Oz-some performance NBC continues its holiday tradition with ‘The Wiz Live!’

here does the time go? It seems like only yesterday Allison Williams (“Girls”) was sporting a boyish wig and soaring across the stage in the title role of “Peter Pan Live!” alongside a dancing Christopher Walken (“Catch Me If You Can,” 2002) as Captain Hook.

The holidays have nearly circled back again, however, and NBC is carrying on its newfound tradition of airing a live musical production for TV audiences as Christmas approaches.

This year, the network is bringing the funk with “The Wiz Live,” a soul/R&B adaptation of L. Frank Baum’s “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” with a modern spin and an all-black cast.

“The Wiz Live!” airs Thursday, Dec. 3, on NBC. The 1975 production of “The Wiz” was a huge hit on Broadway.

The show took home seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Choreography and Best Original Score.

It in turn spawned a film adaptation released in 1978 starring Diana Ross (“Lady Sings the Blues,” 1972), Michael Jackson (“This Is It,” 2009) and Richard Pryor (“Silver Streak,” 1976), which has become a cult classic.

The production is an excellent choice on NBC’s part to get viewers to tune in to a live show, particu-

larly after last year’s mixed reviews of “Peter Pan Live!” While “Pan” drew more than nine million viewers, making it the most-watched program of the night on the major networks, that’s only about half the number of people who tuned in for its predecessor, “The Sound of Music Live!” Some critics didn’t buy Williams’ whimsy as the boy who wouldn’t grow up, panning the show as long and lifeless. Others, however, praised the performers and the production as a whole, and the live format gives audiences something decidedly different in prime-time television.

In any case, the duo responsible for producing all three “Live!” shows Craig Zadan and Neil Meron is taking no chances this time around. For one thing, the team has landed a story that’s universally loved who can’t get on board with the Kansas farm girl who learns the importance of home and family, all while wearing some flashy pumps (with nary a complaint about blisters or arch support)? Or her goofy, big-hearted new pals who come to see the value in themselves through traits they thought they were missing, but in fact had all along? It’s good stuff.

A strong story warrants a strong cast, and Zadan and Meron have nabbed themselves a plum one. Aside from newcomer Shanice Williams, who was handpicked over hundreds of

hopefuls for the role of Dorothy in an open call, the cast is heavy with star power.

The first woman to take the role of the titular “Wiz” is none other than Queen Latifah, who’s already worked with Zadan and Meron in the big-screen adaptations of “Chicago” (2002) and “Hairspray” (2007) and the Lifetime version of “Steel Magnolias” (2012).

“We realized then that she could do everything,” Zadan told Variety of his and Meron’s first meeting with Latifah at the “Chicago” casting. “She was a first-rate actress, singer and dancer. She has a star quality that lights up the screen.”

Fellow R&B icon and nine-time Grammy winner Mary J. Blige (“Rock of Ages,” 2012) plays Evillene, the Wicked Witch of the West, while rising small-screen stars Amber Riley (“Glee”) and Uzo Aduba (“Orange Is the New Black”) play Addaperle, the Good Witch of the North, and Glinda, the Good Witch of the South, respectively.

Elijah Kelley, who starred with Latifah in “Hairspray,” plays the Scarecrow, alongside R&B singer Ne-Yo (“Stomp the Yard,” 2007) as the Tin Man and funny-guy David Alan Grier (“In Living Color”) as the Cowardly Lion.

Stephanie Mills, the original Dorothy in “The Wiz” on Broadway, is returning to the show to play Auntie Em, which was a major score for Zadan and Meron.

remembers the show remembers Stephanie Mills as Dorothy,” Zadan said in a Broadway World interview.

“Having her be part of this show’s company is both nostalgic and thrilling.”

As for the new Dorothy, Williams may not yet be the household name that some of her castmates are, but she’s certainly not short on talent. Of the more than 600 girls who turned up for the open call in New York and Los Angeles, “Shanice was the best singer and actress,” said Meron in the same interview. “She also felt like a real teenager who would bring something fresh and touching to the show.”

The 19-year-old New Jersey native has five years of musical training

under her belt and has co-starred in local productions of “West Side Story,” “Pippin” and more. She even has experience with “The Wiz” already, having played Addaperle in her middle school production of the show. Now she dons her silver slippers and a crisp jean jacket as a contemporary Dorothy, ready to belt it out with the best of them.

It requires genuine talent to pull off a live performance, and there’s no doubt that the cast of “The Wiz Live!” has it in spades. The live musical shows are becoming a tradition for NBC during the holidays, and this one has all the elements necessary to be a huge hit. Don’t miss “The Wiz Live!” when it airs Thursday, Dec. 3, on NBC.

Q: I heard they’re making a sequel to “Pacific Rim.” Any details on its release?

A: You’re getting ahead of yourself a little here. Actually, you’re getting ahead of Legendary Pictures.

There are no details available about the release of “Pacific Rim 2” because we don’t know for sure if it’ll ever be released.

The latest news is that Guillermo del Toro, the action-horror-fantasy auteur who wrote and directed the original “Pacific Rim” in 2013, has finished a script for the sequel and submitted it to the studio. However, even he isn’t entirely optimistic about its chances.

