Ao Nang, at 20km from Krabi Town, is the most developed of Krabi’s beaches, a long stretch of white sandy beach with limestone mountains as a backdrop. It has a wide range of accommodation and services and the main shopping street features restaurants, bars, pubs, souvenir shops, dive centers and tour agencies, massage centers and spas. This is the hub from which to plan your trip at sea and to the nearby islands on a typical longtail boat. Noppharat Thara beach, just around the corner from Ao Nang, is 3km long yet still undeveloped, with only a few resorts and bars. Attractive because of its natural setting, this is where local youngsters and families gather at sunset and at weekends. Savour some local Muslim snacks at the beach stalls, or fill yourself with seafood in the local restaurants at the very end of the beach, near the Noppharat Thara National Park headquarters. At low tide, walk out together with millions of small crabs on the sandy pathways to the small islands near the beach. Railay beaches are split and separated from Krabi and Ao Nang by monumental limestone mountains. Railay has two sides, east and west, and its settings are simply marvelous: crystal clear waters, pure sandy beaches, lush mountains, rocky islands
emerging from the sea. Railay can only be reached by boat, a 15 minutes ride from Ao Nang or 30 minutes from Krabi Town. Enjoy a cocktail in one of the beach bars, visit the Phranang Cave, challenge yourself on a rock climbing course, hike the limestone massif to a lagoon and a viewpoint, or simply chill out. Neighbouring Tonsai lies at the base of a cliff that divides it form Railay West. Tonsai has a shallow beach with slow gradients out to sea which is profoundly affected by the tide. Klong Muang beach is a further 20km away from Ao Nang; it is the up-market side of Krabi, the place to be if you are after a peaceful holiday. Catering to families and couples, it is here that you really get the so deserved repose, surrounded by pristine nature. Tubkaek beach is another real place to hide away; long, clean and peaceful, the area has breathtaking views over Koh Hong islands archipelago, and charming sunsets. From there you can venture inside the National Park and try a walking trail to a viewpoint and a waterfall. Koh Lanta beaches have a wide selection of resorts for all tastes and pockets. Lanta Yai island has long stretches of gleaming white sandy beaches and shallow emerald waters. Lined with tropical vegetation, a private spot is never more than a short walk away on a southern beach at Lanta Yai.
NATURAL HOTSPOTS
Limestone mountains or karsts characterize most of the inland Krabi area, the most spectacular being the massifs of Sai Tai. Susaan Hoi is a 40 million year-old seashell cemetery; once a large swamp where freshwater crustaceans proliferated, today home to 40 centimeter thick, shell encrusted limestone slabs, a geological uniqueness not far from Ao Nang. One must find a broken edge to see the shells clearly, since all of those on the upper surface have been walked on and worn down by the elements and are hard to identify. Khao Phanom Bencha National Park, at 20km from Krabi Town, comprises waterfalls, streams, lush forests and caves. It is home to all kind of flora and wildlife and to the highest mountain in the region from which it takes the name. One of the features of the park is Huay Toh Waterfall where water runs down onto several huge pools. Tarnbok Khoranee National Park, in the north of the region, consists of limestone mountains, verdant tropical forest, caves and beautiful islands. It is well known for its different species of trees growing around a large natural crystal clear pool, and for the hundreds of birds’ species. Phi Hua Toh Cave, in the nearby Bor Thor area, surrounded by mangrove swamps and reachable by boat or kayak, is where to see pre-historic rock paintings depicting animals and humans. Sa Morakot, the Emerald Pool, is a natural wonder: a pond of turquoise water with an average temperature of 30-40C, fed by a hot spring in the middle of the jungle.
Hot Springs of Klong Thom, natural Jacuzzis in which to lift away tensions and relieve body and mind with the mineral enriched waters falling into rocky ponds.
THE ISLANDS
Hop on or hire a longtail, the local wooden boats with their picturesque prows. Sail away to Koh Poda, surrounded by turquoise waters, or to Koh Kai, shaped as a chicken and therefore called the Chicken Island, from where a walk on a sandy pathway connects it to Koh Tub. Make a longtail boat or speedboat trip to the Koh Hong archipelago, a group of limestone islands with hidden caves and lagoons perfect for kayaking or snorkeling. Join an organized tour to amazing Koh Phi Phi islands, full of marvelous bays, limestone cliffs, waters rich in marine life, caves where swallow nests are harvested, and much more. Visit Koh Jum and Koh Siboya, small, unspoiled tropical hideaway that have a unique atmosphere. These islands give visitors the time to relax and re-charge their batteries. Or venture out on Koh Lanta, the developing island at the southern end of the province home to sea gypsies communities, where you will meet nature and tradition. A National Park area that comprises many different islands surrounded by coral reefs, such as Koh Ngai and remote Koh Rok.
THE CULTURE
Ban Natin, on the way from Ao Nang to Klong Muang, is the
13
place to experience the peaceful lifestyle of the local Muslim community. Home accommodation is available, or you can simply make a stopover and see the production of handmade products such as batik paintings, pineapple-fiber paper and coconut shell carving. Wat Klong Thom Museum features various kinds of beads, stone tools, and stone and earthen ornaments in animal shapes of approximately 5,000 years old, uncovered during archeological excavations. Fire dancing, part of the beach culture, is a popular evening activity on the beaches of Koh Lanta and Koh Phi Phi, performed by acrobatic boys who swing burning torches around their bodies, creating sparkling artistic pictures. Ban Sang-Ka-U is a sea gypsy’s settlement in south-east Lanta Yai. It is there that an old clan of traditional Chao Ley try to preserve a disappearing way of life in this fast-developing island.
THE TOWN
Small, charming, silent at times, nice for a day’s walking tour. Krabi Town is full of old buildings, bars and restaurants, local exotic marketplaces and food stalls at the old Chao Fa pier where to sample the local food. The Krabi motto is: “lovely town, lovely people”; Krabi’s simple people are definitely proud
14
of their town and of their warm and generous character. Hop on a longtail boat at Chao Fa pier and visit Khao Kanab Nam, the unique pair of hills facing each other on the opposite banks of the Krabi River, symbols of the town; or embark on a journey to Koh Klang, an island next to town on the mouth of the river, where you will experience lives lived by the local fishing communities; or charter a boatman for a visit to the mangrove backwaters.
THE TEMPLE
Located just 9 km from Krabi Town the Wat Tham Seua, or Tiger Cave Monastery, is one of south Thailand’s most famous and interesting forest temples, as the monks live, meditate and worship within a maze of natural caves in an overgrown jungle valley. Many Thai women live out their old-age there as nuns. Explore the inner cave used by monks for meditation. Climb the 1,237 steps up a limestone tower to see the statue of the Buddha and the “footprint of the Buddha” embedded in the rock, and to enjoy one of the best viewpoints of the area. Take the circular walk through Krabi’s rarest of all features, a pocket of primary lowland forest, a circular rocky basin enclosed by high cliffs. Here, along a pathway used by monks to meditate and amongst a number of magnificent trees you can be amazed in front of the largest flared root base of any tree remaining in Thailand.
Krabi Province is a haven for sun worshippers and pleasure seekers and is also one of the world’s best destinations for activities such as rock-climbing, scuba diving and kayaking. Krabi Magazine gives you our top 10 list of activities to try here in Krabi: Kayaking This is a hugely popular activity in Krabi. The mangroves, caves and of course the beaches, provide plenty of great opportunities for kayaking. The Ao Nang/Railay area is popular as it’s close and convenient but if you’re feeling a little more adventurous, book yourself on a tour to Ao Thalane or Bor Thor in Tarn Boke Koranee National Park. The caves, grottoes and lagoons make for a great day of fun and adventure.
Rock climbing and Railay Beach Combine a trip to Railay Beach with some rock climbing and serious beach time and then sample some of the local nightlife. Krabi is among the World’s best destinations for climbing. The Railay peninsular is home to the local climbing scene and is considered a mecca for the sport. There are hundreds of bolted routes in the Railay area as well as rockclimbing schools that can provide guides and equipment. Railay, once the sole preserve of backpackers has become a favourite holiday destination, combining 2 world class beaches, excellent dining and some funky after hours haunts to down a few bottles of local brew.
Wat Tham Suea A hike to Wat Tham Seua or Tiger Cave Temple is exhausting, exhilarating and ultimately hugely rewarding. Once you’ve climbed the 1,257 steps that lead to the hilltop temple you’ll be met by stunning views over the surrounding countryside. The glorious Thai countryside having transformed into swathes of lush greenery by the monsoon rain. Combine the temple with trips to other destinations like Sa Morakot or visit as a separate Krabi Town day trip and combine with trips to the market. Sunset stroll along Ao Nang esplanade/Noppharat Thara Beach Sunsets over Ao Nang and Nopharrat Thara are probably some of the best you are ever likely to see. The monsoon rain brings storm clouds that hang ominously over the bay creating dynamic sunsets that bathe the bay in sumptuous light. Walk along the esplanade to get some great views of the longtail boats bobbing on the water or just sit on a bench and watch as the sky transforms. Evening in the Last Fisherman Bar/Sea Food Restaurants at Noppharat Thara and Ao nang After a sunset stroll there’s no better way to finish off your evening than chatting over a cocktail or two or indulging in some great seafood. If you finish your walk in Ao Nang continue along the road by the police box until you come to the Last Fisherman Bar, one of Ao Nang’s best night-spots. It’s the perfect place to relax and enjoy a drink by the ocean. The seafood restaurants at the other side of Ao Nang Beach or by the very end of Noppharat Thara beach are a must for a local fish fare.
15
Markets Experiencing the hustle and bustle of a local market is great fun. Krabi and Ao Nang are blessed with some great markets and (Krabi town boasts the biggest covered market in southern Thailand) There’s a market operating on any given day of the week selling everything from fruit and vegetables, household items, clothes and shoes, snacks, BBQ meat, Muslim curries and more. Try the Thursday market or Saturday markets in Klong Haeng. Sa Morakot A trip to Sa Morakot or the ‘Crystal Pool’ can be combined with trips to other beauty spots such as the hot springs. The so called ‘Emerald Pool’ is fed by a natural spring and gets its name from the glorious colour of its water. Perfect for swimming, it makes a great day out and a nice break from the beach. The rainy season is a great time to go; more water and less people. The best way to visit is on a tour, making it easy to combine it with a trip to nature’s own hot tub –
Ao ThalaneTrips
the namtok ron (hot springs) a series of splash pools fed by a natural thermal spring. Koh Hong Archipelago No trip to Krabi or Ao Nang is complete without a trip to Koh Hong, the stunning group of islands lying off the Krabi coast. The beaches of Kong Hong never cease to amaze visitors with their crystal clear water and stunning white sand. The beaches in Ao Nang can become rough and windy in the wet season but the beaches on the islands lying in the Andaman Sea remain calm and good for swimming. Koh Hong has two glorious beaches a lagoon and national park land – a real island paradise. Local Nightlife If drinking prodigious amounts of local brew is on your agenda then seek out one of Krabi Town or Ao Nang’s more lively night spots. In Ao Nang, Luna Bar is a popular joint for movers who want to bust some shapes on the dancefloor. Vodka or whiskey buckets are usually
Hong Island Trips
the order of the day. If you want to party Thai style then head to Centerpoint in Ao Nang or Kansas Saloon in Krabi Town. Aircon ad non, with lots of whiskey on ice flowing, these places are an experience. Live music, dj sets and semi-clad dancing girls are what you can expect. For a less salubrious night out, try Soi Salai opposite McDonald’s in Ao Nang. This clusters of neon-lit ‘beer-bars’ are often friendly and good fun and many have cable TV and free pool on offer. The next place for entertainment are the bamboo huts opposite Siam Commercial Bank for a relaxed chillout evening. Longtail boat trip to Krabi mangroves The mangroves that fringe the coastline of the various islands divided by the maze of canals are thick and impenetrable. A nature longtail boat tour of the Krabi mangroves-populated canals, with great views of local wildlife and scenery, will enhance your Krabi experience. Charter a boat driver at Chaofa old pier for the longtail trip, usually lasting 3 hours.

