WK2 Coach’s Award & Scholarship Beginning with the 2017 season, the recipient of the North Muskegon varsity baseball team’s Coach’s Award will also be given a $100 scholarship. Both awards will be in honor of assistant coach Warren Kent Jr., who passed away Feb. 6, 2017. The award will be known as the K2 Coach’s Award while the scholarship is the Warren Kent Jr. NM Baseball Scholarship. K2 spent 12 of his 51 seasons of coaching high school baseball with the Norse as the assistant varsity coach under the guidance of his son, Warren Kent III. Coach K2 was instrumental in helping the Norse to a 244-152-1 record over his 12 seasons, including five district titles, three County championships, and a semi-final appearance in 2008. Additionally, Coach K2, who worked with the outfielders and served as the first-base coach, was named the state’s Assistant Coach of the Year in 2011. Prior to coach at NM, K2 posted a 200-289-3 record as the varsity coach at Ashley, Fulton and Montabella high schools. COACHING STAFF Coach Kent, the winningest coach in NM history, picked up his 200th victory in 2013… has compiled a 253-168-1 (.600 winning percentage) record over 13 seasons… last year, he picked up his 100th West Michigan Conference victory to give him a 100-81-1 record… combined with summer teams and various high schools, has 597-439-8 Varsity (.572) overall record … last Head year, the Norse had its secCoach ond straight losing season… Warren the 2011 squad claimed the Kent III school’s 10th district title

as No. 5 in Div. 4, set the school record with 34 wins and made it to the state’s semifinals… along the way, NM won its first West Michigan Conference title since 1972, won the County championship, brought home a district title, and won the school’s first Regional crown… Kent was named Div. 4 Coach of the Year and Regional Coach of the Year… also, for the second time, Kent was named Muskegon Chronicle’s Coach of the Year; the other time was 2005… during summer 2004, Kent led Line Drives (24-7 record) to the Mickey Mantle (15-Under) World Series… in 2003, led Line Drives to a 47-5 record and a fourth-place finish at the Sandy Koufax (14-Under) World Series… spent four years coaching JV baseball at Mona Shores, posting a 61-46 record… also coached at Battle Creek Central and Lansing Waverly, as well as summer baseball teams in Roosevelt Park, Battle Creek, Lansing, and Middleton, where he began coaching Pony League in 1986 as an 18-year-old… teaches English and

Coach Mieler begins his fifth season as the Norse JV coach… has compiled a 70-22-1 record…a 1998 graduate of Mona Shores, coach Mieler was a four-year varsity player, playing both outfield and pitcher… attended Muskegon Community College, where he earned a full-ride scholarship to play baseball… graduated from Grand Valley State University with a degree in public relations… works at Light Corporation in Grand Haven as a Production Planner/Scheduler… his coaching experience includes a stint at Muskegon JV Head Catholic Central, where he Coach helped out the JV team… Ryan wife Jill works at Port Mieler City Pediatrics… has two boys Carter, 10, who attends fourth grade at NM and Kurt, 8, who attends second grade… family enjoys camping and being outdoors… in the fall, coach Mieler can be found hunting…

Norsemen Baseball 2017

TEAM HISTORY There’s a strong tradition of baseball at North Muskegon, which celebrated its 75th season in 2010.The Norsemen were one of the dominant forces in the West Michigan Conference in the 1930s, ‘40s and ‘50s, winning 12 of the school’s 14 conference titles in that time frame. The beginning of North Muskegon baseball can be traced back to 1935 when Lyle McNitt led the Norse to a 5-1 record. After having no team in 1936 for reasons unknown, McNitt led the Norse to backto-back WMC titles.He would also lead NM to the league title in his final year in 1942. In the 1940s and early ‘50s, Paul Moyes led the Norsemen to five conference titles while Earl Meyers won a WMC championship in 1945. Arnold Wilson’s only year at the helm saw the Norse capture the title in 1952. Dunc Lectka captured two WMC titles with wins in 1953 and 1955. From 1960 to 1966, NM exited the WMC to play in the Seaway Conference. In Bruce Benson’s four years, the Norse shared the Seaway title in 1961. The Norse won the Seaway outright in 1963 under Lee David. In 1967, the Norse returned to the WMC, where the Norse captured the conference title in 1972 under Larry Blackmer.

