Banish bathroom mold and mildew METRO CREATIVE
Mold and mildew thrive in dark, warm and wet areas, which makes bathrooms prime territory for these unsightly substances. Learning about the conditions that are conducive to the growth of these fungi can help homeowners keep mold and mildew at bay. Mold and mildew can grow on just about any surface, including wood, glass, tiles, grout, silicone, porcelain, and many other materials. Perfect conditions for mold and mildew growth include areas that have poor or low air circulation and ventilation, low lighting, high humidity, dampness, and warm temperatures. Considering bathrooms generally meet this criteria, mold and mildew are commonplace in bathrooms. Mildew is a form of mold. Health experts say that mold can cause asthma, sinusitis and other breathing problems. Others claim it may lead to more serious health implications, such as cancer, immune-system disorders and memory loss. However, research has yet to determine if there’s a connection. The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that there are between 50 to 100
common indoor mold types that have the potential to cause health problems. Mold and mildew can also make rooms smell bad and musty, while the appearance of mold can mar a normally attractive-looking bathroom. These substances tend to spread quickly, so it’s up to homeowners to get it under control before mold and mildew become a problem. • Control humidity. Humid conditions breed mold and mildew. Open a window before and after showering and bathing, or turn on the exhaust fan and let it run for a while to clear out the humidity. • Shed some light on the situation. Darkness is a friend to mold and mildew. Keep the lights on in the bathroom after showering to inhibit growth. When the bathroom is not in use, leave the blinds or drapes open if there is a window to let in natural sunlight and some fresh air. • Test home humidity. A hygrometer tests the humidity levels in a home. Levels above 60 percent can breed mold and mildew. Consider using a dehumidifier in the home to take humidity out of the air. Industry experts advise keeping home humidity between 30 and 60 percent for optimal comfort and safety.
• Wipe down the shower walls. Use a squeegee or a wash cloth to wipe down damp walls and the tub to remove excess water. • Use bleach and vinegar. Bleach and vinegar inhibit the growth of mold and mildew. Use a cleaning solution of vinegar and water, which is less caustic than bleach, or mix five parts water to one part chlorine bleach to clean bathroom surfaces. Use a stiff-bristled brush or old toothbrush to get into grout lines. If there is mold growing in the corners of tile where the tub meets the tile, soak a cotton ball in bleach and place in the corner. Remove a few minutes later and rinse. • Saltwater soak. After cleaning shower curtains in the washing machine, soak them in a saltwater solution to prevent the growth of mold and mildew in the future. •Use special paint. Fungus can grow on the paint in a bathroom as well. Use a special mildew-resistant paint in areas prone to moisture. Mold and mildew have grown in just about everyone’s bathroom at some time. By eliminating the conditions that help it thrive, it’s possible to keep these fungi in check.

Growing azaleas and rhododendrons Site selection is important when considering where to plant azaleas and rhododendrons. They prefer welldrained, light, acid soil, plenty of moisture during the growing season, protection from winter winds and no early morning winter sun. Early morning winter sun tends to heat up the leaves and buds, letting water from them transpire while KNOWLEDGE the roots are in the TO GROW frozen soil and unable to supply moisture to the Karen Weiland plant. This leads to desiccation and the browning of the leaves and death of the flower buds. Plant them where they will receive

dappled sun during the summer. It is recommended that a soil test be done before preparing the soil for planting. Soils with a pH below 7.0 are considered acidic, 7.0 is neutral and values greater than 7.0 are alkaline. Generally azaleas and rhododendrons like a soil pH of 4.5 to 5.5. You may like to devote and develop a garden area solely for growing plants that require or do best in this type of soil. To create acidic conditions, mix Canadian peat, soil and sand together very well in your desired garden area. If further acidity is required, incorporate powdered sulfur at a rate of .8 to 2.4 pounds per 100 square feet to lower it by one unit. Once the correct pH has been established, it would be good to use an acid-forming type fertilizer to keep the pH in the right range. Acidic fertilizers
include ammonium sulfate and ammonium nitrate. Follow label directions when applying so as not to burn the plant by applying too much. Check soil acidity every three years as alkaline water supplies can cause the soil to be less acidic. Providing the correct soil acidity level promotes efficient nutrient uptake by the plant. Nutrient deficiencies caused by alkaline soils will appear as yellowing of the leaves. Azaleas and rhododendrons also like cool roots. A 2 to 3 inch layer of mulch such as pine needles, peat moss or oak leaves will keep the roots cool and add to the acidity of the soil as they decompose. HERS is money in your pocket Q. I viewed a new home with a HERS rating. What is it? Janet, Angola A. I, too have had this problem, Janet. Initially, I thought it was a way for women to assess the cleanliness of a bathroom; boy, was I wrong. Obviously a HIS rating was defined in the Bo Derek film “10.” Imagine my surprise when I SQUARE discovered that it had to do with a CORNERS well-known energy conservation Fred Kreigh program promoted by the Department of Energy and the utility companies. HERS stands for Home Energy Rating System, an all-inclusive energy rating system to determine

