About the Dugout Club

The North Muskegon baseball program began the Dugout Club in 2010, which was the 75th season of Norsemen baseball. Since then with support from people throughout our baseball community, we have been able to provide our players with a top-notch facility and the proper equipment necessary to continue this tradition. These donations helped offset costs of team equipment, such as catcher’s gear, bases, batting cages, etc. Each level donor had their name printed in this program as well as receiving a copy of the program and a Norsemen window decal. At $25, donors received a T-shirt; at $50, a T-shirt and a cap; at $100, a T-shirt, a cap and a hooded sweatshirt; and at $200, a T-shirt, a cap, a hooded sweatshirt and a pullover. The 2013 Dugout Club donors brought in more than $3,600. As head coach of the North Muskegon baseball program, I thank you for supporting these young men. – Warren Kent III, head coach

Team History There’s a strong tradition of baseball at North Muskegon, which celebrated its 75th season in 2010. The Norsemen were one of the dominant forces in the West Michigan Conference in the 1930s, ‘40s and ‘50s, winning 12 of the school’s 14 conference titles in that time frame. The beginning of North Muskegon baseball can be traced back to 1935 when Lyle McNitt led the Norse to a 5-1 record. After having no team in 1936 for reasons unknown, McNitt led the Norse to back-to-back WMC titles. He would also lead NM to the league title in his final year in 1942. In the 1940s and early ‘50s, Paul Moyes led the Norsemen to five conference titles while Earl Meyers won a WMC championship in 1945. Arnold Wilson’s only year at the helm saw the Norse capture the title in 1952. Dunc Lectka captured two WMC titles with wins in 1953 and 1955. From 1960 to 1966, NM exited the WMC to play in the Seaway Conference. In Bruce Benson’s four years, the Norse shared the Seaway title in 1961. The Norse won the Seaway outright in 1963 under Lee David. In 1967, the Norse returned to the WMC, where the Norse captured the conference title in 1972 under Larry Blackmer. After that, the rest of the 1970s, the ‘80s and the early ‘90s were lean years for the Norse as NM posted winning records in just three seasons from 1973 to 1994. The longest-tenured coach in North Muskegon was Walt Gawkowski, who led the blue and gold for 19 years (1987 to 2003), winning five District titles and posting 183 wins. In 2004, Warren Kent III took over and led the Norsemen to the school’s second County title and the school’s sixth District championship in his second season. Kent would lead the Norse to both titles in 2007 also. But it is the 2008 team that will go down as one of the best in school history. The Norse smashed the school

record with 34 wins. En route, this senior-dominated team brought home five trophies: the Reeths-Puffer Invitational championship, the school’s first WMC title since 1972, the County title, the district crown, and the school’s first-ever regional crown. After that, the team won its quarterfinal game before ending its season in Battle Creek in the state semifinals. The 2009 team won the district crown, and the 2010 squad won 20 games. In 2011, the Norse won 24 games while winning the school’s 10th district title before losing in the regional title game. The 2012 season was bittersweet. While the Norse won 26 games, which was the second-most in school history, the team did not win any championships. Check us out at www.northmuskegonbaseball.com The history section of the North Muskegon Baseball web site was created by head coach Warren Kent III with much of the historical research done by local sportscaster and sports historian Jim Moyes. What began as “let’s post all of the school’s baseball scores” turned into a monster research project that took many hours to research and transcribe. It is our desire that other schools will see our site and become excited about doing the same for their schools in a number of different sports. With this era’s modern technology, Internet use, and the multitude of libraries that have local newspapers on microfilm, this project and others could become a reality. With that said, there are still gobs of information missing that we would love to post on our web site. It is virtually impossible, with the information that has been made available to us, to come up with career statistics for those who played before 1993.

