Get out of the gutter and pay up for guards Q. Some of the gutters on my house are 30 feet off the ground. How do I keep leaves out of them? Steve G. of Auburn. A. Steve, ol’ buddy, on Friday nights it’s easy to find gutters a lot closer to the ground SQUARE than 30 feet. Don’t spend time trying CORNERS to over achieve. If you insist on Fred Kreigh doing home maintenance as instructed by your wife, let’s try to keep you off a 30-

foot ladder. Bottom line, as long as there are trees around your house taller than 30 feet you are going to get leaves in your 30-foot-high gutter. You will either need to start a campaign to top all trees at 29 feet or protect those open gutters. There are lots of different styles of gutter guard you can buy for a do it yourself job or call any seamless gutter contractor and he will sell you the farm. These products range in price from $1 to as much as $13 per foot. As is always the case in life — you get what you pay for. If you spend a dollar on a piece of plastic webbing or $14 on the Cadillac of leaf guards — i.e. if you buy
something cheap or something outrageously expensive — you are cheating yourself. Find a product that will allow the heaviest of rainfall to still enter the gutter without running over and allows dried leaves to blow off and you won’t have to get on that ladder. Sanitize garden to prevent diseases next spring As cold temperatures set in, most gardeners are nestled in their warm homes thumbing through gardening magazines and dreaming of next year’s garden. If good sanitation is not done this fall, the nasty things that are left in the garden may come back to wreak havoc next planting season. Pull on the thermals and get your garden cleaned. KNOWLEDGE I am talking about plant diseases, like TO GROW potato late blight, which can threaten crops next year. This Karen Weiland disease overwinters in the live tissue of potato tubers. Infested potatoes left in the soil and covered with snow are protected from the freezing temperatures that would

normally kill it. Make sure all potatoes are dug up. Diseased material should be disposed of but not placed in the compost pile. Compost piles act as insulators during cold weather and throwing diseased material into it will cause contamination. Early next spring check the area for volunteer potato plants and dispose of them. It is recommended to buy clean, certified seed potatoes, rather than planting potatoes saved for seed. Late blight is spread through the air and from plant to plant under favorable weather conditions. It can affect tomato plants and the same sanitation rules apply — clean it up to prevent problems. Clean up any dropped tomatoes. Not only are they a potential harbor for disease but if left in the garden, all those little tomato seeds will sprout next spring causing you to have to pull them all out. Another thing to keep in mind is the possibility of disease carry-over from garden to garden. Let’s say you lend a
helping hand in Madge’s garden for the afternoon and you use some of your own garden tools. Soil borne diseases can be transferred between gardens if contaminated soil is left on your tools. As a preventative measure clean your tools as you use them. When trimming your woody plants clean your loppers and pruners with isopropyl alcohol after every use to prevent the transfer of pathogens from a sick plant to a healthy one. Preventing a disease before it becomes a problem is easier that trying to get rid of it. As always, happy gardening. Store potatoes, onions in cool, dark places More of us are growing our own fruits and vegetables and with that comes “what do we do with all this bounty?” Also, you can buy fruits and vegetables in season and store them much more reasonably than buying out of season. Home storage is a good and inexpensive way to keep many vegetables. When stored properly, fresh vegetables keep much of their value and flavor. KNOWLEDGE First and foremost, store only good TO GROW quality, mature vegetables. In most cases and especially for root Gail Daniels vegetables which can take a light frost, delay harvesting. Handle with care to avoid cuts and bruises. ONIONS: Make sure tops are completely dry, then cut the tops off 1 inch from the bulbs. Cure bulbs for another week or two in a dry well-ventilated location before putting in storage. Onions do best in mesh bags or slatted crates. Store in a cool,