HELPING EACH OTHER IN TOUGH TIMES Several provinces of Thailand were subject to severe storms and flooding in the last few months of 2011. These floods have changed the lives of tens of thousand of people, ruining their homes and in some cases affecting their businesses and/or the businesses where they were working prior to the flood. This included a dozen of Pimalai staff’s families, whose homes were badly hit and partially destroyed during the storms and the subsequent flooding. A helping hand was needed and it did not take long to set up donation boxes within the resort’s staff restaurant, allowing all to show their generosity through helping those in need. In the end, a total of 35,000 thb was collected and shared between the staff members who had suffered property damage due to the flooding.
GM Frank de Lestapis, Management team & some of the staff affected by the flooding.
About Pimalai Resort & Spa Peace, Serenity, Solitude… These are the words that come to mind for award winning Pimalai Resort & Spa. Add to that elegance, nature and genuine friendly service. The resort combines all the right ingredients – subtle five star comforts, natural beauty, far from the crowds, with no noise except the sound of the waves sliding in and out and slowly breaking onto a pristine sandy beach. Sofitel Krabi Phokeethra is launching a whole new concept in spa treatments with an exclusive combination of the best in Asian and European techniques and designer products, introducing So SPA. We talk to Resident Manager, David Daguise, and get the scoop.
KRABI MAGAZINE: Can you explain a little about the concept of So SPA? DAVID DAGUISE: Nowadays, even though spas are a “must have” in luxury hotels; our property has reached a level of demand and perfection that we at Sofitel Luxury Hotels had to re-think and go one step further. In constantly evolving world moving faster and faster, it was a necessary to move towards a tranquil and pampering environment for our guests, more than any other spas have ever done before. Guests and travelers want more... more pampering, more personalized and exclusive experience, more authenticity. Not only that but they also want to benefit more afterwards and in the long run. More than a treatment, we want to create an experience. KM: What is it that makes it different? How does it differ from other spas at luxury resorts in the Krabi area? DD: First of all, I would like to mention that Sofitel Krabi Phokeethra is proud to introduce So Spa as well as the first to open in Thailand in collaboration with the famous brand L’Occitane. To reach the level of demand mentioned above, we will play on 4 key factors that will allow us to deliver what is best for our clientele. So SPA will be based on fluidity where we will break the “sanctuary” walls of spas and focus more on an inviting and socializing space. We will also emphasize on the intimacy of the place by creating a very personal and exclusive experience from start to finish. In line with our French DNA and cultural mix, we decided to have a partnership with L’Occitane and Ytsara so that we could create the perfect blend and ensure efficiency. This will also combine the best traditions with the best ingredients and practices, for which our therapists are fully and professionally trained.
20
KM: What products does So SPA use? DD: The key of success of our So SPA is based on the use of the finest ingredients and products. We are using two different types of products. We are very proud to open the very first spa with L’Occitane in Thailand. L’Occitane is a unique brand focusing on creating harmony which links the pleasure of the senses with your inner balance. All products are manufactured in a time-honored traditional way using fine natural ingredients like almond, cherry blossom, verbena and lavender, and coming from the ancestral French Provence. We decided to blend French culture with the famous Asian traditions with Ystara. Focusing on wellness, nurturing the body and balancing your mind, Ytsara products will help you to soothe your soul
and rejuvenate. Same as L’Occitane, Ytsara products are 100% derived from plants which guarantees the highest care. KM: What kind of signature treatments do you have? DAVID: We have three signature treatments. The first one is the So Exhilarating Body Massage; recognized as a euphoric and soothing massage, combining a tonifying and tasteful experience that will shape and tone up your silhouette. The second one is So Rejuvenating Facial Treatment which is a refreshing facial treatment made with honey and cucumber and, combined with French techniques to bring back a youthful and healthy look to your skin. Thirdly you may want to choose the Ethnic Fusion Massage, which will surprise you with an exceptional sensorial experience, inspired by the best world techniques. Those three signature treatments strive to mix traditions with our French “Savoir faire” and cosmetology. KM: What packages are there available for couples or singles or those looking for something extra special? DD: So SPA has a myriad of treatments for singles and couples. We suggest different options from 60 minutes to 240 minutes. You may want to opt for an Aromantic Dinner Experience “à deux”, composed of a traditional steam bath, followed by L’Occitane Relaxing Aromachologie massage and a romantic candlelight dinner. In a more traditional way, the Krabi journey lets you enjoy the benefits of a detoxifying steam before being wrapped in organic rice paper and turmeric detoxifying body soufflé. This is followed by our Spa finger food before relaxing with our Aromachologie massage and red rice Mediterranean facial. The Duo Combo perfectly combines the “his” and “her” spa journey, with Thai aromatic steam and an Aromachologie soothing bath. You can make your experience extra special by combining your treatment with a bottle of champagne and a box of chocolates! KM: Any other things? DD: So SPA at Sofitel Krabi Phokeethra is all about sensation and relaxation. Our therapists and I are looking forward to welcoming you so you do not miss the opportunity to transform your spa experience into a So SPA.

