Welcome to Kings Place Straight after our five-day Opening Festival at the beginning of October we launch into our Autumn season at Kings Place, arranged as a series of themed weeks, curated by a wide range of musicians and musicologists to enable in-depth exploration of a variety of music through performance, talks, film and visual arts. Throughout the year, we are also running regular strands for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday evenings, hosting chamber music, poetry and discussion, contemporary music and jazz. Kings Place houses the first newly built concert hall in London since the Barbican opened 25 years ago in 1982. There are two new art galleries, Pangolin London and Kings Place Gallery, and in the Rotunda bar and restaurant on the waterfront you can relax with good food and drink, looking out over the canal barges in Battlebridge Basin. Kings Place also forms the new headquarters for the Guardian and Observer newspapers and two of London’s finest orchestras, the London Sinfonietta and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. Since 1999 the London Chamber Music Society has managed the celebrated London concert series which can trace its origins to the Sunday concerts at South Place from the 1880s and then Conway Hall from 1929. Their legacy is extraordinary, the concerts having been associated with many important premieres and numerous famous performers over the years, including Henry Wood, Frank Bridge, Sammons, Ysaye and Percy Grainger. This series tells the story of a musical journey. It began when a group of musicians from the London Sinfonietta, the Lead Musicians of the Uganda Dance Academy, composer Nigel Osborne and sculptor Peter Randall-Page travelled to the remote island of Lolui in Lake Victoria, Uganda to explore an amazing set of natural rock gongs. In 2007 the ensemble performed at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Kampala, and the project culminates at Kings Place with concerts, drumming workshops, talks, films, a club night and an art installation. The centrepiece of the project will be a new London Sinfonietta commission Rock Music, by Nigel Osborne inspired by his experiences in Uganda, and the opportunity to hear a collaboratively devised piece created by London Sinfonietta and Ugandan musicians in response to the sounds of the rock gongs.

BEETHOVEN UNWRAPPED: Week I Beethoven is a towering figure in Western music; his music represents the ultimate realisation of one tradition and the explosive birth of another. As a revolutionary artist, he casts a shadow that will surely outreach the 21 st century. But his was not just a revolution on the public stage; some of his most radical inspirations are contained in his music for chamber ensembles or solo piano. Beethoven Unwrapped is an eight-week exploration of that chamber music, running throughout the year at Kings Place, featuring an exciting programme of the complete piano sonatas, string quartets, piano trios, songs, films of legendary performances and study days. Performers include the Orion Quartet of New York, French pianist Jean-Bernard Pommier, Peter Cropper, Christoph Richter and Maurice Bourgue. PUNKT takes the idea of live remixing to a new level, occupying two spaces in Kings Place to create back-to-back concerts for a moving audience. In the live room, musicians including Nils Petter Molvaer, Sidsel Endresen, Eivind Aarset, Morten Qvenild, Arve Henriksen and the UK’s Tim Elsenburg, of Sweet Billy Pilgrim fame, combine in varying fomations to create stunning sonic landscapes. After each set the audience crosses the foyer to Hall Two to find the original material completely re-invented. Reflective acoustic sets can mutate into pumped-up electronica, whilst high density, full on performances can become stripped to their bare essentials – sampled, remixed and transformed into a completely new entity. Each evening consists of four sets, two in Hall One (seated) and two in Hall Two (standing only).

BEETHOVEN UNWRAPPED: Week 2 Beethoven Unwrapped is an eight-week festival running throughout the 2008-9 season at Kings Place, featuring an exciting programme of the composer’s complete chamber music, films of legendary performances, documentaries and study days. Peter Cropper of the much-missed Lindsay Quartet explores the chamber music he wrote for and during his two visits, inspired by Saloman, the women he admired and the city’s enthusiastic audience. 1 October – 9 November 08 Pangolin London opens with an exhibition of new work by celebrated sculptor Peter Randall-Page. This new body of work has developed from the Rock Music Rock Art project which was inspired by the ancient ‘rock gongs’ of remote Lolui Island in Lake Victoria, Uganda. Sponsored by the Ruwenzori Sculpture Foundation and supported by the British Council, Peter Randall-Page, composer Nigel Osborne and members of the London Sinfonietta recently made the long journey to Lolui Island to re-discover the rock gongs and collaborate with local sculptors and musicians. Over the past 25 years Peter Randall-Page has gained an international reputation through his sculpture, drawings and prints. In the UK his public sculptures can be found in London, Edinburgh, Manchester, Bristol, Cardiff and Newbury. He is also represented in a number of permanent collections such as the Tate and the British Museum.

