Nostalgia takes the reins at Christmas in Country

Teams of horses pulled plows and wagons in the farming community where Dick Griffis was raised.

Griffis watched such a team from the seat of a snowplow that his father built. That was at Carroll and Hand roads, north of Fort Wayne. That was early in Griffis’ story, which is 76 and growing.

It’s a special feeling that has defied time. Griffis and other members of the DeKalb County Horsemen’s Association share that feeling with crowds at about 90 events each year.

They will do so again four nights in December at Christmas in the Country at the Allen County Fairgrounds.

Griffis said the club’s horse-drawn contingent is always received warmly on those cold nights. The club will take four teams

to take turns pulling two wagons. The clop-clop of hooves will echo through the stillness. Strings of holiday lights will silhouette the leafless trees.

Families will bundle up in blankets for the adventure that will leave them right where they started.

“We get a tremendous

The DeKalb County Horsemen’s Association stays busy spring into winter, weather-permitting. Griffis now lives in Garrett, where the Christmas Parade of Lights at 5:30 p.m. Nov. 19 will allow no motorized vehicles — only horses, ponies and mules.

Then the club will go to Hamilton Lake and then Salomon Farm Park from 1-5 p.m. Dec. 3, and then Fremont and Angola and Edgerton, Ohio, east of Butler.

The teams that go to Christmas in the Country might be horses or mules or Haflingers, which are smaller than work horses but are bred to pull loads.

They’re in parades, they’re in everything. They’re really good around people, and it’s the people we have in our club that makes them that way,” Griffis said.

Mike Hardiek, one of the event coordinators for Santacon Fort Wayne, got the idea while visiting Cincinnati, Ohio. He saw thousands of Santa Clauses and holiday-themed individuals walking around the city one winter. After inquiring into the details of the event, he learned of Santacon Cincinnati, which is tied into helping a nonprofit. Hardiek felt it was all a perfect match for Fort Wayne.

Santacon Fort Wayne is an opportunity for people 21-years and older to dress as a favorite holiday figure — whether it be Santa Claus, Mrs. Claus, Rudolph, an elf or Ralphie from “A Christmas Story” — and enjoy some of the best restaurants and bars in downtown Fort Wayne.

Christmas in the Park ‘fun, fascinating and free’

Christmas in the Park will celebrate with activities focusing on the meaning of Christmas.

Crowds are expected to the festival Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 26 and 27, at Franke Park.

Judi Hapke, Christ Child Festival board member and publicity chairwoman for the event, expects it to meet and exceed the “three F’s” — fun, fascinating and free. “It’s more than just a walk through and observe type festival,” Hapke said. “There will be plenty of things for people to get involved in. We expect more than 10,000 people. It will open to the public at 11 a.m. and close at 5 p.m.

Visitors can park in the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo lot for free and then make the short walk to the pavilion and several tents where the activities will be held.

The largest of the tents will feature the Animal Grams petting area with sheep, a donkey, chickens and more, games for children, crafts and entertainment featuring several local talents including City Councilman Tom Didier singing Christmas carols.

Camels brought up from Southern Indiana will be next to the tent decorated to represent the Magi — the Kings who traveled to Bethlehem to worship the baby Jesus.

Inside another tent will be a representation of the streets of Bethlehem, with a census taker at the entrance asking visitors to tell their ZIP Code, the number of persons in their party and how they heard about the festival. Hapke said it will all be recorded on a scroll, which will “give us an idea of the demographics of our guests and how to prepare for next year. They’ll get to smell frankincense, which was one of the gifts brought to the baby Jesus.” There will also be a live Nativity and the youth theater group Fire & Light (formerly Audience of One) will be dressed in period costumes mingling with the crowd.

The Christmas story will be told via recording in one tent that features life-size figures of Mary, Joseph and the baby Jesus, the three kings and shepherds.

Festivalgoers are urged to bring their cameras and cell phones. Bright red, 4-foot-tall words Joy, Love and Hope will make excellent photo ops for possible Christmas card use. Horse-drawn

wagon and carriage rides might also serve as photo ops.

Hapke said people are invited to bring reading glasses and new white underwear for distribution by jail chaplains to inmates at the Allen County Jail.

Local seamstresses, who have been making hundreds of dresses for the Little Dresses for Africa program, will display their work. Visitors are urged to write a note and donate money for postage to send the garments around the world.

People will also have the opportunity to express their thanks to law enforcement officers by penning a note that will be attached to the gift bags of candy to Fort Wayne Police and Allen County Sheriff officers.

A decorated red, white and blue Christmas tree, which will be given to the Veterans Administration Hospital, will include personal notes written by festival attendees to thank veterans for their service.

