Garlic should be planted soon Garlic, a member of the onion family, has been grown for thousands of years to be used as a food, a spice and a medicine. Garlic yields two useful crops: the bulb itself and the delicious green “scape.” There are two varieties, softneck and hardneck (also known as topset). Hardneck varieties produce a flower stalk called a scape and usually produce fewer, larger cloves than the softneck varieties which do not produce a flower stalk. Softneck varieties are KNOWLEDGE generally considered TO GROW more productive than the hardneck varieties in that all their energy Karen Weiland goes into producing a bulb rather than a bulb and a flower stalk. Garlic seed requires a cold treatment for the best shoot and bulb development and therefore it is recommended that it be planted in October.

It can be planted in the spring but it needs to be done very early. If planted in the fall the seed needs enough time to grow roots and a little shoot, but not so much that the shoot is visible above the soil line, by the first hard freeze. The individual cloves from the garlic bulbs are separated and planted, pointed end up, about 3 inches deep and 6 inches apart, either in beds or rows. Planting the garlic purchased in supermarkets is not recommended as that particular variety may not be well adapted for growing in our climate zone. It is best to obtain disease free seed garlic from a seed supplier. Garlic likes to grow in cool temperatures and in fertile, well drained soil. Garlic has a shallow root system and is therefore in competition with whatever weeds seeds sprout and try to take over. Timely, shallow cultivation is a must. Mulching with weed free straw after planting will help protect the seed during the winter months and conserve moisture and control weed emergence during the growing season. You may like to remove the mulch in the
spring to allow the soil to warm faster, then replace the mulch when the shoots are about 6 inches tall to control the weeds. You can tell when garlic is ready to harvest when the lower leaves start to turn brown or by digging a bulb up and checking to see if the cloves have filled the skins. When ready, the bulbs should be dug with the roots and shoots still attached. Set them aside in a well ventilated building to cure for about 3 to 4 weeks. After the shoots and roots have dried down, the shoots should be cut back to about 1 inch above the bulb and the roots should be trimmed close to the base. As always, happy gardening. Furnace needs room to breathe Q. I want to build a wall in my basement to enclose the mechanicals. Any advice? Sam, Avilla A. Sam, the fact that you are thinking before doing proves that you are astute; misguided since you ask me for advice, but astute. Let’s start with the assumption that you have a gas furnace, a gas water heater, an electrical panel and a water SQUARE softener that you CORNERS wish to enclose. Code will require that you provide Fred Kreigh space in front of these appliances for folks trying to work on them. Allow three feet in front of the furnace and electrical

panel. There is no required or suggested workspace around the water heater and softener. However if your plumber is a fat guy (and Indiana is topping the chart in population obesity), you might want to leave the same kind of access around these items as well. It will prove to be expensive enough to replace a failed water heater; don’t add to the misery by making it hard to get at. The door to your new mechanical room would be best at 36 inches. Anyone bigger than that shouldn’t be in there and anything in there will easily fit out through that opening. If you want to isolate the sound your equipment is making, definitely insulate the wall. Now we need to talk combustion air. Your furnace creates hot air, kind of like having your own personal politician in the basement all winter long. When the furnace runs, or the
water heater for that matter, they use air out of the house for the oxygen required to fire the appliance. The burning of the gas creates carbon monoxide that is vented to the outside through the flue pipe. If the area these appliances draw air from is too small, back drafting can occur. That’s good in NASCAR but a terrible hazard to the home’s inhabitants when it’s flue gas. Your HVAC contractor can show you how to provide adequate makeup air to your mechanical room. So let’s review: adequate space to work on stuff, insulate for sound, three foot door, skinny plumber, combustion air. And get a pool table — it looks great in a basement. Collecting and storing seeds Collecting and sowing your own seeds can be a fun and gratifying experience. At first the details may seem a little overwhelming, but as you gain experience and your new seedlings appear, you may start watching your flowers closely for more seeds you can collect from your flowers. KNOWLEDGE Growing informaTO GROW tion you normally get on the seed packets, you can find in books Gail Daniels or websites. The first step is to choose healthy seed pods and fruits for seed collection. Healthy plants show vigorous growth, resistance to pests and diseases, produce good quality fruit and high yields. As the plants you

