I

t’s been a rough year for network comedies.

Fan favorites “30 Rockâ€? and “The OfďŹ ceâ€? will come to an end this spring after seven and nine seasons, respectively. The axe has also fallen on some once-promising freshman comedies: NBC’s “Animal Practiceâ€? was canceled in October, less than a month after it premiered, while “Partnersâ€? (CBS) was canned in November, and “Ben and Kateâ€?

(Fox) said goodbye in January.

Despite this, half-hour comedies are a prime-time staple and so many ďŹ nales and cancelations just means more room for new shows as each network rolls out what they hope will be the next big thing.

ABC was not spared its competitors’ grief in the comedy arena with a few losses of its own. But the network is ready to jump back into the game with a brand new sitcom -- “How to Live With Your Parents (For the Rest of Your Life)� premieres Wednesday, April 3, and ABC hopes it may be that “next big thing� everyone is looking for. With a cast chock-full of television veterans, “How to Live with Your Parents� certainly looks promising.

Sarah Chalke headlines the show as Polly, a single mother who, along with her daughter, Natalie, returns to live with her parents indeďŹ nitely.

Polly is an uptight, worry-wart type who clashes with her mom and laid-back dad. Throw in a loafer of an ex-husband hovering around Polly’s periphery and you have a household of hijinks and, hopefully, comedy gold.

Chalke will be a very familiar face to most viewers as she’s been an almost constant presence on network television since she was 17 years old. This will also be a homecoming of sorts, as her ďŹ rst major role was a four-season stint as Becky Connor, the eldest of the two Connor sisters on the hit series “Roseanne,â€? which aired on ABC from 1988 to 1997. In 2001, she appeared again on prime-time television as the eccentric-but-endearing Dr. Elliot Reid on the Emmy award-winning “Scrubs,â€? which began on NBC but had its last two seasons air on ABC. While working on “Scrubs,â€? Chalke also found the time to guest star on another CBS gem “How I Met Your Mother,â€? playing the role of Stella, a woman with whom Ted has an ill-fated love affair. When “Scrubsâ€? ended in 2010, Chalke wasn’t gone for long. She was back just a season later with the debut of the short-lived “Mad Love,â€? again on CBS. From there, it was back home to ABC for

a recurring role on “Cougar Town,� and it’s where she remains for “How to Live with Your Parents.�

The titular parents are equally familiar to television fans. Elizabeth Perkins steps up as Polly’s mother, Elaine, a slightly unhinged woman who is leery of how her new housemates will affect her lifestyle.

Perkins began her successful career in the 1980s, landing her ďŹ rst role in the Demi Moore/ Rob Lowe ick “About Last Nightâ€? (1986). She went on to play many memorable supporting roles, including Tom Hanks’ love interest in “Bigâ€? (1988), Wilma to John Goodman’s Fred in “The Flintstonesâ€? (1994), and mother of the precocious young Susan in “Miracle on 34th Streetâ€? (1994).

Perkins made the leap to the small screen in 2005, starting a ďŹ ve-season run as a scheming, manipulative housewife on the hit Showtime series “Weeds.â€?

In the role of Polly’s father is Brad Garrett, a man with face and voice recognized by millions. Most will know him as Ray’s no-nonsense cop brother Robert Barone from “Everybody Loves Raymond,â€? a huge hit for CBS that ran nine seasons from 1996 to 2005. Garrett is no stranger to the big screen, either. He’s had roles in a number of popular ďŹ lms over the years, including “The Suicide Kingsâ€?

Lowdownâ€? (1999), and the family comedy “The PaciďŹ erâ€? (2005). But it’s his voice that has brought him the most success. Deep, sonorous and a little goofy, Garrett’s voice has landed him roles in many poplar animated ďŹ lms, such as “Casperâ€? (1995), “A Bug’s Lifeâ€?

(1998), “Finding Nemoâ€? (2003) and “Ratatouilleâ€? (2007). Incidentally, Perkins also lent her voice to “Finding Nemo,â€? but just a few lines: she played Nemo’s mom, who is only in the ďŹ rst scene of the movie.

Rounding out the cast of “How to Live with Your Parentsâ€? are two relative newcomers. Rachel Eggleston, who plays Polly’s daughter, Natalie, has already racked up some impressive screen time in only two years of acting work. She’s been seen in episodes of “The Mentalist,â€? Austin & Ally,â€? “JustiďŹ edâ€? and “House,â€? among other shows, and “How to Live with Your Parentsâ€? will be her ďŹ rst time as a series regular. Playing Natalie’s dad -- and Polly’s incompetent but affable ex-husband -- is comedian Jon Dore. Dore is an experienced stand-up comic who has guest starred on “How I Met Your Motherâ€? and appeared multiple times on the late-night “Conan.â€?

Even Claudia Lonow, the show’s creator, has spent her share of time in front of the camera: she was a series regular on the Emmy-winning series “Knott’s Landing� from 1979 to 1984.

Q: Is “Major Crimes” coming back to TV? A: Fans will have to wait a while yet, but “Major Crimes” star Mary McDonnell promises a big payoff when it returns in the summer.

