Death lost its sting When I was in college, I worked at a golf course in the maintenance department. One of my main tasks at the golf course was mowing the greens six mornings a week. Most days I would be at the course just as the sun was coming up but there were sometimes when I had to get to the course well before daylight. I would literally be mowing for about an hour in the dark. Now, I did have a light attached to my mower that gave me plenty of light to see where I was going. They would not have appreciated me mowing the greens without a light! That hour or so before the sun started to rise was always a surreal time. It was generally very quiet outside of the hum of my mower. The world hadn’t quite woken up yet. The birds were still sleeping, the raccoons, owls and other night creatures were heading back into the woods to sleep, and the deer hadn’t started to venture out of the woods. I could imagine that the scene described in the Gospels isn’t much different than what I had experienced on the golf course before dawn. It was dark, before the

sun came up, and Mary Magdalene was already on the move. My guess is that Mary Magdalene couldn’t sleep. She was anxious because sabbath was ending and she wanted to get to Jesus’ tomb as fast as she could. There was work to do and she wanted to get there before everyone else had the chance. When she arrived, she saw that the giant stone had been rolled away. She saw the stone rolled away but she didn’t shout, “Christ is risen!” She had heard Jesus speaking of his resurrection but she didn’t assume resurrection. We struggle with living like the empty tomb has made a difference. We gather at our respective churches to celebrate the most important, world changing event in human history every spring, then we walk out those church doors and walk back into the world and struggle to believe that the resurrection made any real difference. We celebrate the Easter day but we struggle to feel joy, hope or certainty amid our pains, hurts, and difficult times. More often than not we feel like Mary Magdalene as she stands at the entrance to the tomb weeping

because her Savior isn’t there, thinking he’s been stolen rather than resurrected. But all it took was for the “gardener” to say her name… “Mary”… for Mary Magdalene to realize that it was Jesus. While Mary is thrilled to see Jesus, Jesus has an important task for her: “go to my brothers and tell them…” So it is Mary Magdalene, a woman, a follower of Jesus, who is tasked with being the first to announce to the disciples, “I’ve seen the Lord.” It was Mary Magdalene (not Peter, not John, not Paul, not the other apostles) who was the first preacher of the Gospel of Jesus. It was a woman who first shared the Good News that Jesus was alive. We often forget (or overlook) this part of the story. History has not been kind to Mary Magdalene (from being called, inaccurately, a prostitute, to Jesus’ lover) but the gospels leave little room to doubt her importance in the resurrection narrative. Without Mary Magdalene, without a woman, the resurrection narrative would be different. Jesus did not show up when Peter and the rest of the disciples were there. He waited until Mary was alone again. Would

we even know about the resurrection? Would the disciples have ever found out? Maybe, maybe not. We just don’t know. Everything changed on that morning. Everything. When Mary Magdalene encounters Jesus at the entrance to the tomb, the darkness lost its grip on the world and light burst through the pain and grief. Now, that doesn’t mean that the darkness continues to put up a fight. We know that. We just have to turn on our televisions or go to our computers or newspapers or smartphones to understand that. But with the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, the power of death no longer controls us. The power of cynicism and despair no longer determine our value as beloved children of God. The power of violence and corruption are sent back to the hell from which they came. Death has lost its sting. Joy and peace rule! For that we give thanks and praise to God! Rev. Easter and the Earth Throughout this Lenten season, I have been seeing connections between Easter and our care for Creation. Maybe it’s because Earth Day falls the day after Easter this year. Maybe it’s because when we began our Lenten journey on Ash Wednesday, Hoosier Interfaith Power and Light (H-IPL) was hosting a Renewable Energy Day at the Statehouse where, among many topics, the impacts of coal ash were discussed. This seemed a fitting topic as we commemorated Ash Wednesday. As we thought about our own mortality, we could also think about the mortality of this Earth, the ways we humans have harmed and damaged this planet we all call home. When I think of Easter, I am filled with joy and new hope, but this is not always the case when I think of the Earth. I see the challenges we face in our culture of convenience and consumerism and wonder how we will ever value the life of the Earth appropriately. In this state, so

much of our demands for energy are met with coal, and after that is burned, coal ash remains. This coal ash can contaminate the water we, and other animals, rely on, with detrimental consequences. So I contend that as we are celebrating the joy and hope of Easter, we also contemplate the way we might care for the Earth. I cannot help but think of a sermon a colleague shared titled “From Eco-Crucifixion to Eco-Resurrection” as I contemplate these intersections of Earth and Easter. As Rev. Dr. Leah Schade suggests, when we think about the crucifixion story, we must recognize that Jesus’ death is connected with the ongoing crucifixion of the planet. The good news, of course, is that we are in Easter. We know that God’s power of life and love is greater than our demand for death. We know that God conquers the grave and the tomb is empty. It is knowing the Easter story that gives me hope for our Earth’s story. While humanity may

cry out for the death of the earth, God is at work to bring life. One of the ways I see God at work in the world on this issue is through H-IPL, who seeks to help all faiths care for Creation in practical ways, such as addressing energy usage in congregations (which usually frees up money for more ministry). As a Christian, I know that the risen body of Christ, spread out across the world and across time, is made up of members knit together by the power of the Holy Spirit, continuing to share the power of the resurrection. This body of Christ continues to labor for the sake of the world and all that is in it. We proclaim “Christ is risen!” not just for humanity, but for all of Creation, so that all may know the love of God that brings life out of death. It is Easter, dear brothers and sisters! Alleluia! The resurrected king is resurrecting me During my years as a pastor I have learned the power of music to touch people’s hearts. For many, the portion of a worship service where they feel closest to God is while they are singing the hymns or the praise and worship songs. Christian hymns and praise songs have a way of lodging the truth of God’s good news deep into our souls. At Easter there are certain hymns that we tend to sing at our traditional service such as “Christ the Lord Is Risen Today,” “Up From the Grave He Arose,” “He Lives,” and “Because He Lives.” I confess each of these hymns stir my soul. There is nothing better than a church full of believers singing their full-throated praise to God with hymns like these. As a pastor, coming up with great Easter songs for a more contemporary service like the Gathering has always been a bit of a struggle. There doesn’t seem to be as many praise choruses or songs that deal with the resurrection. However, that is changing. A few years ago, when I first heard “In Christ Alone” I was blown away by the lines in the third verse which dealt with the resurrection. There in the ground His body lay/Light of the world by darkness slain/Then bursting forth in glorious Day/Up from the grave He rose again — Getty & Townsend Such powerful words that speak to the truth

of what happened when Jesus came out of the grave on that first Easter morning. More recently, another song has been written about the resurrection appropriately entitled “Resurrecting.” It came to us from Elevation Worship. What I really like about this song is that it speaks to the truth that our celebration of Easter isn’t just about celebrating that Jesus came forth in resurrection power but that God wants to resurrect us as well. By Your spirit I will rise/From the ashes of defeat/The resurrected king, is resurrecting me/In Your name I come alive/To declare Your victory/The resurrected king, is resurrecting me — Brown, Joye, Furtick, Ntele & Brock When I first heard this song, I had been going through a rough time physically, emotionally and spiritually. The idea that I would be able to “rise from the ashes of defeat” because “the resurrected King is resurrecting me” gave me a fresh hope and courage. The same power that raised Jesus from the dead was and is at work in me. It may be that as we approach Easter this year that you feel hopeless, defeated and that your life is over.