have chosen finish flowering, check for swelling seedpods or ripening fruit — wait until it is fully mature. If picked too early, the embryo will not survive the drying out process. If picked too late, the wind may blow away the seed. Fine, nylon-mesh bags work well for collecting seeds. Paper bags also work well for seeds. Cloth bags for dry fruit, and open baskets for fleshy fruit. Be sure not to squash the fruit. Do not let the seeds become hot or moldy. When the seed pods are dry, remove the ripe seeds by hanging them upside down over a paper bag in a shaded, dry, airy place and wait for the seeds to fall. An occasional gentle tap will help. Cut clustered seed heads, such as those of marigolds, whole and lay on a newspaper to dry. Whenever you harvest your own seed, remove as much of the chaff and other vegetable material as possible before storing. This material if sown along with the seed tends to rot
and may encourage fungal diseases. For most fruit such as ripe tomato or cucumber, the seed is surrounded by mucilage. When the fruit is fully colored and ripe, scoop out these seeds and wash them in a sive under running water to remove mucilage and let dry in the shade. Only clean and well-dried seed should be stored. Two deadly enemies of stored seed are warmth and moisture. You need to inspect the seed one last time and put them in clean, air tight containers or small paper bags in the bottom drawer of your refrigerator. Beyond pumpkins: Orange hues are hot indoors, too THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Leaves are changing and pumpkins are appearing on doorsteps around the country. As vibrant shades of orange fill the outdoors, they’re also becoming increasingly popular inside. Upholstery fabrics, paint colors, furniture and accessories that range from neon orange to tangerine to terra cotta are getting attention this season. But orange isn’t for everyone. When interior designers suggest decorating with orange, clients can get nervous. Designer Kyle Schuneman often eases homeowners into using orange by suggesting variations on it. “The idea of orange can sound juvenile and unsophisticated,” Schuneman says. “But if you go with umbers, burnt bricks or terra cottas, you can sell a client on the idea much easier.” The key, he says, is using orange creatively and carefully. Here, Schuneman and designers Brian Patrick Flynn and Betsy Burnham offer tips on decorating with the color orange, and avoiding the pitfalls of using it badly.
How much to use? Orange can be overpowering as the main color in a room. But, like red, it works brilliantly as an accent color. “I don’t suggest painting your walls orange,” Burnham says. “But maybe there’s an orange in the print on your pillows.” It can be casual (“maybe you bring in a garden stool that’s bright orange”), or chic and sophisticated (“think of Hermes orange, those shopping boxes”), she says. In a bedroom with muted, gray-blue walls, Burnham opted to add lacquered end tables in a rich shade of orange. Orange paint can also be a great way to spruce up a dated piece of furniture. “Think about painting a great old chest of drawers a beautiful shade in a high gloss,” Schuneman says, “and changing out the knobs to really special crystal knobs to make a statement piece in a room.”
Which shades are best? All three designers like earthy burnt orange tones that are almost as brown as they are orange. “With a burnt orange, you’d be
surprised what the paint chip looks like,” Burnham says. “It looks more like a brown. But you paint a piece of furniture that color, and it reads orange. It does what it’s supposed to do — it brings some whimsy.” Flynn also likes using red-orange, “ideal for more youthful or edgy rooms.” The style of your home may help determine which shades you choose, says Schuneman. “Terra cotta is a beautiful backdrop for a traditional or retro feeling space, while pops of a more neon orange could be really fun for a modern space.” Whatever tone you choose, Schuneman suggests testing a sample if you’ve decided to take the plunge and paint with orange. “Try three or four different shades,” he says, and view them in various types of daylight and artificial light. Also, he says, “orange is a lot like red when you’re painting, so you’re going to need three or four coats to get an even finish. But the end product will be a beautiful cozy space.” Just one word of warning: “Don’t go with a true shade of orange,” Schuneman says. “It will feel like ‘Pee-Wee’s Playhouse.’”
Where does it work? Orange can look good anywhere in your home, but these designers say it’s especially beautiful for bedrooms. “Orange is my favorite choice for kids’ rooms, because it’s totally gender-neutral,” Flynn says. “My favorite combo for a kids’ space is tangerine and white. It’s clean and classic.” Schuneman agrees: “I love a warm shade of orange for a bedroom.My last bedroom was a burnt brick. It felt so warm and cozy,” he says. “It really works well with dim lighting at night, but also can invigorate you to wake up in the morning.” Burnham is using orange and white gingham print draperies, along with navy blue and dark denim upholstery, to decorate the bedroom of a pre-teen boy. “It’s boyish, but sophisticated,” she says. “Not over-the-top country or anything. Sort of preppy.”
What goes with orange? “I love pairing gray with orange,” Schuneman says. “It immediately amps up the hip factor and brings it into a contem-

porary setting. It works well because gray has a cool base, where orange is warm. So the balance really creates harmony in a room.” Along with pale grays and deep charcoals, orange also goes well with dark and light blues and also browns, taupe, cream or white. Burnham cautions against pairing orange with other tropical colors or other harvest colors, like red and yellow. The room can easily begin to feel as though you’ve taken those themes too far. Rather than piling on all the fall colors at once, Schuneman suggests pairing orange only with brown: “I think you can create a really beautiful monotone room of creams, off whites and browns,” he says, “and pop it with orange to create a cozy feel. Use different textures in these similar color tones … jutes, velvets and linens for that cozy fall feel.”
