WELCOME TO KRABI Krabi is one of the moist spectacular places in Thailand, if not the world. Nope, that’s not a typo, I mean moist. As the end of the hot & dry season draws to a close, the familiar sounds of distant rumbling thunder become more frequent, as do the 4pm downpours that mark the beginning of our green season. While this is just a hint of the months to come, the weather is still very much ripe for sunbathing and getting out and about to enjoy our spectacular province, and we have been doing just that so we can report back to you on our findings. We’re good like that… Moist is most definitely the name of the game this month as the wonderfully soggy Songkran festival returns to the country with a splash. Everyone takes the day off to hit the streets and take part in the Thai New Year festivities that culminates in the biggest water-throwing party in the world. We have been in the midst of it for the past 7 years, and our article on this amazing day is filled with info, tips and advice on how to make the most of it without returning with a waterlogged camera. We travel outside of Ao Nang to the locality of Ao Nammao to see what we can see. The name of this place literally means “Drunken Water”, which is enough to tempt us to take a look at what that’s all about - and we are not disappointed. A glimpse into Thai life without tourism is perfect for a day away from the crowds, and you may be surprised at what we find there… We continue our trip onwards to the idyllic island of Koh Lanta to check out the diving, caves and seafood, and return full and happy. Our local conservation volunteers take us through the intricacies of turtle-scrubbing, and our Muay Thai Guy introduces us to a world class champ. To top it all off, we get treated to a devilishly delicious dinner at new lounge bar & grill, ‘The Red Devil’, which offers a refreshing alternative to the usual fare of Chang beer and Pad Thai. Our reviewer tells all... If you are looking to stay longer than a holiday, our very own Property Guru is on hand with some top tips on getting your own place in paradise, and we have some very interesting news on a brand new hospital opening up right here in Krabi. With all this inside, as well as the usual detailed info on An Nang, Krabi, Koh Lanta and more - this months issue is a cracker, if we say so ourselves. So sit back, relax, flick through the pages and prepare to be inspired!

WINDOW ON KRABI
THEŃ?BEACHES Ao Nang, at 20km from Krabi Town, is the most developed of Krabi’s beaches, a long stretch of white sandy beach with limestone mountains as a backdrop. It has a wide range of accommodation and services and the main shopping street features restaurants, bars, pubs, souvenir shops, dive centers and tour agencies, massage centers and spas. This is the hub from which to plan your trip at sea and to the nearby islands on a typical longtail boat. Noppharat Thara beach, just around the corner from Ao Nang, is 3km long yet still undeveloped, with only a few resorts and bars. Attractive because of its natural setting, this is where local youngsters and families gather at sunset and at weekends. Savour some local Muslim snacks at the beach stalls, or fill yourself with seafood in the local restaurants at the very end of the beach, near the Noppharat Thara National Park headquarters. At low tide, walk out together with millions of small crabs on the sandy pathways to the small islands near the beach. Railay beaches are split and separated from Krabi and Ao Nang by monumental limestone mountains. Railay has two sides, east and west, and its settings are simply marvelous: crystal clear waters, pure sandy beaches, lush mountains, rocky islands emerging from the sea. Railay can only be reached by boat, a 15 minutes ride from Ao Nang or 30 minutes from Krabi Town. Enjoy a cocktail in one of the beach bars, visit the Phranang Cave, challenge yourself on a rock climbing course, hike the limestone massif to a lagoon and a viewpoint, or simply chill out. Neighbouring Tonsai lies at the base of a cliff that divides it form Railay West. Tonsai has a shallow beach with slow gradients out to sea which is profoundly affected by the tide. Klong Muang beach is a further 20km away from Ao Nang; it is the up-market side of Krabi, the place to be if you are after a peaceful holiday. Catering to families and couples, it is here that you really get the so deserved repose, surrounded by pristine nature. Tubkaek beach is another real place to hide away; long, clean and peaceful, the area has breathtaking views over Koh Hong islands archipelago, and charming sunsets. From there you can venture inside the National Park and try a walking trail to a viewpoint and a waterfall. Koh Lanta beaches have a wide selection of resorts for all tastes and pockets. Lanta Yai island has long stretches of gleaming white sandy beaches and shallow emerald waters. Lined with tropical vegetation, a private spot is never more than a short walk away on a southern beach at Lanta Yai.
NATURAL HOTSPOTS
Limestone mountains or karsts characterize most of the inland Krabi area, the most spectacular being the massifs of Sai Tai. Susaan Hoi is a 40 million year-old seashell cemetery; once a large swamp where freshwater crustaceans proliferated, today home to 40 centimeter thick, shell encrusted limestone slabs, a geological uniqueness not far from Ao Nang. One must find a broken edge to see the shells clearly, since all of those on the upper surface have been walked on and worn down by the elements and are hard to identify. Khao Phanom Bencha National Park, at 20km from Krabi Town, comprises waterfalls, streams, lush forests and caves. It is home to all kind of flora and wildlife and to the highest mountain in the region from which it takes the name. One of the features of the park is Huay Toh Waterfall where water runs down onto several huge pools. Tarnbok Khoranee National Park, in the north of the region, consists of limestone mountains, verdant tropical forest, caves and beautiful islands. It is well known for its different species of trees growing around a large natural crystal clear pool, and for the hundreds of birds’ species. Phi Hua Toh Cave, in the nearby Bor Thor area, surrounded by mangrove swamps and reachable by boat or kayak, is where to see pre-historic rock paintings depicting animals and humans. Sa Morakot, the Emerald Pool, is a natural wonder: a pond of turquoise water with an average temperature of 30-40C, fed by a hot spring in the middle of the jungle. Hot Springs of Klong Thom, natural Jacuzzis in which to lift away tensions and relieve body and mind with the mineral enriched waters falling into rocky ponds.
THE ISLANDS
Hop on or hire a longtail, the local wooden boats with their picturesque prows. Sail away to Koh Poda, surrounded by turquoise waters, or to Koh Kai, shaped as a chicken and therefore called the Chicken Island, from where a walk on a sandy pathway connects it to Koh Tub. Make a longtail boat or speedboat trip to the Koh Hong archipelago, a group of limestone islands with hidden caves and lagoons perfect for kayaking or snorkeling. Join an organized tour to amazing Koh Phi Phi islands, full of marvelous bays, limestone cliffs, waters rich in marine life, caves where swallow nests are
harvested, and much more. Visit Koh Jum and Koh Siboya, small, unspoiled tropical hideaway that have a unique atmosphere. These islands give visitors the time to relax and re-charge their batteries. Or venture out on Koh Lanta, the developing island at the southern end of the province home to sea gypsies communities, where you will meet nature and tradition. A National Park area that comprises many different islands surrounded by coral reefs, such as Koh Ngai and remote Koh Rok.
THE CULTURE
Ban Natin, on the way from Ao Nang to Klong Muang, is the place to experience the peaceful lifestyle of the local Muslim community. Home accommodation is available, or you can simply make a stopover and see the production of handmade products such as batik paintings, pineapple-fiber paper and coconut shell carving. Wat Klong Thom Museum features various kinds of beads, stone tools, and stone and earthen ornaments in animal shapes of approximately 5,000 years old, uncovered during archeological excavations. Fire dancing, part of the beach culture, is a popular evening activity on the beaches of Koh Lanta and Koh Phi Phi, performed by acrobatic boys who swing burning torches around their bodies, creating sparkling artistic pictures. Ban Sang-Ka-U is a sea gypsy’s settlement in south-east Lanta Yai. It is there that an old clan of traditional v Ley try to preserve a disappearing way of life in this fast-developing island.
THE TOWN
Small, charming, silent at times, nice for a day’s walking tour. Krabi Town is full of old buildings, bars and restaurants, local exotic marketplaces and food stalls at the old Chao Fa pier where to sample the local food. The Krabi motto is: “lovely town, lovely people”; Krabi’s simple people are definitely proud of their town and of their warm and generous character. Hop on a longtail boat at Chao Fa pier and visit Khao Kanab Nam, the unique pair of hills facing each other on the opposite banks of the Krabi River, symbols of the town; or embark on a journey to Koh Klang, an island next to town on the mouth of the river, where you will experience lives lived by the local fishing communities; or charter a boatman for a visit to the mangrove backwaters.

