Stand-up paddleboarding a new popular sport BY CHAD KLINE ckline@kpcnews.net

SKINNER LAKE — They may look like they are walking on water. It’s a new sport that has started to pop up in the area that combines aspects of surfing, canoeing and kayaking. The sport is stand-up paddleboarding, and it’s gaining popularity in the area. “It’s one of the fastest growing board sports in the water industry, according to Zach Lear, director of marketing for Dry Dock Marine Center in Angola. “It has made getting on a surf board on flat water accessible, according to Cory Sargent of Columbia City. Sargent has been boarding for more than 5 years. Stand-up paddleboarding, called SUP for short, involves the rider standing upright on a long board. The board is similar to a surfboard, but is thicker and more buoyant. Paddleboarders use a paddle

to propel themselves across the water. “It’s a very easily accessible way to get into the water. All you need is a board and a paddle, Sargent said. Once on the water, the board is extremely stable and easy to control. Average prices for the boards and paddle range from $900 to $2,000. “A lot of older people think that they’re not stable and are going to fall and get hurt, but if you fall you don’t get hurt, you just fall in the water and it’s easy to get back on, said Cara Hall with Fort Wayne Outfitters. Fort Wayne Outfitters has demo days every week throughout the summer and offers free lessons. For those looking for a good workout, stand-up paddleboarding works the thighs, calves and arms. “It’s a good core workout, said Lear. See PADDLEBOARDING page 3

It’s a great way to “build strength in lower back, arms and abdominal areas. When on the water, “it can be a calm relaxing paddle or you can get a really good workout, Hall said. Sargent also enjoys SUP because of the “fun and health aspects of it. Yoga on paddleboards is also beginning to gain popularity. Yoga on the water expands on the concept, because it requires more focus on balance and posture. “I love yoga. It’s a different challenge and to be outdoors and combine the water with yoga, is my ultimate dream, said Hall. Fort Wayne Outfitters is also looking to add paddleboard yoga classes. SUP is a sport that the entire family can become involved in. “A lot of families with teenagers are getting them because it’s something that everyone thinks is cool. Everybody can do it, said Hall. involved in SUP because “it looked fun and really cool. Steinhoff and Sargent have traveled to Lake Michigan, Hatteras Island in North Carolina and Florida to SUP. Hall said her family also takes their boards and paddles to Florida and Michigan and all of their vacations. “They are easy to transport around, she said. “It’s something you can include the kids and bring them along.

New law changing BUI law BY MIKE MARTURELLO mikem@kpcnews.net

INDIANAPOLIS — Legislation that goes into effect July 1 will match penalties covering the operation of a motorboat while intoxicated to those of current Indiana law regarding driving while intoxicated. The new law also covers operating while impaired by drugs. “The new law will allow enforcement action for BWI while under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs,” Steuben County Sheriff Tim Troyer said. “Simply put, this bill will bring the offense of a BUI (boating while intoxicated) to conform with the current process for a DUI (driving under the influence),” said Rep. Peggy Welch, D-Bloomington, a cosponsor of the bill. “The bill will unify the process of convicting a person who has violated Indiana’s BUI law.” The law will make all BUI offenses a Class C misdemeanor. Punishment can include 60 days in local jail, fines and varying degrees of license suspension, based on the individual’s record.

“What the new law will do is make the consequences of boating while intoxicated equal to those of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated,” said Patrick Heidenreich, public information officer with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Division of Law Enforcement for District 2, which covers northeast Indiana. “Before, if you were convicted of boating while intoxicated, your boating privilleges could be suspended, but this had no effect on your ability to operate a motor vehicle. As of July 1, a BWI will affect your driver’s license and potentially your ability to operate a motor vehicle.” The bill also creates more harsh penalties for repeat offenders. Penalties will also be increased if the accident involves serious bodily injury or death. “Very few people realize the seriousness of the issue,” said Welch. The law dictates that a BUI will now be registered under a criminal code instead of the existing natural resources code.