Climbing I was at the foot of diamond cave wall where many climbing schools have claimed it as their territories. Of course, the beginners have to start it somewhere. The Diamond Cave wall is a good place to start because there are many 5a routes for beginners. It’s better than doing a beginner’s course in an indoor climbing gym if you ask me. I climbed a 5a route there last year with a friend who is a climber. So, this year I was back here to take a rock-climbing course for beginner. There were a few instructors there, coaching their students who were up on the rock. I was there watching, watching the beginners and then watching their instructors interacting with each other. Many of the beginners looked a bit stressed except the guy with frizzy hair. Actually, he didn’t look like a beginner. The air was a bit tensed. An instructor greeted me and then we started to chat a bit. Eventually, I ended up booking him as my instructor. See, in the end of the day, being friendly does matter. Krabi province in Thailand is a heaven for climbers. There are more than 500 routes bolted on the limestone cliffs on Tonsai beach, East Railay, West Railay and Phranang beach. It is also rated as one of the top climbing destinations in the world. Every year, a rock climbing competition is held sometime in April, which attracts top climbers from all over the world. Of course, I was not alone to do this. Tomix, a friend who flew in from
22
Bangkok to join me on this trip, also wanted to try out rock climbing. So, off we went to N Joy rock climbing school to book the course. A half-day beginner course costs 800 Baht with climbing gear provided. We were sitting at the guesthouse’s canopies view restaurant, having lunch and nervously waiting for the hour to
come. Frankly speaking, I was really nervous as the time came near. All of a sudden, Tomix came up with questions such as: “what about if we fall and die?” I never really thought about this until he mentioned it. I guessed he was as nervous as me, as if the nervousness was contagious. My heart started pounding so much that I needed to take a deep breath. I was nervous because I had
Tom
Digression done it before and I knew exactly what to expect. It’s about confronting your own fear; it requires a lot of courage and strength just to make that step, the first step and the first cling on the crag. That afternoon looked really cloudy, as if it would rain anytime. Somehow, we decided to do it just to get the whole thing out of our system. I told Rain, my instructor, that I didn’t want to go to Diamond Cave wall; I wanted to do something else. So he suggested going to Phranang Cave wall to try out the beginner’s routes there. Rain helped me to put on the adjustable harness while Tom, another trainee instructor, chose the rock climbing shoes for us to try on. Rain put the shoes and chalk bag on a carabineer and hooked it on to my harness. We then walked along Phranang beach, which was dotted with semi nubile Western men and women. We made our way into the bush when we reached the end of the beach. Then, we found ourselves heading towards a trail up to the foot of the cliff. Our instructors had taken their shirts off, showing their well toned triceps, biceps and not-soobvious-yet six packs for us to marvel at or maybe just for me to marvel at. Tom then started to lead climb, which means setting up the route with rope, while Rain belayed him. So, the moment
finally came: it was my turn to be on the crag. I was excited but still nervous at the same time. It was smooth going in the beginning, I managed to reach the holds on the crag and moved upward without much difficulty. My arms became weaker and weaker as I moved on though, and eventually I was stuck a quarter of the way to reach the pitch. The next hold was a bit too high for me to reach and my legs couldn’t find the next step. There I was, clinging to the crag with all my might yet unable to move on. I was tiptoeing like a ballerina on the tiny steps on the crag long enough that my legs started wobbling. `Move your left foot to where your knee is. Move your right hand up high.’ Rain instructed. All I knew was that my hands and feet were unable to move because I was so powerless. I told Rain that I needed to rest, and he asked me to let go of the holds and turn around. I was in a sitting position as if there was a transparent chair in the air for me to sit on. I tried to enjoy the mind-blowing view of the nearby Phranang beach from up high but it was hard to do so because I was dangling up there, only supported by a rope tied to my harness and controlled by Tom. No, you don’t really want to be in that position for too long. Of course, I could choose to return to the ground without completing the route, but I was determined to make it to the pitch
and touch the ring. I eventually turned around and started clinging to the crag again and made the final attempt, making it to the top like a miracle. I guess God must have secretly held me with his right hand. It was Tomix’s turn. Like me, he too had a tough time, but somehow made it to the top. After trying out rock climbing for the first time, he realized that this sport was not his cup of tea. It started raining, and we had to move on and get into the cave. It was really dark inside. Rain gave each of us a tiny torchlight. There was a bamboo stair for us to climb and reach the deeper part of the cave. After climbing another bamboo stair, we finally reached the final part of the cave, where there is a cave window. From there, we could marvel at the outrageously gorgeous view of the bay. To get back, we had to abseil to the ground from the cave window. My heart started pounding wildly again. Of course, Rain showed us the technique of abseiling and the safety procedures. Tom was already abseiled down to the ground and he would be down there watching us closely. I volunteered to go first; I started the descent by sitting back into my harness and relaxing my grip on the abseil rope little by little, so that the rope could slide through a kit called ATC that was attached to my harness. I reached the ground slowly and steadily.
23
It was time for the final climb after all of us reached the ground safely. Tomix decided to give it a miss while I was so eager to give it another try. This time, I made it to the top effortlessly. It was a photo worthy moment of glory. I felt really dignified and empowered. The experience was almost divine. Since then, Krabi has become my second home.

Factfile
Even if you are not staying in Railay, try to pay the Railay Beach a visit, if only to see magnificent sunsets. The geographical position of Railay West Beach is such that it offers its visitors an excellent vantage point to view the sun setting in the most harmonious blend of colors. If you are based in Ao Nang, catch a longtail boat at any end of Ao Nang beach. The sun sets at around 6.15pm and by 6.45pm it is already dark. Try to get back to Ao Nang before 6pm as it may be difficult and much more expensive to get a boat back after this time. From Railay West to Railay East is a 5 minutes walk, and 10 minutes more along the cliff base to reach Pra Nang Beach. There you can find vendors selling shaved ice with a choice of native fruits or beans and melon syrup, peeled pineapple, BBQ chicken, and if you are in for a quick bite you can get hot food from a longtail boat snack bar. THE CLIMBING LINGO Multi-pitch climbing is the ascent of climbing routes with one or more stops at a belay station. Each section of actual climbing between stops at the belay station is called a pitch. The leader ascends the pitch, placing gear and stopping to anchor him to the belay station. Belaying is the technique of controlling the rope so that a falling climber does not fall very far. While this task is typically assigned to a belayer, self-belaying is also possible as an advanced technical climbing technique. The term belay is also used to mean the place where the belayer is anchored; this would typically be a ledge, but may instead be a hanging belay, where the belayer is suspended from anchors in the rock. Quickdraws or carabineers are used by rock climbers to connect the climbing rope to bolt anchors or other protection while lead climbing.

SPORT Story & Photos by : Daniel C. Docto
Welcome to Ao Nang Krabi, the paradise destination of Thailand! Have you heard a truck driving around Ao Nang advertizing a Bar… calling out to everyone to experience their drinks… “Mai Tai – Mai Tai – Mai Tai !! ” Actually it is not a drink; it is Thailand’s National Sport: Muay Thai.
Can you hear it? “Muay” means to Fight, “Thai” means Thailand and one English translation of this sport is “Thai Boxing”. It is the oldest sport in Thailand, there are fights almost everyday somewhere in Thailand, 365 days a year. There are Government Champion Stadiums in all 77 provinces of Thailand, around 1,000 Muay Thai gyms in Bangkok, pound for pound the Thai Fighters are undefeated and they are know as the Kings of the Ring! Ao Nang has one of the largest Stadiums in Southern Thailand; they try to bring the best of the best from all over and sometimes the Bangkok Champs come down to fight our local Champs. My name is Daniel C. Docto aka Khru “Doc”; I owned my own Muay Thai gym in California, USA, and I have been in Thailand for over five years now. I support and do some English announcing to help out the Stadium in Ao Nang. I also train at the local Muay Thai gyms in the Ao Nang area. There are KO fights every Friday night at the Stadium, in high season they add an extra fight night on Mondays. Feel free to contact me if you want my help for you and/or a group to go to the KO Muay Thai (not Mai Tai) fights!! Muay Thai fighters use eight weapons in their fighting style and they have five different techniques; these make an endless amount of combos that usually result in a KO = Knock Out. These eight weapons are 2 Rocks (the Fists), 2 Knives (the Elbows), 2 Clubs (the Knees) and 2 Baseball Bats (the Leg Shin bones). This gives fighter Boxing,
26
Elbow strikes, Knee strikes, high, middle, low Kicks and Stand up Wrestling moves which makes a total of five different techniques of attack. It is the most powerful stand up fighting system in the world, which is very simple but has a complexity of combos that makes the sport a fighting Chess game. Muay Thai is the hardest sport in the world because it is a bone weapon sport with the number 1 goal to KO the opponent. In a fight you will actually hear bones crack; many of us fighters remember this when our shinbone hits a table and the pain quickly brings back the old memory… ouch! In Southern Thailand the number 1 weapon is the knee to the stomach. Science studies on YouTube have found out that when a Thai fighter grabs the head of their opponent and pulls it in the opposite direction of their knee strike, it generates the same amount of force as if being hit by a small car. The knee strike is the most frequent cause of KO in our Ao Nang Krabi Stadium. Number 2 weapon is the elbow strike. Elbows are known as the “Knives of Muay Thai”. Elbow strikes are the number one cause of blood in Muay Thai fights, because when the elbow bone hits any part of the head, the skin splits and the blood freely flows. You will notice on our Muay Thai Champion’s faces in Southern Thailand there are many scars from these elbow strikes… ouch again!
Now, here is an amazing fact about Muay Thai: it is taught by Buddhist Monks at some Thai Temples! The monks’ ancient purpose of teaching Muay Thai is to have Thai young men to learn humbleness. Only in Amazing Thailand can the people use the hardest sport in the world to teach their young men humbleness. I am an American, this concept is unbelievable to me and to many foreigners who do not know the history behind Thailand’s National Sport. We only know fight TV shows, Rambo movies and other macho–prideful types of attitudes, but
MUAY THAI LINGO Muay Thai: Thai-style boxing Paa Pan Mue: Bandages worn under gloves Ram Muay: Boxing dance, part of the pre-fight ritual Wong Muay: The orchestra that plays during matches Mong Kon: The headband worn during pre-fight ceremony Run: Weight category Sanam Muay: Boxing stadium Sangwien: Ring Ropes Wai Kroo: Obedience to the teacher, part of the pre-fight ritual. Wehtee: The ring, a stage
humbleness… wow, this is something! I will end with this: Muay Thai is known as “Hard as a Diamond and Soft and Smooth as Thai Silk”. Again, we foreigners can understand the hard diamond part, but very few know or understand the soft, smooth, silk thing. Thai people love the soft side, moving and flowing to make their opponent mad and to miss so they can give a counter KO strike. I have trained at more than 30 different gyms in Thailand, and in three of them where no foreigners have ever trained; to say the least, I have had some amazing experiences in these. One is this soft side of Muay Thai, and most of the Thai Champions I have met are very humble, soft, feminine, funny and love to serve you. Many of my Thailand trainers have taught me to go Sabai Sabai, that is to say to relax, have fun, humble my heart, be soft and let my feminine side come out (what??). One reason why the Thai champs are so good at the elbows strikes is this type of fighting mode. They are relaxed, soft, sneaky and smooth, which makes the elbow like a knife. You do not use force or power when cutting with a knife. You relax and flow so the blade can cut. Stunning concept. These are only a few amazing things about Thailand’s National Sport… “ Muay Thai – Muay Thai – Muay Thai ”!!!! See you at the fights and may you continue to have an amazing time in the Paradise of Ao Nang. SawazzzzzzzzzzzDEE krap. Doc.

