1 Two speakers excited to represent class COMMENCEMENT

By Caitlin McCombs Editor-in-Chief Seniors Carlie Shaw and Niral Patel will be sharing the stage at commencement this year as both were selected to give speeches at the ceremony, which will take play tonight at 7 p.m. at L.C. Walker Arena. “It’s really great that I get to speak at commencement because I know a lot of people auditioned, and I heard all the scores were really close, so it was really cool for me to come on top and represent all the others that don’t get to speak,” Shaw said. Patel also said he is excited to represent his class. “It feels really good,” Patel said. “It is like a coming to a full circle at the end of high school, and I get to say my final words before I leave to all of my classmates.” Shaw said she tried to bring in pop culture into her speech.. “I mention a couple pop culture references,” she said. “Some of the senior-voted things, such as the senior song and senior flower, and there is a reference to the theme the senior shirts were supposed to be. I hope that it is inspirational to some people.” Patel said his speech will fo-

tential,” Patel said. Not only is speaking to their peers and having the opportunity to speak at commencement exciting, but it is also important to them. They have the chance to leave lasting words with the class of 2019 and they are thankful. “It is important to me to speak at commencement because I spent like 12 years here at this district, and I worked really hard to get where I am at, and I want to leave some words to be somewhat remembered by” Patel said. “(English teacher Warren) Kent once said he was afraid of a commencement speaker because they have so much power, so they need to understand how that power will impact everyone. He is exactly right, so I want to take that with me as I go up there and leave my words and my impact.” Shaw said speaking at commencement will be the perfect ending to her high school career. “Throughout high school I have not necessarily taken advantage of all the opportunities to be able to be active in the school community, so I feel like this is a really good chance to speak my peace and leave lasting words,” Shaw said.

Patrisha Lozen Submitted by Amber Horton For as long as I can remember, Trisha always had a heart of gold. She always was the first person to offer a kind word or help to those who need it. She is always lifting people up when they are down in anyway she can. Trisha has always made her own path and walked to her own beat. She makes no apologies for who she and she is full of confidence. As for the future Trisha has decided to enter adulthood in her own unique way. Instead of going straight to college Trisha is taking advantage of her youth and new freedom by working, saving up, traveling and learning as many new trades as she can to decide what is best for her career. It may be welding, or working with electricity or writing. Who knows? She said her possibilities are endless, and she’s excited to go down her own road in adulthood as she did in school. This mom is beyond proud of the woman she has become and she will definitely make a positive mark in this world.

Erin Powers Submitted by Lisa Powers Before a soccer practice Erin’s junior year, she decided to take a nap. She ended up sleeping through her alarms and missed the beginning of her practice. When the team realized she had slept in, the girls decided to run from the fields and to our house, where they woke her up and made her get ready for practice. After, nearly 20 girls piled into Erin’s car and rode back to the soccer fields.

Cameron Taskey Submitted by April Taskey When Cameron was four, he put together a Clark Kent and Superman costume. Anytime we were out in public and he would see other kids, he would run up to them and rip off his Clark Kent costume and become Superman. He then would act out the movie for them and they would all be amazed that they had just met Superman.

Tyler Campbell Submitted by Heidi Campbell Tyler has always been a baseball fanatic. His first word wasn’t mom, dad, nana, or papa... it was ball. When he was a toddler we couldn’t go anywhere without a ball, an extra ball, and a third one just in case the first two were lost. He would use anything he could as a bat and ball to play baseball anywhere we were at. He and his brother went to many Tigers games growing up, and he never failed to get one of his favorite player’s autographs. One time in particular he went to watch the Tigers play the White Sox in Chicago with his grandparents. While in his seat he saw Dave Dombrowski (Tigers General Manager at the time)and walked right up to him, started a conversation, and made a new friend. He ended up getting his autograph, which was exciting since Dave doesn’t do this often. He was so extremely excited that he called home right away. Soon after he returned home, Tyler wrote a letter thanking Dombrowski for his time and wishing the team good luck. Tyler quickly got a letter from Dombrowski and a birthday card the next year. Tyler’s grandparents ran into Mr. Dombrowski years later at a spring training game, approached him, and found out he remembered Tyler...turns out Dombrowski’s son’s name is Tyler and it was easy for him to remember the kid in a Tigers jersey and Florida Marlins hat!

