hese days, it seems like you can’t turn on the television without seeing a panel of celebrity judges critiquing some kind of performance.

America is in love with network talent shows, a genre in large part made popular by an enigmatic Brit who goes out of his way to be unlikable: Simon Cowell. Season 3 of Cowell’s current reality talent series, “The X Factor,� kicks off Wednesday, Sept. 11, on Fox. Considering the show is just beginning its third season, there have been a lot of changes to “The X Factor� since its inception. The auditions process, for example, is always changing just a little. As is usual for this type of show, judges travel from city to city, where thousands of people are waiting to audition for them but “The X Factor� doesn’t stop

there. Sending out smaller crews to audition those who could not make the big city auditions means just about everyone gets a fair shake.

During the ďŹ rst season, Cowell, who also wears the hat of executive producer, even announced that ‚ÄÎ for one week only ‚ÄÎ they were accepting applications in the form of YouTube videos. “You have to be competitive. You have to make changes,â€? Cowell said when asked about various shakeups within the show. With a team so obviously dedicated to ďŹ nding talent in every nook and cranny of America, who knows what could happen with this year’s tryouts.

The ďŹ rst few episodes of the season focus on this often surprising (and sometimes painful) audition process, which highlights some of the best, worst and most shocking performances of the preliminary stages of the competition. As the hopefuls make it through the vari-

ous rounds of elimination, they are divided into four categories: Boys (males ages 12 to 25), Girls (females ages 12 to 25), Over 25s and Groups.

Each of these categories will be mentored by one of the celebrity judges. Known for his harsh critiques, Cowell has had the daunting task of stacking his panel with judges that will balance him out. Some teams have worked out better than others.

The judging panel has been subject to many of the show’s changes in fact, the only judge from the ďŹ rst season to have made it to the third is Cowell himself. Asked about the reasons behind these changes, Cowell said that ďŹ nding the right chemistry is “like having a dinner party. You invite people for dinner ‚ and sometimes it’s fun and sometimes it’s not as fun as you thought it was going to be.â€?

Obviously, his ďŹ rst two “dinner partiesâ€? weren’t everything he hoped they’d be, so Cowell has mixed things up from season to season. In the show’s freshman year, Cowell was joined by Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger, producer L.A. Reid and former “American Idolâ€? panelmate Paula Abdul. When the show returned for Season 2, both of the female judges had been replaced. Diva Britney Spears and up-and-comer Demi Lovato now had seats at the table.

At the close of Season 2, Cowell felt unsatisďŹ ed: “It was more of a feeling it was similar to what everyone else was doing and I had this impatience to get on to Season 3 so I

could do what I wanted to do.�

With Season 3 right around the corner, it seems that Cowell has done just that. Faces have changed once again, and this time the Brit has a lot more ladies to contend with. Fan favorite Lovato returns for her second year by Cowell’s side, while Spanish songstress Paulina Rubio and Destiny’s Child alum Kelly Rowland ďŹ ll the vacated seats left by Spears and Reid. “It’s a girl’s world in the music industry right now,â€? said Cowell, and he couldn’t be more excited about the changes, adding:

Cowell has nothing but praise for this year’s judges. The cool, composed Kelly, the spirited, droll Demi and the ďŹ ery, risible Rubio should offset Cowell’s intimidating presence, not to mention open up the show to an untapped demographic.

Addressing the addition of Rubio to the roster, Cowell said: “I always felt that the Spanish market was really important. I would love some Spanish artists ‚ÄÎ or one great Spanish artist ‚ÄÎ for the label, and Paulina has been this beacon and they’re all attracted to her.â€?

Q: Is is true that Jackie Chan is a pop star in Asia?

A: Though Jackie Chan is certainly a celebrity in North America, it’s hard to grasp just how popular he is in Asia.

So popular, in fact, that despite releasing multiple films every year, his fans were still hungry for more. So he moved to music.

Pursuing a multi-field artistic career actually lines up with Chan’s background. His education came not from a general elementary school or an acting conservatory, but from the Hong Kong-China Opera Institute, a small private school that taught its students the many skills involved in Chinese opera. These skills included singing and acting, but also acrobatics, martial arts and dance.

So, having attained success in the rest of those skills (provided you take a pretty loose definition of “dance”), he returned to singing. He has released more than 20 albums, in multiple languages, and sold millions of copies.