After that, the rest of the 1970s, the ‘80s and the early ‘90s were lean years for the Norse as NM posted winning records in just three seasons from 1973 to 1994. The longest-tenured coach in North Muskegon was Walt Gawkowski, who led the blue and gold for 19 years (1987 to 2003), winning five District titles and posting 183 wins. In 2004, Warren Kent III took over and led the Norsemen to the school’s second County title and the school’s sixth District championship in his second season. Kent would lead the Norse to both titles in 2007 also. But it is the 2008 team that will go down as one of the best in school history. The Norse smashed the school record with 34 wins. En route, this senior-dominated team brought home five trophies: the Reeths-Puffer Invitational championship, the school’s first WMC title since 1972, the County title, the district crown, and the school’s first-ever regional crown. After that, the team won its quarterfinal game before ending its season in Battle Creek in the state semifinals. The 2009 team won the district crown, and the 2010 squad won 20 games. In 2011, the Norse won 24 games while winning the school’s 10th district title before losing in the regional title game. The 2012 season was bittersweet.

While the Norse won 26 games, which was the second-most in school history, the team did not win any championships. The 26 wins was the seventh time in school history that a Norse team won 20 or more games. The 2013 squad went 16-14 while the 2014 team was 14-13, making it 10 seasons in a row with a winning record before the 2015 squad went 13-17 to end the streak. What began as “let’s post all of the school’s baseball scores” turned into a monster research project that took many hours to research and transcribe. It is our desire that other schools will see our site and become excited about doing the same for their schools in a number of different sports. With this era’s modern technology, Internet use, and the multitude of libraries that have local newspapers on microfilm, this project and others could become a reality. With that said, there are still gobs of information missing that we would love to post on our web site. It is virtually impossible, with the information that has been made available to us, to come up with career statistics for those who played before 1993.

We have in our possession all the scorebooks for games played from 1993 through the 2011 season. Prior to 1970, it was rare to see mention of one’s batting average in the Muskegon Chronicle. Unfortunately, there was nothing like The Sporting News available where we could post each game’s box score into our data base. How we would love to know what former legends, such as Bill Duplissis, batted in the early years of North Muskegon baseball. What we have been able to track down is information as reported in local newspaper accounts from each game. These we have passed along to our readers as listed under “Interesting Facts.” The neat thing about a web site is that corrections and additions can be easily and quickly made. 2016 YEAR IN REVIEW Season Summary (17-20 overall, 4-10 in West Michigan Conference): With the Norse returning five players who batted better than .275 in 2015 and adding three JV players who all batted better than .466 in 2015, expectations for a solid offensive campaign were high. Unfortunately, those expectations were not met as the Norse finished with just two players with better than a .284 average. This year’s team batting average of .267, which was .68 less than last year, was the second lowest in Coach Kent’s 13 years. Additionally, for the first time in school history, the Norse lost 20 games. Prior to this year, the school record was 19 losses, which happened in three consecutive seasons (1996-1998). However, the Norse did add a trophy to the school’s collection, taking second at the Boyne City Invitational. Also, this team continued to battle to the end of the season, posting an 8-3 record over the final 11 games. Looking back on this season, the stats were not always pretty, and here are some stats that explain why the Norse couldn’t quite put it together. • The Norsemen played 13 one-run games, going 7-6 in those contests. The Norse went 1-2 in 1-0 games and lost all three extra innings games. • The Norsemen were outscored by its opponents by 37 runs (194-157). The 157 runs were the second lowest in Coach Kent’s 13 years while the 194 runs surrendered were second most. • First innings, for the second year in a row, proved crucial for the Norse. The Norse had the lead 13 times in the first inning, going 11-2 in such games. However, when NM was tied after the first inning, it went 4-8, and when the Norse were losing in the first inning, they went 2-10. NM only outscored its opponents in the second and sixth innings. • Opponents did bat only .245 against Norse pitching, as NM outhit its opponents 247-231 for a +16, but NM pitchers walked 36 more batters and hit 25 more batters. Additionally, the Norse committed 39 more errors than their opponents. Add those numbers together, and opponents had a +100. The team also had a .346 on-base percentage, which was the lowest in the Coach Kent era. • The 237 strikeouts by Norse pitchers are second most under Coach Kent, but the 147 walks were also second most and the 44 HBP were the most. • In the batting order, only the No. 3 spot posted an average greater than .299 (at .427). No. 1 (.220), No. 5 (.170) and No. 6 (.192) all struggled for consistency. • This team had the second most sacrifices (38) in school history, trailing only the 2008 team, which had 39. • The Norse set a school record with 8 saves. Of course, these statistics only tell part of the story. • The Norse were led throughout the season by three seniors: Erick Bleakley, Ben Garcia and Joe Osborn. Erick led the team in 11 of the 15 offensive categories. Erick led the team with 37 games played, 109 at bats, 32 runs, 47 hits, 11 doubles, 4 triples, 7 home runs, 31 RBI, 12 stolen bases, a .431 batting average, and a .508 on-base percentage. He was selected All-District and All-Region as a first baseman. On the mound, Erick was the team’s workhorse, leading the team with 65 innings and 86 strikeouts, which put him at No. 8 on the Norse season list. He struck out a season-best 12 in the 1-0 loss to Cedar Springs. Opponents batted just .174 while he posted a 0.86 ERA, which was good enough for No. 4 on the NM season list. His career 1.71 ERA (114 innings) is No. 4 on the all-time list. In the conference, Erick batted .465 (20-for-43) and was named a First-Team All-Conference infielder. For his classroom work, Erick was an All-Conference Scholar Athlete, Academic All-District and Academic All-Region. And I know it is no surprise to no one, Erick was selected by the coaching staff as the 2016 Most Valuable Player. However, which no one knows except me, is that Erick was selected by the MHSBCA as a first-team All-State first basemen. Ben, who played mostly third base and outfield (when not pitching), was the only other player to post a batting average better than .300. Ben, who had the team’s longest hit streak at 11 games, posted a .359 batting average. His hit streak put him in a tie for eighth place on the all-time season list. Ben started the season batting .293 (17-for-58), but after the County tournament, he exploded for a .444 average (20-for-45). He was selected All-District as an infielder. On the mound, Ben couldn’t match his 4-1 record from his junior year, slumping to a 1-4 record while walking 35 in just 22 ⅓ innings. For his classroom work, Ben was Academic All-District. Joe led the team with 10 sacrifices, which set a school record for a season. His 12 sacrifices for his career are No. 2 all-time. He also led the team with five hit by pitches. On the mound, Joe became a fixture in the “bullpen.” When a strike was needed to be thrown, Joe was summoned. He picked up his first varsity win on Senior Day, when he tossed a five-inning complete game in the 12-2 victory over Kent City. He also picked up a save at Coopersville. For his improvement in all facets of the game (pitching, defense and hitting), Joe has been selected by the coaching as the team’s Most Improved Player. For his classroom work, Joe was an All-Conference Scholar Athlete and Academic All-District. • The four juniors (Alex Slocum, Brighton Schofield, Jake Bean and Dalton Fuller) who started couldn’t quite get untrack offensively, batting a collective .231 (81-for-350). Alex, the every-day center fielder did move into the No. 6 spot on the season list for sacrifices with six. On the mound, Alex had the team’s best win percentage, going 4-2. He did set a school record with 14 hit batters, including a school record seven in a game against Muskegon Catholic Central in which he got a no decision. For his classroom work, Alex was an All-Conference Scholar Athlete and Academic All-District. For the second straight year, Brighton led the team in walks (18). He had 17 as a sophomore. However, his batting average dropped from .362 as a sophomore to .226 this