DISCOVERY Text by : Thom Henley
The Viking Cave restaurants have recently taken over many former establishments on Phi Phi Don, and the Viking conquest continues.
Just north of the entrance to Pileh Cove - Koh Phi Phi Lay the limestone opens into a massive gaping grin. This is the entrance to the celebrated but ill named “Viking Cave.” Seamen, over the centuries, marked their harbour days here by depicting their vessels in primitive and sometimes skillfully executed paintings on the cave’s entrance wall. Arab dhows, Chinese junks and other boat drawings testify to the historical wealth of traders in these waters. As one drawing in particular resembles a Viking ship, the name Viking Cave has come to apply. A far better reason to continue with the misnomer is the fact that Scandinavians today make up the vast majority of visitors to Phi Phi. Viking bars, Viking dive shops, Viking bungalows, and Viking
28
The main attraction of Viking Cave was never a bit of graffiti on the cave walls but rather the opportunity to view birdnest gatherers in their deathdefying occupation. How the Chinese ever discovered the waxy saliva secretions from a certain swift let (that builds its tiny cupshaped nest hundreds of meters out of reach of any possible predator in the total darkness of a cave) makes good soup is anyone’s guess. But discover it they did, and for centuries coastal climbers have risked life and limb to get at these coveted nests. Bird-nest gatherers along the entire Thai coast work for a single concession holder, who purchases the rights to this lucrative trade from the Thai government. As the nests are virtually worth their weight in gold, armed men guard the entrances to every commercially viable swiftlet chamber during the nesting season late February to April of each year. The Viking cave, until quite recently, was an exceptional cave for bird nest gathering. It even had a film and book
made about it. One can still get a glimpse of what these men go through in the course of their very dangerous trade, and so the cave is a popular stopover (though it is no longer possible to enter the cave, n.d.e.)… Bamboo poles lashed together with sturdy rattan jungle vines are the primitive ladders used to reach the cave’s ceiling and hidden recesses. Balancing a torch and a pronged pole for prying off the nests, and still managing to hold onto the bamboo ladder, the nest gatherers perform their extraordinary feats. The Edible–nest Swiftlet secretes a waxy filament with its saliva and attaches this filament to the limestone rock face to form a tiny nest. This first nest of the season is pure white and the highest quality for soup. After the original nest is stolen, the parent birds work diligently to create a second nest, which is somewhat darker and a lower grade on the market scale; it too is stolen. The exhausted birds somehow manage to complete a third nest in which they are finally allowed the privacy to lay their eggs and fledge their offspring. Once that nest is abandoned, this lowest grade of nest, black and soiled by droppings and molted feathers, is also harvested. Most bird lovers find this industry too distasteful to ever consider trying the soup, but should you decide to do so, as a farang you can pretty well be guaranteed paying Grade One nest prices for Grade Three nest soup.
The Deadly Delicacy by Sarah Rooney, San Francisco Chronicle, excerpt
Allure of bird’s nest soup endangers Swiftlet colonies High in the caves of Thailand’s idyllic southern islands lies an unlikely treasure that people are willing to kill for - the nest of a sparrowlike bird called the Swiftlet. Companies have been granted concessions by local governments to gather Swiftlet nests for the lucrative bird’s nest soup market. These concessionaires are so secretive about their operations on about 140 cave-ridden limestone islands that few Thai officials have any idea what they are up to or are willing to provide much information. But it is no secret that Swiftlet colonies are being depleted to supply Chinese restaurants with edible nests from glutinous globs of dried bird saliva that are cooked in a broth. The soup is popular because it is believed to help growth, skin complexion and sex drive, prevent lung disease and stave off aging. When a Swiftlet’s cup-shaped nest is taken before it can lay eggs, the bird is forced to build another one. In the caves, collectors shimmy up bamboo poles lashed together with liana vines. Death and injury from falls are not uncommon. The climbers typically take two nests from each bird, allowing the bird to rear its young in a third so the population can regenerate. But high demand has increasingly caused gatherers to take that nest as well, and baby birds are sometimes thrown away. A local source familiar with the bird’s nest industry said there are only onethird as many nests as there were a decade ago, and the Swiftlets have abandoned many caves. Today, millions of nests are sent to Chinese communities around the world. Hong Kong is the world’s largest market, followed by the United States, mainland China and Taiwan. Some call it “white gold,” because a kilo sells for almost $3, 000. Thailand exports several tons annually. Until 1997, the bird’s nest industry was governed by a 61-year-old law. Then new legislation decentralized control, giving local governments the power to grant five-year concessions to the highest bidder in exchange for tax payments collected.

Monkeying Around If you are staying around Ao Nang during your time here in the Krabi province, you are sure to find yourself on the beach at some time or other. It’s convenience is one of it’s major plus points, being just a hop, skip and a jump away from the main road, smack in the middle of the town. As well as being the place to sit and stare dreamily out to sea, or lie soaking up the tropical sun before plunging into the warm surf, it also houses another little known attraction that is definitely worth a look - especially if you have kids with you. At the East end of the beach, if you are walking with the ocean
30
to your right, you will come across what looks like a dead end - lots of rocks and a lush jungle canopy that towers hundreds of feet above your head. If you look closely up in the treetops, you may see some of them start to shake. This is actually home to a large group of small apes, called Crab Eating Macaques, sometimes known as Long Tailed Macaques. These cheeky little monkeys are long time residents of our town, having lived here for many years - long before us humans came and started to build our resorts on their patch. They are extremely resilient and have adapted over the years to our presence.
Macaques live in groups containing anywhere from 5 to 60+ animals, normally containing 2 to 5 males and 2 to 3 times as many females. Their groups are female-centered, as the females remain in one place across generations and the males move in and out of these female-based groups. So the women run the show! The size of the group often depends on the level of predation and availability of food. Since there are not many ape-eating predators along Ao Nang beach, thank goodness, they are fairly safe amongst us humans. There also does not seem to be an issue with the availability of food, as you will see if you take a trip down that end of the beach. They are knows as omnivores, meaning they can eat a wide variety of animals, plants and other things. Although up to 90% of their diet consists of fruit and seeds, they will eat almost anything they can get their hands on and are not afraid to take something if they like the look of it.
women have even capitalized on this by setting up little stalls where you can buy bunches of bananas to feed them. The macaques are very used to the presence of humans and are not to be feared, although it is important to remember that they are still wild animals and should never be teased with food. If they manage to grab your snack, just let go and do not try to fight him for it - trust me it will not end well for you! These animals may look cute and cuddly, but they are tremendously
This would be a good point to remember if you happen to wander around here munching from a bag of crisps or a nice juicy slice of pineapple that nice massage lady just offered you‌ Yes, they will think nothing of snatching the food from your hand and even climbing up onto your shoulder to eat their bounty, much to the squeals of delight from children watching their father hopping around trying to get the hairy thief off his back whilst attempting, yet failing miserably, to keep his male ego intact. Normally, they all come out together as a group, and just as suddenly disappear back into the canopy in the blink of an eye. During the dry season when there are plenty of curious people on the beach, they can often be seen by the dozen, scampering brazenly across the sand looking for mischief. Some of the local strong and will fight viciously for food, as most wild animals will. They make for a great photo opportunity and this is a great alternative to buying a photo from the Thai man in the street with the baby gibbon around his neck, as these macaques are happily free in their natural element, and they are not being forced to do anything they do not want to do. As long as they are happy, they will be content to be close to you for maybe half an hour or more. This is a great thing to do with your family, as the kids just love seeing the apes up close and personal. If you look closely, you should even see tiny babies clutching on to their mothers tummies for dear life. As well as Ao Nang beach, macaques are also a common resident at the Tiger Cave Temple near Krabi. This is worth a visit as well, as they are pretty much a guaranteed sighting any time of the day. And the best part is they are completely free to watch! HOW TO GET THERE Walk down to the beach from McDonalds, or along the beach road, until you reach the longtail boat booth and the traffic police quarters. From there, continue along the pedestrian path along the beach, pass Ao Nang Villa Resort and Golden Beach Resort until you get to the gate. Pass that, walk through Last Fisherman Bar, along the massages area, and through Last CafÊ’. Pass the Buddhist spirit house and reach the end of the beach; it is there where monkeys gather, playing in the water and waiting for humans to bring them food.