Ashtyn Vilneff Submitted by Kindra Vilneff Ashtyn was raised in the hockey rink. She was just 10 days old when she attended her first Fury game to “watch” her dad play. She was able to pose with the championship trophy when she was 2 and 6. We are fortunate that she and her sister can look at pictures and watch some videos that we have of the hockey days as they were a bit too young to remember much. Ashtyn continues to enjoy hockey. She has always supported the high school team and her cousin Erick’s teams. Our family also enjoys watching the Muskegon Lumberjacks.

Raegan Cox Submitted by Vicki Cox Raegan loved her high school experience and showing her Sailor Pride. She and her friends had so much fun and school spirit. Raegan always got super excited about participating in Spirit Weeks, Pep Assemblies and Theme Nights at Football Games with her friends. Raegan and friends were such Super Fans at Football Games that they were allowed to purchase a speaker system for the school and lead the student section at assemblies and football games. Congratulations Raegan and embrace what life brings you next! Love, Mom & Dad

Sincer’e Dent Submitted by Kimora Lang My brother is awesome. Sometimes he can be mean, but I get he’s older than us. He probably wanted one of us to be a boy, but unfortunately, we are all girls. He is a great football player and is known for being the running-back. This football season was probably his best year. Playing football from age 6 to 18, he has improved in my eyes. My brother has always been a jokester and worked hard. He still has and has always had good grades. When he surprises us, he is not very happy. He gives it to us and runs to his kingdom (his room). I remember one time he was so excited to go visit his dad that he lifted me in the air and tossed me around. It was my first time seeing him so excited and happy. On prom he looked so handsome. When he and his girlfriend took pictures, they were so cute. I could tell they were deeply in love. My brother is a little lazy. One thing you need to know about him is that his nickname is “BoBo.” I love him so much. One time he said, “I love you” before he left. For some reason I couldn’t believe it. Then he continued to say, “I love you” everyday. He is always playing Fortnite. I don’t know why Fortnite is addicting to boys, but he loves to play it 24/7. I remember a story my granny told me about him. She said, “When he was little he went to a haunted house, and when they got back, he was crying.” I hope he has amazing life in college. I will miss him, but the best part is I get his room. I hope he continues to become a better young man than he already is.

Victoria Everett Submitted by Tammy Barker Where does the time go? it seems just like yesterday we were playing in mud puddles, catching tree frogs, and playing My Little Ponies together. I remember so well when you were just one and a half years old you would always pull your diaper up one side of your booty and get so mad at me when I would try to fix it. I always said you would grow up to wear thongs. I was right LOL It’s funny looking back now at all the things that made me mad and how I would love to go back and do it all over again. When you were three years old. I was put you to bed, and you put your little hand on my cheek, looked up at me and said: “Mum you are stupid, but that’s okay ‘cuz you’re pretty.” To this day I have no clue where you heard that from, or the time you asked me what “The Minnow” means in the ABCs instead of LMNOP. On another note people could not believe how very smart you were and still are, You could read, write your name, count past a hundred, and so much more by the age of three. Now look at you! You are in Business Professionals of America, excel at violin, and can fiddle. You have been in so many honor programs I can’t remember them all. You are so smart. I would love to take credit for it, but it’s all you! You have work so very hard to get to where you are, and I am so very proud of you. I know you will go on to do great things, and you will succeed at everything you do. I love you so very much, and congratulations on graduating!

TEACHER/PARENT STORIES Favorite Stories of the Class of 2019 as told by parents

Ashley Krueger Submitted by the Krueger Family One story that sticks out in our mind is when we took Ashley to our grandfather’s funeral (yes, we know, not usually a funny time). Ashley has always been very close to all of her grandparents and great-grandparents. She was around 4 years old. We were concerned about taking her, but felt she should go. We took her to say goodbye one last time, and she walked in very loudly and asks in all seriousness, “Does he need batteries?” She lightened up the mood, and everyone got a good laugh. This reminds us of how Ashley always brightens up our day and makes us laugh. She reminds us to not take life so serious and have fun.