We have in our possession all the scorebooks for games played from 1993 through the 2011 season. Prior to 1970, it was rare to see mention of one’s batting average in the Muskegon Chronicle. Unfortunately, there was nothing like The Sporting News available where we could post each game’s box score into our data base. How we would love to know what former legends, such as Bill Duplissis, batted in the early years of North Muskegon baseball. What we have been able to track down is information as reported in local newspaper accounts from each game. These we have passed along to our readers as listed under “Interesting Facts.” The neat thing about a web site is that corrections and additions can be easily and quickly made. If you have any information you would like to add, please contact Jim Moyes at jimmoyes@aol. com or Warren Kent III at kentw@monashores.net. – Jim Moyes, NM Baseball Historian

2013 Year in Review Season Summary (16-14 overall, 10-4 in West Michigan Conference): While the Norse had a winning record for the ninth consecutive season, it was a quirky season. • The Norse played 11 one-run games, going 4-7. • The Norse played a school record four extra-inning games, going 1-3. • The Norse lost to both Muskegon and Western Michigan Christian while winning three games from Oakridge and sweeping a doubleheader from Whitehall. The Muskegon loss was the Big Reds only win of the season, and the WMC loss was the first to the Warriors since 2002 and snapped an 18-game win streak. The three wins over the Eagles was the first season sweep since 2008, and the sweep of Whitehall was the first since 1995. • The Norse won the school’s 700th game with a 5-2 victory over Hesperia. NM now has a 705-727-5 record in 78 seasons. •The Norse helped coach Kent win his 200th game, a 3-1 victory over Mason County Central. Coach Kent ended the season with a 209-118-1 overall record. • The Norse only had two spots in the batting order post an average better than .300. The No. 3 spot was 47-for-99 (.475) while the lead-off spot was 38-for-110 (.345). The No. 4 (.232), No. 7 (.227) and No. 9 (.205) all struggled to find consistency. • The Norse, as usual, posted a big run advantage in the first inning, outscoring their opponents 46-15 in the first frame. NM had the first inning lead in 13 games but only posted a 7-6 record in those games. The Norse were 7-3 when tied after the first inning and 0-5 when losing in first inning. The Norse out scored their opponents in every inning except the sixth (21 to 12) and seventh (4 to 2) innings. • The Norse set two school records while tying two others. The offense struck out just 132 times to break the school record by 11, and the pitching staff walked just 76 batters, breaking the school record by nine. The six doubles in the 11-1 win over Shelby tied a school record for two-baggers in a game, and the four doubles in the third inning of the same game also tied the school record for doubles in an inning. •Senior Adrian Anderson was by far the overall leader for the Norse. Adrian, the team’s MVP, led the team in most offensive categories. He led the team with an even .500 average (48-for-96), which tied him for No. 6 on the all-time season list. Adrian also paced the team with 96 at bats, 48 hits, 14 doubles, three triples, one home run, and a .569 on-base percentage, and he tied for the team lead with 27 runs and four hit by pitches. Adrian was also the team’s No. 1 pitcher, finishing with a 5-4 record with a 1.63 ERA. He led the team with 55 strikeouts in 60 innings. •Juniors Ryan Compeau, Reese McCamant and Jesse Dunn were the only other players with a better than .300 average. Compeau, who manned first base, posted a .360 average (27-for-75) while batting in 22 runs. McCamant played both third and shortstop and finished with a .355 average (27-for-76) and tied for the team lead with four hit by pitches while stealing 14 bases. Dunn batted .319 (29-for-91) while tying for the team lead with 27 runs and four sacrifices and leading the team with 16 stolen bases. All three also saw time on the mound with McCamant tossing 32 innings with a 1.53 ERA and a 2-4 record. Neither Compeau nor Dunn recorded a decision in a combined 22 innings of work. •Juniors Travis Webster (.298) and Brody Scott (.292) both came within one hit of hitting the .300 mark. Webster played outfield while Scott shared time as catcher and shared the Gold Glove Award. •Senior Rogan McEvoy, while struggling offensively, posted the team’s best record on the mound with a 7-2 record. Rogan had a 1.53 ERA in 59 innings while striking out 52 and walking just 13. Offensively, Rogan led the team with 19 walks. •Three other seniors – Adam Edick, Chase Cooke and Jack Gautraud – all played significant innings with Edick tying for the team lead with four sacrifices while Jack led the team with 20 strikeouts. Chase shared the Gold Glove Award. •Juniors Stephen Pallante, Chris Hillman and Bailey Cooper each gained valuable playing time. •One sophomore, Riley Draper, played 17 games and posted a 2-2 record on the mound while also playing second base. •Two sophomores (Ben Gautraud and Connor Gannon) and a freshman (Connor McEvoy) all played at least one game.