2016 YEAR IN REVIEW year. Brighton was hitting .281 (9-for-32) through 12 games when a hip injury occurred. He then batted .192 (10-for-52) for the remainder of the season. On the mound, Brighton finished with 54 strikeouts in 42 2/3 innings. For his classroom work, Brighton was an All-Conference Scholar Athlete and Academic All-District. Jake, who was selected as the Coach’s Award recipient, caught nearly every inning. Dalton, who took home the Gold Glove Award, played both first base and right field. However, he couldn’t find consistency at the plate, dropping from a .339 average as a sophomore to .229 as a junior. Started the season 17-for-55 (.309) through 19 games; batted .122 (5-for-41) through the season’s final 18 games. He did have eight sacrifices, which put him at No. 2 on the NM season list. • Two sophomores (Tommy Gautraud and Jimmy Cobb) saw varying degrees of success. Tommy was a jack of all trades, playing all three outfield positions, third base, second base and catcher. Batting mainly from the lead-off spot, he had two-hit games six times during the season. Jimmy had the dubious honor of leading the team with 23 strikeouts. On the mound, Jimmy tied a school record with three saves. For his classroom work, Jimmy was an All-Conference Scholar Athlete. • The final three players (Sean Bickford, Josh Johnson and Norwegian exchange student Truls Krogh) saw minimal playing time. For his classroom work, Sean was an All-Conference Scholar Athlete and Academic All-District. • Additionally, three sophomores (Brett Huff, Matt Kraley and Ryan Kenny) and a freshman (Jesse Cooke) saw periodic time on varsity. Matt had the foursomes only two hits of the season while Ryan and Jesse both picked up their first varsity wins on the mound. Jesse’s win made him the first freshman to win a game at the varsity level for NM since 2002.