Jared Weathers Submitted by Amy Zeanwick When Jared was little he LOVED everything about superheroes. As a parent, Halloween was the best time of the year as there was a wide variety of costumes to choose from! Over the years Jared had many costumes. He spent a lot of time as a Power Ranger (multiple years), Batman, Superman, and even “underwear man”! He would wear his costumes around the house all the time! My favorite costume of all time was when he was the Incredible Hulk. He insisted I dye his hair - I kept telling him he was too little to dye his hair - he wasn’t having any of it! He kept telling me that he couldn’t truly be Hulk without the hair!

Miller VanderMolen Submitted by Mark VanderMolen Dear Miller Theodore VanderMolen, Miller, Miller Man, Miller Time, Buddy Boy and Theodore (only used by a very special teacher, Mrs. Conrad), Many names for a kid with many interests...let’s pick the sports you love, in no particular order. Baseball: played in little league, second base - had a riot but you had other interests as a young kid. Basketball: played into middle school, point guard, awesome court sense and a good shot. Lots of great games of pig in the driveway. Looking forward to many more. Golf: a family loved sport - both grandfathers loved the game and enjoyed many great days on the links with you. Played in school and realized that this is more than a school sport, it’s a life-long sport. Track: a natural runner, showed good speed and quickness before moving on to play Spring Soccer. Tennis: sure you can play, another life long sport. Frolfing: not really sure with this is, but I think it involves a disc and a Frisbee golf course. Good stuff. Volleyball: a new one for you but one you love. You’ve become a solid player in a very short time. Soccer: what can I say? A great field sense, leadership and love for the beautiful game. Played since age 4. Spent many weekends traveling with your Lakeshore Premier teams to tournaments around the Midwest. Enjoyed your three years at the Varsity level at MSHS. Snowboarding: oh yea many great days ripping the groomers in Michigan. Loved the Middle School ski club! Skiing: I really cant put into words. Watching you is so amazing, no poles and pure SHRED! Many awesome memories from Northern Michigan and Colorado. More to come. Surfing: Water is your domain. Surfing is in your blood and will always be your first love. The outdoors is your life, Miller. It will play a huge role in your future. Whatever you choose to do will involve your love of the outdoors and the sports which allow you to spend so much time there. I am so proud of your accomplishments and your passion. One more name, always my special boy. Love, Dad

Ryan Heethouse Submitted by Jack Heethouse Ryan went as Captain Underpants for an elementary Halloween party. His costume was authentic enough that the Principal was shocked that some kid would actually wear just underwear to school. He apparently did not know who the book character was or that Ryan was wearing nude colored tights and a body suit. Ryan was called down to the office and we were called about the inappropriateness of the costume. It took some time, and a multitude of surprised parents, to get Ryan off the hook for this incident. We later heard that the Principal received several copies of the eponymous book for Christmas! Jacob Gilland Submitted by Michelle Gilland You were born 16 weeks early and the Doctors only gave you a 10% chance to survive. They said, “if he makes it, he will never walk or talk.” Here you are 18 years later running strong and proving them wrong. Continue with life proving the them wrong. Congratulations. Love, Mom! Carter Peliotes Submitted by JoAnne Peliotes When Carter was in 5th grade he came home with a Kid-Call from the Principal. The notice was letting us know that Carter had pushed another student because the boy had pushed his friend off the slide. We asked Carter why he did it and he told us; “because he is my friend and the other boy was bigger.” We told Carter that he was not in trouble with mom and dad and that what he did was a brave thing. Carter has always had the mindset that you lookout for one another. We are very proud of the young man he has grown into.

