Swingin' summer

Shaking it up: New 'Dance' format features two-hour episodes Andrew Warren TV Media

im the lights, crank up the music and move to the rhythm. It's that time of year again, when dance fans across the nation pull out their dancing shoes and get ready for another exciting season of "So You Think You Can Dance." The spotlight shone on this year's new batch of hopefuls starting with last week's premiere. The previous eight seasons have witnessed thousands of aspiring dancers getting their hopes dashed on the dance floor before a panel of judges, while a few have had their dreams come true. The ninth season promises to serve up more of the same. In a format that's similar to the enormously popular singing competition show "American Idol," auditions have been held in cities across the country, from Los Angeles in the west to Atlanta in the east. Auditions for "Dance" were also held in Salt Lake City, Dallas, and New York City. This week's episode -- airing Wednesday, May 30, on Fox -- wraps up the audition component of the season. The last week's premiere aired on Thursday, but the series settles into its regular Wednesday time-slot now that "American Idol" has wrapped up. In what's become fairly standard in the reality format, viewers and

judges are treated to a parade of dancers -- some who have the skills, and some who seem to have been born with two left feet. As always, the panel of judges is on hand to offer sparse praise and biting critique of the hopefuls. "They need a little more than just a passion to do it; they've got to have something called talent," said series creator and executive producer Nigel Lythgoe in an interview with Oprah.com. Lythgoe also sits behind the judges table as one of the experts who makes the final decision of whether or not a contestant continues to the next level. The ninth season of "Dance" will be ushering in what could be the biggest shakeup to the show's format since the second season. Up until now, the show aired two weekly episodes -- one for performances and one for results. In the first episode, the young men and women would take to the dance floor, hopefully dazzling viewers and judges alike as they dipped, twirled, and leaped across the stage. It was their time to impress, as the judges are critical, and Lythgoe especially has a reputation for demanding perfection. After the judges made their calls on the best and worst performances, it was then up to the viewers to vote for their favorites. The results of the phone-in polls were revealed during the next evening's show. In January, it was announced that the traditional second episode of the 256> /6>

week, in which hopes were dashed when the voting results from the previous night were revealed, would not be returning for this season. Instead, the single, two-hour weekly episode is being reworked to incorporate both the performances and the voting results. Details are still being ironed out, but Lythgoe has hinted at a few different ideas that are being bounced around. In an interview with "Dance Informa" magazine, he mentioned that the new format would likely allow dancers to perform at the beginning, then the results of the previous week's vote would be announced. The bottom three couples would then dance for their survival, and it would be up to the judges to make the final call. These details are not, however, set in stone, and things can change quickly in the industry. Despite this rather significant change, longtime fans shouldn't worry that the show will be too different for their tastes. The familiar face of Cat Deeley returns to her hosting duties, a role she's gracefully filled since the second season. At the judges table, Lythgoe returns to his seat, and ballroom dance champion Mary Murphy returns as well. Murphy has been a resident judge for several seasons, but she missed a season to recover from thyroid cancer. As in previous seasons, weekly guest judges will join the two permanent seats in critiquing the performances. The winner last season was fanfavorite Melanie Moore, the shorthaired dancer from Marietta, Ga.,

who started generating buzz almost from the moment she first stepped onto the dance floor. This diva of dance effortlessly mastered every style of dance in the competition, and it paid off for her: she ended up winning the competition with a whopping 47 per cent of the vote, easily edging out the other three finalists. Moore, who began dancing when she was only two years old, wowed both the judges and audiences with her chameleon-like ability to master

virtually any dance style, despite being trained mainly in the contemporary style. Indeed, having the ability to adapt to various dance styles is probably the not-so-secret weapon to advancing in the competition. After being selected by the judges to become finalists (typically a top 20, although this format has been toyed with in the past), the contestants are split into male/female pairs. Each week, the dance partners are assigned a style of dance and given minimal time to master it before they're thrust onstage in front of the judges and TV cameras.