Krabi Province is a haven for sun worshippers and pleasure seekers and is also one of the world’s best destinations for activities such as rock-climbing, scuba diving and kayaking. Krabi Magazine gives you our top 10 list of activities to try here in Krabi: KAYAKING This is a hugely popular activity in Krabi. The mangroves, caves and of course the beaches, provide plenty of great opportunities for kayaking. The Ao Nang/Railay area is popular as it’s close and convenient but if you’re feeling a little more adventurous, book yourself on a tour to Ao Thalane or Bor Thor in Tarn Boke Koranee National Park. The caves, grottoes and lagoons make for a great day of fun and adventure. WAT THAM SUEA A hike to Wat Tham Seua or Tiger Cave Temple is exhausting, exhilarating and ultimately hugely rewarding. Once you’ve climbed the 1,257 steps that lead to the hilltop temple you’ll be met by stunning views over the surrounding countryside. The glorious Thai countryside having transformed into swathes of lush greenery by the monsoon rain. Combine the temple with trips to other destinations like Sa Morakot or visit as a separate Krabi Town day trip and combine with trips to the market.
12
SUNSET STROLL ALONG AO NANG ESPLANADE/NOPPHARAT THARA BEACH Sunsets over Ao Nang and Nopharrat Thara are probably some of the best you are ever likely to see. The monsoon rain brings storm clouds that hang ominously over the bay creating dynamic sunsets that bathe the bay in sumptuous light. Walk along the esplanade to get some great views of the longtail boats bobbing on the water or just sit on a bench and watch as the sky transforms.
EVENING IN THE LAST FISHERMAN BAR/SEA FOOD RESTAURANTS AT NOPPHARAT THARA AND AO NANG After a sunset stroll there’s no better way to finish off your evening than chatting over a cocktail or two or indulging in some great seafood. If you finish your walk in Ao Nang continue along the road by the police box until you come to the Last Fisherman Bar, one of Ao Nang’s best night-spots. It’s the perfect place to relax and enjoy a drink by the ocean. The seafood restaurants at the other side of Ao Nang Beach or by the very end of Noppharat Thara beach are a must for a local fish fare. ROCK CLIMBING AND RAILAY BEACH Combine a trip to Railay Beach with some rock climbing and serious beach time and then sample some of the local nightlife. Krabi is among the World’s best destinations for
climbing. The Railay peninsular is home to the local climbing scene and is considered a mecca for the sport. There are hundreds of bolted routes in the Railay area as well as rock-climbing schools that can provide guides and equipment. Railay, once the sole preserve of backpackers has become a favourite holiday destination, combining 2 world class beaches, excellent dining and some funky after hours haunts to down a few bottles of local brew.
‘Emerald Pool’ is fed by a natural spring and gets its name from the glorious colour of its water. Perfect for swimming, it makes a great day out and a nice break from the beach. The rainy season is a great time to go; more water and less people. The best way to visit is on a tour, making it easy to combine it with a trip to nature’s own hot tub – the namtok ron (hot springs) a series of splash pools fed by a natural thermal spring.
MARKETS Experiencing the hustle and bustle of a local market is great fun. Krabi and Ao Nang are blessed with some great markets and (Krabi town boasts the biggest covered market in southern Thailand) There’s a market operating on any given day of the week selling everything from fruit and vegetables, household items, clothes and shoes, snacks, BBQ meat, Muslim curries and more. Try the Thursday market or Saturday markets in Klong Haeng.
KOH HONG ARCHIPELAGO No trip to Krabi or Ao Nang is complete without a trip to Koh Hong, the stunning group of islands lying off the Krabi coast. The beaches of Kong Hong never cease to amaze visitors with their crystal clear water and stunning white sand. The beaches in Ao Nang can become rough and windy in the wet season but the beaches on the islands lying in the Andaman Sea remain calm and good for swimming. Koh Hong has two glorious beaches a lagoon and national park land – a real island paradise.
SA MORAKOT A trip to Sa Morakot or the ‘Crystal Pool’ can be combined with trips to other beauty spots such as the hot springs. The so called
LOCAL NIGHTLIFE If drinking prodigious amounts of local brew is on your agenda then seek out one of Krabi Town or Ao Nang’s more lively night spots.
In Ao Nang, Luna Bar is a popular joint for movers who want to bust some shapes on the dancefloor. Vodka or whiskey buckets are usually the order of the day. If you want to party Thai style then head to Centerpoint in Ao Nang or Kansas Saloon in Krabi Town. Air-con ad non, with lots of whiskey on ice flowing, these places are an experience. Live music, dj sets and semi-clad dancing girls are what you can expect. For a less salubrious night out, try Soi Salai opposite McDonald’s in Ao Nang. This clusters of neon-lit ‘beerbars’ are often friendly and good fun and many have cable TV and free pool on offer. The next place for entertainment are the bamboo huts opposite Siam Commercial Bank for a relaxed chillout evening. LONGTAIL BOAT TRIP TO KRABI MANGROVES The mangroves that fringe the coastline of the various islands divided by the maze of canals are thick and impenetrable. A nature longtail boat tour of the Krabi mangrovespopulated canals, with great views of local wildlife and scenery, will enhance your Krabi experience. Charter a boat driver at Chaofa old pier for the longtail trip, usually lasting 3 hours.

Wines
of Excellence at the Pimalai
T
he Pimalai was delighted to welcome Mr Chee Wee Lee recently, as he brought with him a wealth of knowledge on the wine industry as well as a few bottles of some of the best wines you would be likely to taste for a very long time. Mr Wee is the founder of the company ‘Vino Cave’, a representative of some of the best wine producers from the Rhone Valley, the USA and Burgundy. His career in the wine industry was cemented for him on just his 4th day on the job, when he was fortunate enough to sample an excellent 1970 Chateau d’Yquem from France. This was enough for him to decide that a life in wine, so to speak, was just for him. Lee started out as a wine distributor before his own company came to fruition when he snared the exclusive distribution rights to some of the world’s best wineries. He went on to complete the Burgundy Wine Educator and Certified Wine Specialist programs amongst others, and has sat on the judging panel of the wonderfully titled ‘World Gourmet Summit for Excellence for Sommelier Scholarship’, as well as the Conseil Interprofessionnel de vin de Alsace (CIVA)and is also a regular guest speaker for the Singapore Airlines In-Flight Sommelier program.
The mains of grilled charolais tenderloin filled with quail breast, pomme Anna, confit of garlic, shallots and eggplant with a morel jus was already a mouthful - literally and figuratively! Needless to say it tasted as amazing as it sounds and the Guigal Crozes Hermitage 2007 that was paired with it only served to add to the experience. This spicy red was intense in it’s flavour and weight, and had an appealing rustic personality. To finish, we were treated to a selection of imported French Cheeses as well as a wonderful Guigal Gigondas 2007 to go with them. Dense plum in colour and with a nose that hinted of crushed rock, raspberries and blueberries, this was a full-bodied wine of exceptional purity that left a multi-layered texture on the palate.
Mr Lee gave a fascinating speech in which he extolled the virtues of the South West of France as one of the finest areas for producing wines of excellence in the world. This evening it was all about the wines of the Guigal winery based there; a family enterprise that has been passed down through the generations to the current head of the family at the moment, one Ethel Guigal. Ethel started under the tutelage of his father when he was only 14 years old and has been in the family business ever since. This is a man who knows his grapes! With the explanations over with, the fun part began with the first paring. An appetizer of a layer of Alaska king crab meat, avocado and salmon roe was beautifully complimented by a Guigal Saint Joseph Blanc 2009. This wine, which is aged in both steel and oak barrels, was elegant and light with nutty, fresh flavours that worked perfectly. The Entree of grilled rock lobster tail with wilted fennel and pomelo salad was serve with an excellent Guigal Cote du Rhone Blanc 2009 that was perfect. Fresh tropical fruit and honey notes made this medium bodied wine a complex and flavourfilled accompaniment.
THE EVENING WAS A RESOUNDING SUCCESS that stood as a testament to the skill and dedication of Mr. Lee and the lifetime work of the Guigal family. The exceptional setting of the Pimalai resort was perfect for the evening and could not have been better.
10THѝANNIVERSARYѝDINNER
S
ometimes the days are so busy in this job that there is little time to do anything resembling relaxing, but that comes with the territory, I suppose. Then again, sometimes an opportunity comes along to combine work with a little something else, and when that ‘something else’ turns out to be an invite to stay at one of the most luxurious hotels in the world, then hey - who am I to argue? General Manager of the prestigious Pimalai Resort & Spa, Franck de Lestapis, welcomed me to his 5-star resort and very kindly put me up in one of his amazing villas for the night. Not content with having just one place to call your own for the duration of your stay, the Pimalai offers each guest 2 separate bungalows - one for the daytime and another for the night. My day bungalow was fitted with a spacious living area complete with a state-of-the-art entertainment system that included a 25 inch TV and a CD/DVD player, as well as a fully equipped kitchen with all appliances and utensils for your own private dining experience. After the sun sets, the night bungalow offers the weary a sumptuous 4-poster bed to drift off in, as well as a beautiful bathroom and even a walk-in wardrobe.
There are 5 different levels of accommodation on offer at the Pimalai - starting with luxury and escalating to unadulterated opulence. Each guest has the choice of staying in either Deluxe, Bayfront Deluxe, Pavillion Suites, Beach Villa or Pool Villas. Whatever the choice, you will not be disappointed. To top it off, each villa has it’s own private pool to cool off in if the heat of the day gets a little too much. All-in-all a very creative use of space and one that will stand out in the minds of any guest who stays there. It’s worth noting that the Pimalai is not your run-of-the-mill resort. Yes, there are plenty of luxury places springing up all over Thailand, but none quite like the Pimalai. The Pimalai was founded and build by Bangkok corporate lawyer, Anurat Tiyaphorn over 10 years ago to exacting specifications. An avid nature lover, he was adamant that his new brainchild was to have zero negative impact on the lush green vegetation of the Koh Lanta of 10 years ago. To this extent, he managed to have this mammoth project come to fruition without felling a single tree in the process. That’s right - if a tree came in the way of the architect’s plans, then the plans were ordered to be changed, rather than the tree cut down.
As well as this, the ground for the foundations of the resort’s villas was to stay as hillside, with no leveling to take place. The staff are all trained in eco-friendly initiatives that help to reduce the overall environmental impact of the entire resort to a tiny footprint that is the envy of it’s peers. The end result of the final creation was a place completely immersed and connected with the nature surrounding it unlike any other place we know. There was a very special reason for my invite, namely the 10th Anniversary of the opening of the resort. An auspicious occasion indeed, and one that was to be celebrated in Pimalai’s inimitable style. Walking into the sumptuous dining room we were greeted by the gentle sounds of a talented Jazz quartet from Bangkok, who played a selection of classics throughout the evening. The sultry sounds were floating on a very welcoming breeze that helped to ease the tropical heat of the day. We were invited to whet our appetites with a selection of canapés that were expertly crafted and a delight for the senses. A great start to an evening that went on not to disappoint. We were then treated to an open-buffet style meal that included a mouth-watering selection of cold meats, including imported Spanish salami, spalla cotta, loin and parma ham with a selection of sauces to compliment them. Any meal in the south of Thailand would not be complete without the addition of something from the sea, and this evening was no exception. There was a fish station that presented us with a beautiful array of more seafood than I thought were possible to eat in a single sitting! The chef was talented - this was evident and we enjoyed the sampling immensely. To complement the fish & meats, we were also treated to a selection of fine imported cheeses, fruits and nuts that worked perfectly with the wines on offer. As well as myself, there were a few guests of honour in attendance - including a couple from New Zealand who were the very first people to book at the Pimalai when it opened it’s doors 10 years ago. They were very happy to return to the resort and relive old memories of days gone by, and it was fascinating talking with them. The owners of the Pimalai were also in attendance, and Franck gave a wonderful speech that clearly spoke of his passion and dedication to the Pimalai and the 380 staff under his employ. A wonderful evening that was a testament to the 10 years of tireless service to those that demand the finest of what Thailand has to offer - the Pimalai Resort & Spa really is one-in-a-million.