Adirondack art on display in downtown Auburn BY KATHRYN BASSETT kathrynb@kpcnews.net

AUBURN — Twenty wooden Adirondack chairs transformed into unique works of art by local artists are on display in downtown Auburn throughout the summer. “Kick Back Adirondack Art is presented by the Downtown Auburn Business Association. The Adirondack chairs were especially built by local carpenter Pat Payton. Area artists have taken the chairs and created works of art featuring different themes and styles. The exhibit runs through Labor Day Weekend and the chairs will be auctioned during a dinner and wine tasting Sept. 13, with proceeds from the chairs split between DABA and the artists. DABA then uses the proceeds for seed money for its next exhibit, as well as other projects it is involved in throughout the year, said DABA president Mike Littlejohn.

“All that money goes back to the community, Littlejohn said. DABA also will award cash prizes at the end of the exhibit. The Fort Wayne Museum of art will select its choice for the top three chairs, based on artistic criteria. The public is invited to vote for their favorite three chairs, with the people’s Choice scores being combined with the museum’s to determine the winners. Ballots should be turned in to Carbaugh Jewelers or The Busy Brush Gallery. Participating artists are: Mark Ober, Sandy Kessler, Shellie Bellinger, Pat Delagrange, Amanda Peet, Crystal Carper, Sarah Rayle, Pat Phillips, Jessica L.D. Greene, Michaele Marks, Megan Satkowiak, Nina Bennett, John Platt IV, Rita Foster, artists from Tempus Technologies, John Platt III, Aaron Brown, Tia Hapner, Emma Taylor Metcalf and Alisha Getts.

Lake associations serve many purposes

BUI From page 4

The new law was in response to a boating accident on Lake Monroe that claimed the life of a woman and her grandson. “It will not change our commitment to making the waterways safe; that will remain unchanged, Heidenreich said. “We will patrol the waterways of northeast Indiana dilligently and focus our efforts on intoxicated boaters, as well as any other boating violations.

BALL LAKE — The purpose of lake associations isn’t just for recreational or social purposes. They’re much more than that, according to Marj Lilley, vice president of the 50member Ball Lake Association. Her husband, Walt Lilley, serves as the 85-acre-lake association’s president, and she said he is currently working on securing

Lake and River Enhancement funding for aquatic management. “We have invasive weeds. There’s a lot of them around — whether from other boats or sites, Marj Lilley said. “They’re away from areas people want to go swimming and clog boat motors. Rene Scheimann, president of the Lakes James Lake Association, said its mission is lake promotion. “Our mission is to promoted the lake, to protect, enhance, she said.

The Lake James Lake Association sponsors many events throughout the year, she said, including a triathlon, a seaplane splash in, an antique boat show, July 4 flotilla, co-sponsor of the Philharmonic playing at Pokagon State Park, and assists in collecting money for fireworks. “The lake association is closing in on 700 members out of 900 residents, Scheimann said. “One of our big things is lakes and See ASSOCIATION page 9

rivers enhancement. “For lake safety, we maintain flags and buoys. We have a boater safety course,” she said. “Last year, we contributed $1,000 to the sheriff’s lake patrol.” Scheimann said the Lakes James Lake Association has been organized since the 1950s.

Lilley said a local organization that keeps people up-to-date on lake issues is the Steuben County Lakes Council. The council has existed for more than 30 years and protects the lakes and rivers. “It’s a wonderful organization,” she said. “Purple loose strife is invasive. Around here, it’s under control. The council keeps you up to date on rules and laws.” Lilley said people on her lake keep their eyes open for overdevelopment, but she said, “I think we’re maxed out here.”

