CUREnival’ supports MDA research Among their leagues of friends throughout the Muscular Dystrophy Association network, they are Team Gilbert. They raise money for research and to fight 44 neuromuscular diseases. They serve as the face of the MDA when fire departments hold Fill-theBoot drives. They support other teams at golf outings and motorcycle rides. For the second year, Team Gilbert will stage the “CUREnival” at Havenhurst Park in New Haven. Among their neighbors in a cul-de-sac behind Blackhawk Middle School in Fort Wayne, they are simply the Gilbert family. Shannon and B.J. are Mom and Dad. Zach, 20, is the big brother. From his motorized chair at the kitchen table, he keeps an eye on 11-year-old Mason who prefers to listen from