the relative efficiency of your home’s energy usage. All facets of your home’s energy usage and retention are calculated and compiled into a number between zero and 150. A rating of 150 means you are living in a barn. Zero would indicate you are an Amish Eskimo living off grid in an unplugged deep freezer. A typical new home following the newly established guidelines in the Indiana building codes energy section would rate 100. A good builder paying close attention to the details, with knowledge of energy conservation, could achieve a rating in the 40-50s. Windows and doors, since even the best are relatively lousy insulators, along with reducing the escape of conditioned air play an important role in the rating system. The rating is an excellent way to determine the total energy usage of
your home and thereby your utility bills. Since the price of energy will never get cheaper — and your boss is sure to — a HERS rating translates to money in your pocket. There are many educational opportunities to bring your building or remodeling contractor up to speed in the rapidly changing world of energy conservation. When you look for someone to do your next building project, check and see if your contractor is a Certified Green Professional of the National Association of Home Builders, or possibly involved in a LEEDS certification program, an Energy Star educated builder, or a psychic reader of energy consumption. Chimney care: Call a sweep annually for inspection THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
People are drawn to a fire, whether they’re roasting marshmallows around a campfire during the summer or cuddling up near the fireplace in the dead of winter. And just as you take precautions outdoors, there are things you should do to make sure your fireplaces and chimneys are safe. Fires built in fireplaces or wood stoves leave a gummy residue, called creosote, that can stick to the lining of your chimney. Creosote — created by soot, smoke, gases and other particles — is flammable, and can be the source of a dangerous chimney fire. Between 2005 and 2008, an average 26,900 fires annually were blamed on fireplaces, chimneys or chimney connectors, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Experts recommend that chimneys be inspected every year by a certified chimney sweep and cleaned if necessary. The cost can range from $100 to $300 or higher. Cleaning a chimney is not a do-ityourself project, says Kit Selzer, a senior editor at Better Homes and Gardens. It’s a dirty job, and it also can be risky, especially if you have to climb onto the roof. Chimney sweeps are trained to determine whether chimneys are structurally sound and whether they need to be cleaned, said Ashley Eldridge, education director for the Chimney Safety Institute of America. They also will make sure the chimney is up to code, especially important in older houses. Selzer recommends that homeowners use the institute’s website, www.csia.org , to select a certified chimney sweep. To become certified, a sweep must pass two tests: one on the inspection process and tools, and the other on the international residential code, as it applies to chimneys, Eldridge said. “Each job is different,” said Christina

El-Hage, a certified sweep with Pride Clean Chimney Sweeps in Bethesda, Md., but there are some basics. “We’re looking to make sure the flue is fully safe,” she said. “We’re making sure there are no third-degree burns of creosote on the lining.” Chimney sweeps also check to see if there are any birds or animals in the chimney, or anything that would block the flow of smoke. They also check that there’s no water coming in. Cleaning the chimney involves removing creosote. When thinking of chimneys, El-Hage says, many people focus on the one attached to the fireplace. “Yes, they can catch on fire, but we’re not dealing with a deadly gas, carbon monoxide,” she says, as is the case with chimneys leading from furnaces. Whether they burn oil or gas, furnaces vent carbon monoxide outside into the atmosphere, and those chimneys, too, need to be inspected. “It’s the No. 1 reason why we are in business,” El-Hage said. You can choose to use a fireplace, she said, but “you have
to use your heat.” There are steps you can take at home to reduce creosote buildup and the risk of a chimney fire. Foremost is picking dry wood to burn, Eldridge said. To determine whether wood is sufficiently dry, “take two pieces and bang them together. You get almost a ring as an indication its ready. If not, it’s a dull thud,” he said. Dry wood also will appear gray on the surface and have cracks on the end. Don’t throw pizza boxes or other trash in the fireplace, El-Hage said, because it causes a thicker smoke, which lowers the temperature in the chimney. “The hotter the fire, the better the burn,” she said. While many people use a newspaper to start a fire, she recommends a fire log or fire starter instead. And to reduce the risk of a spark flying out of the fireplace, use a screen and stay in the room while the fire is burning. “The last thing you want to do is build a big old fire and leave the room,” Eldridge said. Also needed: a smoke detector, carbon monoxide detector and fire extinguisher.