Scary ‘Lake’ novelist’s works still live on BY MIKE MARTURELLO mikem@kpcnews.net

general well-being of an innocent party or community — in this case, the fictitious county we know in real life as Steuben and the town of Jericho. (The names were changed to protect the innocent.) Our protagonist, writer Elliott Wages, whose shoes Largent typically filled from the point of view as the storyteller of the book, ended up saving the day. There were subplots with a local mayor who turned evil who wanted a local festival to go on as scheduled, even though people coming to town from Fort Jane (Fort Wayne), who were out enjoying what we know as Lake James, could be harmed, if not killed. There were all of the elements that made a good thriller and that made Karl the author he was. Wages had come to the sleepy resort town of Jericho, which we lovingly know as Angola, to finish an overdue novel. Instead of working, Wages spends his days with booze-soaked locals, and he becomes romantically involved with a local heiress.

LAKE GAGE — He was one of those guys who always had a devilish grin on his face, kind of like the cat that had just eaten a mouse and was trying to hide the fact, even though the tail was still visible. In northeast Indiana, R. Karl Largent was known as the man who would write a weekly column for The Herald Republican and KPC Largent Media Group. His weekly conversation with readers was mostly funny and he never missed an edition, starting in 1989, until he became ill with cancer in his final year, 2003. Most people only knew Karl through his work, whether it was his column, “The Curmudgeon’s Corner, or his books. “He was a very complex person and not someone whose brain you could easily

access, said his widow, Wilma “Moonbeam Largent. “The real Karl Largent didn’t like people all that well. Beyond the comfort of Lake Gage and Steuben County, Karl Largent was an author who would pen some rather scary or thrilling books. Some were horrors, some technothrillers. Some featured awful creatures, others spies and espionage. His early books were written under the name Robin Karl. Most of his books were under his actual name. At the urging of friends, in 1993, Karl penned a book set loosely in Steuben County. Like the ubiquitous saying, “I’m going to the lake this weekend, the name of the book, simply, was “The Lake. It was book that combined militaryindustrial complex chemistry gone bad and some of the scariest fish that could be found in lakes, gar, or garpike. Typical of Karl’s books, “The Lake featured a plot where a sinister creature or individual, in this case mutant gar and a toxic fog, were threatening the health and

NOVELIST From page 10

All of the trouble originated from the plant that had been a defense contractor, which was located at Montana Mills (Nevada Mills). Karl was always thinking and always coming up with wild ideas. When asked where he got his ideas for books, Wilma said, “I often wondered myself. He was a very complex person. I often didn’t know what was going on in his

mind. He often said there was more going on between his two ears than in the entire world outside. One time, Karl’s vivid imagination got him into a bit of hot water with the government. A book he had written included a detail about a top-secret, underwater sled the U.S. government had developed and deployed. In Largent’s mind, that’s where it originated and the only place where it existed. In the eyes of the CIA, well, that was a different story. After the book was published, the CIA came calling, wanting to know where

Largent got his information about the sled. Turns out it was a real piece of equipment, and it was top secret. But no one had leaked the information to Karl; he made it up. The combination of Karl’s humorous columns and his intense novels intrigued many, but he didn’t open up to many people outside his family and a few close friends. “People used to say, ‘I wish I would have known him better.’ Well, lots of luck, Wilma said. Many would try to befriend him, but that didn’t happen. He wasn’t very social, though he was opening up a bit more at church in

his later years. Wilma said the couple would host friends ‌ but Karl would typically retire to his room, where he would write. Beyond his novels, Karl had published some business texts books and a book on writing, “How To Write A Novel,â€? which is still available as a new title on Amazon. Wilma is still receiving some royalties from his work. Many of Karl’s fiction titles can be found online through used book sellers. And his collection of columns that appeared in The Herald Republican is available at the newspaper office in downtown Angola.

