[ TWENTY FIVE ]

FOREWORD

“The problem life, is that w love, meanin sitting behin successful pe they create th their own me their own mo —

To read these pieces in the Journal 25, some composed of future-planning (25 things I want to do before I’m 25), and others of retrospection and nostalgia (25 things I wish I knew when I was 25), is to meet the most interesting kind of voice. Though each list is composed according to the myriad whims of different individuals, we found that as we went through these jotted-down thoughts, a familiar element emerged in all. Whether it was a pre-25 retrospection or a checklist to accomplish before an approaching midtwenties birthday, the creation of these spontaneous character pieces seemed to spark the same reaction in each individual: the furious desire to create experience. We never seem to stop reconstructing, rearranging, or trying to add new pieces our fragmented whole. The realization that our experience can be created, that is, determined by our creative internal power, is both terrifying and empowering. After all, creating the pre-25 list is a dual acknowledgement: of youth and rapid aging, of past and future, of fear and fervent embrace. Without fear, it seems – fear of aging, death, ignorance, missing out on spectacular experiences – we might not cling to life, to the things we know we want, and know we must do. Otherwise, the beautiful crazy confusing mess of a fully-lived life might never be ours.

It is this kind of awareness that initially led to Journal 25. A 22-year-old (our friend Shauna)’s awareness, specifically, of the impending age 25. In some ways, admittedly, the number 25 is arbitrary, as some of the lists in this project fall short of this count or extend beyond it. But the number is very much an important marker, as its immediacy forced Shauna to expand her perspective and think bigger. To consider her life as something she could mold, filling reality with the choices of her imagination. 6

m, often not discovered until late in when you look for things in life like ng, motivation, it implies they are nd a tree or under a rock. The most eople in life recognize, that in life their own love, they manufacture eaning, they generate otivation.” — Neil deGrasse Tyson We then expanded the scope of the project to include voices whose experiences extend far beyond year 25. The advice and hard-earned lessons of these people weighs on each digital page with a wisdom far eclipsing that of the bright-eyed twenty-somethings occupying the first portion of this project. Nevertheless, the imploring words of the post-twenties perspectives share in that same crucial awareness of harnessing one’s internal creativity. Indeed, the fact that we found this element in the perspectives of people who were looking back with a wiser eye on their past speaks to the urgency of consciously determining the direction of one’s own life. The opportunity to collaborate with these incredible voices made this project far greater than we could have conceived on our own. Here they are, escaping the “problem” as expressed by Neil deGrasse Tyson, with raw honesty and a wide imaginative scope.