Purslane: It’s back with a vengeance We finally got our much needed rain and purslane is here with a vengeance. Once again we are pulling and hoeing and spraying purslane to keep it from totally invading our gardens. It is very persistent and seems to be back within 24 hours. Common purslane is a weedy summer annual that KNOWLEDGE is abundant TO GROW throughout the world and is considered to be the eighth Gail Daniels most common and ninth most unwanted plant. It invades gardens, vegetable crop production areas, lawns, orchards and many other areas. It loves warm, moist conditions. Purslane is actually edible and is supposed to be a very good salad plant. It has been

cultivated in Europe since the Middle Ages. In some areas of the U.S. perslane is a minor crop because of its use in ethnic cooking. Common purslane often forms a dense mat. The reddish to fleshcolored stems branch from the center like spokes in a wheel up to about 12 inches long. The leaves are generally opposite, but can occur alternately along the stem. The flowers are yellow, about 3/8 inch with five petals and generally open only when it’s sunny. Purslane is a very heavy seeder. In late summer, if you turn over the flat mats of mature purslane, you will find thousands of seeds on the soil surface. Purslane germinates when the soil temperature reaches about 60 degrees F. It germinates very near to or at the soil surface in large number after and irrigation or rain. The fleshy stems can stay moist for several days after cultivation and hoeing and root again to form new plants especially after a
rain. Because of its ability to produce large numbers of seeds, it can rapidly multiply. A few scattered plants in the first year can become an almost solid carpet of purslane the next year. Prevention is the best form of control for common purslane since once it gets established, it is very difficult to control and eliminate. Check often, especially after a rain for purslane seedlings and hoe or pull while they are still small. It’s very important to remove purslane debris from the area and make sure they get no sunlight. If your mulch screens out all light, it can be used to control common purslane. Mulch should be at least 3 inches thick. You can also use synthetic mulches. If they screen out light and give a barrier to seedling development, they work well. GAIL DANIELS has been a Master Gardener since 1999.
Surviving drought during a water restriction METRO CREATIVE Homeowners don’t need to have a green thumb to know how taxing a drought can be on their lawns. Though summer is a laid-back season for many people, those same high temperatures and sunny days that make summer so enjoyable can wreak havoc on a lawn during periods of drought. In response to drought, many communities institute water restrictions that limit how much water a homeowner can use to water his or her lawn. These restrictions are well-intentioned and necessary, but lawns that need water still need to survive the summer heat. There are a few steps homeowners can take to help their lawn survive drought during a water restriction or if they simply want to cut down on water usage. • Extend intervals between cuts. Mowing the lawn is necessary, but whenever a lawn is mowed the grass is stressed. Since grass is already stressed during a drought, try to extend the periods between cuts as long as possible. If a landscaping service tends to your lawn, negotiate with the foreman or another
company representative so the maintenance crew knows not cut the lawn on its regular, nondrought schedule. • Help the lawn help itself. A lawn can actually help shield itself from drought, especially if homeowners are on board. When mowing, raise the decks of the mower so the grass can adequately shade itself from the blistering summer sun. Raising the decks also allows the lawn to maintain more water, which will be lost to evaporation if the lawn is cut too short. • Aerate. The height of drought season is not necessarily the best time to aerate, so the correct aeration schedule might be a preventive measure homeowners can take to help their lawn better cope with drought. Cool season lawns, which includes bluegrass, bent grass, fescues and rye grasses, grow best when temperatures are between 60 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit and might struggle mightily when the weather is especially hot and dry. August through early October is the best time to aerate cool season lawns. Warm season lawns include Bermuda grass, Zoysia grass, Buffalo grass and Saint
Augustine grass, and these species grow best when the temperatures rise into the 80s and mid-90s. Late spring or early summer is the best time to aerate warm season lawns. So why aerate? Because aerating the lawn helps break up hard, compacted soil, allowing water, air and nutrients, each of which are essential to a healthy lawn, to reach the soil and strengthen the roots. Strong roots are essential for the lawn to survive, be it hot and dry temperatures in the summer or colder weather in the winter. • Buy a mulching mower. If you don’t already have one, purchase a mulching mower and employ the mulching feature during hot and dry periods. Remove the bag from your mower so the clippings are left on the lawn, where they will break down and provide the lawn nutrients it desperately needs. Droughts are typically a lawn enthusiast’s worst nightmare. But even if water restrictions have been put in place, employing a few simple strategies can help a lawn survive extended periods of high temperatures and dry conditions.