Favorite Stories of the Class of 2019 as told by parents Ashley Melton Submitted by Monica Melton The year was 2008, picture day at Marquette elementary. I received a call from the principal Mrs. Monroe, asking me to come to the school because there was a problem with Ashley. I hung up the phone without asking what was wrong. I just knew I had to get to my daughter. When I entered the office, I noticed everyone was in Mrs. Monroe’s office looking at Ashley with baffled stares. I could only see the back of her. I rushed in, turned Ashley around, and there it was: a small 4” comb tangled in her bang. Ashley told me she was combing her hair for her pictures. Luckily I managed to fix her hair before it was her turn to take her picture! Love you always, MOM #TTMAB

Ke’Sean Sandifer Submitted by Waneesha Nash In life we are always receiving blessings from God, but none could compare to the 21st day of February 2001, when the good Lord blessed me with my one and only precious baby boy, Ke’Sean Jamal Sandifer. It was then that I knew LOVE on a totally different level. Ke’Sean was extremely overdue; and I personally thought maybe he was perhaps just lazy because he took so long to make his entrance. However, as time progressed during my induced labor, I clearly remember the doctor coming in and saying to me they would need to perform an emergency C-section; as my pelvic was too small. I instantly began to cry out of fear; yet I trusted God for this to be a successful process and to soon have a healthy baby boy. After surgery, as they laid him on my chest, I noticed Ke’Sean had bruises all over his head and little arms, as he had made numerous attempts to enter this world. It was in this moment, that God showed me, this was definitely a gift that was worth every cut and stitch I had received; and despite all the bruises he may have had, he was still not broken. The great determination that God placed in him way back then, is the perseverance, fight, and strength that follows his whole life in today’s world. Ke’Sean has faced many obstacles in his life; however, through his faith and trusting in God; he’s managed to overcome each one of them with great diligence. I am utterly proud of what God has done thus far through Ke’Sean, and I know his future is bright for many, many more things to come. There is a great calling on his life; and God has promised to fulfill every promise he’s made to him. Ke’Sean believes and so do I; so with that being said, GO OUT INTO THIS WORLD AND DO WHAT GOD HAS CREATED YOU TO DO KE’SEAN…..HE’S READY TO TAKE YOU HIGHER!!! We love you son!

TEACHER/PARENT STORIES Taylor Keessen Submitted by Kim Keessen One thing I love about Taylor is her openness to new experiences. When she was 10 years old, she and her best friend, Olivia, decided to raise baby ducks. The names were original- Olivia named her duck Skittles, so of course Taylor named hers M&M. They weren’t official pets, really, but those girls treated them like they were. And the ducks thought they were pets too, following the girls around and accepting hugs and affection just like puppies or kittens would. In time, the ducks left to make their own way in the world, but I like to think that M&M remembers the 10-year old girl that loved him. And as Taylor graduates and goes out in the world to learn to spread her own wings, I hope she holds on to all the love she’s been given, and that she keeps the originality that lead her to offer love where it was not expected. As she goes off to Michigan State to continue her own journey, I hope she remembers that 10-year old girl and opens her arms and her mind to everything she’s about to experience.

Lauren Langlois Submitted by Sue Langlois Lauren has always loved art. In 7th grade she took her first woods class and has taken it every year through 11th grade. This year, she took her love one step further and signed up for Construction Trade at the Career Tech Center (CTC). She has learned so many different skills, and together with the afternoon class, built a house. There has always been such a push for college, but recently the trades have come into the spotlight. The need for trade workers is so high and with the addition of a generation getting ready to retire, trade workers are in high demand. Lauren has decided to hold off on college and to start working after graduation. In CTC, they’ve had interviews from several companies and Lauren has already been offered multiple jobs. She has several more interviews lined up and is waiting to weigh out all her options until the end. Her plan is to start working and learning more in an apprenticeship, and then possibly go to college for Construction Management on her employer’s dime. College is not for everyone and trades are a great alternative to a successful career. Mieke Hart Submitted by Arend Hart We have always been so proud of Mieke: good grades, athletic, compassionate, and sensible. It was always other people’s kids who did dumb stuff you hear about on social media. Therefore, it came as a surprise when I was interrupted from picking blueberries with friends to be shown a video of my daughter gripping the steering wheel while being dragged down the street at 15mph – the result of her failed attempt at the “Kiki Challenge.” Apparently our Poindexter didn’t realize that she was supposed to take the car out of “drive” and put it in “neutral” when she attempted this ridiculously dangerous, stupid stunt.