ADVENTURE Story and photos by Stefano Bonasini & Marina Ognibene
Defined by people I know and by the guidebooks as a ‘simple trek’ of 3.7km, the Tup Kaek-Hang Nak Nature Trail will allow us to experience unprecedented views of the whole area surrounding this strategically positioned mountain. So we decided to do it.
Hang Nak Trek We left Noppharat Thara by moped in direction Klong Muang, following the coastal lane, passing the Sheraton and Sofitel and other 5 star resorts until we reached the end of the tarmac road. There, by a parking lot where a resting area has been set up, we were greeted by the noise of the small stream and its minute waterfalls in the tropical rainforest. What a change from busy Ao Nang, and at only 30 minutes from it; from chaos to silent forest. The notice board that represents the various stops within the track we were about to embark on made us pretty excited
32
to start the trek inside the Hang Nak Natural Reserve. The footpath is initially wide and pretty easy to follow, slowly climbing through the lush forest. We crossed two small bridges, followed the course of the river and of its water drops, and gradually experienced a change in the path: after about 700mt it becomes steeper, with some pretty tricky sections that can be negotiated thanks to some wooden balustrades placed at the side of the climb. The forest around the path got thicker and
lusher, with old trees having small signs with their botanical names in Latin, and other small boards with a description of the habitat we were crossing. Along the way, we made the acquaintance of some of the place’s friendly inhabitants: a fantastic specimen of a petite iguana, an apparently harmless centipede, and several birds of the most distinct singing; despite the increasing sweating we managed to keep the enthusiasm high. The first viewpoint we reached gave us a great view over the Klong Muang beaches. We continued upwards only to reach, after about 2.8km, the fork that would take us either to the peak of the mountain or to a waterfall. We chose the right side, taking the easy path that ends under a rocky jump covered in moss where, from a wide crack in the rock, the waterfall is born. We rested a few minutes
sitting on the benches available, silent in respect of the nature surrounding us. We finally returned on our steps and took the path to the peak. The track is not particularly difficult there and, throughout a slow climb, bestowed on us the amazing panorama of a second viewpoint, certainly of a wider view than the first one. The path eventually slopes up to a higher point at circa 540mt of altitude, from which the forest opens up to a fantastic 360 degrees view: Laem Hang Nak cape, Noppharat Thara beach, Poda Island and other nearby islands, as well as an hinterland of magnificent hills and limestone karst mountains that seem to sprout up like mushrooms from the thick forest below. We stood a few minutes on the rock at the top, letting the wind refresh us, marveled by the beauty of a place nearly unknown to tourists, before reluctantly starting our way back.

DINING
Friday Grill at Bellini
Amari Vogue Krabi
by Filipino duo composed of male guitarist R.J. and lady singer Valerie, playing ballads, bossas and jazz tunes (Valerie & R.J. play daily at Belliny from 5.30pm to 9,30pm). The quality wine from the extensive wine list helped me enjoy the great atmosphere. The main courses choice comprised a wide range of dishes suitable for Thais and foreigners: green curry with shrimps; stir fried chicken with cashew nuts; and a few more. I finished the lovely meal by tasty desserts such as mango and sticky rice, chocolate mousse, apple crumble, chocolate sacher torte, cheesecake and tiramisu. I was indeed impressed by Amari Vogue Friday Barbeque, and had a relaxing work-week ending under the stars at Bellini. I arrived at Amari as the exhilarating fire show had already started and salsa and dance music was playing. Fire shows are a Krabi institution, and Santos, a local guy famous in the area, performs acrobatically every Friday on the beach, right next to the Bellini dining area. A great welcome to a special night out. I had a chat with Amari Vogue GM Michael and Bellini Chef Giovanni before sitting and thinking on what to start with from the sumptuous buffet line full of ambrosial courses ranging from salad bar with assorted fresh green vegetable and various dressing. The place was packed of customers enjoying the evening breeze and the stunning views from candle-lit tables. The Barbeque line is where I went for a taste of fresh grilled barracuda, mackerel, prawns, squid, beef strip loin, marinated chicken with assorted satay Barbeque sauce, Thai spicy sauce, green peppercorn sauce, peanut sauce and mustards baked potatoes and corn on the cob with condiments. Not bad at all for a dinner under the stars accompanied by the lovely music
Bellini Friday Grill Special is 899 thb THB per person (half price for children under 14). For more information and reservations, call 075 60 7777.

What is Yoga? These days, it is becoming more and more attractive to do yoga. But what does exactly Yoga mean?
T
he word Yoga can be confusing, so let’s clarify by saying what Yoga is not. Yoga is often been interpreted to be mere gymnastics, thought to be a superstition or a sect, and sometimes believed to be a kind of mysticism or a religion. Even in many places in India, Yoga has become mostly gymnastics or contortionism, and it is mixed very much with Hindu religion. You enter an ashram, and there is a temple in the center. This seduces westerners obsessed with their bodies and looking for “exotic spirituality”, but it has nothing to do with real yoga. If you try to qualify Yoga from a scholarly standpoint, you would find out that yoga can be qualified as a science; not as western science, but as a positive science. It can in fact be qualified more as an empirical science, based on individual experiment. If you want to do Yoga, this is a practical and pragmatic approach. Yoga in Sanskrit means “union”. Pantajali - 150 BC, was an Indian yogi and the compiler of the Yoga sutras, an important collection of aphorisms on yoga practice - defines Yoga as the union between the individual soul and the universal soul. More than 120 texts define what Yoga is, but instead of going
36
through all of them, I will tell you what Yoga does, practically speaking. Then you will understand why people approach Yoga, what they obtain from their practice, and then you can define for yourself what Yoga is: a philosophy, a lifestyle, a moral, an ethical system, a form of healing, or whatever else. The first result that appears from practicing Yoga is physical effects related with health and with the body. Yoga deals with healing, health, vitality, revitalizing, regenerating and all kinds of physical issues. Even though we should keep in mind we don’t focus on the body or on physical appearance, the body is our instrument here. And we need a good, healthy strong instrument. Yoga does not believe in healing, but in self-healing, because you must turn your life to be able to heal yourself. And everyone can do this, it is not a matter of being flexible or physical; it is a matter of being able to focus your mind. If you practice staying within yourself, being in a posture and still observing what is happening within you, witnessing your thoughts going away and grabbing them back to the present moment, then you are doing Yoga.
There is a place in Ao Nang, surrounded by nature, where you can have a moment just for yourself, practicing yoga. Marina Yoga offers classes for participants of all ages, nationalities and physical constitution, because Yoga is much more than that...
The next level of accomplishment in Yoga can be defined as a higher life quality. In which way? Any physiologist can tell you that the human being is using between 3.5 and 5 percent of the brain. So in this way, Yoga simply says: you can push your limits, you can do more, and you can live more intensely. Intuitively, people sometimes know that Yoga gives them exceptional self-control, more focus, more power of concentration, more calmness‌  This leads to the third level. The spiritual realization of the human beings in Yoga is termed as self-knowledge. Why did the Yogis say that it is important to know yourself? Because self study and self-discovery helps you reconnect with your true self and be in peace with yourself; you are ready to deal with the world outside on a more harmonious way.
Marina Yoga offers Yoga, Reiki, Kids Yoga, personal training, detox programs and more. Feel free to call 087 8981506 if you have any question or if you like to visit Marina Yoga center. You can also visit www.marinayoga.com

