Counties offer services for veterans
BY KAYLA BRENNAN
kbrennan@kpcmedia.com
KENDALLVILLE — Sometimes, you just need some help. Veterans in the four-county area have people and resources available to them, even things that might not be in their county specifically. Each county has a veterans service officer (VSO) who can help veterans with whatever they need. Whether it’s filing claims or finding counseling, calling these individuals should be the starting point if you Miller are a veteran and have questions. Brian Lamm is the VSO in DeKalb County. When asked about the programs offered to veterans, his reply was, “How many hours do you have?” He listed federal and state programs but one local nonprofit organization he mentioned helps veterans in not only DeKalb County, but LaGrange, Noble and Steuben counties as well. Quiet Knight Inc., located in Auburn where Lamm is the president, has many facets and provides short-term assistance to veterans in need. The organization offers a short-term apartment, a food pantry, a party hall where the profits support the food pantry, a furniture bank and help with financial problems. If a homeless vet needs a place to stay, Lamm can help, but he makes it clear it’s not a permanent arrangement; Quiet Knight offers an apartment in Waterloo and will pay all the bills, buy the food and take care of all of the vet’s needs, but the vet can only stay for 45 days. “The homeless shelter is restricted to the four counties up there. If you are a veteran that is in need of a place for the short term, that is what that place is for. It’s not for long term,” Lamm said. Lamm helps veterans find a job and once the vet is hired, they are expected to save all of their money and use that to get an apartment. “I’m giving you help, but I am not giving you a freebie. Everybody needs some help once and a while and that’s what we’re providing but we are not here to support you forever. You have to be willing to do it,” Lamm said. The Quiet Knight food pantry is open to any vet, anytime. All they need to do is call. “All of the canned goods, boxed goods, any of that kind of stuff that they want, they go over there and fill up their

baggies and then we take them to Kroger or Walmart or somewhere and we buy all of the milk, bread, eggs and meat and that kind of stuff that is perishable. So they will have fresh stuff,” Lamm said. This organization runs strictly on donations. If interested in donating, go to http://www.quietknight.org/. In Noble County, there is only one outlying program, according to VSO Michael P. Clouse. In Ligonier, Cathryn Miller, a retired Air Force medic after 34 years of service, started a support group called Vets Chat. She said she is tired of the suicide rates and instead of just talking about it, she wants to do something about it. “If I can save one life, did I not save the world? Veterans are so valuable. You know, you look at a veteran, and not only were we trained, but we have so much experience. With most veterans, we have such a work ethic you would not believe. Most of us are hardworking, dedicated and driven. “When one commits suicide, we have lost a treasure,” Miller said.
This group is not limited to the military. Police officers, firefighters and emergency medical technicians are welcome as well. “If we can just save one life. If someone with PTSD or sexual trauma can come and just talk. Someone who is hurting but doesn’t want anyone to know. The military and police, fire and EMT are so alike you have no idea. I don’t want them to think they are alone either. We all have to stick together,” Miller said. This support group meets every Sunday at the American Legion in Ligonier, from 1-2 p.m. Clouse, a part-time Veterans Affairs employee, has his office phone number and cell phone number listed on the Department of Veterans Affairs website just in case vets needs help after hours. His position mostly consists of trying to get veterans some type of disability if an accident happened on active duty. If he cannot help veterans himself, he can contact someone who can. Steuben County’s Veterans Affairs Office hosts a food bank and can provide clothing for
vets. “I would say that our office is a little more geared for that kind of thing just for the sheer fact that we are kind of out here in no man’s land where there is not a lot of help. I have the resources up here to funnel a lot of homeless veterans to Fort Wayne where there actually is a resource there,” Steuben County VSO Alex Dobson said. The food bank is not only for the veteran but for their families as well. He recommends coming to the office and talk to him. No regular counseling services are provided but if there is a need, he can help make that possible. “I can get the resources to do those counselings. I am the one-stop shop for any veteran’s needs as far as counseling, VA health care, application for service-connected disabilities, VA pension, death and burial,” Dobson said. Dobson likes to have that communication with veterans and hopes vets reach out. “If they have any questions, anything SEE VETERANS, PAGE 13

at all, just tell them to come down to my office. I mean anything,” Dobson said. LaGrange County does not offer local programs, but can also be helpful. “We do refer veterans that might want to or have the need to talk to a counselor to the Vet Center or the VHA. I’m a part-time employee of the county. Basically what I do is I assist with filing claims and applications for all kinds of different federal and state benefits,” Connelly said.
He said if a veteran needed anything to call him and he can help. But, he seems to be certain that there are not any homeless veterans in LaGrange County. “We do not have the typical homeless veteran up here that we are aware of. If we become aware of one, we can certainly take care of their needs,” Connelly said. One resource that all counties mentioned is if counseling services are needed, they recommend going to Fort Wayne. One counseling resource is the Vet Center Readjustment Counseling
Services. “We’re part of the Department of Veterans Affairs but we are a separate entity from the VA Hospital. We do readjustment counseling, PTSD, any mental health for veterans who have arrived showing that they were in conjunction with combat. We see veterans in any era, Vietnam, Korea, World War II and everything in between. Any conflict that occurred for many years, we can see those people,” Jessica Gerardot, director of the Fort Wayne Vet Center, said. Family counseling is available
for those who were affected by their veteran’s deployment. Bereavement counseling for families who have lost someone on active duty is another service that can be utilized. “We also do military sexual trauma for anybody, you do not have to have been deployed,” Gerardot said. Everyone at the Vet Center is a licensed clinician and, according to Gerardot, a lot of the staff members are veterans themselves they understand what it’s like to adjust back to civilian life.