Sculpture Residency In October 2008, sculptor Abigail Fallis will take up the first sculpture residency at Kings Place run by Pangolin London. The artist will benefit from studio facilities and contribute to the Kings Place outreach programme, working with community groups and local schools. Abigail Fallis’s residency will culminate in a solo exhibition with Pangolin London in early 2010. The second sculptor in residence, starting in October 2009, will be Peter Oloya, a Ugandan artist who will explore themes of war and peace as experienced by him in his homeland. 38

Kings Place Gallery Nicolaus Widerberg PAST IN FUTURE sculpture 1 October – 28 November 08 Predominantly still and monolithic, Widerberg’s large and small scale sculpture in granite and glass unites traditions as diverse as pre-classical Greek and the elongated presences of Giacometti. Although he claims that he is not influenced by the art of antiquity, he nonetheless values its sense of timelessness and spirituality. ‘My goal is to produce strength, communicate energy: there is something about creating something living out of an inanimate material. I try to give life to something dead, which comes to life – it’s a sort of cycle.’ In his catalogue essay William Varley describes this – ‘...beings in a state of suspended animation; hence their timelessness. However, we are happy to offer to re-sell tickets once all house seats have been sold. Ticket re-sales will be at the discretion of the Box Office Manager. Tickets that have been sold will be refunded in the form of a gift certificate valid for 12 months. Gift certificates can be used as full or part payment against tickets for future performances or events at Kings Place. REFUNDS Tickets will not be refunded unless a performance is cancelled or abandoned when less than half the performance has taken place. DELIVERY Tickets will be sent out free of charge by 2nd Class post. If the booking is within 7 days of the event your tickets will be held at the Box Office and may be collected from the automated ticketing kiosks on production of the credit / debit card used to make your booking. ACCESS Kings Place is fully accessible for wheelchair users. There are fully accessible toilets on each floor. A number of wheelchair and carer spaces are available in both auditoria. A free ticket is available to a designated companion on purchase of a standard ticket by the wheelchair user. Infra red hearing assistance exists in Hall One. Hall Two and the Box Office are equipped with ‘Loops’ to help hearing aid users. Visitors can use this facility by switching their hearing aids to ‘T’. The website has been designed to be friendly for the visually impaired. PHOTOGRAPHY Photography is absolutely prohibited during performances, concerts and exhibitions. This also holds true for film, video and sound recordings. Kings Place or any permitted third parties may carry out general filming and sound recording in or about the venue. By purchasing tickets you consent to you and your party being included in, and to the exploitation of, such films and recordings without payment. LATE ARRIVALS If you arrive late for the start of a performance or after an interval we appreciate that you will want to take your seat as soon as possible. We will do everything possible to assist. To limit disturbance to fellow audience members and artists we may have to ask you to wait until a suitable break in the performance. Occasionally it may not be possible to enter once the performance has started.
Getting to Kings Place Kings Place is located just 150 metres from King’s Cross and St Pancras Stations, one of the most connected locations in London and now the biggest transport hub in Europe. The main entrance is situated on York Way beneath the distinctive undulating glass façade, visible from the York Way exit at King’s Cross Station. PUBLIC TRANSPORT Transport for London’s Journey Planner – http://journeyplanner.tfl.gov.uk provides up to the minute travel options on how to reach Kings Place quickly and accurately. Alternatively, call London Travel Information on 020 7222 1234. UNDERGROUND The nearest Underground station is King’s Cross St Pancras, on the Circle, Metropolitan, Piccadilly, Victoria, Hammersmith & City and Northern lines. TRAIN The nearest mainline railway stations are King’s Cross, St Pancras and Euston. Visitors travelling by Eurostar will arrive at St Pancras International. BUS The Bus Route to York Way is the 390. Other services running to nearby King’s Cross St Pancras are: 10, 17, 30, 45, 46, 59, 63, 73, 91, 205, 214, 259, 476. CAR Kings Place is easily accessible by car and is clearly signposted in the immediate area. The building is outside of the Congestion Charge Zone.
BICYCLE For recommended cycling routes to Kings Place please visit Transport for London’s website at www.tfl.gov.uk. Alternatively, you can call London Travel Information on 020 7222 1234. TAXIS Visitors can pick up taxis either on York Way and the streets immediately surrounding Kings Place or at the taxi ranks at King’s Cross and St Pancras Stations.
Where to park CAR Limited parking is available to visitors in the surrounding streets and the nearest NCP Car Park is close by on Pancras Road next to St Pancras International Station.