Favorite Stories of the Class of 2019 as told by parents Avery Agard Submitted by Jennifer Agard Each year at St. Francis, the kids and teachers put on a “Moms and Muffins” event to celebrate Mother’s Day. It was clear they had worked hard preparing for the big day, by making decorations, several gifts, learning special songs and poems, and they even put on a little play. The teachers had coached the kids about how special their moms were and encouraged them to really “spoil” all of us. We sat at tables while they waited on us. I remember how proud and excited they all were to take such good care of their moms that day. Avery was all smiles! At the time, I remember thinking that I couldn’t believe how old she was and was struggling to wrap my head around the fact that kindergarten was drawing to a close. It truly feels like I blinked and here we are at the end of senior year. Bittersweet, for sure.

Noah Gustin Submitted by Elizabeth Nunnery From the day that he was born, Noah would talk to just about anyone. It didn’t matter where we were, or who the person was, he was always the first one to strike up a conversation. Noah would tell anyone who would listen, his entire name. He liked to give out his address. Every single person who met him, knew that his favorite color was green, and that when he grew up, he wanted to be Buzz Lightyear. We had the stranger talks. We stressed about the dangers of talking to strangers. Noah listened, but instead of stopping his habit of chatting, he just changed how he started his conversations. He would stick out his little hand, and give whomever was lucky enough to cross his path a firm handshake, and ask their name first, which, in his mind, didn’t make them a stranger anymore, because he now knew their name. Needless to say, we could never let him out of our sight. While it terrified me, I loved how he only saw the good in the world. He only saw the good in other people, and, within the first five years of life, he developed one heck of a handshake. I hope that as he starts out on this new adventure, he remembers that it’s ok to meet new people, and to experience new things. I also hope that he remembers to use that handshake of his. He’s got it down pat! We love you to the moon, Noah! Love, Mom & Dad

TEACHER/PARENT STORIES

Marisa VanderMolen Submitted by Mary VanderMolen Dear Marisa, The thought first entered my mind in the Spring of 2016. I was in the stands watching you run in your first City Track Meet at Holton High School. A team filled with upperclassmen, you were the only Freshmen competing for the Mona Shores’ girls that night. I was so happy for you and even shed a tear or two, filled with pride as I watched you compete so skillfully that night. Fast forward to XC season when Coach Jazz asked me if I’d be willing to help out with the track team the next Spring. Saying yes to that offer is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Being there with you at practice and meets over the last three years has been an amazing experience. I count my blessings every day that I get to be with you and your teammates, watching you work hard and compete at the highest level. Through rain, snow, cold, heat and every imaginable form of Michigan spring weather, I’ve enjoyed every minute of it. I’ll never forget the heavy rain and timing delays at Loy Norrix, the wind at the Wyoming Relays, or the cold rain that took days to recover from at Reeths Puffer. Even the long bumpy bus rides were fun. I loved watching you emerge as a team leader in your quiet, unassuming way. I loved watching you interact with your teammates and coaches; watching your relay exchanges as you became the ultimate TEAM player, often running all four relays; watching your beautiful stride and perfect form as you rounded the track. I loved seeing the emotion after your last race at the 2019 City Meet. As this special time nears its end I will continue to cherish every moment and am forever grateful for the opportunity to coach you, my amazing daughter. Love, Mom

Samarie Lewis Submitted by Kimberly J. Lewis Samarie J. Lewis is a very loving person and enjoys being loved by those close to her. She is very considerate of others and their feelings. Not too many people can pronounce her name correctly when they first see it. This is something that would irritate her when she was a little girl. She would always ask, “why can’t people say my name correctly?” Samarie was given her name by her Godmother, Ellie. Ellie took Samarie’s grandfather’s first name, “Sam”, and Samarie’s grandmother’s middle name, “Marie”, and combined the two names and came up with “Samarie”! I was so excited to have both of my parent’s names as part of my firstborn, and she is truly a blessing and loved by her family!