FESTIVAL
Water difference a day makes...
Songkran If you are reading this in it’s print form, then there is a very good chance that you are in Thailand at one of the best times of the year. Yes, it’s hot and humid - but the perfect cure to your sticky woes is right around the corner in the form of “Songkran” - the water festival.
Songkran is one of the most popular festivals in the Thai year, and with good reason. Not only does it come when the weather is hot and sticky, but it’s a day that is unashamedly fun and is impossible not to get caught up in. Songkran translates from the ancient language of Sanskrit as “New Year”, and this is exactly what it’s all about - it’s the Thai New Year holiday. In the morning of April 13th every year, Thai families will attend their local temples for blessings and cleansing rituals that include the very gentle and elegant pouring of water over the head and shoulders to symbolise the cleansing of the body and spirit, in preparation for the new year ahead. Afterwards, though, things get a little less elegant! The streets fill with throngs of people of every age, wielding all manner of weapons. Some carry plastic bottles, some buckets and others - usually the kids - wield massive water-machine-guns that are nearly bigger than themselves. The roads are made a one-way route, the music blares from massive roadside speakers and the fun begins! This is definitely not a day to wear your finest designer clothes and test out your shiny new camera on the streets. No, this is a day to wear an old T-shirt, shorts, flip flops and a smile - not much else! Much like Christmas morning when the “going to church” part is over and the present opening begins, this part is what Songkran has become famous for - the general chucking of vast amounts of water at absolutely anyone within range for the best part of 12 hours.
24
The day is all about fun, fun, fun, as shrieks, laughs, howls and the odd swear word fills the air when gallons of water gets propelled from the aforementioned buckets, guns, hoses and bottles over everything and everyone. You will get soaked and will soak others in return. Don’t be surprised if some come up to wipe a white paste on your face, as this is symbolic of a blessing for the new year, and is always done with care and the words, “Sawadee Pi Mai!”, meaning “Happy New Year!” Just be careful not to get any in our eyes, as it will sting. It washes out very easily though, as it is only a mentholated talcum powder mixed with water. Even the hardest hearts will find it difficult not to crack a smile on Songkran day, and that’s what it’s all about - the breaking down of inhibitions and a reminder to not take life too seriously. Around Ao Nang, you will find water pistols and guns of varying proportions on sale for several days in the run up to the 13th, so you have plenty of time to arm yourself before the big day. On the day itself, you will find large barrels of water placed on the street outside shops and restaurants that can be used - after asking permission - as refueling stations for your weapon of choice. Everyone is a target on Songkran - even the policemen dressed in their immaculate uniforms will end up a soggy, powdercovered state at the end of the day; although it’s always a good idea to ask him first before unloading your 4 litre super-soakerdeluxe cannon in his face… While the day is all about having fun, there are a few tips I can give you on how to make the most of it so you have a safe and stress-free time.
If you are at all not happy about the idea of getting wet, the only thing you can do on Songkran day is stay inside. That’s it. As soon as you step outside, you are immediately fair game… If you are looking for a little respite from the constant soaking, then duck into the nearest restaurant or bar, as these indoor areas are generally off-limits to canon-wielding infants. Like I mentioned before, this is not the day to take out your expensive new camera for a test run, unless it’s in some sort of waterproof cover. If you want to take photos, you can buy plastic pouches for most compact cameras in many of the shops along the beach front, as well as most dive stores in the area.
It’s worth noting that hoards of young boys usually arrive from the outlying towns and villages on this day so they can ogle the hundreds of foreign ladies wearing not much at all. There has been a practice of drunken requests for hugs by these mini lotharios, but this is not tradition at all - more an attempt at copping a quick feel. Don’t encourage them by wearing very revealing clothes and refuse any hug-requests. Follow these simple, common sense tips and you will have a blast - I promise. Happy New Year!
If you’re bringing items like your wallet, purse and mobile phone with you, then take them in a plastic bag or better yet, a “dry bag” that you can buy at most shops in Ao Nang. It’s a good idea to not ride your moped around town, as you will still be a target. Although there is an unspoken rule that riders should not have water thrown at them, it happens more often than not. Add to this the fact that the roads will be very slippery, as well as an increased number of drunk-drivers weaving around and you have a recipe for disaster. Park the bike and walk - it’s safer and much more fun to boot. Ao Nang is predominantly a Muslim community, so try to respect their traditions and wear a little more than your favourite skimpy bikini or Speedos. Guys, keep your T-shirts and shorts on and gals, wrap a sarong around your waist if you can. (This actually goes for every other day in the year too!) The fact that you are constantly soaked in cool water and mentholated power can make you forget that the Thai sun will get you in the end. Slather plenty of strong sunscreen on before you leave your room in the morning, and bring it with you in a dry bag to reapply throughout the day. April 14th in Ao Nang is usually filled with lobster-people limping around in the shadows. Don’t become one of them… While almost everyone is fair game for a soaking on Songkran day, it’s good manners to ask before drenching an elderly Thai. They will most likely agree with a smile, upon when you should pour a little water over their shoulders. They will very much appreciate your manners and you will have garnered favour with the Gods at the same time. Never a bad thing…
25
You may not have been here, or even heard about it, but there is a small, quiet little place not far from the busy streets of Ao Nang that is like a different world away.

DESTINATION Text & Photos by : Paul Stretton
Ao Nammao Wonderfully translating as “The drunken water” thanks to its long and lazy tidal patterns, Ao Nammao is an area a few kilometers east of Ao Nang, and has long been relatively untouched by developers, leaving a quiet coastal village that was a world away from the hustle & bustle of Ao Nang. If you’ve ever wondered where the Thai staff that help you in your hotel, resort or restaurant live, then this is one of those places. Ao Nammao itself is actually not that difficult to find, as you simply leave Ao Nang on the “Mc Donalds” road until you come to a junction with the “Red Devil” lounge and bar on the corner (impossible to miss!). Turn right here and follow the long road until you get to the roundabout. This is pretty much it - you have arrived! Depending on what day you go, you might be faced with the local market right in front of you at the roundabout itself. They are here every Wednesday & Sunday afternoon and are a terrific way to see local people selling local products, fruits, vegetables and pretty much anything else you can imagine. If you are here on a Thursday, you might be lucky enough to catch another local custom - the mysterious bird singing competition. Here, dozens of brightly coloured birds chirp away in ornate cages while a judge inspects them before decreeing an overall champ. There are loads of little roadside restaurants here that you really should take the time to investigate if the nibbles are about to strike. Ok, so they might look a little more “intimidating” than the ones at the beachfront in Ao Nang, as there will most likely be nothing written in English and not a white face to be seen. But rest assured that you will find as warm a welcome as anywhere in these little places, and a smile coupled with pointing at what you want will be just fine.
These vendors, for years traditionally catering for the local workers, are starting to become more and more used to the sight of foreigners around their little town, and I have yet to find any place here that will not treat you like a guest in their own home. The food will be a lot cheaper than in the touristy areas, and “Thai-style” to boot - meaning fairly heavy on the chillies! So remember to recite the mantra of any Westerner with an aversion to the hot stuff ordering food in Thailand, “Mai Phet”, which means “not spicy”! With recent development, Ao Nammao now has the addition of a few more cafes, restaurants and guesthouses that cater well for the more cash-conscious traveler. These offer cheaper rooms with extra trimmings such as WiFi, good coffee and satellite TV. While there is not and awful lot to do here, there are little gems such as horse-riding on the beach, the beach itself which is usually deserted except for some local fishermen, an aquarium and the famous fossil-shell beach. Another plus point to Ao Nammao is its longtail station for rides to Railay, Ao Nang, Krabi, the local islands and even PhiPhi. A lot quieter than the hectic Beach Road in Ao Nang, this place positively wallows in the “Thai-ness” of the town, with the longtail drivers lounging around or sleeping on the benches until galvanized into action by the ticket-seller and/or impatient customers. All-in-all, Ao Nammao is well worth a visit during your time here in Krabi, and it a refreshing sideways-glance at Thai life that everyone visiting this amazing country should experience.