moderately dry, well-ventilated room away from bright light and where, ideally, the temperature can be kept near 32 degrees F such as an attic or unheated room When we’re out of the 8 degree temps, put onions in well ventilated containers such as mesh bags or slatted crates. Fill the bags half full and hang them on overhead hooks if possible. Fill the crates half full and stack them on crossbars for good air circulation. Ideal conditions for storage are 32 degrees F with relative humidity of 70-75 percent. Onions should keep at least 2 to 4 months in home storage. POTATOES: Even stored under the best conditions, potatoes lose some quality the longer they are stored. It’s not a good idea to store potatoes in the refrigerator. Cold temperatures convert starch to sugar giving potatoes a sweet taste. The sugar caramelizes during cooking sometimes turning the potatoes brown and an giving them an off flavor. For storage of late potatoes, harvest after potato vines have died. Handle as gently as possible. Potatoes can be harvested at any stage of developments. Because the tubers develop 4 to 6 inches deep, you can use a shovel or spading fork for digging potatoes. Potatoes
should be firm, free of soft spots, and free of disease for storage. Cure potatoes in a dark place at 45-60 degrees F for 10-15 days, brush off the soil, then move to your storage area. If storage area temperature is too high, your potatoes may tend to soften and sprout. Store in barrels or crates and store in the dark to prevent greening. Layer sheets of newspaper so if one potato spoils, it will not spread to the entire container. Average storage life is generally 5-8 months. Maximize seating for entertaining THE ASSOCIATED PRESS The joy of home entertaining at the holidays often comes with a challenge: How do you provide enough seating for a roomful of holiday revelers with just a sofa and a few chairs? Are there creative options besides resorting to folding chairs? Los Angeles-based interior designer Betsy Burnham frequently hears from clients who want help solving this puzzle. Here, Burnham and designers Brian Patrick Flynn and Kyle Schuneman offer advice on maximizing seating without sacrificing style.
Stealth seating “I’m a big fan of vintage ottomans, stools and sturdy side tables like stumps for this exact purpose,” says Schuneman, author of “The First Apartment Book: Cool Design for Small Spaces” (Clarkson Potter, 2012). These pieces can work as tables or storage surfaces, he says, then occasionally serve “as extra seating for game nights or casual gatherings around the coffee table.” Benches can work the same way. Schuneman suggests buying two benches that coordinate nicely with the decor of your living room, and then placing them at the foot of beds in your home. When extra seating is needed, “you can easily pull them out for the holidays and bigger dinners,” he says. “And you have a cohesive looking space, as opposed to a bunch of stuff you just pulled from around the garage.” Flynn, founder and editor of decordemon.com, uses ottomans in a similar way. “What I often do is use an upholstered or hardy wood storage ottoman on casters instead of a coffee table in the sofa area,” he says. “Inside the storage ottoman, I keep floor cushions. When it’s time for guests, the ottoman can be wheeled just about anywhere as extra seating, and the floor cushions allow guests to lounge.”
Chairs from elsewhere Flynn often uses a mixture of different chairs and benches at a dining room table year-round, rather than a matching set. The look is stylish, and when chairs need to be brought into a living room for a party, they don’t necessarily look like they’re been taken from the dining room set. The mix can include “a three-seater bench, squatty stools, armless chairs, six chairs and a pair of wingbacks at each end,” he says. Another option he suggests: “Bring in your outdoor seating and deliberately mix it in with the indoor pieces. The juxtaposition can be nice, plus you can coordinate them

The right sofa Pay attention to size and depth when choosing a sofa, Burnham says. “A standard-size sofa is 7 feet. If you have three seat cushions, people sit in a pristine way in their cushion,” she says, and you’ll be limited to a maximum of three guests on your sofa. She prefers “sofas that have bench seams, so that it’s one big seat,” making it more likely that four guests might use the space. Longer sofas offer additional seating, but Flynn says they’re best used in what he calls a “floating space plan,” where two identical long sofas are placed across from one another in the center of a room, rather than having one sofa against a wall. They need to be “balanced with an extra-long coffee table,” he says. Sofas with deep cushions are another option, but Flynn points out that “extra-deep sofas are very tricky. They are insanely comfortable, but can be a space planning disaster. I only use them in super large or grand living rooms. … You’ve got to ensure
the tables and chairs which surround it have the same visual weight.” Schuneman agrees: “I think you definitely want to mix it up with different patterns and textures of throw pillows, so it doesn’t become a big blob in the room.” If you have extra space after choosing your sofa, Burnham suggests focusing on adding chairs to your living room rather than a loveseat. Although loveseats seem to offer more seating than chairs, they are often occupied by just one person. “A loveseat’s a tough one,” she says, “because I don’t think people want to be super physically close” at parties.
Folding and stacking “Folding chairs are often eyesores,” Flynn says, so he prefers chairs that can be stacked when not in use. “My favorite stacking chair is the Emeco Navy chair. It’s super light, maybe 7 pounds or so, and it’s classic in design. When not in use, stack them seven high in a closet and you’ll never know they’re there.” Burnham and Schuneman have each found a few types of stylish folding chairs, but they tend to come with higher price tags. She favors black bamboo folding chairs from Ballard Designs (about $100) for rooms with a more traditional style, and has used clear Lucite folding chairs (“kind of like the Philippe Starck ghost chairs”) in more modern living rooms.