EVENT MANAGEMENT
Thailand Wedding Destination
Scandinavian weddings have found a new oversea destination Krabi, bounded by the emerald green and blue seas and lush green mountains.
38
More and more Scandinavians are choosing Krabi for wedding functions for the last three years, say Thai tourism board officials and Norwegian owner of event management company Thailand Travelling, Ingeborg Fallet Christensen. In an interview with KM, she said she has organized over 52 weddings in Thailand this year, with several functions already been booked for next year. Thailand Travelling takes up the entire responsibility of organizing the weddings - right from transfer to and from airport in Krabi, holding the wedding ceremonies, reception, shopping and local transport. Marriage tourism on the rise While Bangkok has been hosting most wedding functions for the last few years, Krabi is increasingly emerging as a definite site for such events, say tour operators and Thailand tourism board officials. This has given rise to what is being touted in Thailand as “marriage tourism which also affords an opportunity for a honeymoon for the newly wed couple on the exotic beaches and islands in and around Krabi without much additional charges. A wedding and honeymoon package The travel to and from Thailand for weddings and the honeymoon can be had as part of a package which works out cheaper for people wanting to avail the opportunity, say Ingeborg. The holding of Scandinavian weddings in Thailand has helped give a boost to burgeoning number of tourists from Scandinavia to this country whose six per cent of GDP is contributed by the tourism sector.
Do it Krabi is the perfect place to wed in the tropics: surrounded by beautiful landscape with spectacular rock formations, bush tropical forest and crystal clear ocean water and an abundance of lovely tropical islands and white sandy beaches. A rich and exciting cultural life, with friendly and helpful local residents, makes your stay here one you will cherish forever. Imagine your engagement on a beautiful tropical island. Exchanging wedding vows on a powdered white sandy beach. Being blessed by up to 9 monks in a traditional Thai wedding ceremony performed in one of the most beautiful temples in southern Thailand. Cocktails and dinner on the beach, under swaying palms, by the pool in a private luxury villa, looking at a tropical sunset. A marriage in a tropical paradise, on a palm lined beach, with warm, turquoise waters lapping at your feet is something many people have dreamed about. Now, Norwegian tour operator Krabi Spesialisten and Thailand Travelling offer couples the chance of such a wedding.

ART
Dharma Artist Group Art Exhibition at Krabi Contemporary Art Museum Last month I attended Dharma Artist Group exhibition and showcase event and thought it was excellent.
T
he opening ceremony was presided by personalities like ex Krabi Mayor Khun Chuan Phukawluan and Krabi talented artist Boonkasam Saekow. All artists exposing were present, and all stated they felt the Dharma influence their work as artists, and in particular in the colossally sized paintings exposed. Khun Pakdee Limphong, from Bangkok, described his huge piece of art depicting a canyon landscaping, inspired by his time in the southwest of the USA. Khun Baanying Emjaroan is a woman artist who manages to communicate her virtuous emotions like mental peace, purity of mind and love, accomplishing paintings of dewdrops of an amazing beauty. Chinese-born Wang C. Ching is an artist of genuine oriental spirit, who immortalizes the spirit of mother earth and sky through different styles. It was a pleasure to get to know them all and to discuss their works of art. Genuine art has the power to awaken and liberate. Dharma Art can be defined as creative work that springs from an awakened state of mind, and is characterized by nonaggression. It provides a vehicle to appreciate the nature of things as they are and express it without any struggle or desire to achieve, as Buddhism teaches. All exposing artists described a work of Dharma Art as something that brings out the goodness and dignity of the situation it reflects, a dignity that comes from the artist’s interest in the details of life and a sense of appreciation for experience, extending the principles of Dharma Art to their everyday life.
Krabi Contemporary Art Museum The Krabi Contemporary Art Museum is located on Isara Road in Krabi Town, opposite the main entrance of Wat Kaew temple in Krabi Town. Thai and international artists exhibit there, with exhibitions comprising a huge variety of art mediums ranging from acrylic and oil paint, to graphite, pen and watercolour. Tel. 075 630062, email: krabiartmuseum.2551@gmail.com Open Tuesdays to Sunday, 10am to 5pm, closed on Mondays. Car parking available. Dharma Artist Group exhibition should last until 20th January.

JANUARY EXHIBITION
THE MAGIC OF COLOURS Opening on the 25th January at 3pm and lasting until the 10th February, the exhibition The Magic of Colours by two German female artists living in Khao Lak promises to bring colour and abstract art to the Krabi Contemporary Art Museum. Monika Koppold experiments with various techniques and created her own style by integrating a variety of natural and building materials, precious metal and glitter effects. Ursula Spraul-Doring has been living, painting and writing for three years in Khao Lak. Her subjects are as fascinating, she is able to translate her feelings, thoughts and experiences through the medium of art into abstract paintings. Don’t miss this injection of art in Krabi. A little surprise gift awaits each guest at the opening reception.

DESTINATION
Koh Jum Koh Jum, also known as Koh Pu, named after the 420 meter high mountain in the island’s rugged north is situated halfway between Krabi and Koh Lanta Yai, 25 km from Krabi Town. A large Muslim populated sub-district of Krabi, Koh Jum is home to 1,500 inhabitants in three tiny fishing villages. The population engages mostly in fishing, rubber cultivation and the local craft of cloth weaving. While the north is mountainous, the south comprises dense jungle, cashew nut trees, rubber plantations, casuarinas and nipa-palms. The string of beaches on the west coast has several simple, wooden bungalow resorts and one resort community of private beach homes,

Koh Jum is ideal both for young travelers who want to rest their bones after some hard backpacking and for families with kids, looking for a worry free holiday in a place where children can run and swim in complete safety. Nature is at your feet there, and if it’s serenity you’re after, you can’t go wrong. Electricity just arrived in Koh Jum a couple of years ago; some smaller resorts are still powered by generator. Change is imminent; visit Koh Jum before it develops.

Getting There There is a ferry terminal about 35 - 40km south of Krabi town, in a place called Laem Kruat, that can take you to the islands, the last one departs at around 3pm. It costs around 50 Baht per person. Another option is to take a ferry directly from Krabi or Koh Lanta. This might be an easier and more reliable option for most people. A new ferry service has started from/ to Koh Phi Phi Islands. A short stop into your nearest travel agent will furnish you with the latest times and tickets for your journey. Contact the resort you wish to stay at for assistance with transportation.

NATURE SERIES
The Gik Tree Story : Jeffrey Dietrich Photos : www.kohjumbeachvillas.com Gaze upon any of the coastal trees exposed on the beach above high tide and you can’t but admire their resilience. They are hammered by salt and wind, grow in sand while exposed to the tropical sun and survive long periods of no rain or violent summer storms. Amongst the many coastal trees there is one, a noble tree that stands out in combining toughness with the most delicate and fragile beauty. This is the Gik tree.
Flower starting to open at 8:30PM
The Gik tree, or Barringtonia asiatica, is also called Sea Putat or Poison Fish Tree. It has a most bizarre-shaped fruit and like the Coconut, the fruit will drift on ocean currents and travel for thousands of kilometers colonizing new coastal areas. This explains this species pan tropical distribution. The leaves are thick and waxy and a beautiful green with a yellowish white thick central vein. The tree can reach enormous size as can be seen from the picture here taken of a specimen growing at Tarutao National Park. It is a fairly common tree here on Koh Jum. The delicate and fragile beauty of this tough tree is in its magnificent flower, which shuns the day and appears only at night. It only lasts a few hours with the bloom fully opening a
Same flower at 10:00PM couple of hours after sunset and by the following morning all that remains of the blossoms are the petals and stamens lying on the beach.
A huge specimen of the Gik Tree photographed at Tarutao National Park
Fruit of the Gik Tree and can drift on ocean currents
The tree brings forth only a few blossoms every night but can flower any time of year. Night-flowering trees and plants are pollinated by a nocturnal pollinator. In the case of the Gik, this may be a bat or a moth. One could perhaps sit quietly for hours by a blossom and wait to see who comes to visit. I did this one night for a couple of hours and noticed only ants visiting the flower. It was nevertheless a most worthwhile exercise for I witnessed this stunning flower as it unveiled itself in full splendor.
UNDERWATER WORLD
The Tank Bangers Through the mediums of music, film and comedy - The Tank Bangers aim to unite marine focused conservation groups and research initiatives around the world. Together we can shout a louder message that warns against the continued mistreatment of our world.
H
ow on earth did a bunch of diving instructors decide that enough is enough and want their say? Sitting on the edge of the stunning Red Sea in Sharm el Sheikh, Egypt, home to one of the natural wonders of the world and of the Ras Mohammed National Park. The people involved in The Tank Bangers are from all walks of life: previous lorry drivers, IT engineers, bankers, soldiers, nurses etc, all enjoying their new lives as diving instructors and guides. In December 2010 a series of shark attacks changed the world for us and for them. There are many reasons why these attacks happened, and it is not because sharks are evil. But the world media went shark hunting mad, and the tourism industry in Egypt took a massive hit. The Tank Bangers were so angry, and with a huge amount of time on their hands. Then on one quiet sunny afternoon during a fun dive they decided to make an underwater music video, nothing more than a spoof, something fun to pass the time. They filmed a crazy comedy version of Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody and people liked it. And while The Tank Bangers laughed at their own antics, they thought of writing their own song about the blue, a song that shows the world how it could be, what they have done and how to change ways. This is their song, “Our Blue”, and your song, and a message to the world. They have been singing ever since: for you, for themselves, and for our world. 10 month in the making, 7 minutes long, hundred of dives and thousands of takes, costing a small fortune, but it is done. The Tank Bangers hope you enjoy it and get behind them, as there is much yet to do. Please share it and buy it, and sing it far and wide. This is our chance to sing for our oceans. The proceeds from the sale of the song will be given to the organizations shown in their website.

