Out, spot: How to combat blackspot on roses THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

If it’s your rose bush rather than your dog that you’re calling “spot,” then it’s time for action. And getting rid of blackspot — the disease that’s marring your roses — need not mean dowsing the plant with chemicals. Let’s first get to know the enemy: Diplocarpan rosae, a fungus feared by rosarians almost everywhere. Those black spots, if you look closely, have fringed edges and black pimples at their centers to distinguish them from other possible leafspotting diseases. Infected leaves soon yellow, then drop, meaning less energy for the bush which, in turn, means fewer flowers and sometimes the death of the plant. Over the almost 200 years that the disease has been known, its causal fungus has paraded under about 25 different scientific names. Still, its life cycle is simple.

A year in the life of black spot disease Blackspot disease spent the winter mostly in infected leaves that fell to the ground. Spring warmth and rain awakened the fungus to shoot spores up into the rosebush and infect young, unfolding leaves. Moisture was needed to get those spores moving, and then the leaves had to stay moist for a few hours before infection could set in. Another, lesser source of infection is infected areas wintering on young canes. Once spores get up into the bush in spring, infection can continue through the summer as spores hopscotch from leaf to leaf. As with the initial infection from fallen leaves, spores are released and get footholds only when moisture is present for enough time.

First steps at prevention Blackspot needs moisture to take hold, so one way to control it is to plant rose bushes where they will dry off quickly from dew and rain: in full sunlight (which roses need for best flowering anyway), and away from walls or dense shrubs where air can stagnate. This also means pruning away enough stems that

remaining ones can bathe in drying light and air. And, of course, wet the ground, not the leaves, when watering and avoid working among the bushes when they are wet. We can also put roadblocks in blackspot’s life cycle. Gathering up and composting the leaves the bush drops in autumn can lessen the amount of disease inoculum the following spring. Even better is to mulch the ground sometime between late autumn and late winter, each year leaving old mulch in place as you pile on new. Besides mulch’s usual benefits, in this case it also acts as a barrier to keep that first batch of spores from the leaves. As for those spores that come from infections on the stem, drastic pruning is a good way to deal with them.

Plan Before Planting Roses vary in susceptibility to blackspot, and the easiest way to deal with it is to grow a plant that won’t get diseased in the first place. Unfortunately, the most commonly grown roses, hybrid teas, are also generally the most susceptible to disease. Even among hybrid teas, though, there are varieties that resist blackspot, such as Tropicana, Mister Lincoln, Pink Peace, Carefree Beauty and Keepsake. Some grandiflora and floribunda types that resist

blackspot include Queen Elizabeth, Sonia, Betty Prior and Bonica. Don’t put too much stock in blackspot resistance, though, because there are a number of races of the blackspot fungus, so a variety may be resistant in one locale but not in another. More reliable resistance is found among so-called species and shrub roses. Blackspot usually doesn’t cause problems with Father Hugo’s Rose, rugosa roses, and some of the newer varieties of shrub and landscape roses, such as some of the David Austin roses (especially the variety The Mayflower), the Knock-Out and the Canadian Explorer series of roses, and varieties of Buck Roses.

Spraying, A Last Resort If you already have roses in the ground and don’t want to replace them, and they have a relatively good site, and you prune and mulch them, you could still be calling your rosebush Spot. Even then, before you reach for some highly toxic pesticide, try a more benign alternative: baking soda, that universal cure for everything from dirty dishpans to smelly refrigerators. Mix a tablespoon and a half, along with either a few drops of dish detergent or two tablespoons of summer oil (also called horticultural oil) per gallon of water and spray weekly. For some gardeners, this spray makes Spot a dog’s name again.

Expand your yard’s horizons, for free THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

If your garden or yard is feeling too small, expand your horizons without buying another square inch of property or doing much work. Just borrow some landscape. “Borrowed landscape” is a technique frequently used in designing Japanese gardens, where it is called shakkei, but it can be employed in any garden style. The idea is to incorporate distant elements of the surrounding landscape into your own, creating the feeling of greater space. You could reap a feeling of infinite space if that distant element is a mountain or ocean that stretches all the way to the horizon. Or you could just borrow a bit of scenery from your neighbor’s yard — an attractive clump of birch or larch trees, a grape arbor or a pergola dripping with wisteria blooms, for example.

Begin your borrowing First, look around to see what you’d like to borrow. Ideally, this should be done before you plan or plant anything, even before you’ve moved any dirt or stones around in your own garden. But it’s usually not difficult to borrow landscape even into an existing garden. No need to borrow a whole scene. A view of a lumbering meadow that breaks into a range of mountains might create too expansive a feeling if on view from everywhere in your garden. Part of the art in gardening is balancing a sense of coziness and enclosure, which gives us the word “garden” (from the same root as the words guard, yard and girth), with a feeling for the infinite, for limitless horizons. A window of some expansive scene — through an opening in a fence or hedge, for example — might make such a view all the more precious. As for your neighbor’s pergola clothed in wisteria: You might not want to also see the red sports car he always parks nearby.