The new big fish

Ryan Seacrest inks deal with NBC Sheila Busteed TV Media THE NEW BIG FISH: It appears that the recent passing of television titan Dick Clark has opened the door to what may in the future be dubbed "The Seacrest Era." NBCUniversal recently announced it has signed a two-year deal with Ryan Seacrest, the industry's new golden boy among entertainment hosts. This contract will see Seacrest's presence expand as he embraces new responsibilities with NBC and E! Entertainment Television on various platforms. He'll be lending his charisma and bright smile to such things as news reports, sports coverage and more entertainment events. "I am humbled to have the confidence of Steve Burke, Ted Harbert, Bonnie Hammer and many others within the NBCUniversal family, to strategically extend my relationship to encompass NBC programming," said Seacrest. "I'm especially looking forward to working with all the stellar on-air talents and producing executives involved in NBC's news, entertainment and sports divisions, and I'm eager and excited to take on this broader new role." His plate will be very full as he works as a special correspondent for NBC News' "Today," as well as contributing to NBC prime-time news programs. He'll also be a part of NBC's team covering the Olympics, starting with this year's Summer Games in London. He'll continue his work as the managing editor of E! News, but his role will expand there as well. He will follow in the footsteps of iconic TV journalists like Barbara Walters and Katie Couric by producing high-profile celebrity interviews to air as specials. These new gigs are on top of the

professional responsibilities he's already shouldering, including his hosting duties for Fox's "American Idol" and ABC's "Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve With Ryan Seacrest." He also still hosts his radio show, "On Air With Ryan Seacrest," and runs his own production company, Ryan Seacrest Productions. SURREAL TALK: In a unique twist, specialty channel IFC is turning a popular podcast into a full-blown TV talk show. However, considering the big-name talent it was already attracting, and the fact that its popularity has already spun the podcast into a radio show, this move was bound to happen sooner or later. Hosted by Scott Aukerman, "Comedy Bang Bang" is being modeled after traditional late-night talk shows and will premiere on Friday, June 8. The inaugural 30-minute episode will feature popular comic actor Zach Galifianakis (2009's "The Hangover," 2010's "Due Date") as the main guest. Aukerman will also welcome Danny Mahoney, Will Forte, Andy Daly, Thomas Lennon and Gillian Jacobs. Subsequent installments in the 10episode series will include Elizabeth Banks (2012's "The Hunger Games"), Jon Hamm ("Mad Men"), Michael Cera (2007's "Juno"), Amy Poehler ("Parks and Recreation"), Ed Helms ("The Office"), Paul Rudd (2008's "Role Models"), musician Weird Al Yankovic, Tenacious D's Jack Black and Kyle Gass, Topher Grace ("That '70s Show") and Jon Heder (2004's "Napoleon Dynamite"), among others. When it was still operating as just a radio show, "Comedy Bang Bang" attracted such stars as Aziz Ansari, Patton Oswalt, Ben Stiller and David Cross. Additionally, Yankovic, Galifianakis, Cera and Hamm were guests on the radio show, so their participation in the new TV program will serve

Ryan Seacrest has signed a new agreement with NBC as return engagements. The quirky show will depart from the traditional celebrity interview format by including character cameos, games, dream sequence detours, talking set pieces, sketches and more. This will allow it to fit in nicely with IFC's slogan -- "Always On. Slightly Off." -- as well as the network's programming tastes. Aukerman previously wrote and performed in HBO's "Mr. Show With Bob and David." More recently, he cocreated "Between Two Ferns With Zach Galifianakis," an interview series on the Funny or Die video website. CRIME CHOPPER: A popular comic that first debuted on Facebook will soon become a staple in Fox's new Animation Domination programming block. Started by brothers Ethan and Malachai Nicolle, "Axe Cop" will be in good company on the network known for its adult cartoon fare when it premieres in its Saturday evening slot next year. The network has so far ordered six 15-minute episodes. "'Axe Cop' is one of the most

"I've hoped someone would adapt 'Axe Cop' for television for years and couldn't be happier that we get to be that someone. 'Axe Cop' has all the makings of an iconic animated series and it will help set the tone for F ox's new late-prime Saturday animation lineup." Ethan Nicolle was only 29 years old when the first "Axe Cop" comics were drawn over his Christmas holiday in 2009 and then posted on Facebook on Jan. 25, 2010. However, the concept actually originated with Malachai, who was only five years old at the time. Described by his older brother as a "boy genius," Malachai comes up with the ideas for the stories while Ethan puts them all down on paper.