In addition, folks will be able to learn ideas for constructing crafts and food items for sharing as Christmas gifts. There will be balloons for kids and free cookies, lemonade, coffee and hot chocolate. Donated books, CDs and DVDs will also be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Christmas in the Park, which is sponsored by the Christ Child Festival committee, is an all-volunteer activity. Hapke said persons interested in helping can find an application form on the group’s website: christchildfest.org, complete it and send it in. Fort Wayne Museum of Art brings in big names Early 20th century artists – Picasso, Braque and Léger – now at art museum

Three of the greatest modern artists have come together in the Fort Wayne Museum of Art’s exhibition: “Picasso, Braque and Léger: 20th Century Modern Masters.”

The works available to view by Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque and Fernand Léger give insight into an art period that marked a substantial break from the longstanding traditions of the art world, including the creation of cubism and collage and significant strides in printmaking, symbolism and surrealism.

Curated by the FWMoA’s president and CEO Charles Shepard, exhibitions production manager Lauren Wolfer and exhibitions content manager Elizabeth Goings, “Modern Masters” dedicates a room to each artist. The artists’ artwork is placed next to work with a similar style and theme, rather than simply organized in chronological order. In this way, the art pieces work with and play upon the other, creating a cohesive and pleasing visual narrative, and not simply a historical timeline.

Though Braque and Picasso worked together before the outbreak of World War I and Léger utilized the duos’ creation of cubism, each artist has his own style and story to learn and understand. Picasso is known worldwide for his symbolic and geometric style, and Braque also

Additionally, Léger worked extensively in cubism like Picasso and Braque but focused intensely on the rise of machinery and technology after the Great War. These themes and styles are present in the “Modern Masters” exhibition and provide an understanding of the world in the early 20th century. Any and all viewers are encouraged to enjoy the exhibition, as shows at the FWMoA are not only for art buffs or historians, said Shepard. While the FWMoA may not have the same quantity as the museums in Chicago, New York or Los Angeles, it still has the same quality.

All of the artwork in

the “Modern Masters” exhibition, organized by the Contemporary and Modern Print Exhibition, was lent by an anonymous collector who does not allow the show to travel very often, making it both exquisite and rare. The FWMoA is also the national home and director of the American Cut Glass Association’s

Permanent Collection.

Fort Wayne’s mayor recovers from surgery Deputy Mayor Karl Bandemer is overseeing operations for the city of Fort Wayne while Mayor Tom Henry recovers from heart bypass surgery.

Henry underwent surgery Nov. 7 and is expected to return to regular work activities in a week to 10 days, according to a city state-

ment.

Christmas in Huntertown accepts gifts for families The Huntertown United Methodist Church and its Outreach Clothing Ministry is in need of donations to support the eighth annual Christmas in Huntertown event, which will take place Dec. 7-9.

Fun event nets $29,000 for Literacy Alliance The Literacy Alliance held its third annual Laughs for Literacy fundraising event, a Twisted Colleague-Wed Game, at Parkview Mirro Center for Research.

Eleven teams competed as their fans cheered them on. Office colleagues, as opposed to newlyweds, were asked questions about one another in a twist on “The Newlywed Game.” More than 200 attendees enjoyed the event. Following the Colleague-Wed Game, comedic hypnotist Rusty Z entertained the audience. The event raised more than $29,000 to provided literacy services to those in Allen County.

The Literacy Alliance works to help adults improve their education and achieve their high school equivalency diploma. All classes are offered free to students.

The organization operates

seven neighborhood-based learning centers and services, which include basic adult education, small group reading classes and prep for the High School Equivalency diploma (formerly GED). The agency uses professional teachers and trained tutors, and coordinates outreach services including free child care and transportation.

The Literacy Alliance began in the 1960s as the Fort Wayne Literacy Coalition, which worked to match volunteer tutors with adults who wanted to improve reading skills. In 1988, the group merged with the Northeast Indiana Literacy Council to become the Three Rivers Literacy Alliance and services were expanded.

In 2004, the name of the organization was shortened to The Literacy Alliance.

Saint Mary’s Christmas Box to help 1,000 families

One thousand families will receive a box crammed with canned foods through the Saint Mary’s Soup Kitchen Christmas Box Program.

On Dec. 10, those families also will get a loaf of fresh bread, butterspread, potatoes and either a ham or turkey.

Persons wishing to be eligible for a Christmas box can register at Saint Mary’s Catholic Church at the corner of Jefferson Boulevard and Lafayette Street: the Saturday before Thanksgiving, Nov. 19, from 10 a.m. to noon; or the Saturday after Thanksgiving, Nov. 26, from 10 to 11 a.m.