Culture and Merit-Making
Koh Lanta is situated in the southernmost tip of the Krabi province. It consists of two islands, Koh Lanta Noi and Koh Lanta Yai. Koh Lanta Noi is the smaller of the two islands and does not have tourist facilities. Visitors traveling by road from the main land pass through the smaller island on the way to Koh Lanta Yai, the center of the tourist operations. Ban Sala Dan village, in the north of the island, is Lanta Yai’s commercial center, and the pier where visitors arrive on the island. It is a row of shops, seafood restaurants on stilts, dive shops, tour operators, banks and guest houses that cater for new comers on the island. The bulk of the Lanta beaches lie along the west coast of the island and can all be reached by road: Khao Kwang, Khlong Dao and Phra Ae all have long stretches of white sand facing the Andaman sea, while Khlong Khong, Khlong Nin and Ba Kan Tiang and other smaller bays are all nice to relax and swim.
The east coast of Koh Lanta Yay is flat and has many local villages scattered along its coastline. Koh Lanta has a very diverse cultural mix of people who have lived on the island in harmony for hundreds of years: Thai-Muslim, Thai-Chinese and the original sea gypsies still inhabit the place in harmony. The biggest town on the island is Lanta Old town. Boat trips to Koh Lanta are available during the monsoon
free period from October to April. May to November see the closure of some of the island businesses and of the boat passenger services due to rough seas. A minibus service is the alternative way to reach the island via land. Lanta Old Town It was once called Ban Si Raya and was the commercial port for Chinese and Arabic trading boats that sailed between the ports of Phuket, Penang and Singapore. Today it is a village with a few rows of stilted shop houses home to an ancient community that was established on the island long ago. It is a picturesque place with, these Chinese timer shop-houses date back 100 years, from the old days of sea trading. Near the shacks along the coast, local fishermen dock their longtail boats giving the whole scene a very Thai look. Ba Kantiang Beach Spectacular crystal–clear seawater and soft white sand, romantic sunsets in utmost privacy, this is why Ba Kantiang has come to symbolize a hideaway in Lanta for relaxing in natural surroundings. Lighthouse on Lanta Located in Tanod Cape, on the southernmost tip of the island, the lighthouse tower of Lanta is the perfect symbol of solitude. It is the place where immaculate nature still survives as it is rarely reached by tourists due to the rugged road conditions.
Koh Lanta National Park The park covers a marine area dotted with several small sandy islands surrounded by coral reefs. The headquarters is located on the island’s southern extremity. Ban San-ka-u A sea gypsy’s settlement in south-east Lanta Yai. It is there that an old clan of traditional Chao Ley try to preserve a disappearing way of life in this fastdeveloping island. Eco-tours These are run all year round from the east coast of Lanta Yai, not affected by the low season rough seas. Make your way to Thung Yee Pheng village for a trip with a local community, or book a tour with friendly and experienced local companies. Nature Because of its bio-diversity and richness of natural resources, Lanta is a good place for trekking. Explore limestone cave chambers and passageways in the Lanta caves, or walk upstream to the spring water waterfall, where to swim in cool rock pools. Fire Dancing This is definitely one interesting part of the Lanta beach culture. A fire dancing show is usually performed by young boys performing twisting acrobatics swinging burning torches and ropes lit on fire around their muscular bodies. A distinguishing show that sparkles in the dark.

NATURE TRAILS
Kao Mai
Story & Photos : Steve Crawford
Adventure Down Under
A
dventure can take many forms. Maybe sushi for the first time, a new relationship or job, or even a first time bungee jump on a windy day. They all qualify. Webster’s dictionary defines adventure as “an exciting or remarkable experience.” It’s when we break out of our daily routine and dare to take on a new challenge, boldly going into territory that is unfamiliar to us. Going into unfamiliar territory summed things up for me, when I recently decided to visit Kao Mai Keao, a series of underground caves on the island of Koh Lanta. Exploring a cave for recreation may be called caving, potholing, or spelunking. OK, then it’s a spelunking adventure.
52
The Kao Mai Keao Cave is located just off the lower of roads that cross Koh Lanta, and can be very easily reached by motorbike, however inexperienced you are. Turning off to the caves you are greeted by a dusty dirt road that winds through well-established rubber and palm plantations. This is an area of the island that is home to a large population of local Muslim families. These people live their lives in harmony with their surroundings, utilising the red alluvial soil to produce a variety of crops amongst the encroaching jungle vegetation. Arriving at the office and meeting quite a few other ‘spelunkers’, we were issued with headlamps and given a brief outline of what lay ahead in the next few hours. As we set off, the overpowering jungle humidity made me appreciate our guide’s advice that we should all carry some drinking water. At this point I must add that he also advised us we may get a little muddy, and
that a pair of trainers may have been more suitable than my adventure flipflops! Our pathway led us up through tropical vegetation, and when possible we took advantage of a rope or vines before emerging higher up the mountainside.
Being surrounded by such a thick blanket of jungle, I asked our guide how on earth they ever found the cave entrance in the first place. It was a story that actually describes real adventure. As the story goes, 30 years ago a cousin was
Keao Cave searching for wild bees’ honey. He had observed bees disappearing through the bush and into a cave opening in the rock face and followed them in with only the assistance of a cigarette lighter. As he went deeper and the gas began to run out, he sliced up his flip-flops and burnt the slices as a torch (I knew my flip-flops might be handy!) After further exploring into the cave system with the aid of a torch, a network of over 100 underground chambers was discovered over the years that followed. The fun began for us when we descended through a small indistinct hole in the rock and entered the series of diverse caverns that lay hidden below. Immediately you notice an earthy smell that fills your nostrils and the coolness of the air. Following our guide we clambered, without too much difficulty, along bamboo bridges and sturdy wooden ladders. Along the way our guide pointed
out places of interest such as a fossil of ‘who knows how many years old’, and the classic cave experience: stalactite and stalagmite formations. My mind wandered to how this place would make a perfect natural wine cellar. At times the spaces ahead of us appeared as big as church halls, and in others you had to duck and squeeze a little to continue on. The effects of water over thousands of years on the limestone walls had left some very impressive results. The remaining crystals and minerals that remained threw off diamond like reflections into the beams of our torches. Water stains on the walls took on mystical perspectives when viewed from certain angles. No doubt about it this was an underground wonderland that had been born through the forces of nature and time. We walked in silence as torch beams guided us through the dampness. I tried to imagine in my mind just what this all would be like during a rainy wet season. Our guide kept us together as we began to ascend towards small system of crawl through tunnels. On the other side, a side passage opened up and we were overawed by a cavern roof that was covered by hundreds of hanging bats.
Ahead we saw beams of light piercing the
darkness that indicated our route into the outside world, and back in the humidity of the forest we rested and dwelt on what we all had just experienced. It had been both adventurous and rewarding, and trooping back down the mountain jungle track seemed a breeze. On the way down I began to consider just how I was going to get all the wine up into that cellar…
Kao Mai Kaeo cave is open all year ‘round depending on weather. Entry is 200 baht. Thai restaurant and toilet facilities are available at the base car park. Elephant trekking can be arranged into the surrounding rainforest. Flip-flop manageable but not recommended. Difficulty out of ten: 4.
Tip: Take a backpack and bring an extra pair of footwear just in case you have these types of unexpected adventurous.

