DeKalb County school districts are celebrating the performance of students and teachers in achieving superior results on this year’s IREAD3 tests. Results announced this week showed the DeKalb Central school district achieved a 97.4 percent passing rate on the reading test for third-graders. The state average was 91.1 percent. “We are very pleased with our

students’ performance. I think our students’ success is reflective of strong classroom instruction, the strength of our literacy framework, the focus or priority we place on literacy instruction and professional development as well as the commitment our staff members, teachers and administrators give to ensuring our students’ learning needs are being met each and every day,” said DeKalb Central Assistant Superintendent Lynn Simmers. “Our students and staff in each school are to be commended for

such outstanding achievement,” said DeKalb Central Superintendent Sherry Grate. “As we review our results, we know that this is one more data point that we use to guide our instruction with our learners and to ensure our curriculum is aligned and meeting the needs of our students. This type of progress and transformation is a direct result of all staff working together to create a climate, culture and educational environment focused on students. It truly takes everyone to achieve this type of success.” Garrett-Keyser-Butler Superintendent Dennis Stockdale attributed his district’s 92.6

AUBURN — A parade of nearly two dozen classic cars escorted John A. “Jack” Randinelli to his final resting place in Woodlawn Cemetery Thursday. Only five days earlier, Randinelli, one of the founders of the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Festival, drove his own 1932 Auburn automobile in the festival’s annual Parade of Classics. The next morning, Sunday, Randinelli died at his home at age 74.

At his funeral Thursday morning in Auburn Presbyterian Church, the roster of more than a dozen pallbearers included Auburn and Cord owners from across the nation, alongside Auburn community leaders. Randinelli’s flag-draped casket occupied a position at the front of the church as the Rev. Lyle Ewing recalled highlights of Randinelli’s rich life. Ewing said each Sunday, Randinelli would tell him, “It’s a beautiful day in the neighborhood.” “Each day was a beautiful and

AUBURN — The Auctions America Auburn Fall show and sale was the company’s best, the company announced Thursday. Sales at the Labor Day weekend auction climbed above $28 million, with more than 80 percent of lots sold, Auctions America reported. What’s more, the 70,000 who attended the show mark a 40-percent spike in attendance from a year ago, the company said. Those figures translated into Auctions America’s most successful event in its four-year history. “This year’s Auburn Fall collector car weekend was simply electric,” said Auctions America president Donnie Gould. “The world came home to Auburn for this celebration of automotive culture and the response from buyers, sellers and attendees has been overwhelmingly positive.” Among the highlights from the show were Saturday’s sales of three pre-war Duesenbergs, including a 1930 Model J Convertible Coupe that commanded $1.54 million including the buyer’s 10 percent premium. Just behind it, a 1929 Duesenberg Model J Sports Sedan sold for $962,500 and a 1935 Duesenberg Model SJ Dual-Cowl Phaeton sold at $858,000.