Late-summer veggies can fill garden’s vacant spots THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Mid- to late summer is prime time for gardeners - a last chance to grow a second batch of fresh vegetables before the plant-killing frosts arrive. Add a few protective enclosures, such as cold frames, overhead sheets and hoops, and the harvest can be extended until Thanksgiving and beyond. “The goal is to have fully grown, ready-to-pick plants that basically store themselves in the garden throughout the fall, so you can pick them as you need them over a long, sustained garden season,” said Renee Shepherd, founder of Renee’s Garden Seeds in Felton, Calif. You can plant many of the coolweather crops from seed if you time it properly, she said. That means choosing fast-maturing varieties that can develop ahead of the average date for the first hard frost. “Row covers for plant protection can always help extend the season when cold weather comes early, but if you plan and plant at the proper time, your fall harvests still will be abundant,” Shepherd said. Think ahead though, because many neighborhood nurseries close or have picked-over inventories after the rush for spring supplies has ended. “Some of the specialty garden centers and nurseries bring in extra plants for the fall, but you may have to purchase from another source and that takes some planning,” said David Hillock, an extension consumer horticulturist with Oklahoma State University. Before planting a second crop, turn the soil and refresh it. Fertilize to restore nutrients lost to the spring varieties. And be sure to water. The ground is hot in August, and new plants must get plenty of water, especially while getting started. “Anything you can do to help conserve soil moisture should be done,” said Rosie Lerner, a consumer horticulturist with Purdue University Cooperative Extension. “Organic mulches cool the soil and decrease the need for moisture, a big plus when starting over in the summertime.” There may be some overlap between

spring and fall gardens. “Some beans and tomatoes might remain, perhaps — things that will ripen in cooler weather,” Hillock said. “But the typical fall garden crops tend to be more frost-tolerant.” Tender plants that usually stop growing or die after being nipped by frost include celery, eggplant, lima beans, cucumbers and summer squash. Second-season crops capable of shrugging off several fall frosts — especially if covered by inexpensive plastic “tents” and warmed with light bulbs — include broccoli, cabbage, lettuce, kale, spinach and turnips. “Here in Oklahoma, we have people harvesting tomatoes well into December if they have them covered,” Hillock said. Fall vegetable garden This year it is particularly important to have a fall vegetable garden because of the predicted higher grocery prices. Our critical drought and extremely hot weather has severely damaged the corn and other crops. One way to reduce the grocery bill and eat highly nutritious food is to grow a fall garden. Late July through mid-August KNOWLEDGE are suggested planting dates for TO GROW cool season seeds. Around Oct. 15 is the average first frost. Gail Daniels Cauliflower, Brussels sprouts and broccoli have the best flavor when they mature in the late fall. Cabbage, mustard, onions, radishes, spinach and turnips are considered hardy vegetables and late hard frost.

Beets, carrots, lettuce, potatoes, parsnips, and cauliflower are all semihardy and tolerate light frost. A great benefit of fall gardens is they require less time and labor because the soil was already worked up in the spring and weed growth is, hopefully, slowing. You do need to remove all weed growth and rototill or spade your fall garden at least 6-8 inches deep. You can apply a fertilizer such as 12-12-12 and thoroughly mix with the soil. Apply about 1-2 pounds per 100 square feet. As always, plant seeds as directed on seed package and water thoroughly. You need to watch your fall garden for moisture content and not let seedlings dry out. Water about 1 inch one time each week. Young seedlings may need to be watered more often during the first week so. Keep in mind that crop rotation is important in controlling certain diseases. Many disease organisms only attack plants in the same family. You can
sometimes avoid disease problems by not planting the same kind of vegetable in the same location. The recommendation is not to plant vegetables in each of the following groups in the same location more than once every three years. CABBAGE FAMILY â&#x20AC;&#x201C; broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, Chinese cabbage, kohlrabi, mustard, radish, rutabaga, and turnip. CUCUMBER FAMILY â&#x20AC;&#x201C; cucumber, gourd, muskmelon, pumpkin, squash, and watermelon. TOMATO FAMILY- eggplant, pepper, potato, and tomato.
