Fame, fortune, music Welcome to 'Nashville': New drama pulls back the curtain on Music City

By Andrew Warren TV Media here's a lot to love about the south -- there's that legendary hospitality and, of course, it's home to some good ol' country music.

And there's one city that's synonymous with that great genre of music.

ABC's "Nashville," an exciting new drama that is airing on Wednesday nights, promises to pull back the curtains on Music City's best known and most iconic industry.

"Nashville" tells a tale that's

probably as old as the music industry itself. One reigning queen's star is fading while another, younger singer's is rising, and the rivalry that's sparked between them is mirrored by other events in their lives. But that's not the only story this drama's telling.

Nashville has earned the name Music City for a reason, and "Nashville" deals with all of the power struggles that come about when there's fame and fortune on the line.

It may be an old tale, but that doesn't mean that this story is stale.

spot in the "Most Exciting New Series" category at the "Critics Choice Television Awards." So clearly some of the Nashville magic that's rubbed off on so many Music City stars has worked its way into the show, too.

Leading the cast is Connie Britton as country music legend Rayna Jaymes. Jaymes is a country music superstar. This Queen of Country's spent two decades dominating the top of the charts, and her songs have been played and sung all across America.

Lately, though, trouble's been brewing.

Her latest album and tour have both struggled -- and, well, her husband is a bit of a dead beat.

The character Jaymes is influenced by country music legends Loretta Lynn, Patsy Cline and Kitty Wells, all legends in country music. Britton's no slouch herself: the stunning actress has been nominated for three Emmy awards (twice for "Friday Night Lights," once for "American Horror Story") and also played roles in such critically acclaimed shows as "24," "The West Wing" and "Spin City."

Unfortunately for the aging songstress, nature abhors a vacuum.

Starring next to Britton is Hayden Panettiere as the up-and-coming Juliette Barnes. Barnes has only been in Nashville for three years, but in that short time she's already had two soldout tours and seen more than 20 million downloads of her hit tracks.

The ambitious young star wants more, though, and Jaymes is sitting right in her crosshairs.

Panettiere began acting in commercials when she was only 11 months old, so she's certainly no newcomer to the TV screen. She's starred in "Guiding Light," "One Life to Live"

Powers Boothe stars as Lamar Wyatt in "Nashville" and, of course, NBC's "Heroes," but she hasn't stopped at the small screen.

Her film credits are extensive, among them starring roles in "Remember the Titans" (2000), "Joe Somebody" (2001) and "The Dust Factory" (2004).

Alongside these two leading ladies is an incredibly strong supporting cast.

At Jaymes' side is her songwriter, bandleader and onetime lover Deacon Claybourne. In the role is Charles "Chip" Esten, whose face is probably most recognizable as a frequent guest on the improv comedy show "Whose Line Is It Anyway?" But to assume that that's all he's known for would be to ignore his vast body of work. Esten's had recurring roles on "ER" and "The Office," but perhaps his biggest

accomplishment was when he performed for Queen Elizabeth and, later, President George H.W. Bush while portraying Buddy Holly in the hit musical "Buddy."

Also in Jaymes' life are her ambitious but down-on-his-luck husband Teddy Conrad (Eric Close) and industrialist father Lamar Wyatt (Powers Boothe). Conrad's had mixed success in business and has pretty much earned himself a reputation as Mr. Rayna Jaymes, but with the urging of his powerful, controlling father-inlaw, he's ready to take a gamble and hit the reset button.

Close is notable for his longtime roles in "Without a Trace" and "Now and Again," while Boothe is probably best known for his role as the president on "24" and his Emmywinning performance in "Guyana Tragedy: The Story of Jim Jones."

And Jaymes and Barnes aren't the only acts in town. The drama also follows young hopefuls Scarlett O'Connor (Clare Bowen, 2010's "The Clinic"), Gunnar Scott (Sam Palladio, Showtime's "Episodes") and Avery Barkley (Jonathan Jackson, "General Hospital"). Robert Wisdom (HBO's "The Wire") rounds out the cast as conflicted metro councilor Coleman Carlisle.

Q: Has anyone ever made a biographical movie about Chet Baker? He’s one of my favorite musicians, and it seems like his life would make a good story.

