Saturday, Oct. 1, was a big day in New Haven as the city celebrated its 150th anniversary. Activities got underway early as six local churches opened their doors for public tours. Then, Taste of New Haven brought visitors into downtown to sample a variety of food choices. That was followed by a sesquicentennial best beard contest and games for kids. The celebration ended at 7 p.m. with two hours of music by the Brat Pack. Just before noon the Indiana Bicentennial torch came to town. New Haven Adams Township Parks & Recreation Superintendent Mike Clendenen, behind a line of police cars and motorcycles with lights flashing and sirens blaring, carried the torch high as he ran into the New Haven High School parking lot. A cheering crowd of more than 100 people waving inflatable torches were

there to greet him. Though his part of the torch tour was just a little more than a half-mile, he said “it was a run I will never forget.” After a few words from New Haven Mayor Terry McDonald, Clendenen affixed the torch to a special bracket on the side of an SUV carrying the next torch-bearer, 83-year-old Lois Hess of the Townhouse Retirement Community, for the next leg of its journey through the county. The crowd shifted from the school to Broadway for Taste of New Haven. Persons purchasing a $2 ticket could sample a variety of goodies from several local vendors. Richard’s restaurant served up chicken, potatoes and rhubarb pie, while Rack & Helen’s was passing out pulled pork sliders. In the middle of all the grazing, a parade of about 30 motorcyclists roared through town led by Allen County Sheriff’s Department offiSee 150TH, Page A13

Hoagland native and resident Hoffman said he went on the board four years ago with 20 objectives he hoped to see addressed, but only six have actually been accomplished. One of the things he has pushed for is career centered education for those students who do not plan to go to college. A partnership has been

Making the entrances of its buildings more secure will be the top priority of the $87.5 million in repairs, renovations and additions on tap for East Allen County Schools. “The safety of our students is our highest priority,” said Kirby Stahly, assistant superintendent and chief financial officer. All five of the district’s attendance areas will see building improvements, but an estimated two-thirds of the funds, or about $60 million, will be spent on New Haven projects. The building program got a jump-start when no referendum petition, which would have mandated it be put to

I’m not anti-professional development,” said Hoffman, “but I think it’s ridiculous that we are paying $96 a day for subs to be in those classrooms. Unfortunately, I’m in the minority on this subject.” The Heritage High See EACS, Page A6