ODDITY Story by : Junie Kovac
T
Toilet Lessons
his little cartoon was inspired by Monica and Pavel, some of my regular customers here at Time for Lime. We had such good times together during their stay, and on their last night, for some reason I can’t remember we came upon the subject of toilets in Thailand. Since Time for Lime is one of the first bungalow operations on the Island (built 16 years ago), the toilets where build the “Thai way with a little Western fling”. My clients commented on the butt shower, which they thought was to clean the bathroom. They also asked: “how do you flush the toilet?” They thought the water bowl was to wash their feet.
A tricky subject to talk about…
I laughed and said: you’ve been staying here for 14 days, why didn’t you ask this before?” to which they replied: “why didn’t you show us how to go to the toilet in Thailand in the first place?” This is of course not the first thing you do when customers check in. We had great fun joking about this. We discussed and laughed how to let western people know about Thai toilets. A week after they left, a French cartoonist heard that I was looking for an illustrator to make a little storyboard about this. And here it is.
55
- spectacular views - 4km from Ao Nang - 100% freehold for foreigners - rental management - display villa already built - available to own now at a special price
DID YOU KNOW? - This is the most eco-toilet to use, as western toilets use excess water to flush. Actually, it is something to think about since Koh Lanta has a very fragile environment being an Island under quick growth. - Many people think that this is unhygienic, to wash your “under things” with a hose and your hand. Butt hey! How can you get totally clean by using toilet paper that spreads bacteria around? The Thai way, you wash your hands afterwards of course. - You should only use your left hand to wash your private parts. - Thai people squat for long periods without any difficulties or losing their balance. I think it’s about what they eat. Their bones and body are much more healthy than Western people because they don’t eat or drink dairy products. No cheese and no cow milk, which build up excess calcium in your body, so you get stiff and little flexible. Also, good Thai food should not be oily (if you get oily food usually it’s a bad chef ). Instead of using a lot of oil to stir-fry food, we substitute it with a good homemade stock (bouillon). So, thumbs and left hands up for Thai food and Thai toilets!
FACTFILE Why use toilet paper? No need to flush our forests We’re facing mass wildlife extinctions this century. One big reason: the human population explosion and resulting habitat loss. You might be surprised to learn how our personal hygiene choices affect wildlifehabitat loss. According to the WWF, almost 270,000 trees are either dumped in landfills or flushed every single day. About 10% of that total is toilet paper. Trees of the Amazon, Southeast Asia and America have been targeted by the pulp and timber industry for decades, but now the boreal forests of Russia, Alaska, Canada, and Scandinavia face the growing threat of chainsaws. North America’s rate of toilet paper consumption is stable, but the rate is increasing almost everywhere else, as developing countries aspire to Western ways. Westerners are often intrigued by the use
of water instead of toilet paper throughout Thailand, and are perplexed when they find that almost every bathroom they encountered in the country has a bucket of water with a scoop floating on the water. Most bathrooms also have a hose coming out of the wall next to the toilet, especially if the toilet is the kind where you have to squat over a porcelain hole in the floor. Sometimes the hose has a simple nozzle or a nozzle with a squeeze handle. Bathrooms with hoses generally do not have toilet paper, as it’s customary to use the hose and sprayer instead. So if you are having some plumbing work done on your house back home and want to save the forest by using less toilet paper, plan to install a hose and nozzle like the ones so prevalent in Southeast Asia. Maybe you will stop consumption of home tissues altogether.

MARINE LIFE Text and pictures by Celine Levy
Releasing Turtles in Koh Lanta This story started one year ago, when the Marine Endangered Species Unit from Phuket Marine Biological center, collected green turtle eggs from the sandy beaches of the Similan Islands. The eggs were incubated for 60 days, and then the baby turtles were raised in tanks and fed with sea grass for the next 10 months.
S
adly, those turtles are reported as endangered species. With this process, the scientists tend to increase their chance of survival. The size of a one-year-old sea turtle in captivity equals the size of a 3-4 year old sea turtle in the wild, and this is the age when they start returning to coastal areas after living their first years out at sea. Therefore it’s the ultimate time to be releasing captivity-bred hatchlings, as their survival
for a ceremony, and finally 39 turtles were released into their natural habitat: a dozen adult turtles rehabilitated after injuries, and the one year old green turtles from the Similan Islands. The ceremony also included releasing 200,000 juvenile crabs. Projects Abroad came to assist the scientists for this important day, with 8 volunteers from the conservation project, 2 from the community project, and 6 staff members. They helped to
rates are the highest. The sea turtle rescue center serves mainly as a rehabilitation area for injured sea turtles. They may be reported by local fishermen, villagers or tourists who find them entangled in fishing nets, hit by propellers or stranded on the beach. The main purpose is to rehabilitate the animals enough to be released in the wild again.
carry the tanks, refill them with water, release the animals into the sea, and collect all the plastic bags that held the crabs. Despite the heavy rain, everyone was very enthusiastic to help the turtles to return to nature. They seemed to be surprised at first to leave the tanks and to face the big blue sea; standing absolutely still might have something to do with the cold rain. Then the instinct took over as the warm wave washed up and made contact with them, and they started to make the move towards the water.
The release day was the 1st of December, few days before the King’s birthday. The tanks were brought to Koh Lanta main beach

. Projects Abroad conservation and Phuket Marine Biological Center will work together from now on. The volunteers will travel to Phuket once a month to help scientists and to get hands-on experience at the center, helping out with the turtles and also assisting if there are any marine mammals that are being rehabilitated. They will also be part of a marine sighting report program to include sea turtles, whales, dolphins and whale sharks which will record specific identification features, location and number of animals seen. With this data, the marine scientists can plot maps of general distribution, migratory patterns and estimates of population sizes. The information is highly valuable when it comes to evaluating the species status and level of protection needed. Apart from the new connection with Phuket Marine Research Department, Projects Abroad continues as well with their numerous actions to preserve mother nature: beach cleaning days, replanting the mangrove and rainforest, underwater debris collection cleaning and reef check surveys. Projects Abroad also go to schools in the local community and conduct educational presentations based on recycling and pollution, hoping that the children of today will be knowledgeable enough to make a different for a better future.

LIVING
All Neat & Tidy Story by : Stefano Gonella
The walk-in closet is a room entirely dedicated to clothes; an elegant and comfortable solution to keep neat and tidy one’s set of clothes, and to access it every time you wish in a practical way.
A
valid solution for those who have lots of clothes and wish to have a space to try them on in complete freedom, the walk-in closet effectively adapts to smaller environments. It is in fact a real miniature room with walls and access doors that is usually placed nearby a bedroom for practical reasons. It is not always necessary to have an extra room to achieve this space: thanks to modular systems that adapt to any need, one can compose tailor-made solutions that make use of all the available space. A few square meters are then enough to have a super-organized space for our clothes. If your room is standard-sized and of a rectangular shape, you can use a whole wall. Calculate an approximate walk-in space of 350cm long plus modules of 50cm wide and a width of 70cm for walking. Walk-in closets are made either of masonry walls or in plasterboard, with a standard or tailor-made interior structure or with boiserie wood panels predisposed to hang shelves, and clothes-hanging bars. Another possibility is to use supporting aluminium frames that can be sided to a wall or positioned in the center of a room so they become dividing walls. They allow using the compartments in full, as they have no intermediate sides. In order to create a walk-in closet in a limited space, you can think of using a corner of the room. The measure of the walls should be around 200cm, decreasing to 130cm if the wardrobe is for a single person. Due to the bulk of the bed, the room depth should be at least 4mt. Cabin locks should be effective, and can be shutter-like, sliding or folding. They have to be chosen according to the cabin’s shape and size and to the environment in which this is located. The shutters are suitable for an opening of maximum 120cm so you can use two shutters of 60cm each. If the opening is smaller, the shutter can be a single one as big as the opening space, with a minimum of 70cm. The folding locks are indicated to close limited spaces and corner spaces as they allow having a complete vision of the inside area with minimal obstruction. When the front space is really limited, then it is advisable to use sliding doors that can enter a wall or slide in front of it, better if externally. It is essential, in all the above possibilities, to have dust excluders profiles. The closing doors can be made of wood or in transparent panels that have the advantage of letting light
through. They are tempered or stratified glass sheets mounted on wooden or anodized aluminium frames. As an alternative, you can use methyl methacrylate, also called synthetic glass, which is characterized by its durability and high mechanical resistance. Another cabin type can have three outfitted sides; usually of larger dimensions, this is often created out of the bedroom so it can service two separate rooms. For a comfortable set up for two people, the room should be 240x180cm. The accessories can be chosen from a wide range of products: hanging clothes bars, shirt trays, extractable shelves, tie-holders, shoes holders and chest of drawers. Thanks to racks, it is often possible to change the position of the elements over the time. For the lighting of the walk-in closet, it is advised to use halogen bulbs or low tension leds mounted on spotlights, which produce less heat than traditional bulbs, don’t alter the fabric’s colours, and consume less. Usually the spotlights are set on the false ceiling or fit in the high part of the closet structure. They often have an incorporated transformer so there is no need for a
69
complicated wiring system. Some walk-in closets have sensors that automatically turn on or off the lights according to the doors movements. Walk-in closets can be produced for any kind of environment, small or large. Most systems proposed by producing companies are in fact designed with flexible modules that can be adapted to different room plans and heights, for solutions almost always tailor-made. Walk-in closets are like intelligent boxes: behind nice and precious surfaces, there hide rational and sophisticated interiors designed to contain, order and protect.

In recent times a further safeguard for property investors was implemented in Thailand through the enactment of the Escrow Act BE 2551. Generally, escrow can be described as an arrangement between three parties, namely seller, buyer and escrow agent, whereby the agent would have to be a neutral third party. Such escrow agent can be authorized to hold funds, important documents (such as title deeds) or other legal documentation to be distributed and released subject to certain terms and conditions, particularly the seller’s and the buyer’s instructions. Typically, such escrow services are performed in relation to property transactions and are primarily designed to protect buyer’s interests until title transfer. Escrow arrangements may also protect the seller’s or agent’s interests. Developers also benefit from a widely accepted escrow system as it helps to strengthen buyer’s confidence in the Thai property market. A well and clearly drafted escrow agreement may ease and simplify a transaction significantly. It allows the parties to authorize an escrow agent to conduct certain instructions relating to a transaction, such as release of funds, documents etc. on the parties’ behalf. At the same time both parties can perform simultaneously as agreed with peace of mind and the assurance that neither party will perform without the other party doing the same.