ACTIVITY
Something Fishy in Ao Nammao… If you are after a little something different from the beach scene during your stay, did you know that there is a place you can go to see all the tropical fish in the sea without even getting your feet wet?
Even after I had been living in Ao Nang for some time, it took me some time to even realize that there was an aquarium here. Granted, it’s not in the most prominent location for tourists visiting the area - but it’s a gem of a find. The National Fisheries Department run the place, and it’s a great initiative. They are rehabilitating dozens of different species of marine life there for re-introduction back into the ocean when they are mature enough. I hadn’t been there for a long time so I grabbed my camera, hopped on my bike and off I chugged in the direction of Ao Nammao. Once in Ao Nammao, you simply keep following your nose until you see a giant Nemo glaring at you from the side of the road. You have arrived… Yes, Nemo has been well and truly found, and has expanded to elephantine proportions since his Hollywood debut. He stands guard at a very unassuming gate with a faded sign that croaks “Aquarium” and an arrow pointing upwards. Thank Heavens that Nemo is there, otherwise one just may not bother investigating inside. Driving in past a sleepy guard and following the faded arrows, I soon came to another obvious sign that I was indeed in the right place - an entrance guarded by 2 enormously colourful fish. I parked by bike in the shade and took a deep swallow of water from the bottle I had with me. It was already 10:30am and the day was promising to be a scorcher. I ducked into the covered part of the compound first to cool off a little from the drive, and was confronted by a seemingly endless array of glass tanks containing all manner of brightlycoloured fish. Straight away I recognized Nemo, albeit in his more natural form of a thumb-sized fish. They have hundreds of the little fellas here, all being bred so they can be safely released back into the waters around Krabi & Ao Nang. It was a wellknown fact that after the film became so popular, sales of the fish - called the False Clown Anemonefish - soared worldwide, which in turn saw them start to disappear from the coral reefs they inhabit as unscrupulous fishermen purged them from the ocean for profit. Nowadays, they are burgeoning again, thanks is part to the efforts of the Noppharat Thara National Park Wandering onwards, I caught sight of Lionfish, Batfish, Angelfish, Bannerfish and all the usual suspects you would see when scuba diving in this area. There were even seahorses in
28
their thousands, all swimming around huge tanks in various stages of development, which was particularly great to see as they are very difficult to spot underwater! Taking a stroll outside, I walked along the wooden jetty that extends out into the middle of the huge open-air ponds that contained the facility’s larger residents. I remembered from my last visit a few years ago that there used to be black tip reef sharks and even leopard sharks in here, which were the star attractions of the day. Today, though, most of the ponds were covered over with black netting - presumably to shade them from the harsh sun - and so there were no sharks to be seen. There were, however, plenty of enormous Groupers,
that slid beneath the surface like massive shadowy behemoths. They are used to getting fed by the employees here from the jetties, so it’s not unusual for them to come to the surface and even follow you along as you walk! Another highlight of the place is the new resident turtle that lives in a pool in the shaded section. He (or she!) was setting the kids off in tirades of squeals, laughs, pointy fingers and questions to the wide-eyed and camera-happy parents. The aquarium is and absolute must-see if you have kids with you. I was pretty much the only foreign face at the place, with the rest of the visitors made up of local Muslim families with their super-cute little kids, running around like it was Christmas morning. It was quite heart-warming to see the parents taking them around and patiently explaining to them what the different fish were and why they were here. It was getting hotter and I decide to take my leave and investigate more of Ao Nammao; but as I came to the end of the jetty, I spotted a large disk shape gliding to a stop in the
shallow water beneath me. It was a huge stingray, right below the surface! Another great find and I happily snapped away. One of the things I love about this country is the ability for anything to happen at any given moment. To demonstrate this, the man dressed in the Coca-Cola T-shirt and jeans who was in the midst of off-loading crates of his product, suddenly jumped down to the water’s edge and promptly began fondling the ray. It was apparent that he had done this before as the animal responded like a newborn pup under his touch and the two of them spent a good couple of minutes enjoying each other’s company as I captured the fairly odd scene of a Coke delivery man tickling what must pass for the chin of a huge stingray. “There’s something you don’t see every day”, I thought… I kicked my bike into life as I putted back out the way I came in, onwards to explore more of Ao Nammao, and was glad that I took the time to re-acquaint myself with this place. If you are looking for a great way to see loads of exotic fish without getting wet, or for a couple of hours of something different, then this is the place for you!

GETTING THERE Text & Pics by : Paul Stretton
Longtailing it to Railay One of the best things about travelling in Thailand is that you get to explore, poke around and discover little out-of-the-way places that you might never ordinarily find. Ao Nammao is just one of those places, and it’s right on our doorstep.
A
O NAMMAO IS ONE OF THE MAIN ‘MINITRADE ROUTES’ FROM the mainland to the Railay peninsula. If you manage to find the long pier and make it all the way to the end, you will be rewarded by a spectacular view of the coastline as well as the outlying islands of Chicken and Poda in the distance. There is a constant too-ing and froing of longtails here, loaded with all sorts of exotic items, such as sacks of washing coming from the resorts of Railay. As Railay is cut off from the rest of civilization by the limestone cliffs and jungle, everything needs to be taken there by boat. If you hang around for more than a few minutes, you are bound to see longtails loaded with crates of water, soft drinks & beer, tons of brightly coloured fruits & vegetables and gaggles of Thai workers dressed in their uniforms and lifejackets, giggling amongst themselves as their taxi-boats lurch away from the pier. Inhale deeply here and your senses will be filled with the scent of hot wood. It’s unmistakable. The hot, unbroken sun that beats down upon the dozens of longtails in this area fills the air with this wonderful aroma, and it’s a real sense of Thailand that stays with you long after you have left our shores. Pretty much anywhere you want to go, you can catch a longtail from here. Turn right at the main roundabout and about a hundred yards in front of you, you will see large signposts on the bend in the road. Follow the little side-road to the right of these large signposts to the end and there you will find the departure area with a small shaded ticketing booth. Prices are “changeable”, depending on the time of day and number of people waiting to go somewhere. It’s around 80 to get to Railay from here in a shared longtail that can take - officially - 8 people at a time. It has long been a frustrating issue with drivers trying to cram more than the “legal” number of 8 passengers into their boats at a time. Apart from the obvious safety aspects of an overloaded boat, it also means you hanging around waiting for more people to turn up before the driver decides to leave. But recent times have seen a shift in this practice - especially since the local authorities have started spot-checks on the boats at random times, with heavy fines to those that flaunt the law.
30
If you are in a hurry to get somewhere, this is not the place to be! It is very possible to wait for an hour or longer until enough people turn up to fill the boat. In the green season when it is a lot quieter, it’s anyone’s guess as to how long you can be hanging around. If you have the cash to spend, you can charter the boat so there is no waiting around. This can be a great idea if there are a few of you wanting to spend a day chugging from
one place to another, or you just fancy taking in the splendour of Railay beach at your leisure, without spending time hanging around the ticket booth. You can negotiate the price for this with the ticket operator or longtail driver directly. After 6pm, you can expect a price rise of around 20-30 THB per head, give or take. One point to note would be that if you are going to Railay for the day and plan on coming back in the evening, remember to ask when and where the last boat from - otherwise you may find yourself spending the night. Could be worse places, I suppose...
ROCK UP TO
RAILAY It doesn’t matter if you are staying on the Railay peninsula or not - everyone visiting the Krabi region should make the effort to get to this amazing place and check it out. Legendary amongst rock climbers as one of the best places for the sport in the world, you can try your hand at this even if it’s your very first time. As well as a great opportunity to take some photos to make your friends and family back home green with envy, it offers something a little different from the traditional beach vacation.
We recommend using the Hot Rock climbing school. Established in 1994, Hot Rock has long been the name for safety and professionalism in the sport. Owned and run by a Thai/Swedish couple, they are ones to look for when starting from scratch or a seasoned pro! You can see more of them on their website at www.railayadventure.com Railay has the bonus of 2 beaches, known fairly obviously as Railay East and Railay West. Although the east side is more of a mangrove area with cheaper backpacker places, the west side has the stunning beach, limestone karst, upscale resorts and of course, the sunsets. A Railay sunset is one of those things that you see in your life and never forget. Every evening, the beach fills with people and their cameras, snapping away at the sky that fills with fire. Some restaurants even provide mats and candles so you can chill out on the sand while they serve you ice-cold drinks to complete the experience in style. If you fancy yourself as the next Leonardo De Caprio à la “The Beach”, then you should look for the climb that is marked by a small wooden hut somewhere at the base of the cliff between Railay East and Phra Nang Bay. Here, you can use ropes to haul yourself up to a spectacular viewpoint to the left or a hidden lagoon to the right. Just be sure to wear sensible footwear, and avoid it if it’s been raining as it can be extremely dangerous when wet! If you are after some refreshment, take a stroll along Phra Nang Beach on the west side and you will find local vendors selling BBQ chicken, corn, peanuts, spring rolls and more right on the beach. There are even a couple of longtail boats that double up ingeniously as restaurants and can whip you up a mean pad thai in 5 minutes while you lounge around in the warm water. If you are staying in Ao Nang, there is no reason for you to miss out on the Railay experience as longtails leave from the beach frequently through out the day. The sun tends to set at around 6:15pm and is very dark by 6:45pm. It’s a good idea to try and make it back to Ao Nang by returning longtail by 7pm, as the frequency of the boats becomes less and the prices more.
31
SHELL, SHELL, SHELL! One of the most popular and unique attractions Krabi has to offer is just a few kilometers outside of Ao Nang and Krabi, and well worth a look