A: A handsome, talented young musician rises to fame, loses it while battling a drug addiction, then has a comeback years later before dying mysteriously outside an Amsterdam hotel — that is the kind of story Hollywood loves to tell. It just hasn’t gotten around to telling Baker’s yet.

Indeed, the problem may be that Hollywood’s been telling that story too often — at least too often for Josh Hartnett’s taste.

Hartnett, a popular young film star who bears a fair resemblance to Baker, had hoped to play the role in 2008. He was working on a biopic, tentatively called “The Prince of Cool,” but said he and the producers “couldn’t see eye to eye.”

In an interview with MTV.com, he said the producers wanted to rush it to capitalize on the success of recently released musical biopics “Ray” (the Oscar-winning 2004 film about Ray Charles) and “Walk the Line” (the 2005 Johnny Cash biography).

“They just wanted to bang something out,” he lamented. “They didn’t want to make something that was new.”

Of course, if you can do without the Hollywood budget and storytelling structure, you could always watch the 1988 documentary “Let’s Get Lost,” which told Baker’s story through interviews with the man himself and those close to him.

It was nominated for the bestdocumentary Oscar that year (but lost to the Second World War doc “Hotel Terminus”), and won several other awards.

That movie’s release was timely in its own way as well. Filmmaker Bruce Weber had already finished his Baker interviews but was still working on the film when Baker died in 1988.

Oscar giggity gold Academy chooses MacFarlane as ceremony's host

OSCAR GIGGITY GOLD: In an attempt to seem fresh and relevant to a younger generation, Academy Awards organizers may just be flirting with controversy this year.

Seth MacFarlane, the man behind the hit comedy flick "Ted" as well as Fox's "Family Guy," will bring his boundarypushing comedic style to the Oscar stage as the host of the 85th Academy Awards. The ceremony is scheduled to broadcast live on ABC from the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on Sunday, Feb. 24.

"It's truly an overwhelming privilege to be asked to host the Oscars," said MacFarlane. "My thoughts upon hearing the news were: One, I will do my utmost to live up to the high standards set forth by my predecessors; and two, I hope they don't find out I hosted the Charlie Sheen Roast."

Other than hosting Comedy Central's "Roast of Charlie Sheen" in 2011, as well as its previous specials poking fun at Donald Trump and David Hasselhoff, MacFarlane brings very little hosting experience to such a high-profile stage like the Oscars.

His live-action comedy chops were tested last month when he hosted the season premiere of "Saturday Night Live." Other than that, he appeared as a presenter at the 64th Primetime Emmy Awards, which also aired last month. That about sums it up.

Yet, telecast producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron are excited to have such a wellknown and young talent as the face of the ceremony this time around. "His performing skills blend perfectly with our ideas for making the show entertaining and fresh," they said in a joint statement.

However, MacFarlane will still have to follow the rules that go along with a live prime-time broadcast. While a slip may amuse his fans, it would undoubtedly earn the wrath of watchdog organizations like Parents Television Council, which has frequently criticized his television shows.

COACHING CHANGES: NBC's "The Voice" is making changes for the future, just like competitors "American Idol" and "The X Factor." The network recently announced that not only will the show welcome two new celebrity coaches for the next cycle, it has also been renewed for another cycle after that one.

In order to offset the losses of Christina Aguilera and Cee Lo Green, who will take Season 4 off to pursue their own projects, show runners have hired R&B heartthrob Usher and Latin pop queen Shakira as their replacements. Current coaches Adam Levine and Blake Shelton will continue working on the program in the fourth cycle.

Aguilera is taking time off the TV gig to promote her new studio album, while Green will be busy developing a scripted series for NBC inspired by his life, on top of working on new music.

"I am so proud of being a part of the show from the beginning," said Aguilera, "[but] I am a singer and performer first and I am excited to get back to that love. Since this year NBC and 'The Voice' have decided to tape back-to-back seasons, requiring a full year commitment, it is important for me to take Season 4 off, allowing me to support my music that my fans have been waiting for." Her new album, called "Lotus," hits stores on Nov. 13.

successful individuals such as Richard Branson, will.i.am, Russell Peters and Mario Batali around for a day to see what it's like to live their demanding lives.

This is the second new show that CNN has picked up that falls within the genre. It was previously announced that Anthony Bourdain would end his hit Travel Channel show "No Reservations" to work on a new program for CNN.
