‘Grease’ cast swells Snider stage By Garth Snow gsnow@kpcmedia.com
Travel through time to music of the ’70s, “Summer Nights” in the ’50s and a “Greased Lightning” hot rod from the ’40s when Snider High School stages “Grease.” “These 1950s costumes are not something the kids normally wear,” said Grace Quigley, assistant director and costumes coordinator. “They’re wearing saddle shoes and pedal pushers and poodle skirts and leather jackets. “The kids have been collecting things, things that they have at home. We ask them to clean out their closet, their neighbor’s closet and their grandma’s closet.” Karen Benson directs the student production. Shows are at 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday, March 23 and 24. Admission is $10. Snider High School is at 4600 Fairlawn Pass, east of Coliseum Boulevard, in Fort Wayne. Fairlawn is west off Reed

The cast of “Grease” rocks to the music as Snider High School gears up for a show based on the stage musical, with something borrowed from the movie.

ning streaks across the white body. Red-rimmed white walls support the topless coupe. “She’s a beauty,” Benson said. Vocals director Margaret Buttermore said the stage musical that became a movie is adapted once again for the Snider production.
This is the family-friendly version, she said. Snider also negotiated for two songs from the movie that were not in the stage play. “The music is so much fun,” she said. The stage version varies in its focus, too, she said. “The play is not so much See GREASE, Page A14
High school winter guard units soon will finish three months of competition. Guard units have been setting up, performing and exhibiting at gyms at 7-minute intervals. They will continue that pace again on March 11 and perhaps again at the state finals March 18. “By the time the kids perform and put everything away it’s time to get back on the bus,” said Brittany Satterthwaite, the Concordia Lutheran High School winter guard coach. Just for one night — Friday, March 17 — there will be no awards and no hurry. “It’s actually just a fun thing,” Satterthwaite said. “We call it the Area Showcase, and it is really so the kids can meet each other and perform for the parents. It’s super informal.” So informal, in fact, that

Director Rick Luedeke is enthusiastic about Blackhawk Christian Theatre’s presentation of “The King and I.” “I have not done a classic before,” he said. “Never a Rodgers and Hammerstein in all my years of teaching!” But just last year, the musical found a revival on Broadway. “The King and I” is making a tour throughout the United States and Luedeke could see that the Blackhawk Christian School students entering the 2017 spring semester would be ready for the challenge. So it was time. With a cast of 50 student actors and musicians, it’s “the largest cast I’ve ever worked with,”