f you are in the vicinity of Ao Nammao, there is one place that you should really try to make it to if you get the chance, as it is one of only 3 places like it on the planet. Susan Hoi is not, as you might think, an Asian woman that sells trinkets on the beachfront. No, it is in fact the Thai name of the wellknown Krabi attraction, the Fossil Shell beach. “Susan Hoi” actually translates as “Shell Cemetery”, and with good reason. You might have seen the little buses that travel the roads of Ao Nang & Krabi advertise trips here, and they will do you a great favour in taking you there for just a few dozen Baht each way. When I arrived at the place, I was surprised. Here was I thinking there would be a little man behind a ticket booth and a solitary chicken-on-a-stick woman to keep him company, but no. There was a vast array of stalls selling all manner of trinkets, food, drinks and yes, shells. Millions and millions of shells made into all kinds of souvenirs are here, as well as pearls. Lots of pearl sales go on here with many stalls proclaiming that theirs come with official certificates to prove their worth. I wandered around a little, looking at the stalls and soon came across the ticket booth and entrance to the shell cemetery itself. The price for entry is 200 and this allows you to pass the barrier and walk down the winding stairs to the beach itself. The fossil shell beach is, as the name suggests, a beach filled with - yes - fossil shells. These date back some 40 million years, and the only other examples on Earth are in the USA and Japan. The fossils are from a kind of mollusk called a Gastropod, and there are millions of them here that makes for quite a sight. You should look for them at the edges of the broken slabs, as the ones on the top have been worn away a fair bit by years of trampling tourists, unfortunately. The little critters that became the fossils were preserved here way back when this are was a swamp, and have remained frozen in time like this ever since. After a few photos, I followed the staircase back up and was soon feeling pangs of hunger that were not in any way helped by the smell of BBQ chicken wafting across from the smiling Muslim women at their stalls. I decided to give in to temptation, but on my way I noticed something I hadn’t seen in a long time - a man selling young coconuts. For the measly sum of 20 THB, I purchased and ice-cold coconut, freshly hacked open in front on me, and set about slurping with gusto the sweet water inside. If you do decide to come and see this place, you absolutely must try one of these!
32
I eventually made it to the stalls and tucked into my lunch of chicken, rice and spicy papaya salad, all for just 80 THB. There are a few little tables and chairs scattered about under the shade of pomelo trees that offer a pretty spectacular view over the coast and to the islands in the distance. As I sat there with chicken grease dribbling down my chin, I noticed and old man sitting cross-legged under a tree, playing some kind of traditional musical instrument, with 2 tiny Thai kids watching him slack-jawed like he was from another planet.
GEOGRAPHICA
There were also a couple of horses there, courtesy of local organization, Krabi Nature Horse Riding (krabidir.com/ krabinaturehorseriding). They were offering people free rides around the trees, which had the kids squealing and laughing like it was Christmas morning.
Nammao to see and things to explore so, wiping my chin and smiling the vibrating kids as I passed by, I made my way back to my bike and strapped on my helmet. I was very glad I had taken the time to come here, to this little place away from the hecticness of Ao Nang, and see a little slice of history and culture that not a lot of people might ever see.
All-in-all, it was a very happy, peaceful scene that I could have sat and absorbed all day. As it was, I had other places in Ao
FACTS DIRECTIONS Along the coast around 18 km by road from Krabi Town, at Ban Laem Pho; or from Ao Nang beach, simply follow the road signs. The entrance to Susan Hoi is marked by a small Chinese temple. WHY GO? Cheap food, Great Views, Bit of culture - never hurt anyone, More Thai tourists than Westerners, Quieter than Ao Nang, Opportunity to buy genuine pearls, Easy to get to by bus from Ao Nang & Krabi REMEMBER! If you go at high tide, the fossils will be completely covered with water, so there will not be a lot to see! Although there is a small visitors center that has examples of the gastropods, so you get to see something. Also, there might be no admission charge if the tide is in.

uay Thai is Thailand’s National sport of Kickboxing. “Muay” means “to fight” and “Thai” translates as “Thailand”, so it is known as Thai Boxing or “Thai Fight”. There are over a 1,000 training gyms in Bangkok and there are fights almost every day somewhere in Thailand. Sawasdee Krap … Hello this is Khru “Doc” and welcome to Krabi, the pearl of Thailand. I am a Muay Thai teacher certified in Thailand and after running my own school in California, USA for 14 years, I made the move here to Thailand almost 6 years ago. I love Muay Thai and Krabi. I have learned so much here and I try to give something back to Thailand for sharing their National Sport with us foreigners. Muay Thai has made me 49 years young this year and I still love to get into the Ring. Anyone can do this sport for Fitness, Health, Weight Loss, Self-Defense and yes even fighting! Have you seen “Thai Fight” on the Thai TV stations? How about the Muay Thai Champion “Buakaw” Por.Pramuk in some Thai Commercials, TV ads, entertainment and drama shows? He is the most popular Muay Thai Champion in Thailand right now because he has won many Championship fights. He was an actor as the well known character, “Nai Kanom Thom” in the movie “Yamada The Samurai of Ayutthaya” and he just came to Krabi with his spectacular fight demo team. He did a great job acting as Nai Khanom Thom, who was a warrior in 1767 from Siam - Ayutthaya which used to be the capital of Thailand prior to Bangkok. Nai Khanom Thom is the Father of Muay Thai and he has a national holiday every year on 17th March. Nai was captured by the Burmese army and the King was so impressed at his fighting style that he set up a large fight event. According to legend, Nai Khanom Thom dazzled his first opponent with a pre-fight ritual called the “Wai Khru” and “Ram Muay”. This is a ceremonial dance honoring his King, teachers, family and nation. Then he proceeded to pummel his Burmese opponent
34
and he scored a quick KO - knockout. But the Burmese fighter was not happy about this and he claimed Nai Khanom Thom’s pre-fight ceremony distracted him or put a spell on him. And today, because of this, Thailand has a yearly competition on just this pre-fight ceremony and they have produced many amazing dances. The Burmese king then had Nai Khanom Thom fight nine more opponents, he then proved the superiority of his Thailand fighting style knocking them all out and he earned his freedom as a bonus. Today’s Thailand champ “Buakaw”, is bringing back the Spirit of Nai Khanom Thom as he has defeated many foreign champions in the New Thailand Championship promotions called “Thai Fight”. My wife and I got to go to our first event of this kind in Bangkok and it was an amazing experience. Buakaw was the main event fight, he had to fight one of France’s Champions

and Buadaw won by elbow knock out. It was a total “Thailand” experience, full of national pride, fun games, company promotions and great competition. As we set in the audience, we felt the history of Nai Khonom Thom as it was displayed by Buskaw in his pre-fight ceremony, and then in the fight that followed. The whole stadium was electrified with energy and I was very excited because it will be a great place for us foreigners to really fight the best of the best in Thailand. If anyone wins in a “Thai Fight” then they have truly embraced the ethos of Muay Thai. I am excited to see which Country will truly come up to the challenge to fight Thailand’s best in the future “Thai Fight” events … who will be the first to win and beat Thailand at it’s best, I wonder? When Buakaw scheduled an appearance right here in Krabi, my wife, daughter and I were excited to meet the Champ face to face. He did a Nai Kanom Thom fighting demonstration with his two students and it was the main event show. Then Buakaw
let many of us meet him, take pictures and greet him. He is a high class Champ, he was surprised my wife and daughter could speak Thai and he was really glad to meet us. Thailand has a great Champion in this young man, so if you see the name, “Buakaw”, you should do your best to go see him fight. He was born on 8 May 1982 and started to fight at the age of 8 years old in his home Province of Surin, in the North East of Thailand. Then he moved to Por.Pramuk gym just outside of Bangkok at the age of 10 and his first fight name was Damtanin Kiat-Anan. Today he is an amazing champion and Thailand is fully behind him. Muay Thai, Thailand’s championship ring fighting sport is my “Fountain of Youth”. Many all over the world are doing it from ages 6 to 60 years and more. Anyone can enjoy this amazing sport and we all are encouraged by Champs like Buakaw … You can do it too!
Phra JAO uay phra pon krap … God bless you from Krabi, Khru “Doc”.

CULTURAL
Birds of a Feather If you have been a visitor in Krabi for a few days and explored more than the beachfront, there is a good chance that you may have come across a rather odd sight. Now and again, there are gatherings of enthusiasts that to some might seem a little strange - rugged Thai men fawning over little colourful birds in pretty cages. I’d safely eat my proverbial hat if you haven’t at least caught sight of a guy puttering along on his moped with a covered bird cage in one hand, held aloft like a precious treasure.
So, what’s that all about then? Well, it’s all about the voice. These birds are all-star singers that have been trained by their owners to sing sweeter, longer and more melodically than their rivals, all to win fame and fortune. You might be surprised to learn that a lot - and I mean, a lot of money is spent on these competitions. For example, a baby bird can set it’s owner back around 500 THB to begin with. A more mature warbler that has started to sing fetches 1,500 THB. But get this - a competition winning champ can go for and eyewatering 1200,00 THB! Yes, for a little bird. So how is one singing bird judged over the others, I hear you ask? Well, if you were to follow one of those manly men carrying his precious charge, he will most likely lead you to a field where anything from a dozen to several hundred similar cages are hanging on metal poles. There are usually three judges who will attend every bird for 30 seconds or so, and this
36
is the time for each bird to shine. In just half a minute, it will be judged on it’s ability to sing constantly, as well as the melody and general overall “sweetness” of it’s voice - all the while being encouraged by it’s owner, who shouts it’s name from the sidelines in encouragement. It’s worth noting that these are very particular kinds of birds, called the Red Whiskered Bulbul, and known locally as “Princess birds”. They are actually a protected species here in Thailand and are no longer allowed to be taken from the wild. Unfortunately, this doesn’t necessarily mean that it doesn’t happen, and with thousands of Baht on offer in competition prizes, there is a lot of demand for quality singers. In an attempt to try and curb this “poaching”, the government now insists that every bird entered into a competition comes with it’s official registration documents, which is a step in the right direction at least. Fines can be severe for those that flaunt the law - as is generally the case in Thailand! Offenders can be faced with 4 years in prison, up to 40,000 THB in fines or even both. While this may seem like a harsh deterrent, the laws are not regularly enforced and illegal entrants still flourish in competitions.
In 2003, and amnesty was introduced in an attempt to mark a cutoff point in the illegal capture of birds from the wild, which saw over a million birds declared. No-one knows how many were not declared, though. The competition itself is a real glimpse into Thai culture that not a lot of Westerners get to see, and it’s a shame. The entrants and judges are generally very happy to see foreign faces at their events, and it’s a fantastic photo opportunity that you should not miss, so don’t forget your camera! They can be a little difficult to pin down in terms of times and locations, but there is usually always one in Ao Nammao every Thursday at the main roundabout. You can’t miss it - just listen for the sound of cheering men and chirping birds!