Sophie Scheuerle Submitted by Jim Scheuerle This day is finally here, the papers are all written, the AP tests are all completed, marching band, wind ensemble and orchestra wind performances complete. From soccer to volleyball, track and tennis your games and matches are now finished. Through the years we have encouraged you to work hard, and did you ever. You are a shining example of what can be achieved through hard work, dedication and service to others. While the path has not been easy, you always faced the challenge head on. Our hearts are filled with pride at not only what you have accomplished, but also showing others what a caring person you are. The accomplishments you have achieved over the years are many, creating a path to a bright future. This is your time to shine and show the world your talent, compassion and drive. There simply not enough words to express how happy and proud we are of you today and always. We love you, now go out and shine. SpartansWill...SophieWill.

Caiden Morin Submitted by Dawn Goodwin Before he knew what they were, Caiden loved trains. We wore out many copies of “The Little Engine That Could,” and the highlight of his preschool years was getting to “meet” Thomas the Tank Engine at Greenfield Village. As a young man, Caiden is just like that little engine. No matter the odds, he keeps chugging up those hills. Over the years I’ve watched him become someone both dependable and trustworthy, whether it’s from the pitcher’s mound with two runners on or from the passenger seat when the phone has no signal and somewhere in these mountains our plane leaves in an hour and Mom is starting to freak out a little bit. Caiden has faced his fair share of mountains, and he has done it with purpose and determination. His family could not be more proud. We love you, Caiden! Isaac Osbo Submitted by his mom Isaac, you have been one of my greatest blessings in this world. You have had ups and downs throughout your years of school. We’ve moved around to different houses, divorce, etc., but nothing stopped you. You always strive to do your best! You cared so much about how your projects turned out in grade school, and it made me so proud that you cared so much. Always my procrastinator but you did your best, and it was perfect, and I would get frustrated but laugh because that’s who you are. That’s something I always remember, and you never had a bad conference. Always heard how the teachers loved having you in their class. Never a complaint. How awesome is that?! My son you are now graduating from school. What a HUGE accomplishment! Now on your way to the next step in life and I know you will be great. I am so very proud of you my Isaac. I have no words to express how proud I am of you! My funny, smart, handsome, sweet, hardworking, kind hearted young man who is a great influence on your siblings! You came so far, and so much more is to come, and you will be great! Love, your biggest fan, Mom

“My favorite part of newspaper has been having a break from my normal type of classes and being able to have a class where stuff gets done in a fun way. The atmosphere of the class is super fun, and we have all bonded into a big family. I will never forget the countless memories I have made throughout my three years of newspaper.” Kali Jend, Staff Writer

“Newspaper was nothing like any other class I took in high school. It gave me a voice, it helped me meet new people, and most importantly, it gave me a family. The atmosphere Kent creates in newspaper helps all of us get out of our comfort zones. Without newspaper, I would not be the person I am today. I will always remember the memories we made in room 501.” Caitlin McCombs, Editor-in-Chief

“My favorite part about newspaper was having the class with a lot of my friends and learning how to use the monarch program that makes the newspaper.” Erick Hannahs, Staff Writer

“Mr. Kent, I’m sorry that I never managed to make even one deadline. Even this quote and picture were late.” Marisa Vandermolen, Staff Writer

SENIOR STAFF FAREWELL

2018-2019 Senior Staff

“I honestly decided to take newspaper because I wanted an easy class, but I soon realized how much I loved it. We have become a family, and I’ll always remember the crazy memories we’ve made together, whether it be playing Survivor, remaking Vines, or hearing the ridiculous stories Kent makes up for the end-of-the-year party.” Samantha Ladegast, Page Editor

“Newspaper was one of the few classes I have taken throughout high school that was actually exciting. I am so grateful for not only the opportunities that have been afforded to me through newspaper but also for the amazing staff that supported me, challenged me to be a better student and person, and made my high school experience far more enjoyable.” Mieke Hart, Staff Writer

“Newspaper was my home-awayfrom-home. It gave me some of my best friends and opened doors that otherwise would have not been opened. Mr. Kent was like a second father to all of us, and there is nothing I’ll miss more than walking into 501 every day.” Emmalee Dykstra, Page Editor

“I enjoyed newspaper because it gave me the freedom to explore topics that would never come up in another class, and it allowed me to get to know the student body better because of the various interviews and stories.” Erin Powers, Page Editor