Bring focus to what you want to borrow Once you’ve decided which surrounding scenery you might like to borrow, bring it on home to your garden.

This might entail nothing more than planting or building something to obstruct part of a view, thus lending focus to what remains. Or it might require removing some obstruction, such as a pine tree in the wrong place or a fence that’s too tall. Most borrowed scenery represents just a slice of what is out there, so bringing it home might just mean selectively trimming that pine tree or making just a hole in the fence. A cut in the fence in itself contributes to the look of the garden. Popular in both oriental and occidental gardens are fences or walls with “moon windows,” circular openings that allow a chosen view. By screening out much of the landscape beyond, a small opening begs viewing of it; a relatively narrow rectangular opening in a fence or wall can bring attention to a distant view. A pair of prominent evergreens and a

nonfunctional gate could provide a psychological entryway into your borrowed landscape.

Mimic to bring the outside in Another way to borrow landscape is to echo elements in the distant landscape with similar elements in your garden. A grouping of rocks in your space might show kinship with a similarly shaped distant mountain. A small but upright tree might form a connection to stately, spired conifers in the distance. A trickle of water — even rounded stones representing a dry streambed — might form a visual association with a majestic waterway far away. In most cases, borrowing a landscape entails less muscle than creating one.

Sunflowers have many uses In my opinion, the happy-face of the plant world is a big, beautiful, yellow sunflower. They can be grown as a cash crop for their edible seed and oil or for the sunshine they add to a floral arrangement. Sunflowers (Helianthus annuus) grow rather rapidly producing large, rough leaves and KNOWLEDGE seed laden heads. TO GROW The yellow petals that you see around Karen Weiland the outside of the head are ray petals, attracting pollinators to the disk and the face of the head actually contains hundreds of disk flowers, each of which will form a seed. Sunflower

heads turn with or track the sun during the early stages of their development. This aids in light exposure and photosynthesis. After pollination the disk will remain eastfacing and eventually turn downward to protect the seeds from solar radiation. Seeds may be planted about 1 inch deep after the soil has reached a temperature of 50 degrees and all danger of frost has passed through mid-July. Sunflowers prefer welldrained, sandy loam soil and 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight. I have not had much of a problem with diseases or insects. Grasshoppers and caterpillars like to feed on the leaves but not so much that it has been detrimental to the plant or yield. As with everything else in the garden, good crop rotation will prevent problems with sunflowers.

Protect the seed from birds by covering the head with burlap or netting. Sunflower seeds are considered mature when the back of the seed head is yellow. Remove the entire head and place it in a bag or wrap it in cheesecloth and hang it in a cool, dry, dark area to finish drying. After about 2 weeks the seed should be ready for eating, either by you or the birds. The birds like them raw but I like them roasted. Arrange the dried seeds in a shallow pan and roast them at 300 degrees for 30 to 40 minutes. There are so many different varieties and colors of sunflowers to choose from. Concrete answer avoids topless problem Q. Should I pressure wash my cement and apply a sealer? Terry, Kendallville A. Ah, a question near to my heart, and easy to give a concrete answer to. Thanks, Terry. First of all cement, is one of the ingredients in concrete — kind of the glue that makes the water and gravel into something hard and durable. That is why I admire it so. You can certainly use a high pressure washer on your SQUARE concrete. Do exercise CORNERS caution, especially when using very high psi (3,500 and Fred Kreigh greater). The pressure of the water right at the tip of the wand can score the surface of even old concrete leaving a strip that cannot be removed. If you have a difficult stain, possibly some kind of

algae or the tannin from a decomposing leaf stuck on your concrete, start by scrubbing that area with a cleaner then pressure wash it clean. The surface of concrete can be affected by the intrusion of water; it is actually a very porous surface. When that water freezes, it creates problems for the surface usually in the form of scaling and spalling. Spalling is when the smooth top layer of fine cement pops off exposing the aggregate underneath and leaving a less than attractive surface. Add road salts that your car drags in and you will have a topless driveway in a couple of years — not at all exciting. This is where the sealer comes into play. It’s a good thing to protect your concrete surfaces from water intrusion, but critical wherever your vehicle drags in road salts. There are penetrating sealers and those that provide a surface film. Most penetrating sealers are silicons, they actually chemically combine in the capillaries of the concrete to prevent water entry. These products do not change the appearance of the

concrete and can typically only be detected by pouring water on the surface and watching it bead. They are made as water-based and solvent based products. The water-based products have come a long way, but I still prefer solventbased. Solvent-based product smells bad and should only be used in wellventilated areas due to high volatile organic compounds (voc) content. Far and away the most popular and cost effective sealers are acrylic sealers. They provide a surface film that protects the concrete. These sealers usually darken the surface and are frequently slippery when wet, but so is soap. Buy an acrylic sealer with high solid content (30 percent) for longer life. Like anything else, a bit of maintenance will keep your concrete looking great for the long term. FRED KREIGH is president of the Builders Association of Northeast Indiana.