PLANTING TREES AND REMOVING RUBBISH
FOR A BETTER ENVIRONMENT
I
t is said that deforestation is responsible for about 17% of all the global carbon emissions today. That’s more carbon dioxide than every car, boat, plane, truck and train combined. We are therefore very glad to be working in collaboration with the Association for Protection of the Environment (APE) in their reforestation projects within the Krabi area. During the month of March we all have been really busy preparing for the upcoming planting season. Large areas of previously healthy tropical forests have in the past been cleared to make way for rubber and palm oil plantations. Now, some of these deforested areas have been taken out of use and are being prepared to be turned into natural tropical forest again. This means giving a chance for native wild animals, like gibbons and different bird species, to return to what once was their home. To be able to replant a forest you need tree saplings, and that’s what we’ve been taking care of in the FORRU (Forest Restoration Research Unit) tree nursery in the village of Klong Thom. The pots need to be weeded and the saplings need water and fertilizers to be able to grow into strong healthy trees. During this month we have even extended the tree nursery into two new locations, as there is so much land to be reforested within the next years. The students at the local school of Klong Thom were very excited to see their very own tree nursery being built, and they will now proudly take care of the trees, which are the beginning of a living future for the native tropical forest in Krabi. Even the Dawn of Happiness Resort, our home in Ao Nam Mao, received a new tree nursery in March. Volunteers were digging, cutting and building it from scratch. Planting the seeds though is not a matter of just put them in a pot with some soil. Some of the seeds had to be soaked in hot water, some cut open and some of them we even had to set on fire before planting!
38
The tree saplings will now need love, care and water every day until they are about half a meter tall - only then are they strong enough to survive in the field. We are now waiting excitedly for the ultimate planting time to approach - the wet season starting in May - to see our trees growing up and helping to stop the global carbon emissions. During the month of March the team of Projects Abroad conservation volunteers have been conducting Reef Check surveys and also monitoring the debris situation on the reefs. A total of 59 kg of rubbish have been removed. Each item has been recorded and data submitted to the Project Aware international database for marine debris. Removing the rubbish from the reefs is something very important as it poses a great threat to the marine life. During our monthly visit to the Turtle Rescue Centre in Phuket on the 23rd of March, we saw the devastating effects we are causing the marine life by leaving rubbish in the sea. At the centre, many injured sea turtles have been handed in after being hit by boat propellers, caught in fishing nets or lost fishing lines or having accidentally eaten plastic bags. This day we took care of sea turtles with amputated fins, cracked shells and diving impairment caused by entanglement in fishing lines. The turtle’s pools needed to be scrubbed, as well as the shells of the turtles themselves. Some turtles also had to have their wounds cleaned, which we all helped out with. After seeing all the harm the rubbish cause the environment, we decided this month to start an anti-rubbish campaign around our local beaches. Volunteers designed and printed posters encouraging visitors to the beaches to bring their rubbish and cigarette butts with them home. Did you know for example, it is estimated that around 1 million seabirds are killed each year due to ingestion of plastics? By presenting these posters we inform and create awareness within people, and hopefully we are one step closer to a healthier and safer environment for every living creature on this planet.

Hoi Chak Teen The King of Krabi is here! Prepare yourself to meet Royalty, as we introduce to you the “King of Krabi”, and he’s appearing at a beach near you right now... Now that I have your attention, you may have to forgive me a little for misleading you a teeny-weeny bit as, while the “King of Krabi” is indeed on these shores - it might not be quite what you are thinking…. If you go down to the beach today, you might indeed be in for a surprise if you are observant enough. Yes, the sights on the horizon are spectacular enough to have you walking into trees and falling down manholes, but there are plenty of interesting things in the most surprising of places - especially if you turn your gaze towards your feet.. The so-called “King of Krabi” could be right there, as the “King” is of the shellfish, rather than the people. I am referring to the local delicacy, known in sensible circles as a member of the “Strombus Canxarium” family of conches. Personally, I prefer the “King of Krabi”, as it’s moniker suggests it is a superior morsel of the sea. If you are partial to a little seafood, then you are in for a real treat, as this little fella is as delicious as it’s readily available. Known locally in Thai as “Hoi Chak Teen, this translates as the “Foot pulling shell”,as it has little brown “legs” poking out underneath it’s shell that help to move it along in the shallow waters it inhabits. As well as being used for food, the shells themselves serve an important purpose as they can be sold as souvenirs. You will most likely see the highly polished shells of the Hoi Chak Teen on sale at many of the little stalls that are always around the beach.
So how on Earth do you prepare and eat these little beauties? Well as you might imagine, there are chillies and garlic involved in the process - no real surprise there. The shell and it’s inhabitant are first soaked for around 30 minutes in salty water with a few chillies thrown in for flavour. During this time, the little beastie inside starts to open up and push his “foot” out of the shell, expelling any dirt and sand in the process. After they have all put their best foot forward, they are rinsed well under clean, running water before being placed in a large pot of cool water. The pot is put on to boil, and as it starts to warm up, the foot again gets pushed out and this time stays there until it is completely cooked. So, now for the fun part! How does one set about devouring said morsel? Well, you take a toothpick and stick it into the shell to scoop out the goodies inside. Then you can dip it into a home-made concoction of the ubiquitous garlic, chillies, limes, fish sauce and a little palm sugar. Yum! So keep your eyes peeled for these little wonders of our shores, and even if you wouldn’t normally go for such things, perhaps take a leap and gulp one down to see if the “King of Krabi” is all it’s cracked up to be.

KOH JUM KOH JUM, ALSO KNOWN AS KOH PU, named after the 420 meter high mountain in the island’s rugged north is situated halfway between Krabi and Koh Lanta Yai, 25 km from Krabi Town. A large Muslim populated sub-district of Krabi, Koh Jum is home to 1,500 inhabitants in three tiny fishing villages. The population engages mostly in fishing, rubber cultivation and the local craft of cloth weaving. While the north is mountainous, the south comprises dense jungle, cashew nut trees, rubber plantations, casuarinas and nipa-palms. The string of beaches on the west coast has several simple, wooden bungalow resorts and one resort community of private beach homes,

Nature is at your feet there, and if it’s serenity you’re after, you can’t go wrong. Electricity just arrived in Koh Jum a couple of years ago; some smaller resorts are still powered by generator. GETTING THERE There is a ferry terminal about 35 - 40km south of Krabi town, in a place called Laem Kruat, that can take you to the islands, the last one departs at around 3pm. It costs around 50 Baht per person. Another option is to take a ferry directly from Krabi or Koh Lanta. This might be an easier and more reliable option for most people. A new ferry service has started from/to Koh Phi Phi Islands. A short stop into your nearest travel agent will furnish you with the latest times and tickets for your journey. Contact the resort you wish to stay at for assistance with transportation.

K
OH LANTA IS SITUATED IN THE SOUTHERNMOST TIP OF THE KRABI PROVINCE. It consists of two islands, Koh Lanta Noi and Koh Lanta Yai. Koh Lanta Noi is the smaller of the two islands and does not have tourist facilities. Visitors traveling by road from the main land pass through the smaller island on the way to Koh Lanta Yai, the center of the tourist operations. Ban Sala Dan village, in the north of the island, is Lanta Yai’s commercial center, and the pier where visitors arrive on the island. It is a row of shops, seafood restaurants on stilts, dive shops, tour operators, banks and guest houses that cater for new comers on the island. The bulk of the Lanta beaches lie along the west coast of the island and can all be reached by road: Khao Kwang, Khlong Dao and Phra Ae all have long stretches of white sand facing the Andaman sea, while Khlong Khong, Khlong Nin and Ba Kan Tiang and other smaller bays are all nice to relax and swim. The east coast of Koh Lanta Yay is flat and has many local villages scattered along its coastline. Koh Lanta has a very diverse cultural mix of people who have lived on the island in harmony for hundreds of years: Thai-Muslim, Thai-Chinese and the original sea gypsies still inhabit the place in harmony. The biggest town on the island is Lanta Old town. Boat trips to Koh Lanta are available during the monsoon free period from October to April. May to November see the closure of some of the island businesses and of the boat passenger services due to rough seas. A minibus service is the alternative way to reach the island via land.
ECOTOURS These are run all year round from the east coast of Lanta Yai, not affected by the low season rough seas. Make your way to Thung Yee Pheng village for a trip with a local community, or book a tour with friendly and experienced local companies. NATURE Because of its bio-diversity and richness of natural resources, Lanta is a good place for trekking. Explore limestone cave chambers and passageways in the Lanta caves, or walk upstream to the spring water waterfall, where to swim in cool rock pools. FIRE DANCING This is definitely one interesting part of the Lanta beach culture. A fire dancing show is usually performed by young boys performing twisting acrobatics swinging burning torches and ropes lit on fire around their muscular bodies. A distinguishing show that sparkles in the dark.
LANTA OLD TOWN It was once called Ban Si Raya and was the commercial port for Chinese and Arabic trading boats that sailed between the ports of Phuket, Penang and Singapore. Today it is a village with a few rows of stilted shop houses home to an ancient community that was established on the island long ago. It is a picturesque place with, these Chinese timer shop-houses date back 100 years, from the old days of sea trading. Near the shacks along the coast, local fishermen dock their longtail boats giving the whole scene a very Thai look. BA KANTIANG BEACH Spectacular crystal–clear seawater and soft white sand, romantic sunsets in utmost privacy, this is why Ba Kantiang has come to symbolize a hideaway in Lanta for relaxing in natural surroundings. LIGHTHOUSE ON LANTA Located in Tanod Cape, on the southernmost tip of the island, the lighthouse tower of Lanta is the perfect symbol of solitude. It is the place where immaculate nature still survives as it is rarely reached by tourists due to the rugged road conditions. KOH LANTA NATIONAL PARK The park covers a marine area dotted with several small sandy islands surrounded by coral reefs. The headquarters is located on the island’s southern extremity. BAN SANKAU A sea gypsy’s settlement in south-east Lanta Yai. It is there that an old clan of traditional Chao Ley try to preserve a disappearing way of life in this fast-developing island.

