Chandeliers can add wow to a room THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Some interior designers tout paint as the best way to change the look of a room. For Lisa Roberts, “It’s lighting. … It’s more bang for the buck.” With the holidays approaching, a new chandelier could be a fun and affordable way to make over the dining room, said Roberts, a Minneapolis designer who organized a chandelier fashion show at the home and garden show in that city earlier this year. Michelle Jennings Wiebe, president of Studio M Interior Design in Tampa, Fla., agreed, saying a dining room should be about more than the table and chairs. “You really need that piece that caps it off and makes it special,” she said. “It’s almost like a piece of artwork.” Chandelier shoppers have plenty of choices these days. Chandeliers come in a variety of styles, and can range in price from a few hundred dollars to tens of thousands. “We have a lot of fun picking them out,” Wiebe said. “It’s a way to make a special impression.” New manufacturing techniques have led to the creation of designs and shapes that previously were not possible, said Joseph Rey-Barreau, an architect and lighting designer and a professor at the University of Kentucky in Lexington. Trends include jewel tones, geometricinspired pieces, retro fixtures and the use of lamp shades, these lighting experts said. Roberts included several colorful chandeliers at her show. She favors deep jewel tones, and showed one piece made out of black cut crystal. A chandelier can add sophistication or whimsy to a home, she said. The decor featured on the television show “Mad Men” has created more interest in Mid-century Modern, said Wiebe, and many of her clients are choosing slim, sleek pieces reminiscent of the 1950s and ’60s. In Florida, shell, coral or other natureinspired lighting also is a common choice, she said. Shannon Cantor so appreciates the seashell-inspired chandelier in her condo in Redington Beach, Fla., that she put a variation of it in her second home, in Tampa. She said she and her husband wanted something they would enjoy looking at every day.

It’s going to be there for a long while.” Rey-Barreau called lamp shades on chandeliers “a very, very fashionable trend,” from lights surrounded by a single, round drum shade (a little like a hanging table lamp) to a group of mini drum shades covering each bulb. Some chandeliers have removable shades, so you can use them or not. When helping clients choose a chandelier, Wiebe considers the size of the room and the style of the home. But she also reminds them that the fixtures have a job to do. “First and foremost it’s for lighting,” she said. For instance, will a table with lighting overhead be used mostly for eating or will children be doing homework there? “You really need to think about what you are going to do with the fixture,” said Rey-
Barreau. He offered these chandelier tips: — Always put chandeliers on a dimmer switch. This makes them more functional and can help set a mood in the dining room. — To determine what size chandelier is needed, add the width of the room to the length of the room in feet, and then convert that number to inches for a chandelier’s diameter. A 10-by-20-foot room, for instance, would require a chandelier with a diameter of about 30 inches. — In a room with 8-foot ceilings, chandeliers are normally hung about 30 inches above the table. For every additional foot of ceiling height, raise the fixture 3 inches. — When shopping for a chandelier ask whether it is part of a “lighting family.” Some manufacturers have developed series of fixtures designed to complement each other. The line may include other options for consideration for other rooms.

Cleaning: Grin and grout work Q. Is there a recommended way to clean grout between glass blocks in a shower and can it be sealed? Becky H. A. Good news, Becky, the only thing that can’t be cleaned is dirt. It’s going to be dirty no matter what you do to it! Grout, whether in tile or glass block, tends to collect SQUARE soap scum and grime since it is recessed and CORNERS more porous than the tile around it. In your Fred Kreigh situation the problem is a bit complex because many grout
cleaners contain acid that will etch the glass block surrounding your grout. The process is the same for cleaning any grout line. Get your husband’s toothbrush and any grout cleaner that does not contain muriatic acid. Wet the surface to be cleaned with water, dip the brush in the cleaner and scrub the grout line. Usually you must allow time for the cleaner to work before rinsing the surface. Once you are satisfied with the results, make sure you put the toothbrush back where you found it. After the surface is thoroughly dry, you can apply grout sealer with a small brush or a commercially available bottle with a roller tip on it. They also make aerosol grout sealers. If you are going to