A photo ID, driver’s license or Green Card is required. The person registering will then receive a postcard in the mail, which should be presented to receive the food box.

Though the distribution date is still a month away, volunteers are already arranging for the tons of food needed to fill the boxes, ordering the meat and stockpiling the potatoes. According to Joe Miller, director of the Christmas Box Program, each family will get a variety of canned fruits and vegetables and spaghetti and sauce. In addition, they’ll receive a fresh

When the people come in on the 10th, they’ll present their postcard, pick up a food box, bread, butter-spread and potatoes. Outside, they can choose what

Santacon Fort Wayne can best be described as a pub crawl, though participants are not required to stay on a specific route and may visit the designated Santacon restaurants and bars in whatever order they choose. This not only keeps the locations from becoming overly crowded but allows for those participating to stay as long as they like at whatever locations they want.

The Santacon organization is a loosely-based group that cities all over can adapt to fit their needs. While it is convenient to use because of its established marketing and networking, not all Santacons are hosted as nonprofit benefits or are what Hardiek calls “userfriendly.” He is adamant that that will not be the case for Fort Wayne’s Santacon.

“Some people [at the bigger Santacon events] become tasteless. We’re trying to make sure everyone is respectful on that day,” said Hardiek.

All of the proceeds during Santacon Fort Wayne will go to the Mizpah Shrine Patient Van Replacement Fund as part of the Shriner’s Hospital for Children in Chicago and Cincinnati. The hospitals serve patients in need of its services regardless of the patient’s ability to pay.

However, in addition to the cost of treatment, it is often difficult for patients and their families to afford and manage the long distances to the hospitals. To meet this need, Shriner-funded vans run daily to each hospital location. A van

picks up the patient and their family, drives them to the hospital in Cincinnati or Chicago, waits for their appointments to end and then drives them back to their homes.

The long distances put thousands of miles on the Shriner’s vans. These vans often need extensive maintenance and eventually need replaced.

Santacon Fort Wayne’s proceeds directly assist in replacing the old vans for newer, more reliable ones.

Lanyards are $20 each and allow the opportunity to win raffles and entry into the after party at the Freemasons Hall; entry into just the after party for those who wish not to join the pub crawl is $10.

Public invited to exhibit of winter theme artwork

Every eight weeks, the Fort Wayne Artists Guild fills the art gallery at Heritage of Fort Wayne with paintings and drawings to be enjoyed by the residents as well as the public.

This month, the gallery is filled by the Fort Wayne Artists Guild’s Winter Exhibition. This particular

exhibition is a collection of work by 20 artists all following a winter theme.

Heritage of Fort Wayne has worked with the group of artists since its opening, and even offers a meet-andgreet this year, giving the public a chance to meet the artists behind the Winter Exhibition. The meet-andgreet will take place from 1-3:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 20, at Heritage of Fort

Wayne, 5250 Heritage Parkway. The exhibition began Nov. 1, and last for eight weeks.

At its November meeting, the Guild will feature award-winning artist Douglas Runyan presenting “Painting Snow.”

The public is welcome.

The meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 16, at Concordia Lutheran High School, 1601 St. Joe

IPFW ponders what’s to come next

As the impact of recently announced cuts to programs and departments at Indiana University Purdue University Fort Wayne really sinks in, another possibility that once seemed distant looms closer and closer.

“I have a feeling that what’s going on is just a prelude to more handwringing, gnashing of teeth and fury, I guess,” said businessman Larry Lee, a member of the university’s community advisory council.

The boards of trustees of the two universities are expected to decide in December whether to adopt a recommendation from a legislative study committee to split the Fort Wayne operation into two.

“Everything we’ve been hearing is that it is far more likely to happen than not to happen,” said Jeff Malanson, an assistant professor of history. “All of the administrators who have any connection to

these conversations still make it clear that theoretically there is the chance that it could fall apart, or that something less extreme than a complete split could be the outcome.

But as of now, all indications are that what IPFW is right now is not what we will be in fundamental ways a year from now.”

Lee expressed the same thought.

“We will not recognize what comes out of this as IPFW. It will be that fundamental of a change,” he said.

The Legislative Services Agency proposal would give IU the nursing and other health sciences programs and leave the rest to Purdue. But Purdue, which manages the Fort Wayne campus, has also dictated cuts in programs, departments and degrees that were far more extensive than anticipated in earlier reports from the ongoing University Strategic Alignment Process.

“USAP was intended to be forward looking,” noted

Carl Drummond, vice chancellor for academic affairs.

It fell to him to be the villain when he announced the cuts Oct. 25. The edict came from Purdue, but the specific decisions were made locally, he said.