“Budget and script went in,” he wrote on Twitter last month. “No answers yet. If anything happens, I will post.”

This, of course, suggests that perhaps nothing will happen. In fact, it’s a distinct possibility, given that the project had been called off as recently as September.

It was never a sure thing. Even though the original grossed more than $400 million worldwide, it cost nearly $200 million to make. That’s still a pretty good return, but it’s certainly worrying, since sequels usually don’t earn as much. And the fact that del Toro mentioned the budget in his brief post suggests he might be worried about the money side of things.

That would be fair, since the budget was one of the reasons cited when the studio said it was canceling the sequel in September. Fortunately for fans, del Toro is pushing ahead with it anyway, perhaps hoping to win over the studio with a great script.

But whatever script he turns in will be expensive I don’t think anyone’s found a cheap way to make a movie about people in giant robot suits fighting equally giant underwater monsters.

The original plan was to release the film in August 2017, but even just with the delays so far, that will likely have to be pushed back if it does get picked up.

Bravo’s ‘Girlfriend’s Guide to Divorce’ gears up for season 2

By Shona Dustan TV Media Girl power: One of Bravo’s most talked-about series is back for round 2, and more great talent is sure to equal even more drama this time around. The second season of “Girlfriend’s Guide to Divorce,� premiering Tuesday, Dec. 1, on the cabler, will again star the indefatigable Lisa Edelstein (“House�) as Abby McCarthy, a 40-something author in the midst of a messy divorce.

Though divorce, change and moving on are central themes of the show, the most poignant motif is friendship; as Abby deals with the difďŹ cult changes in her life, she is supported by her friends, who do their best to strengthen one another as each woman navigates their own unique and complex relationships.

Alanna Ubach (“Legally Blonde,� 2001), Beau Garrett (“TRON: Legacy,� 2010) and Necar Zadegan (“24�) star as friends Jo, Phoebe and Delia, respectively.

This season, Retta who played the always fabulous Donna in “Parks and Recreation� joins the cast as Barbara, a rival of Abby’s. Also joining the team is former “Smash� star Megan Hilty, who stars as Jo’s ex-husband’s new wife.

Reprising her role as Abby’s agent is Carrie Fisher (“Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope,� 1977), who will play a more prominent role this season.

Season 2 of “Girlfriend’s Guide to Divorce� premieres Tuesday, Dec. 1, on Bravo. ‘Saul’ searching: AMC is preparing to unleash the second season of its “Breaking Bad� prequel. Spinoffs are a big risk for networks it’s often impossible to transplant the magic of one show into another but AMC has been fully committed to “Better Call Saul� from the get-go, even ordering season 2 months before season 1 began.

A good thing, too, since it turned out to be a huge hit with critics and viewers alike, even winning star Bob Odenkirk (“Fargo�) an Emmy nomination. AMC dropped the preview for season 2 early in November and, like its freshman

This season, it seems Jimmy McGill (Odenkirk) is in for a darker storyline than last; McGill states in the preview that he will no longer be held back by the desire to “do the right thing,� and proceeds to identify himself as Saul Goodman. For those unfamiliar with the story, McGill and Goodman are one and the same, before he adopted the moniker as this is a prequel, we get to see how earnest and down-on-his-luck McGill morphed into “Breaking Bad’s� much sketchier version of Saul over the course of the series.

Odenkirk is a comedy writer by trade, so the role of a slimy, corrupt lawyer was somewhat of a departure for the actor. A fan favorite from his ďŹ rst appearance in season 2 of “Breaking Bad,â€? AMC recognized the character’s value and announced the spinoff in 2013, the same year “Breaking Badâ€? concluded. Though he may be working outside his comfort zone, Odenkirk has really leaned into the part, bringing just enough sly humor and manic intensity to the table to keep the sleazy character relatable and exciting.

Watch for the premiere of “Better Call Saul,� which returns in February on AMC.

Something old, something new: An old romcom favorite is about to get a makeover. ABC has teamed up with producers of the 1997 hit movie “My Best Friend’s Wedding� in an effort to bring the characters to the small screen in a half-hour comedy.

The ďŹ lm starred Julia Roberts (“Erin Brockovich,â€? 2000) as 27-year-old Julianne Potter, a woman who made a pact with her best friend, Michael (Dermot Mulroney, “The Grey,â€? 2011), that they would marry at 28 if neither were tied down already. When Michael announces his impending nuptials just weeks before Jules’ 28th birthday, she goes off the deep end and does her best to sabotage his wedding (hilariously, of course).

The end of the ďŹ lm ďŹ nds Jules in a much more accepting state of mind, and this is where the TV show will start off.

Jules is happy for Michael and his wife, though maybe still a bit sad, and now has her whole life ahead of her with no one to fall back on. She’s single and free in New York City with another best friend by her side.

Played by Rupert Everett (“Parade’s Endâ€?) in the ďŹ lm, George Downes is Jules’ partner in crime and conďŹ dante; with enough conďŹ dence for both of them and sass for days, George balances out Jules’ insecurities and is sure to provide plenty drama of his own.

No casting news or premiere dates yet, but scripts are in the works. The half-hour comedy “My Best Friend’s Wedding� will hopefully air on ABC in 2017.