Backyard a nice camping spot BY GRACE HOUSHOLDER graceh@kpcnews.net

LIGONIER — As Dorothy said in “The Wizard of Oz,” “There’s no place like home. There’s no place like home.” That statement includes a lot of things, sometimes, even camping. Nate and Anne Lowe of Ligonier enjoy camping in the backyard of a church they neighbor. In their interview below they offer some tips for camping in your own backyard — or possibly the neighbor’s backyard! Nate Lowe is an administrator for The Crossing Education System. Anne Lowe, a stay-at-

home mom, is very active in volunteer activities. They have three children: Lydia, 11; Isaiah, 8; and Micah, 4. Why do you like backyard camping? For the convenience. We actually camp in the backyard of a church we neighbor. The church has a pavilion with picnic tables and a fire pit. We don’t have to pack up a bunch of stuff. We can run into the house to wash hands, go to the bathroom, grab drinks, get snacks, etc. We also don’t have to worry about food storage. Another reason we love it is because we can be spontaneous. If it is a nice night we can throw

the tents up in a few minutes. It is free plus we don’t have to worry about sharing space with hundreds of other campers at a busy campground. When do you camp out? Starting in the spring and throughout the fall. Mostly we camp on weekends … at least once a month. We have bonfires without camp-outs on other nights. Have you camped in other places? My husband and kids have camped out a few times in a private spot down around Marion where they meet up with cousins. Grandpa has even joined in on the

fun down there. Right now with the ages our kids are backyard camping is the best. It is the simplest and if a little one has to go potty or wants their real bed at 2 in the morning, it is no problem. What tips do you have for families that would like to try backyard camping? We prefer to wait until our kids are ages 3-4. Otherwise the strange sleeping arrangement/schedule can really throw off their mood the next day. We try to keep meals simple but somewhat healthy — finger foods that include fruits and vegetables. Of course, we always have s’mores! Make sure you

dress your kids warmly for nighttime. Once the sun goes down it can get quite cool. Don’t be afraid of dirt because camping will make you dirty — another reason it is nice to be close to home! Invite friends. Sitting around a bonfire is a great bonding experience. Nate adds: Check the weather forecast. When using a fire pit around children, keep the fire inside a fire ring that is clearly defined by bricks or rocks. Kids are fascinated with fire and love to stick stuff in it, like long sticks. A barrier will help keep them out and the fire in.

On Wednesday and Saturday mornings, farmers, bakers, and caramel makers diverge on Ninth Street in Auburn courthouse square, selling goods, from asparagus to whole grain bread to dark chocolate raspberry caramels. The group is a part of the local farmers market, selling goods directly to consumers, eliminating the middleman and providing the community with fresh, seasonal grown food. Both days start at 7 a.m. and end at 1 p.m. However, if some vendors sell their goods early, they head home early too. Farmers markets provide

plenty of homegrown produce. Betty Meiring, 79, has sold vegetables and plants for more than 20 years in downtown Auburn. She used to own a greenhouse on U.S. 6.

Since Meiring’s early day of selling goods, she’s increased her stock. Instead of just selling vegetables, she sells hanging baskets and sweet potato plants. “I used to raise a lot of

pumpkins, but they got too heavy for me, said Meiring, who spends her winters in Florida. This year, she sells a new type of cucumber that has a thinner skin, is easier to cut, and according to her, “better for eating. While most markets start in May, they don’t reach full capacity until June – when most crops come in. Dan Ohlemacher, a resident of Auburn, sells squash, cucumbers, and asparagus. He comes every Wednesday and Saturday and says that both are good days. “If you’re thinking of doing this, go get your head examined, Ohlemacher said. While Ohlemacher joked about selling, he admitted that making a lot of money is not his goal. “It’s a hobby for me, and there is a lot of competition, See MARKETS page 15

MARKETS From page 14

Ohlemacher said. “It’s not an easy world out here. People from outside Auburn also sell at the market. Lora Schnurr of Fort Wayne sells her homemade caramels made with natural extracts. Caramels were a hobby — something she made for her family around Christmastime — but eventually she decided to make a profit. She lets people taste-test the caramels, which come in flavors

from from sea salt caramel to dark chocolate raspberry. Local farmers markets have plenty of options for those looking to buy home grown produce. The produce grown is seasonal. There is also more than just produce at the market too. One vendor in Auburn sold homemade soap. The goods at each market will vary, since vendors grow different things; however, finding one in Northeast Indiana will not be difficult. Steuben, LaGrange, and Noble counties each have bustling markets, too.