The spinoff of “The Closer,” which aired Monday nights this past summer and fall, left nothing for TNT to desire in the ratings department -- it finished its debut season as cable’s most-watched new show.

Its series premiere drew in 9.5 million viewers, making it the mostwatched series launch in basic cable history. However, it got a boost there from its predecessor -- “The Closer’s” series finale aired as its lead-in, and drew 11.2 million pairs of eyes.

All this led TNT boss Michael Wright to renew “Major Crimes” in September, calling it “an incredibly entertaining show that not only honors the spirit of ‘The Closer,’ but also stands alone with its own voice and spirit.”

In an interview with TVLine.com, McDonnell described the renewal as a “tremendous relief” for her and the 250-plus people who work on the show. She also said that the way the first season ended frees them up to expand the plot even further in the new one.

“It allows us to complete an arc so that when we begin Season 2, there is the opportunity to get into some very deep, deep crimes.”

TNT hasn’t offered anything more precise than “summer” for the show’s return. The first season premiered in August, however that seems to have been done to allow it to coincide with “The Closer’s” finale. It seems more likely that the second season will get moved up to June or July, to premiere along with most of the network’s other summer shows.

Two new faces join ‘America’s Got Talent’ Andrew Warren TV Media AMERICA’S GOT KLUM: If three’s a crowd, as they say, what does that make four?

In a first for the series, this summer’s eighth season of NBC’s hit talent show “America’s Got Talent” will have four celebrity judges giving their often-biting critiques of the hopefuls’ performances.

Following months of uncertainty over the fate of longtime judge Sharon Osbourne (“The Osbournes”), who’s been with the program since its second season, it’s been recently announced that her seat will be filled by two other talented icons. When the show premieres this summer, fans will find supermodel Heidi Klum and former Spice Girl Melanie Brown behind the judges table.

Klum will probably be most familiar to TV audiences for her role as the host of the fashion designer competition “Project Runway,” a show on which she’s also an executive producer. To think that this beauty’s skills end there would be a mistake, though. This entrepreneur also has her own brand of maternity fashions, a line of clothing for babies and a jewelry collection.

She’s even acted in several feature films and TV shows, such as “Ella Enchanted” (2004) and “Blowdry” (2001).

“I love the surprise element of the show and not knowing what we’ll see next,” said Klum of her upcoming gig. “I’m also looking forward to spending time with my fellow judges -- Howard Stern, Howie Mandel, and Mel B!” The other new face at the table, Melanie Brown (better known these days as Mel B), has been seeing her solo career take off since she burst onto the scene as Scary Spice, one of the five performers that made up the British band the Spice Girls.

to fill with the departure of the popular Osbourne, but fans can be assured that there won’t be any less “talent” up on stage.

COUTURE COMES HOME: It’s looking like things are about to get a little bit more rough over on Spike.

The network, which features original programming aimed squarely at younger men, has signed a multi-year contract with the legendary mixed martial arts fighter Randy Couture. The fighting professional landed his first starring role on Spike back in 2005 with “The Ultimate Fighter,” and now he’s returning to the network with several new projects to call his own.

It won’t be the athlete’s first foray onto the screen -- far from it. Besides “Ultimate Fighter,” this versatile fighter’s also proven his acting chops in “The Expendables” (2010), “The Expendables 2” (2012) and “The Scorpion King 2” (2008), among other films.

And Couture isn’t the only big name attached to these launches.

Acclaimed producers Elise Doganieri and Bertram van Munster, of “Amazing Race” fame, are signed on to serve as executive producers of “Fight Master: Bellator MMA.” In the program, Couture will team up with other legends from the popular sport to act as trainers and mentors for teams of up-and-coming fighters as the neophytes learn from the best and compete for a $100,000 cash prize.

The other announced project

Heidi Klum joins America Got Talent will follow Couture as he puts to use the experience he’s gained from owning his own successful chain of MMA gyms. With the sport surging in popularity in recent years, gyms specializing in it have been popping up everywhere, but not all of them are thriving. In “MMA Rescue,” the wrestler will take that experience and put it to work helping out these struggling gyms.

The Brothers are back: The duo that brought us Second World War epics “Band of Brothers” and “The Pacific” are back together, and this time they’re looking to the skies.

Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg are once again teaming up with HBO to develop an epic miniseries set during the global conflict. As

If the unnamed project is anything like its predecessors, it won’t be stingy on the production costs. 2001’s “Band of Brothers’” 10 episodes reportedly cost $125 million to make, and “The Pacific” topped even that whopping sum with a price tag of $200 million. It’s a lot of money, but it’s paid off come awards season, with the two shows bringing home 14 Emmys between them.

Hanks and Spielberg have a history of success when working together. Their 1998 film “Saving Private Ryan,” also set during the Second World War, won five Academy Awards and solidified Hanks’ position as one of the world’s top actors. Although he’s definitely best known for his acting roles, Hanks is also a successful producer: his company, Playtone Productions, is on board for the new HBO series.