“Semper Paratus (Always Ready)” From North and South and East and West, The Coast Guard’s in the fight. Destroying subs and landing troops, The Axis feels our might. For we’re the first invaders, On every fighting field. Afloat, ashore, on men and Spars, You’ll find the Coast Guard shield. We’re always ready for the call, We place our trust in Thee. Through howling gale and shot and shell, To win our victory. “Semper Paratus” is our guide, Our pledge, our motto, too. We’re “Always Ready,” do or die! Aye! Coast Guard, we fight for you. From Aztec shore to Arctic zone, To Europe and Far East. The Flag is carried by our ships, In times of war and peace. And never have we struck it yet, In spite of foe-men’s might, Who cheered our crews and cheered again, For showing how to fight. We’re always ready for the call, We place our trust in Thee. Through howling gale and shot and shell, To win our victory. “Semper Paratus” is our guide, Our pledge, our motto, too. We’re “Always Ready,” do or die! Aye! Coast Guard, we fight for you. SURVEYOR and NARCISSUS,
The EAGLE and DISPATCH, The HUDSON and the TAMPA The names are hard to match; From Barrow’s shores to Paraguay, Great Lakes or ocean’s wave, The Coast Guard fought through storms and winds To punish or to save. We’re always ready for the call, We place our trust in Thee. Through howling gale and shot and shell, To win our victory. “Semper Paratus” is our guide, Our pledge, our motto, too. We’re “Always Ready,” do or die! Aye! Coast Guard, we fight for you. Aye, we’ve been “Always Ready” To do, to fight, or die Write glory to the shield we wear In letters to the sky. To sink the foe or save the maimed Our mission and our pride We’ll carry on ‘til Kingdom Come Ideals for which we’ve died. We’re always ready for the call, We place our trust in Thee. March along, sing our song, with the Army of the free. Count the brave, count the true, who have fought to victory. We’re the Army and proud of our name! We’re the Army and proudly proclaim: First to fight for the right, And to build the Nation’s might, And the Army goes rolling along. Proud of all we have done, Fighting till the battle’s won, And the Army goes rolling along.
Then it’s hi! hi! hey! The Army’s on its way. Count off the cadence loud and strong; For where’er we go, You will always know That the Army goes rolling along. Second Chorus: Valley Forge, Custer’s ranks, San Juan Hill and Patton’s tanks, And the Army went rolling along. Minute men, from the start, Always fighting from the heart, And the Army keeps rolling along. Men in rags, men who froze, Still that Army met its foes, And the Army went rolling along. Faith in God, then we’re right, And we’ll fight with all our might, As the Army keeps rolling along. Then it’s hi! hi! hey! The Army’s on its way. Count off the cadence loud and strong; (two! three!) For where’er we go, You will always know That the Army goes rolling along! (keep it rolling!) And the Army goes rolling along!

Our flag’s unfurled to every breeze From dawn to setting sun; We have fought in ev’ry clime and place Where we could take a gun; In the snow of far-off Northern lands And in sunny tropic scenes; You will find us always on the job The United States Marines Here’s health to you and to our Corps Which we are proud to serve; In many a strife we’ve fought for life And never lost our nerve; If the Army and the Navy Ever look on Heaven’s scenes; They will find the streets are guarded By United States Marines.

How to show appreciation for military personnel
METRO CREATIVE CONNECTION
BY METRO CREATIVE CONNECTION Military personnel are unsung heroes whose sacrifices for their country make it possible for hundreds of millions of people to enjoy freedoms that many people across the globe do not have. In recognition of those sacrifices, many people want to show their appreciation to both active and retired servicemen and women. Fortunately, there are many ways to do just that. • Pitch in at home. According to the United States Department of Defense, the United States military currently deploys active duty personnel in nearly 150 countries. Many of those troops are separated from their families for months at a time, and that separation can make things difficult for their loved ones back home. If a neighbor’s spouse is deployed overseas, offer to help around the house. Whether it’s mowing their lawn, dropping their kids off at school or inviting the whole family over for dinner one night each week, such gestures can go a long way toward easing the burden faced by spouses of deployed military
personnel. • Send gifts to active personnel. Servicemen and women on active duty do not enjoy many of the luxuries that tend to be taken for granted back home. But men and women who want to show their appreciation can send care packages to active personnel serving overseas. An organization such as Operation Gratitude (operationgratitude. com), which to date has sent nearly 1.3 million care packages to active personnel, sends care packages filled with snacks, entertainment, personal hygiene products and handmade items. This provides active personnel a taste of home while also letting them know their extraordinary efforts are appreciated and not forgotten. • Volunteer at a veterans hospital. Unfortunately, many servicemen and women return home from their deployments with injuries or health conditions that require long-term care. By volunteering at veteran hospitals, men and women can help veterans overcome their injuries and provide much-needed
help to staff at hospitals that could use a helping hand. Visit volunteer.va.gov for more information. • Make a financial donation. For those who want to support servicemen and women but don’t have much free time to do so, financial donations can go a long way toward improving the quality of life of active and retired military personnel. Many programs work with veterans to improve their quality of life, and such organizations rely heavily on financial donations to make their missions a reality. The Wounded Warrior Project (woundedwarriorproject.org), for example, works to honor and empower servicemen and women who incurred physical or mental injuries or illnesses on or after Sept. 11, 2001. The organization relies on the generosity of individuals who want to help wounded military personnel overcome their injuries and illnesses. Local organizations include Honor Flight of Northeast Indiana, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legions and more.
