Sentenced man head-butts door while leaving court AUBURN — A Garrett man head-butted a glass door in the DeKalb Superior Court I office Thursday, shortly after his sentencing hearing, authorities reported. Lance Krider, 28, of the 1700 block of South Road, had just been sentenced to 12 years in prison by Judge Kevin Wallace for dealing in methamphetamine, a Class B felony. As Krider was being escorted out of the court office and back to the DeKalb County Jail, he hit a glass panel in the door with his head, DeKalb County Sheriff Don Lauer said. “Apparently he was mad at the sentence he had gotten,” said Lauer. “He reached out and head-butted the glass with his head.” Lauer said law enforcement officials quickly restrained Krider. He was transported to DeKalb Health hospital in Auburn, where he received staples for the injury to his head. After his release from the hospital, he immediately was transported to the Indiana Department of Corrections to serve his sentence. Lauer said new charges of criminal mischief related to Thursday’s incident are pending against Krider.

Fair features barn ceremony AUBURN — The DeKalb County Free Fall Fair continues today with a full list of activities, including the start of a new building project. A groundbreaking ceremony for a new horse barn that will be built at the DeKalb County Fairgrounds will take place today at 6:30 p.m. at the fairgrounds horse arena. The DeKalb County Fair Association intends to build a large, new horse barn on the fairgrounds on South Union Street and revamp its horse arena. The fair association will demolish its existing horse barn and construct a 27,389-square-foot building with a 4,802-squarefoot attached canopy area. It will
occupy the south end of the site of the existing horse arena. The project will turn the horse arena 90 degrees, so it will run east-to-west. The horse barn will be 333 feet long, not counting its canopy. The building will have an 8-foot-high concrete wall, with a Nucor steel structure resting on it. The horse barn will have a dirt floor and could be the site of antique tractor pulls, garden tractor pulls, rodeos or winter horse shows. Today also is Kids Day at the fair, with reduced prizes for an unlimited-ride wristband. TODAY

UNITED NATIONS (AP) — The five permanent members of the deeply divided U.N. Security Council reached agreement Thursday on a resolution to eliminate Syria’s chemical weapons, a major step in taking the most controversial weapon off the battlefield of the world’s deadliest current conflict. Senior U.S., Russian, British and French diplomats confirmed the agreement, which also includes China. Britain’s U.N. Ambassador Mark Lyall Grant said he would introduce the text to the Security Council’s 10 non-permanent members Thursday night. A vote on the resolution still depends on how the full council responds to the draft, and on how soon an international group that oversees the global treaty on chemical weapons can adopt a plan for securing and destroying Syria’s stockpile. Diplomats said the earliest the Security Council could vote would be late Friday. On Twitter, Lyall Grant said the five veto-wielding members, known as the P-5, had agreed on a “binding and enforceable draft … resolution.” A senior U.S. State Department official said the Russians agreed to support “a strong binding and enforceable resolution.” But the draft resolution, seen by The Associated Press, makes clear that there is no trigger for any enforcement measures if Syria fails to comply with the provisions of the resolution or the dismantling of its chemical weapons stockpile. Instead, it states that in the event of non-compliance, or any use of chemical weapons, the Security Council will “impose measures

AUBURN — Josh Clifford’s 1,414-pound Maine Anjou steer maintained its winning streak Wednesday night at the DeKalb County Fairgrounds. “He’s won at every show I’ve been to,” Clifford said, “because he’s so powerful.” Wednesday, a judge chose Clifford’s steer as grand champion of the 4-H Beef Show at the DeKalb County Free Fall Fair in Auburn. Clifford, 17, of rural Auburn said he raised his champion by “being in the barn every day
and working on it.” Wednesday marked his ninth year showing steers at the fair. A senior at DeKalb High School, Clifford said he plans to enroll at Purdue University next year to study agricultural economics. He is the son of William and Lisa Clifford of Auburn. Tabitha Clifford, Josh’s cousin, showed the reserve grand champion steer, a Simmental, Wednesday at the 4-H livestock arena. Her sisters also had winning steers. Alexis Clifford exhibited the champion crossbred. McKenna Clifford showed the champion
Shorthorn and champion British breed. Jacob Warstler showed the champion Chianina steer. Baylee Rinehart, 18, of rural Hudson, also a senior at DeKalb High School, edged Josh Clifford for the premier showmanship title. She advances to the supreme showmanship contest tonight at the livestock arena. Rinehart won the senior showmanship competition to advance to the premier contest. Other showmanship winners were Abby Pranger in the intermediate division and Carlie Taylor in the junior division.
HAMILTON — One person died in a crash on Bellefontaine Road in downtown Hamilton Thursday afternoon. It appears the driver of a maroon passenger car pulled from a grocery store parking lot into the path of a pickup truck, said Hamilton Town Marshal Jeremy Warner. The car’s driver was killed in the crash. The name of the driver was being withheld Thursday so family members could be notified. Warner expected further information to be released on Friday. Warner said it is the first fatal accident within the town limits in his 16 years on the department. The crash remains under investigation. The truck was driven by Tyler Nilson, 23, of Angola. Nilson was not injured, said Warner. The truck was totalled. Also damaged was a Town of Hamilton light pole, which was toppled from its cement housing into a yard in the 3800 block of Bellefontaine Road. The road was closed for around two hours while crash reconstruction specialists from Steuben County Sheriff’s Department and Angola Police Department worked at the scene. There was a large amount of gasoline and other vehicle fluids in the road, said Warner, and Hamilton Fire Department used floor dry and sprayed water on about a block’s expanse to remove the chemicals. Steuben County Emergency Medical Service also was at the scene.