IPFW has been experiencing a steady decline in enrollment. When the strategic plan was created, that trend was taken into consideration, “but we didn’t expect it would be as deep or last as long as it has,” Drummond acknowledged.

The problem with the board of trustees’ decision that more significant cuts were needed was that faculty members and the faculty senate were not consulted first, Malanson said.

“They did not engage in any reasonable effort at shared governance, they just made a declaration that more needed to be done,” he said. “There’s been a lot of conversation about the ‘death of the humanities’, the liberal arts at IPFW, and I

understand that reaction,” Drummond said.

While it is true that the humanities have some strong departments at IPFW, there are also those with just a handful of students. If there were ample resources, keeping them might be a possibility, “but in the current climate, we simply had to find some savings that would impact the least number of students,” Drummond said.

The turmoil has also raised an idea that many in the community had long ago discarded, that IPFW be reinvented as an independent university, rather than continue as is or be torn apart.

“It is way beyond time that we should be relying on anybody else outside our sphere of influence deciding what’s in our best interest,” said Lee, a supporter of independence. “Are we going to continue to be an affordable, comprehensive university, the only one in northeast Indiana? Or are we going to be restricting

the humanities and gutting the arts and sciences colleges to the point that we are not a comprehensive university, we’re basically an engineering and business university with lip service to certain other disciplines?

“This matter is very important to me. I don’t know how many more years I have to live, but I cannot imagine anything more important to the welfare of northeast Indiana than the issue of governance at IPFW.” Although it probably has not been nurtured or polished as it should have been by Purdue and IU, “It is our greatest asset,” Lee added.

The original intent of the LSA study, as decreed by the Indiana General Assembly, was to define what its redesignation of the campus as a “multisystem metropolitan” university would look like. That was believed by many to be an opening to produce a greater level of independence; the suggestion of a split into

two separate regional campuses came late in the process.

Although both IU and Purdue were expected to increase their investment as they increased their ownership in their pieces of the pie, no details have been released.

“I don’t care how much Purdue invests now to quell the storm, there’s going to be issues that come up year after year after year,” Lee said.

The downside to independence has always been that a degree from a Fort Wayne university would not carry the same weight as the IU and Purdue degrees IPFW students now receive, at least not in its early years.

“It is the best of both worlds,” Malanson said.

Faculty leaders are considering a variety of perspectives for what all this means for the university’s future, and are trying to work with the administration to find the best way to move forward in the best interests of everybody, Malanson added.

Trail to link Moser Park to Rivergreenway Fort Wayne Mayor Tom Henry, New Haven Mayor Terry McDonald, representatives from Fort Wayne Trails and community and neighborhood leaders have broken ground on the Six Mile Creek Trail.

The groundbreaking, held Wednesday, Oct. 19, was for phase one, a nearly one-mile long trail expansion from South Phoenix Parkway at Southtown Centre to the intersection of Tillman Road and Lemar Drive.

When the full, multiphase trail is complete it will contribute significantly to connectivity in the community by providing a 26-mile continuous loop linking Moser Park in New Haven, Fort Wayne’s Rivergreenway and the Six Mile Trail.

“Investing in trails is critical to the current and future success of our

community and region,” Henry said in a statement.

“It’s great to see trail development in southeast Fort Wayne as we continue our commitment to enhancing quality of life amenities that make our City a point of destination for individuals, families, and businesses.”

Added McDonald, “We are excited about the Six Mile Creek Trail expansion.

Our residents are eager to have more connectivity that will enhance recreational, leisure, exercise opportunities for pedestrians, joggers and bicyclists. I know connecting with the region through the trail network will strengthen our community and position us well for the future.”

This first phase of the Six Mile Creek is an investment of $1,298,050 and includes design, right of way acquisition and construction by local contractor, Brooks

Construction. The project is federally funded through the Northeast Indiana Regional Coordinating Council with a portion coming from local entities including a $100,000 donation presented at the groundbreaking by Fort Wayne Trails Incorporated.

“Our mission is to support trail growth and usage throughout the trail network and we are pleased to make a contribution to aid in safe connectivity for this important trail that will one day offer a unique asset of a 26-mile continuous loop,” said Kent Castleman,

executive director of Fort Wayne Trails Inc. “Besides completing the loop, the Six Mile Creek Trail offers a unique blend of nature and culture as it passes through urban, suburban and rural areas.”

Future phases of the trail will run east along Tillman Road to the Trier Ditch, which was historically known as the Six Mile Creek. The remainder of the loop route is still being planned but will generally follow the Trier Ditch to Moser Park and the New Haven Community Center where it will connect to

“People are missing them, and especially people who are 60 to 80 years old and they can relate back to when they had them on the farm. And the younger generation likes looking at them because they’re just neat; they’re just a special animal.”
