GOOD MORNING Ceremony planned Monday on C.R. 11-A AUBURN — A ribbon-cutting ceremony for the recently completed widening and resurfacing project on C.R. 11-A will take place Monday at 11 a.m. near the intersection of C.R. 11-A and C.R. 56. The DeKalb County Board of Commissioners is inviting the public to attend the event. The project was a joint effort between DeKalb County and the Indiana Department of Transportation. It is the final phase of a project that began with the widening and resurfacing of C.R. 11-A from Interstate 69 to C.R. 427. With completion of the final phase of the project, residents and visitors to local museums and auctions should experience less traffic congestion and much safer driving conditions, the commissioners said in a news release. The total estimated cost for the just-completed western portion of the C.R. 11-A project, including design, land acquisition, construction and construction inspection, is $2.47 million. The state contributed 80 percent of the cost, or approximately $1.98 million.
Spice user gets 8 years for fatal crash MUNCIE (AP) — A woman has been sentenced to eight years in prison for causing a fatal crash while high on a synthetic drug. A Delaware County judge ordered the prison term Tuesday for Karissa Campbell, 24, of Muncie. She pleaded guilty in June to a felony charge of causing death with a controlled substance in her system. Authorities said Campbell ingested a synthetic drug called spice before a February 2012 crash on S.R. 3 south of Muncie that killed her passenger, Jeremy Chissell, 32, of New Castle. Campbell testified that she and Chissell consumed illegal drugs “constantly” during their yearlong relationship and routinely bought spice at Muncie convenience stores.

DeKalb chamber unveils new logo AUBURN — The DeKalb Chamber Partnership introduced its new logo Wednesday. The logo features a three-armed pinwheel, with each arm representing one of its focus areas: business, community and education. “Putting skilled, educated workers in our businesses helps them prosper making for a strong community. When all the pieces are connected, it makes for a great place to live, work, and play,” said the chamber’s executive director, Shannon Carpenter. She added, “The chamber recognizes that we’ve been in a lull for the last year, but the
last few months have been very exciting. We are coming back stronger than ever, and we’re here to stay. We are taking our 100-plus years as a Chamber and combining it with modern strategies to better serve the community. Our goal is to become an integral part of each member business by providing resources that will assist them in accomplishing their goals.” The chamber is sponsoring its September cruise-in for special-interest vehicles tonight from 6:30-8:30 on the courthouse square in downtown Auburn. Weber said he thanks everyone who participated in refurbishing the field and encourages everyone to visit the field and attend a game of the young, future football stars.
Drive-in seeks to win projector BY SUE CARPENTER scarpenter@kpcmedia.com
GARRETT — The Auburn-Garrett Drive-In is competing for a projector upgrade that would allow it to continue bringing new releases to the area. At the end of the year, the majority of American drive-ins could face closure with the movie industry’s switch from film to digital format. Upgrading to digital projection costs roughly $60,000$80,000. This competition is being sponsored by Honda Motor Co., which is giving away nine projectors to the nine drive-ins around
the nation that receive the most votes. Honda originally planned to save five drive-ins, but through many donations, the company is able to help save four more. The voting has been extended through Friday for the four additional drive-ins. Auburn-Garrett operator Bruce Babbitt said he entered the drive-in for the contest about 24 hours before the previous application deadline. “That hurt our chances, I know, but at least we got in,” he said. “We are still in the contest. I have no idea how many votes
we have garnered so far,” said Babbitt. “This is a popularity contest. It has nothing to do with the drive-in’s financial ability to secure a $60,000 projector. It’s about how well they get the word out so people will vote for them.” Supporters can help by voting through the following methods: • voting once a day until Friday by either texting vote135 to 444-999 or • visiting the webpage http:// projectdrivein.com/vote_135. Drive-ins already winning projectors are in Maine, Michigan, Texas, Illinois and Oregon.
Investors pleased stimulus will stay NEW YORK (AP) — The stock market hit a record high Wednesday as investors cheered the Federal Reserve’s surprise decision to keep its economic stimulus program in place. Stocks traded slightly lower throughout the morning, but took off immediately after the Fed’s decision in the early afternoon. Bond yields fell sharply — their biggest move in nearly two years. The price of gold had its biggest one-day jump in four years as traders anticipated that the Fed’s decision might cause inflation. Fed policymakers decided to maintain the central bank’s $85 billion in monthly bond purchases, a program that has been in place since December 2012. The bond purchases encouraged borrowing by keeping interest rates low and encouraging investors to buy stocks by making bonds more expensive in comparison. While the U.S. economy appeared to be improving, the bank’s policymakers “decided to await more evidence that progress will be sustained” before deciding to slow the bond purchases. The bank also cut its full-year SEE STOCK, PAGE A8
DeKalb Central beats state ISTEP+ test averages FROM STAFF REPORTS
INDIANAPOLIS — ISTEP+ test scores at four local school districts exceeded state averages in results released today by the Indiana Department of Education. In overall passing rates for grades 3-8 combined, Fremont, Westview, DeKalb Central and Metropolitan School District of Steuben County ranked above the state averages. Statewide, 73.5 percent of students passed both the language arts and mathematics portions of the state tests. Local districts above that rate were Fremont at 76.6 percent, Westview at 76.5, DeKalb Central at 76.2 and MSD Steuben at 74.9. Hamilton students passed at a 73.4 percent rate, slightly below the state average. On individual portions of the test, DeKalb Eastern and Prairie Heights students passed the math portion of the test at a higher rate than the state average. Hamilton students topped the state average on the English portion of the test. Scores statewide improved compared to last year, with 79.5 percent of Hoosier students
passing the English-language arts portion of the test and 82.7 percent passing math up from 79.4 percent for English-language arts and 81.2 percent for math in 2012. State officials said the 2013 numbers are preliminary and will become final after students and parents have the opportunity to request re-scores of the applied skills portion of the test. DeKalb Central school district Assistant Superintendent Lynn Simmers reacted positively to the district’s results. In addition to 76.2 percent of its students passing both language arts and math, the district also exceeded the state average of 79.5 percent passing the language arts portion of the test. At DeKalb, 82 percent of students passed. In math, 85.2 percent of DeKalb Central students passed the test — also beating the state average. “Given the many challenges that surfaced during online testing sessions across the state this spring, we are certainly very pleased with our district’s results,” Simmers said. “Our staff and students are to be commended for SEE ISTEP+, PAGE A8
