Let's get 'Political' Weaving a tale: Sigourney Weaver stars in USA political miniseries ummer is usually seen as a dead season for TV. Most of the regular shows have gone into hibernation until the fall, and the prime-time hours are filled with reruns. It's even worse during summers like this one. Few networks are willing to risk challenging the ratings juggernaut that is the Olympic Games, as the nation tunes in to cheer on its favorite athletes. Once in a while, though, a gem sparkles through the summer haze. On Sunday, July 15, USA premiered the highly anticipated "Political Animals," and the buzz around it suggests that it may be one of this summer's hottest shows. Announced earlier this year to great fanfare, the limited-run series has attracted some top-tier talent to its roster, including Hollywood actress Sigourney Weaver (the "Alien" series, "Avatar"). It will continue airing on Sunday nights through the summer.

Coming in the middle of one of the most heated presidential campaigns in recent memory, "Political Animals" is a topical tale of a former First Ladyturned-secretary of state. After divorcing her womanizing husband, former president Bud Hammond, Elaine Hammond (Weaver) ran for the nation's top office herself. Although she lost the nomination, her opponent graciously named her his secretary of state. If you're noticing a similarity with a certain other secretary of state, you're not alone. Weaver herself has commented on the parallel between her character and real-life Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. "When I first heard about it, I thought "Oh, it's about Hillary," Weaver said in an interview with the "L.A. Times." "But, really, from the first page on I knew that Elaine Barrish Hammond is her own person. Her circumstances are completely different to Mrs. Clinton's. This is the story of the Hammond family. It's definitely not the story of the Clinton family." Similarities to the real world aside,

Weaver will no doubt make the character her own. She is a critically acclaimed movie actress with a resume as long as her arm. She's starred in many Hollywood classics, including "Ghostbusters" (1984); "Alien" (1979) and its three direct sequels; "Holes" (2003) and 2009's huge hit, "Avatar." Where her resume is lacking, however, is in television. "Political Animals" is her first major TV role, and her acting chops are a breath of fresh air in the summer TV drought. Although she's never won an Academy Award, she's been nominated for three (including two for Best Actress in a Leading Role), and has a bevy of other acting awards under her belt. As with almost any politician, Elaine Hammond's opponent is a journalist. Susan Berg (Carla Gugino) is a Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter who's made a name for herself by exposing the family secrets of the Hammonds. She's been eager to stick with what's worked in the past, but after muscling her way into an interview with Hammond, she discovers that there's far more to this woman than she once believed. As Berg uncovers more and more of the inner workings of the Hammond family, she finds herself conflicted between her growing sense of loyalty to a woman she respects and a career she loves. been keeping herself busy, having been in the Jim Carrey flick "Mr. Popper's Penguins" (2011), "Watchmen" (2009) and "American Gangster" (2007), among many other films. This also isn't the first time that she's cut her teeth on a political show on the small screen; she had a part in the Michael J. Fox comedy "Spin City" between 1996 and 1998. With the top-notch acting, "Political Animals" would already be pretty guaranteed to attract a loyal following. But it's not only on the screen that the high level of talent is found; a number of industry veterans stand behind the camera, too.

Strange bait Wrestler tries hand at odd fishing methods

Sheila Busteed TV Media STRANGE BAIT: This week, Animal Planet is launching a new fishing series, and the cabler has suggested it will employ the kind of ingenuity associated with MacGyver. The real catch here is that the man who will imitate the famed TV agent's inventive ways happens to be a professional wrestler. Eric Young, who currently performs with TNA Wrestling, will begin his unusual adventure in "Off the Hook: Extreme Catches" when it premieres on Sunday, July 29. The half-hour episodes will follow Young as he travels all over American waters to learn some of the most unique, strange and dangerous fishing techniques from the best fishermen in the country. Together, they'll reveal that there are far more ways to make a catch than with just the traditional rod and hook. "As an adrenaline junkie, when I come home after a hard day's work, I like to kick back and enjoy some fishing," said Young. "But in 'Off the Hook,' this is hardly relaxing because I'm setting out to do some of the world's wildest, craziest fishing techniques. But I'm up for trying anything once!" Crazy is certainly the word most non-fishers would choose when they discover that one of Young's challenges will be to capture a 300pound shark in Florida by using a pair of pantyhose. He'll also ride a kayak through whitewater rapids in an attempt to catch a massive bass in Texas. Then there's the strange tradition around Lake Michigan of using a fire extinguisher to launch live bait, which Young will also attempt. Other challenges will include underwater spear fishing and squid angling at night. Young, whose real name is Jeremy Fritz, grew up in a rural area of southwestern Ontario in Canada and has been wrestling for TNA since 2004. "Two In" will follow a single mother who works as a 911 call center operator and takes a call from a firefighter who becomes injured while battling a blaze. Afterward, events in their lives keep bringing them together until they finally give in to their mutual attraction to each other. Sweeney has spent two decades playing Sami Brady in the longrunning NBC sudser "Days of our Lives." Since 2007, she has managed to balance those duties with her other big role as the host of the peacock network's hit prime-time reality series "The Biggest Loser." Vaughan actually left the daytime airwaves in 2009 after starring as Lucky Spencer in "General Hospital" since 2003. Before that, he did a short stint on "The Young and the Restless" as Diego Guttierez. After Vaughan left "GH," he dabbled in prime-time guest work, with spots on "90210," "The Closer" and "GCB."

Interestingly, there are rumors currently circulating in the soap opera world that Vaughan has signed on to take over the role of Eric Brady in "Days of our Lives," but NBC has not yet confirmed this news. If it turns out to be true, he'll be playing the part of Sami Brady's twin brother. The character was last portrayed by "Supernatural" star Jensen Ackles, who left the sudser in 2000. "Two In," which was written by Karen Struck and Jim Buck, is being directed by Ernie Barbarash. SINGING FOR CW: Another Canadian music sensation is crossing over to television work. After topping the charts with a hit single, Carly Rae Jepsen will perform in the season premiere of a hit CW series. The Hollywood Reporter recently announced that the British Columbia native, who is best known for her single "Call Me Maybe," will perform one of her tracks on the Oct. 8 episode of "90210." She follows in the footsteps of fellow Canuck Justin Bieber, who tried
