Auction bidding gets muscled up BY AARON ORGAN aorgan@kpcmedia.com
AUBURN — Friday was, unofficially at least, classic muscle day at the Auctions America Auburn Fall show and sale. Dozens upon dozens of 1950s and 1960s American muscle cars roared onto the auction block in the main auction building at Auburn Auction Park before a crowd of thousands of collectors and admirers. The vehicles commanded large bids, naturally. Just after 1 p.m., a black 1967 Shelby GT 350, one of Auctions America’s featured lots at this show, crossed the block, and bidding opened at $70,000 for the classic muscle car with sharply contrasting racing stripes, valued
between $90,000-$110,000. Bids grew to $91,000 but stalled before surpassing the reserve price. Two hours later, a 1960 Chevrolet Corvette Roadster previously owned by iconic actor Burt Reynolds sauntered onto the block without a reserve attached. The cream-colored classic sold for $58,000. Immediately after it, another ’Vette, a 1960 fuel-injected Roadster with a classic red-andwhite color scheme, attracted a handful of bidders, soaring its past its reserve price before selling for $95,000. Bids were furious for an intimidating black 1966 Plymouth Satellite Hemi Two-Door Hardtop, which sold for $56,000. SEE AUCTION, PAGE A7

Cruise-in cars have histories BY KATHRYN BASSETT kbassett@kpcmedia.com
AUBURN — Each car told a story. With details of original owners, painstaking restorations and rarity of the vehicles, automobiles in dozens of colors, makes, years and models filled the DeKalb County Courthouse square and streets beyond Friday during the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Festival Downtown CruiseIn. TODAY’S The cruise-in EVENTS at has become one of the ACD the festival’s most Festival, popular events, with PAGE A3. owners bringing more than 500 vehicles to display each year. A 1962 Plymouth Savoy pulling a 1967 Scotsman Trailer attracted plenty of attention. The car was purchased by its third owner, Paul Broxon of Huntington, in 1997 for $600. When new, the vehicle was priced at $2,369. The Scotsman Trailer was marketed to customers with an eye toward thriftiness, Broxon said. He purchased the canned-ham-style trailer in 2011 from Carroll, Ohio, for $300. It had sat abandoned at the Coon Path Campground for about 30 years. “We used to camp at Coon Path Campground,” Broxon said. “I remember seeing (the trailer) when I was 10 years old. It was black and said ‘Harley-Davidson’ on it at that time.” Restoration of the trailer involved removing raccoon waste one-inch deep, thousands of carpenter ants, mice “and

any other critter I had to battle,” Broxon said. “Hunters had used it for an outhouse. It stunk badly.” But Broxon was not deterred. In his mind he saw it restored and finished. Now, Broxson takes his trailer to gatherings of the Tin Can Tourists — an organization committed to the celebration of classic trailers and motor coaches. He attributes his passion for vintage trailers to his camping experiences as a child. “I’m from a family of seven. My parents used to take us camping every year,” he said. Broxon also owns two other vintage trailers. One is on display in a museum in Kokomo. The other — a Teardrop — has appeared at previous ACD Festival cruise-ins.

The history of a 1960 Volvo PV 544 was presented alongside the vehicle, owned by Steve and Molly Allen of Auburn. The car originally was purchased in Germany, and the Allens bought it in 1976. It was modified for amateur racing and changed back to street use, but retained the racing engine. Volvo 544s were very successful in sports car racing in the 1960s, the vehicle’s display said. Owners were proud to proclaim the rarity of their automobiles. A 1971 Dodge Super Bee built in the Dodge Charger body style makes it a rare muscle car, the vehicle’s display board said. A total of 5,054 Super Bees were produced and only 766 four-speeds were made.
Obama weighing ‘limited and narrow’ action
WASHINGTON (AP) — Edging toward a punitive strike against Syria, President Barack Obama said Friday he is weighing “limited and narrow” action as the administration bluntly accused Bashar Assad’s government of launching a chemical weapons attack that killed at least 1,429 people — far more than previous estimates — including more than 400 children. No “boots on the ground,” Obama said, seeking to reassure Americans weary after a decade of war in Iraq and Afghanistan. With France as his only major public ally, Obama told reporters he has a strong preference for multilateral action. He added, “Frankly, part of the challenge we end up with here is a lot of people think something should be done but nobody wants to do it.” Halfway around the world, U.S. warships were in place in the Mediterranean Sea armed. They carried cruise missiles, long a first-line weapon of choice for presidents because they can find a target hundreds of miles distant without need of air cover or troops on the ground. In what appeared increasingly like the pre-attack endgame, U.N. personnel dispatched to Syria carried out a fourth and final day of inspection as they sought to determine precisely what happened in last week’s attack. The international contingent arranged to depart on Saturday and head to laboratories in Europe with the samples they have collected. Video said to be taken at the scene shows victims writhing in pain, twitching and exhibiting other symptoms associated with exposure to nerve agents. The videos distributed by activists to support their claims of a chemical attack were consistent with Associated Press SEE SYRIA, PAGE A7
