Custer's Bison
Custer's Bison Fifteen hundred bison roam free across Custer State Park's 71,000-acre spread. They roam the hills, canyons, prairies and the roads. And they never fail to remind you that you are in their house. Lesser seen are the pronghorn antelope, mountain lions, bighorn sheep and elk. While the summer is flush with tourists and hot South Dakota summers, winter brings snow and solitude. The campgrounds are empty, the ranger stations shut down and the animals amble about the park with more freedom than other months.
