Warm fellowship Our family grew by one this past summer. Yep, the kids talked us into getting a puppy — a goldendoodle to be exact. Her name is Luna and she has quickly entrenched herself into our little family. Of course our schedule keeps us moving so there are times she is home without us, and she is content to nap and do whatever it is she does while we’re away. Yet, when we get home, she is by far the happiest dog you’ll ever meet. She loves being with us, hearing us, playing with the kids and following us around the house. If it’s just the two of us at home she’ll be in whatever room I’m in. If we’re eating dinner around the table she will be laying underneath; she simply enjoys being with her family. As the kids and I have discussed this coming holiday season I’ve asked them, “What is it that you look forward to the most when you think of this coming Christmas time?” Without hesitation they look forward to simply being with family. Beyond the food, the gifts and the vacation time they simply enjoy being with their family. As I reflect on what seems like so many Christmas seasons, I cannot remember all the gifts, the vacation activities and delicious food, but my mind
is flooded with fond memories of people. Just being with family and friends, hearing them talk and reminisce and laugh and spending time together is what I long for in a culture so busy and isolated. In a time when we boast about being so “connected” I feel we’ve never been further apart. Our Creator God made us for relationships. First and foremost with Himself and also with other people made in His image. Nothing displays this more than Jesus coming to Earth and putting on flesh. What man had done to separate himself from God at the fall God brought back together in the birth, life, death and resurrection of Jesus. He brought us back into intimate relationship with Himself and gave us the church for deep fellowship with one another. It makes sense that the greatest part of the holidays is celebrating the profound hope of Christ’s birth with one another. I’m so grateful that I can look back on fond memories, feel the blessing of present relationships and look forward to continuing fellowship with people. I know not everyone is so richly blessed. Still, because of Christ’s birth and his victory over death, even if these blessings should

be stripped away, Christmas has provided a deep hope that cannot be taken from us. Knowing this hope may we reach out to those still searching for joy. This Christmas I guess we’ll follow our new furry family member Luna’s lead. We’ll simply enjoy the family and friends that God has blessed us with and we’ll invite others less fortunate to our table

to enjoy the warm fellowship as well. Thanks be to God for sending His only Son to illuminate this dark world, making salvation possible and providing warm fellowship with one another. Merry Christmas! Brian Walter and family South Milford Church of Christ

Blessed Advent
Advent began on Dec. 2 this year. Advent means “coming” or “visit,” and starts four Sundays before Christmas and ends on Christmas Eve. The season of Advent is the beginning of the liturgical year for Christians. During Advent, we prepare for and anticipate the coming of Christ. We remember the longing of Jews for a Messiah and our own longing as Christians for forgiveness, salvation and a new start. As we reflect upon and celebrate Jesus’ birth in a Bethlehem manger, we also anticipate Christ’s second coming as the fulfillment of all that was promised by his first appearance. There are three meanings of ‘coming’ that Christians ascribe to Advent. The first occurred when Jesus entered the world as a baby to live as a human and to die for our sins. The second can happen now as Jesus wants to come into our lives today. The third will happen in the future when Jesus returns as the world’s king. Some people fast during advent to help them concentrate on preparing to celebrate Jesus’ coming. Orthodox Christians often don’t eat meat and dairy during Advent and depending on the day, also olive oil, wine and fish. In medieval and pre-medieval times in
parts of England, there was an early form of Nativity scenes called ‘advent images’ or a “vessel cup.” They were a box, often with a glass lid that was covered with a white napkin. It contained two dolls representing Mary and the baby Jesus. The box was decorated with ribbons and flowers. They were carried from door to door and it was thought to be unlucky if you hadn’t seen a box before Christmas Eve. People paid the box carriers to see it. There are some Christmas carols that are really Advent carols! These include “People Look East,” “Come, thou long expected Jesus,” “Lo! He comes, with clouds descending” and perhaps the most popular Advent song “O Come, O Come Emmanuel!” There are several ways that Advent is counted down, but the most common is by the use of candles. It is my hope and prayer that you will use this season of Advent to reflect and consider what the coming of Jesus truly signifies and means. Have a blessed Advent and a merry Christmas! Holy season In this holy time of the year, we gather for our celebration of Advent and Christmas. Advent is a time of preparation to celebrate the Nativity of our Lord. We’re reminded of His most holy birth and the anticipation that comes with the waiting for the fulfillment of God’s promise to send the One who would defeat Satan once and for all. We’re preparing to sing those songs of the birth of the One who alone can bring everlasting life through His own death and resurrection. And we invite all to join us as we gather around His Holy Word, hearing what God has done for us. You are truly special to Christ because He saw fit to be born to die for your sake. He sees His image in you, and draws you to Himself to hear of the great love that He has for us all. Please prayerfully consider the opportunities to gather around Christ, at His manger and His cross, and see just what God has done so that you would have life in Him. Restore relationships through Christ I don’t know about you but as we move into December, I look forward to all the special Christmas shows on television during this season. Many of them portray miracles and fantasies that come true as Santa or an angel somehow intervene in people’s circumstances and everything works out for good. Usually the theology of these programs leaves much to be desired. However, there is one Christmas show that I really enjoy. It is definitely my favorite. The show I am talking about first aired in 1965 and is based on a comic strip written by Charles Schultz. For many of you that will be enough information for you to have guessed that my favorite Christmas show is “A Charlie Brown Christmas.” Poor Charlie Brown picks the scraggliest, ugliest tree on the lot because he feels sorry for it. Of course the other kids all make fun of the tree and of him. It is at this point that Linus comes on stage and recites the birth narrative from Luke, chapter 2. This reminds everyone what Christmas is really all about. In the last scene the scraggly little tree is decorated and becomes this beautiful
Happy Holidays!
Christmas tree. Why is this my favorite Christmas show? For one thing it is unashamedly Christian in content. Everyone is openly reminded that the birth of the Christ Child should be the focus of the season and is the reason why Christmas is celebrated. Another reason is that I enjoy seeing what happens to the scraggly little tree. It reminds me of the potential that is present in people. With a little attention, care, and love the “ugliest” little tree becomes very beautiful. This is also true for many people who, with a little attention, care and love, blossom into very beautiful people. I also love the way that Charlie Brown’s relationship with the other children is changed by the introduction of the Christ Child by Linus. Charlie Brown is made fun of by the other children until he is driven from where the Christmas play is being rehearsed. However, after the story of Christ’s birth is told by Linus, the children follow Charlie home and decorate the scraggly little tree. As they sing a carol around the now beautiful Christmas tree, Charlie Brown comes and joins them, thus the broken relationship is restored by the Christ Child. This same Christ continues to restore broken relationships to this day. This babe, born of the Virgin Mary, restores the broken relationship between God and humanity and restores broken relationships between people. May the joy of this special Christmas season be yours in abundance, Pastor Gene Hartman Emma Church, Topeka