His musical output, like his screen output, has been prolific. He debuted as a singer in 1984, releasing two different albums ‚ “Thank You” and “Love Me.” His productive peak came in 1988, when he released four albums (though two were labeled “best of” impressive on its own after a musical career of just four years).

Much of his musical success has been directly tied to his acting success he has performed the themes and other songs for many of his films, including Hong Kong hits such as “Police Story 3” (1992) and “Drunken Master 2” (1994), as well as songs in his American films such as “The Spy Next Door” (2010) and “Rush Hour 3” (2007).

He had a huge hit with the official song of the 2008 Beijing Olympics, “We Are Ready,” released a year before the Games. That song also led up to the less-inspirationally titled “Official Album for the Beijing 2008 Olympics‚ Jackie Chan’s Version,” a whole album of songs related to the event.

Sandra Oh to exit ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Andrew Warren TV Media Going, going, gone: A beloved member of the Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital is taking her leave.

The beloved Sandra Oh, who’s been with “Grey’s Anatomy” through all nine of its seasons, has announced that the upcoming 10th season of the highly successful medical drama will be her last.

“Creatively, I really feel like I gave it my all, and I feel ready to let her go,” Oh told “The Hollywood Reporter” when news of her decision became public.

The Canadian actress has played Dr. Cristina Yang since the show premiered back in 2005, and quickly became a fan favorite. Her stellar acting earned her a well-deserved Golden Globe award in 2006.

As of yet, there’s no word on just how the star’s exit will be handled on the screen. What isn’t in doubt, though, is that Oh won’t have any trouble finding more work. The 42-year-old actress has starred in several big-screen successes, including “Sideways” (2004) and “Under the Tuscan Sun” (2003).

“Grey’s Anatomy” fans will no doubt be keeping their eyes on a few other members of the cast whose contracts are ending after the 10th season. Patrick Dempsey (“Made of Honor,” 2008), Chandra Wilson (“Strangers With Candy,” 2005), Justin Chambers (“The Zodiac,” 2005), James Pickens Jr. (“Traffic,” 2000) and Ellen Pompeo (“Daredevil,” 2003) are all coming up for contract negotiations.

Despite Oh’s departure, it’s a pretty safe bet that “Grey’s Anatomy” isn’t going the way of the dodo any time soon. It remains one of the highest-rated shows on television, and ABC affirmed its commitment to the program in a public statement. The 10th season ‚Oh’s last ‚ premieres on ABC Thursday, Sept.

Welcome home: Visitors to Haven may find the town’s population a bit bigger these days.

“Haven” is one of Syfy’s most popular shows. It earned the distinction of being the most popular cable drama during its time-slot last season, and a few more actors have joined the cast for the upcoming fourth season. Both Emma Lahana (“Hellcats”) and Christian Camargo (“Dexter”) have come on board the drama, while Colin Ferguson (“Eureka”) has signed on to be a recurring guest star throughout the season.

Lahana joins the cast as Jennifer Mason, a unique young woman who starts hearing voices in her head. Camargo has been cast as Wade Crocker, the successful half-brother of Duke Crocker (Eric Balfour, “24”). Meanwhile, Ferguson’s temporarily hanging up his sheriff’s badge as he leaves the set of “Eureka,” another Syfy hit.

In “Haven” he’ll play a mysterious stranger in a season-long plot arc.

“Haven” is just one of the successful screen adaptations of author Stephen King’s works. Based on the novella “The Colorado Kid,” “Haven” tells the story of a mysterious town in Maine, as seen through the eyes of former FBI agent Audrey

Parker (Emily Rose).

Truly, there are few authors with the longevity of King. His first novel, “Carrie,” was adapted into a big screen hit way back in 1976, and a remake of the film will be released this October. Earlier this summer “Under the Dome,” a TV series based on King’s novel of the same name, premiered on CBS to critical acclaim, and was recently renewed for a second season.

Clearly, there’s something audiences love about King’s work, whether it’s in print or on screen, and “Haven” is no exception. The fourth season ‚ complete with new stars ‚ gets underway this October.

The upcoming fourth season of CBS’s “Hawaii Five-0” is mixing things up with a move to a new night and a whale-sized number of guest stars lined up. The season premiere kicks things off on the show’s new night on Friday, Sept.

With loads of guest stars lined up and a move to a new night, it seems that, despite its popularity, “Hawaii Five-0” isn’t afraid to mix things up a bit. Season 4 premieres the evening of Sept. 27.