Highlights 51
ACTIVITY
Peaceful and sea-plenty
KohLanta With the 2 main pulls of this idyllic island being scubadiving and simply relaxing, you can see why Koh Lanta is one of the best places to rejuvenate your mind and body. If you decide to make the trip to Koh Lanta, you will be rewarded with plenty of sight-seeing activities, some of which are rather ‘unique’, to say the least. One of these is ‘Tham Marakot’, which translates as ‘The Emerald Cave’. In order to reach it, you must put on a life jacket and swim through a dark tunnel into the belly of a mountain until you discover the hidden paradise that lies within. The beginning of this trip is only 30 mins away from Koh Muk, another ‘must-see’ area of the islands. Here, you can snorkel and scuba dive in some of the most stunning coral reefs in the world. If you love the ocean, then you are in the right place! Koh Lanta has some of the best dive sites in Thailand and as an added bonus, they are a lot quieter than the hectic sites at the islands of Phi Phi. Hin Bida and the breathtaking underwater scenery of the Koh Haa archipelago offer loads of marine life, including some of the larger specimens such as leopard sharks and barracuda, as well as the whale shark at the right time of the year! The soft nature of the limestone the islands are carved from has created a myriad of caves to explore on Koh Lanta, as well as lush mangrove forests that can be a joy to paddle down in a kayak. The North of the island is the best place for this, and there are plenty of locations where you can hire one with a guide to make sure that you get the most from your trip and don’t get lost! You can most likely ask at the place you are staying and they can arrange this for you. At the end of your day, you could do a lot worse than to try a traditional seafood meal cooked the Thai way with plenty of heat. Check out the local restaurants in the Saladan area or Lanta Old Town for the ultimate in Thai hospitality - old school style.

ROAD TRIP
make your way to… KOH LANTA Klong Thom is less than 50 km south of Krabi Town, and it is home to the Emerald Pond – ‘Sa Market’ – and the hot springs – ‘Nam Tok Ron’. From the Klong Thom district, I took route 4038 to Lam Thap sub-district, and then turned right onto Rural Highway 4021. These two extremely popular local attractions are located along the way and are clearly sign-posted, at about seven kilometres or so down the 4021. Take advantage for a stopover for a break and take in these natural wonders.
Driving to any destination away from the tourist areas where you are based might feel a hard bet for a newcomer not used to Thai pot-holed roads and ‘questionable’ drivers. But if it’s adventure you’re after, then you should consider a road trip to an exciting destination: Koh Lanta. Your trip can be full of surprises and interesting stopovers. Just for fun, I decided to forego the usual methods of transport to get to Koh Lanta Island - boat and car - and use my motorbike. It was a beautiful day when I set out from Ao Nang and started my journey South. The sky was blue with the odd fluffy cloud lumbering by. I left relatively early in the morning, so on some sections I had the road almost exclusively to myself. I cruised along well-maintained roads enveloped by extraordinary scenery - a real marvel of nature. The trip took me through some local areas and markets where I could stop and relax and get a bite to eat from a local stall, all at my own leisure. The route is signposted pretty well from main towns on the National Highway 4, like Nuea Klong and Klong Thom.
After my short break, I hit the road once again and headed back to Klong Thom, direction south. I passed the museum and the hospital before turning right along the 4206 route to Hua Hin pier. Lush marine pines and mangrove forests line the coast at Hua Hin pier, from where the mountains of Koh Lanta Noi are clearly visible across the water. The 40 km long road from route 4 to the pier where the ferry departs to the Lanta islands is also sided by coconut trees, palm oil plantations and row upon row of rubber-trees. I paid my small fare and shared the rusted ferry with pick-up cars full of merchandise bought by Muslim families in the mainland, as well as boys and girls on bikes and trucks loaded with building materials. On Koh Lanta Noi there is still not a lot going on, except for local people going about their business - one of the reasons I enjoy going there! The 7km road to the second pier is straight and sided by rice fields, marshes, pine trees and casuarinas. It is also quite trafficked with lorries and tourist buses transferring visitors to Lanta Yai. The second ferry transfer was short, taking just 10 minutes, and I was glad to get to my destination safe and with loads of pictures on my camera. I was ready to relax!
FACTS The journey to the first ferry is only around 90 minutes by bike and 60 minutes by car, and easy to accomplish. The ferry rides can be very short or very long, depending on the queue. Also, there is no shelter from the sweltering sun while you are waiting apart form small food stalls, so be warned! Drive to Krabi from Bangkok 1st Option: Use Highway No.4 passing Petchburi – Prachuab Khirikhan – Chumphon – Ranong – Phang-nga – Krabi for a total of 946 kilometres. 2nd Option: Use Highway No. 4 as far as Chumphon, then take Highway No. 41 past Langsuan and Chaiya District, Suratthani to Viangsa District, then take Highway No. 4035 to Ao Luek District to get on to Highway No. 4 again, then to Krabi, for a total 814 kilometres. Drive to Krabi from Phuket Use Highway No. 402 and No. 4 for a total of 185 kilometers, or approximately 3 hours.

HEALTH & LIVING
Annelie Block’s
Soul Things
The floods that ravaged parts of Thailand at the end of last year had a profound effect on the tourism industry and economy of the country. Less visitors meant a lot more time on our hands, so some local residents got to thinking…. Owner and proprietor of The Lanta Retreat, Annelie Block has come up with a new idea, called “Annelie Block’s Soul Things”. As the name suggests, it does indeed cater for pretty much everything that your soul needs. It includes her new book, entitled “Soul Food” that carefully examines the art of living and shall be available in her store very shortly. Her brand-new online store now also stocks all sorts of beautiful items designed right here in Thailand and all related to meditation, yoga and mindfulness - many of which are Fair Trade and produced in and environmentally friendly way. The online store is now also the place you can purchase Annelie’s ever-popular yoga DVD and CD. Annelie will be taking her show on the road as she travels to other countries, bringing her yoga retreats to those who can’t make the long trip to Thailand to see her. She will be working in conjunction with other yoga masters in these countries, and more information will be available on her website www.soul-things.com, as well as the Facebook page for The Retreat.
This summer, one of her trips will take her to Sweden, where she will be running a retreat together with Pernilla Thell who runs Spa & Co. (info@spaoco.se) in Trelleborg. Designed for new recruits and experienced yoga-practitioners alike, the retreat will run from 20 - 24th July 2012 and they will be posting news, updates and more on www.theretreat.se, Spa & Co.’s website and their own website at Soul Things. At the end of July they had planned to hold retreats in Greece, but unfortunately that didn’t pan out as they had hoped. Who can blame them really, as the Grecians are going through such a tough time at the moment! So instead, they will be running a silent retreat in beautiful Koh Lanta during 19 - 28 September. More info will be available soon on their Facebook page and www.theretreat.se These intense meditation retreats have become such a success, Annelie will be running them next season on the first Monday of every month. This season, their boutique is filled with new items for all your yoga & meditational needs. A delight for all the senses that is well worth a second look.
The shop is open Monday – Friday 8.30am – 4:00pm all season and most Saturdays 9am - 12 Noon.

ARCHITECT TIPS
KRABI
– A PROPERTY INVESTORS DREAM! IF YOU ARE SEARCHING FOR SOMEWHERE SOLID TO INVEST YOUR PRECIOUS SAVINGS, somewhere that offers both exceptional value for money and the possibility of significant financial return, w purchasing land or property in Krabi could be the answer. The property market is particularly buoyant in Thailand and investors are optimistic that this trend will continue throughout 2012 and for the foreseeable future. Around one third of the Thai population is between twentyfour and forty-four years of age, an optimal demographic for stimulating the housing market. This is a market that has remained, until only recently, relatively untapped by foreign investors. This looks set to change however, and nowhere more so than in Krabi, south west Thailand. This popular holiday resort with an enviable climate and breathtaking scenery is enjoying an unprecedented economic boom all of its own. Visitors are descending on its vibrant tourist resorts in unparalleled numbers, resulting in record breaking occupancy rates for 2011 and the first two months of 2012. This means that the demand for both holiday and residential accommodation in Krabi is extremely high and that property prices and rental yields are likely to rise accordingly. Krabi is consequently being allowed to develop at a relentless pace, albeit in a manner sympathetic to an area of outstanding natural beauty. Krabi architects and builders are rising to the challenge by providing a world-class selection of real estate that showcase the very best in modern construction and contemporary Thai design. Krabi buildings often display an innovative use of environmentally friendly materials that also promote a low carbon footprint.
59
The stunning results, boasting superior specifications, are considered extremely desirable - even to property investors with high expectations. Local infrastructure improvements, such as increased flight connections at Krabi International Airport and the expansion of nearby Phuket International Airport, are also making Krabi a more attractive holiday destination and subsequently, a tempting investment opportunity. Foreign investors - many from China, Russia and the Middle East - are quickly realising that Krabi is not only an ideal place to invest their hard-earned cash, but also a sophisticated resort that makes a great place to call home. They are eagerly snapping up stylish Krabi villas with the intention of renting them out on the lucrative holiday market until they are able to cash in their pension. And they do this, safe in the knowledge that their nest egg will almost certainly increase in value and earn them a tidy sum. Ton Company Ltd, a Krabi-based operation is an independent Architecture, Developer and General Building Contractor company who manage and offer ‘Full Turn-Key Services’ for all sizes of project from conception through completion of construction and final handover. Every design project is collaboration between architect and client, though every firm is different in how they handle this relationship. Here at Ton Company, we see clients as contributing members of the design team. Their needs are foremost throughout the process, which is an open dialogue of creation, analysis and modification. Even construction projects in Krabi are now carried out in-house, creating continuity and the shared vision our clients expect and deserve for their project.