Now is not the time of year for sowing, unless it’s sowing an idea: As the weather turns colder and the landscape becomes washed in grays and browns, imagine a retreat, an oasis of lush greenery and brightly colored flowers suffused in warm, moist air.
Greenhouses run gamut Home or “hobby” greenhouses run the gamut from lavish, Victorian-style conservatories to primitive structures cobbled together from discarded window frames. Each creates its own oasis. Even my coldframe — nothing more than a large wooden box with a clear plastic cover — hints of the tropics each time its cover is opened. For most of us, the greenhouse of our dreams would be a spacious conservatory, cozy for its abundance of lush, tropical greenery, with enough space among the 6-foot-long banana leaves and fragrant citrus blossoms to accommodate a small dining table and chairs. But let’s float back down to reality. That greenhouse is beyond many a gardener’s budget, and it’s hard in these environmentally aware times to justify heating a space enough to keep tropical plants happy in winter. Fuel needs rise dramatically with each degree you ratchet up greenhouse temperature. Then again, newer greenhouse coverings, coupled with innovative methods of storing excess heat generated on sunny days, can go a long way to dampening heat losses. Before letting your imagination run away with you though, consider whether you’d prefer your greenhouse to be freestanding or attached to your home. A freestanding structure offers the most flexibility in design and siting, and is bathed in light from all four sides. Also, there’s no need to integrate it with house design, or for it to look anything

prettier than just functional. An attached greenhouse requires more attention to style but it does have some advantages. Cozied up against your home, an attached greenhouse loses less heat. It can tap the heat-storing capacity of the home’s wall where it is attached, especially if that wall is masonry, and can even tap into the home’s heating system. On sunny winter days, excess heat generated in the greenhouse can be vented into your home. That moist heat is a lot more comfortable than the dry heat of home heating systems, although some caution is needed against venting
too much moisture into your home. And getting back to that table and chairs that might be squeezed into your greenhouse: How likely are you to trudge across the snow with brunch to your freestanding greenhouse? If you have a wall facing in a direction that gets enough light for the plants you want to grow, the attached greenhouse is the one most likely to provide living space as well as functional space. Deciding on the greenhouse’s size and what plants it will house also can help determine heating needs. No need to get into other details just yet. Let your imagination roam.

As wallpaper evolves, old patterns retain appeal With today’s interest in vintage interior design concepts, wallpaper featuring old style imagery is making a huge comeback. Wallpaper has developed as a decorative art form which is easily changed as the styles change. Many of us are interested in sprucing up the place ART & around the holidays so installing new or even ANTIQUES old wallpaper can be a fun redecorating Dr. Lori project. Dating as far back as the early days of decorative papyrus paper making in ancient Egypt, wallpaper has evolved over time. The Chinese first glued rice paper to walls around 200 BC. By the 12th century, wallpaper had spread throughout Europe. Some believe that wallpaper’s imitative character — trying to look like something it is not such as a fine textile like chintz, tapestry, or velvet — makes the use of wallpaper a cheap option. Others embrace wallpaper’s easy and transitional quality. Many folks enjoy the fact that wallpaper can bring a desired look or new feel to a room at little expense. Some of the most popular wallpapers have been decorated with repeated images like the wallpaper produced in 1481 for King Louis XI of France featuring angels on a blue background. The engraver JeanMichel Papillon invented wallpaper as we know it using block designs in a continuous pattern in 1675, but it would take another 100 years for the wallpaper printing machine to be introduced. Wallpaper was introduced to Americans by a Philadelphia printer in the late 1730s. By the end of the 1770s, wallpaper print workshops were established in the original 13 colonies.

Patriotic wallpapers were popular in the late 1700s as were those with repeated images of fruit and flowers for dining rooms and living room walls. The installation of wallpaper changed significantly and so did design tastes in the late 1880s. The first ready-to-use wallpaper paste would come onto the scene in 1888. Design innovations of the Art Nouveau period produced wallpapers featuring organic forms from nature, scroll work and embellishments sparked by the aesthetic ideas of art innovators Louis Comfort Tiffany and William Morris. By the early decades of the 1900s, the golden age of wallpaper was in full swing and as many as 400 million rolls of the printed decorative papers were sold worldwide. During this era, high class wallpapers typically feature exotic locales, lush green landscape vistas and images of social events like polo matches and hunting scenes. In fact, animals of all kinds were among the most popular features on wallpapers of the early 20th century. Dogs, cats, rabbits, and fish made wallpaper imagery all the rage. In the mid 1900s, wallpaper was popular with young American families setting up housekeeping in new Levittown homes after World War II. Printed and playful images on wallpaper would provide an inexpensive and long wearing interior design solution. New materials of the day, including plastics and resins, changed the wallpaper industry as midcentury modern wallpapers boasted durability and strength. However, in the market today, collectors have been known to feature even small pieces of antique and vintage wallpaper as framed works of art. Full rolls of wallpaper dating back to the 1800s rarely come onto the collectibles market yet there have been some wallpapers sold on the antiques market dating back to the Victorian era and to the

Roaring 20s (that is, the golden age of wallpaper). It is rare for large pieces of antique wallpaper to come to market so large supplies of old wallpaper command high prices for their rarity when sold at auction or online. Recent advances in digital printing techniques have allowed the replication of historic images and the production of decorative papers. Large scale vinyl cutout decals and silhouette images are adhered to walls along with life size fullcolor photographs of football and baseball players. These new images have ushered in a new generation of wallpapers. DR.