be sloppy, make sure you are using a water-based grout sealer and wipe it clean with a dry cloth after application. Many sealers will leave a haze on the glass block that when dry is difficult to remove. Grout sealers made with silicone tend to penetrate the surface better, actually chemically bonding in the capillaries of the grout, and tend to last a bit longer. African violets: Indoor flowers for year around beauty Gardeners love to have live plants around them and now that our outdoor growing season is pretty much over, we can concentrate on our indoor plants. African violets, one of America’s favorite houseplants, are very desirable for the indoor gardener. They have beautiful flowers that resemble small bouquets and easily spruce up any decor. They produce spectac- KNOWLEDGE ular blooms all TO GROW throughout the spring, summer and fall months. The brightly Gail Daniels colored velvet-leaved tropical African violets are native plants of the coastal regions of Tanzania. They were brought to this country by a captain in the German Imperial Army in 1892 and became an immediate hit with gardeners. African violets may be forgiving, but are not foolproof so you need a few basic gardening skills to be successful with them. The worst things you can do to African violets are to not provide proper watering and lighting conditions. African violets like room temperature
•
water and do not like to have wet leaves. The soil needs to be moist but take care not to let the soil become soggy. This can cause root rot and serious problems for the plant. Proper lighting is important in getting the plant to produce flowers. African violets love around 12 to 16 hours of light a day. An east facing window usually will provide an adequate supply of light. The professional growers and the seriously addicted use grow lights for best results. If possible, place the pots about 12 inches from the window glass so the sun doesn’t get too hot or too cold. A temperature of 60 to 70 degrees is an ideal range for African violets. Good air circulation is needed for the African violets overall health, but they do not like to be placed in a draft. Humidity is to be encouraged when raising African violets and this can be accomplished by setting the pots in trays filled with gravel and topped off with water. Make sure the plants feet are not sitting in water making the soil become soggy. As the water evaporates, ambient humidity is created, producing an ideal environment for African violets. Your plants need to be fed weekly. A specially formatted fertilizer for African violets available at plant centers in a concentrated liquid. A few drops to a quart
of water is recommended. Follow directions on package. Keep the plants well groomed and check them over for signs of disease and insects. If either is found, they may be treated with an appropriate insecticide or fungicide powder purchased at plant centers. Your African violet will be happy in a four inch or a six-inch pot for quite a while, but can become over crowded. When this happens, repot it in the next size larger pot using a good loose potting soil for good drainage and air circulation. The potting soil can be purchased at plant centers or you can make your own mix. Vermiculite is a good additive to keep the soil loose. Where to store those off-season items THE ASSOCIATED PRESS It’s that time of year again, when we pull out the blankets andsweaters and stash thelast of the warm-weather items until spring arrives. Many homes lack the space needed to store everything right where we use it. So seasonal things get shuttled around and sometimes even misplaced. If the serving dishes you use only at the holidays are stacked way up at the top of your pantry, “you may find yourself running out and buying something you’ve already got, because you can’t remember what you have or you can’t get to it,” says Atlantabased interior designer Mallory Mathison. Many of her clients struggle with insufficient closet space for storing items that are only used for a few months each year. Here, Mathison and interior designers Brian Patrick Flynn and Molly Luetkemeyer offer advice on creativelystoring off-season itemsin ways that maximize every inch of space and make it easy to retrieve what you need.
Find double-duty furniture All three designers love furniture that offers hidden storage. A bench with storage space inside is perfect for boots, and bins containing scarves, gloves and hats. Or add a large coffee table/ottoman combination to your living room: “They’re an easy way to sneak a bit more seasonal storage into a room, without having to add extra closet space or add pricey, big-ticket furniture pieces,” says Flynn, founder of the design website decordemon.com. “You can find a ton of storage-ottoman-coffee tables on websites like overstock.com or hayneedle.com.” For families with pets, Flynn suggests creating a sleeping space for a small dog or cat that doubles as seasonal storage. “To do this, I take a flea-market dresser, usually a highboy with four to six drawers, then remove the bottom two for use as an open lounge space for pets, complete with a removable cushion,” he says. Use the remaining drawers above for seasonal items like off-season clothing.
Maximize under-bed spaces Many people use the space under their master bed for seasonal storage. Luetkemeyer suggests doing the same with every bed in the house.
Tuck clear plastic bins under children’s beds (and a guest bed, if you have one), labeling each one clearly. You can rotate items in and out of these bins during the year — one holding swimsuits all winter might hold sweaters in summer. If you know that all under-bed space is designated for seasonal items, it will be easier to track down the once-a-year items you’re seeking.
Try creative carpentry Mathison suggests having built-in cabinets added along the walls on both sides of your bed. Creating this architectural niche for your bed “is totally cozy, and it also creates great concealed and/or open storage,” she says. Another built-in option: If your kitchen cabinets don’t go all the way to the ceiling, add extra closed storage on top for seasonal serving dishes and table linens. Or have a row of very shallow shelves (no more than 3 or 4 inches deep) added to one wall of your kitchen or pantry. You can prop up dishware or serving pieces you rarely use, creatively storing them while adding some beauty to your walls.
Get hooked “Seasonal things that inspire you should be left out as much as possible,” Flynn says. “I use a ton of wall hooks in my spaces, mostly to be able to hang up favorite pieces of clothing which add decorative flair to a room.” In a bedroom, a cluster of favorite flannel shirts can look great on decorative hooks, and the same goes for winter jackets. In summer, hang your favorite T-shirts or swimsuits on those same hooks while the winter items are put away.
Use closets well Maximize closet space by adding shelves up high if there aren’t any, then keep a small step-ladder in the closet for accessing high items, Luetkemeyer says. Add inexpensive, battery-powered lights to dim closets, and increase shelf space by adding a row of canvas hanging shelves. In a guest room closet, if you have one, Mathison suggests using two rows of hanging canvas shelves — one filled with items your guest may need, such as extra towels and soap, and the other left empty so your guest can put out some of the clothes they brought. Then use the rest of the closet

It will be clear to the guest what space is theirs and what isn’t. If winter items will be hung in a closet, Flynn opts for “thick wooden hangers or sculptural modern aluminum hangers to keep the structural integrity of coats or heavy pants.” For lighter summer items, Luetkemeyer recommends slim, foam-covered hangers that take up less space and won’t let items like camisoles slip off. Consider splurging on rebuilding your closets with exactly the shelving and hanging space you want: “This way, every closet in the house can work for all seasons,” says Flynn. “We spend a ton of money on our cars and have garages built for them, right? Well, we spend just as much on our wardrobes, so why not invest in a space to store that investment?”