Lamps with low level of consumption light sources like LED or fluorescent, powered by eco-friendly devices like dimmers and sensors that detect the natural light in the ambient therefore allowing to modulate the light intensity of the source. Light devices with an eco friendly soul. NEW GENERATION LAMPS The uncontested protagonist is the LED, a small lightemitting diode with high performances. Several designers have embraced the potential of this technology which is closer to electronic than electric. LED are new light sources with a long life (40,000 hours against the 1,500 of the obsolete bulb), able to save energy and with an elevated ratio emitted lumen/consumed watts (80-100
lumen/watt against the 15-25 of the traditional bulb). They have a small pointed shape, and this allows a reduction of their encumbrance, which results in new freedom of composition with lines, surfaces and geometrics complex shapes becoming light producers themselves. LED supporters are many, including Parisian designer Marc Sadler who cooperates with Italian brands like Foscarini and Fabbian. Those critical underline that the LED is a small contribution to the environment if it costs more to produce them, and argue that it is often the production process to be non eco-friendly, not the final product. LIGHT ON DEMAND Dimmers are sensors that dose the power according to the level of natural light present in the ambient, and they are able to give out light where and when needed. Dimmers placed at the base of lighted bodies are literally light tubs. Sensors, on the other hands, are devices that record the

intensity of natural light and calibrate the artificial intensity of the light source. A clear example is Kelvin Led, a desk lamp by Antonio Citterio with Toan Nguyen for Flos: it has a sensor at its top that can be touched slightly to modulate the light intensity of the LED, with the optical switch changing colour, from orange to green, activating the green function.
with architecture until disappearing into it; the second heads to the opposite direction, looking to achieve decorativeness in the object so that it becomes a pleasure to look at it. There is a need to create objects that distance from fashion, both in quality and beauty terms, so to eliminate the factors that accelerate the object obsoleteness, satisfying the market needs through different object interpretations.
BYE BYE OLD ABAT-JOUR Lamps are becoming more and more lighted bodies, precious furnishing complements that provide extraordinary scenic effects. Today the trend is to go for an expressive light body that optimizes the light flux, revolutionizing the old way of designing a lamp from the obsolete idea of a single point radiating the light, to a multi point and surface from where light is spread. Clear example of this is Alcatraz by Artemide, a floor lamp with a light diffuser that resembles a drop of crystallized light.
ALL IN A PROJECT The starting point should be: where is the lamp going to be placed? By giving it a context, we understand its use and functionality, easily deciding its light source and what effect and function it needs to have. Light sources have to be considered not individually but as part of a project. The professional light designer is an important player in an historical moment when the light bulb is being replaced by new technologies. LED have radically modified the way of lighting spaces, from a generic lighting at 360 degrees with great waste of light and watt, to localized and calibrated lighting according to the use needed.

PROPERTY REPORT
Capital Appreciation I have heard it before here in Krabi: “Wow, you just don’t find this in places like Koh Samui or Phuket!” But would you invest here?
S
o you love the area and realize there is just no other beauty in all of Thailand quite like Krabi and her surrounding islands. After explaining the origins of these unbelievable limestone Karsts and how, geologically, they originate all the way from the Guilin area in China down through Vietnam before ending up here in Krabi, my wowed guests then understand just how special this all is. Investing in Krabi? Yes, you do get all this amazing geology along with your investment, but is this the right time to “dive in”, so to speak?
Shopping malls in Krabi Town of over 50 businesses catering to travelers’ needs, including restaurants and coffee shops that will provide a more welcoming addition for tourists coming to Krabi town from Ao Nang.
Krabi is currently the right investment decision for the following obvious reasons:
A private Primary School has now located in Ao Nang right at the turn-off to Klong Muang Beach. A brand-new International hospital is also in it’s final stages of construction just outside of Krabi.
There are now 5 Five-Star resorts in operation in Klong Muang - Tup Keak Beach. These include the Amari Vogue, Ritz Carlton, Sheraton and Sofitel – the latter of which boasts the largest infinity swimming pool in Thailand. The Klong Muang - Tup Keak Beach area is just a short speedboat ride from some of the most beautiful islands in the are, including the Koh Hong archipelago. Luxury speedboats are locally available. Sofitel has a 9-hole golf course adjacent to its hotel. There will be more golf course construction announcements for Krabi coming soon as golf courses inevitably follow 5 Star Resort developments. Already, we are starting to see some evidence of groundbreaking activity. A Marina has been completed and a Marina Hotel is in the planning stages in Krabi town.

Krabi is poised to be the next stage in a planned “Riviera” coastline over 90 miles in length. The Thai Tourism Development Council foresees, over the coming years, Phuket to Krabi Bay developed into the equal of the “French Riviera. “ An ideal destination for the “snow birds” of northern Asia. Long-term development plans will seek to capture a new affluent Chinese market, seen as the next big movement of buyers into Southern Thailand.
Phulay Bay, A Ritz Carlton Reserve in the Klong Muang - Tup Keak area is now the first property in the world to bear the Reserve brand. The Ritz-Carlton Hotel group aims to manage at least 10 properties in Thailand within five years. It is worth noting that this US hotel chain’s Reserve brand is launching globally with the first boutique hotel right here in Krabi.
Investment property prices of comparable Krabi construction quality and finishing that are now on offer in Phuket are seen still rising. We are looking at 8 to 10 more years of solid quality growth compared to where Phuket is right now. If you missed Phuket, you don’t want to miss the opportunity that is being first in Krabi. The Krabi Land Office and Planning Department
The time is now for Krabi. In the last 5 years, we have seen a lot of positive high-end development, in particular the Klong Muang - Tup Keak Beach area, and the inevitable march toward higherend developments in Krabi, Ao Nang and Koh Lanta. Amidst this natural beauty, Krabi is a prime investment opportunity for the astute early Investor. Krabi presents an all-in formula for high yield. Don’t miss it if you can.

Why property maintenance should not be an afterthought, but at the top of your list of priorities when designing your new villa.
that uses high grade silicone to provide a seamless waterproof barrier, without the potential for areas of weakness and cracks in joints like the more commonly used cement sealant.
Property is one of the largest financial investments most people will make in their lifetime; and when that property is a retirement or permanent holiday home, it can be one of the largest emotional investments as well. Strange then, that new Krabi homeowners rarely pause to think about the care and maintenance of their dream villa – either before or after its construction.
With precautionary measures like these incorporated into your house plan, and a good property management service after construction, you can rest easy when away from Krabi, knowing your valuable investment is protected.
Of course they may not realise that, in this tropical climate, properties can deteriorate rapidly, particularly if not occupied all year round. Unoccupied homes are much more susceptible to attack from termites and other unwanted guests. Ants, lizards and other creatures are quick to move in when the owners are not around and these coupled with fluctuations in humidity that make wood warp, can cause cracks and even structural damage to a home in a matter of months. The monsoon season can also be a nightmare for home owners. Severe storms can flood ground floors, damage roofs and spring new leaks that means major repair work both inside and outside the building, while persistent rains can transform manicured gardens into unmanageable jungles within a few short weeks – guaranteed to attract thieves and vandals. If you are planning to own a home here, you should try to anticipate such common problems during the planning and construction process of any building, knowing that most clients are not able to live in their finished homes throughout the whole year. Basic design features such as foundations laid on slab - which raise a building off the ground - help protect homes from flash flooding and termite invasion. These can both be very serious problems if left unchecked. Construction materials are specially selected for their durability in hot, humid climates, and their low maintenance requirements. For example, all wood (both decorative and functional) is replaced by Conwood, a stronger, high quality fibre-cement board that offers exactly the same appearance without the huge disadvantages of the natural product. Window frames are always aluminium, which again is durable and provides a better barrier against insects. Roofing is another matter that needs to be looked at in-depth. OSPITAL for Krabi
ONE OF THE MOST ANTICIPATED ARRIVALS TO THE KRABI region is about to be unveiled in the shape of a brand new International hospital. Rumours have abounding for months now as to “if” and “when” the state-of-the-art medical center is to be completed, and it looks as if the end is indeed in sight. A real boon for holiday-makers and ex-pat residents alike, the new Krabi Nakharin International Hospital will make life for Krabi residents a lot easier when a hospital visit is required. At present, they generally need to make the 2+ hour drive to the nearby island of Phuket, to attend the 2 International hospitals located there. This has sufficed until now but not ideal if there is an emergency, as I’m sure you’ll agree! Although the hospital is still under construction, we have been told that there will be beds for a “large number of patients”, as well as a parking area for up to 100 cars. Located at the Pisalpop Road at T.Paknum in Krabi, it is set to become a prominent landmark in the region. For some time now, the Krabi region has been undergoing a real growth spurt that has seen more and more investors come to the area. More resorts and villas are springing up all the time, as the overall “quality” of the establishments starts to
creep up from the 2-star backpacker-style places to 4 and 5-star luxury resorts. The recent addition of a brand new marina is also putting the stamp on Krabi as one of the places to be in Thailand now. So the new Nakharin International Hospital is a fitting addition to the area that will only serve to pull even more ex-pats and potential visitors from overseas, as the prospect of close-athand medical care in an unpredictable country such as Thailand is a huge carrot to dangle. Apart from the ex-pats, the local community here in Krabi will benefit from the new hospital in the way of vastly improve care, resources, new equipment and the creation of new jobs. As if this weren’t alluring enough, there is also a new medical facility opening at the Port Takola Marina, situated around 10km away from the busy beach town of Ao Nang. This clinic will be operated by the renowned Bangkok Hospital group, who run the very successful hospitals in both Bangkok and Phuket and have an excellent track record in providing top-notch medical care. So with two brand new medical facilities imminent, Krabi is set to become and even more attractive area for tourist and ex-pats alike.
