Column from Climmar Chairman

EDITORIAL

Full of energy into the new year 2016 is already underway and I hope you had a good start to the year. In the Chinese calendar, this new year is the Year of the Monkey — a year for innovation, entrepreneurial spirit and energy. But irrespective of the Chinese year, these three concepts underpin Kramp's future. They are necessary if we are to continue to prove ourselves as an essential partner for our customers and suppliers.

06|SKF

Everything is on track

So our plan for the future is to continue our development as an e-business, using the latest innovations in the field of IT and e-business technology. This will allow us to take a digital step forward and make it even quicker and easier for you to order parts in the future. We will also look at how we can optimise our distribution centres, both in terms of the buildings and the logistics systems. This will allow us to provide you with an even better service in the future. In other words, we are looking forward to this new year. Despite the increasing pace of change in the market, our ongoing aim is to adapt as effectively as possible. We only have one goal in mind: forming strong

partnerships with our customers and suppliers to ensure that they can become even more successful. As our columnist Erik Hogervorst writes in this edition of Focus, "It's not the strongest who survive, or the most intelligent. It's the people who are the best at adapting to change." And we would like to do that together with you.

products. That is why it is important that our products are purchased from a reliable supplier," stresses Pennanen.

Honda seeks legal redress Companies like Honda are also grappling with the issue of imitation products and the manufacturer is taking every opportunity to stop this. Jo Hubrecht from the HME-L European Engine Center says: "Honda will continue to pursue all legal remedies to deal with the manufacturers and distributors of imitation products. We are doing this to protect the market and, in particular, to avoid confusion for end users. We have been actively pursuing this approach in Europe since 2001 and have initiated more than 385 court cases since then." Hubrecht is seeing a shift in how manufacturers of imitation products are operating: "It started with 100% Honda imitations, including the typical Honda colour combinations and model codes such as 'GX', being offered by Chinese manufacturers under their own brand. Over the years, the imitations have become more "refined". Nowadays, we are predominantly aware of competition from cheaper products, clearly inspired by the Honda design, made by traditional engine manufacturers." This issue is costing Honda money. "We have clearly lost market share in certain non-professional segments such as garden trimmers, scarifiers and DIY power groups. With the introduction of the GP engine, we are trying to win back market share and extend our range with a wider choice of engines with the best possible price-quality ratio. Honda not only wants to produce cheaply, but also to guarantee quality."

10

Moral The moral of the story? When something sounds too good to be true, then it often is. Of course there are sometimes cheaper alternatives, but when a top brand product is offered at a bargain price, chances are high that it is an imitation. Only buy products from a reliable partner and be especially wary of cheap Internet offers. An imitation product may be cheap to purchase, but if it causes a machine to break down, the overall cost is often far more expensive than buying a genuine original product.

Short term farmer confidence negative but future looking up By Meurig Raymond, NFU President

This year has seen British farming face massive challenges, not least of all falling farmgate prices, particularly within the dairy and arable sectors. Given the levels of volatility we have seen across the industry it is no surprise that our farmer confidence survey at the end of 2015 showed confidence drop to lower levels than 2014. 14

our members’ businesses in the coming year. These relate to regulation and legislation (69 per cent); CAP reform (51 per cent); output prices (56 per cent) and input prices (46 per cent). Output prices are the second most important factor affecting confidence, as members have seen their margins squeezed as a result of the fall in farmgate prices greater than the reduction in their costs. These results shows very clearly that we are absolutely correct to continue to urge Defra and RPA to make every effort to speed up delivery of BPS payments to farmers and that we push processors and retailers for a fairer return for the high quality food farmers supply. In the past two years twice as many farmers have seen their profits declining, with 49 per cent of respondents reporting declining profits. Some 7 per cent think the business may not survive

We have heard that there are some key issues which are likely to have a negative impact on

Our annual conference which took place in Birmingham in February saw 1,400 delegates discussing some of the key issues which affected confidence and we will continue to lobby on their behalf to ensure these longer term projections of better fortunes come to pass.

which is the highest figure in any of the six years since we began these annual surveys. These figures become more worrying in the dairy sector where almost 20 per cent of dairy respondents declared that their business may not survive, a rise from 3 per cent in 2014. Regulation remains the key blocker for our members’ confidence. This gives a clear message that the government must do all that it can to ease regulatory pressure. Confidence is critical because it influences investment and production intentions. If we want our farms to compete in an increasingly global market place and make the most of emerging export opportunities, we need government action rather than rhetoric when it comes to reducing red tape. This is why NFU is calling for action in 2016 to reduce the frequency of farm inspections and improve their coordination. Our research has shown that looking forward farmers have a generally optimistic outlook on their medium-term prospects. The Government has a golden opportunity, in its 25 year Food and Farming Strategy, to map the course for a more confident and profitable industry. The NFU urges Government, retailers and the public to back British farming to ensure this optimism is not misplaced. More farmers said they want to invest in diversification, training and energy efficiency in the three years to come.

Meat sector Despite the low prices, it is anticipated that the production of pork will continue to rise in Europe. In spite of this, a decrease in breeding stock is already in evidence. The poultry sector has not seen any sudden surges and is growing steadily. Exports of meat and live animals to Turkey have alleviated the situation in the cattle sector. Given that the supply and availability of meat in Europe is growing, the per capita consumption is also growing.

Conclusion So what can we say? It seems that the trend is cautiously optimistic. But time will tell whether confidence has been sufficiently restored for farmers to start investing again. That would be good news for the mechanisation sector. So we have to wait and see.

SOCIAL MEDIA

Is Facebook really so important now? Social media. You hear people all around you talking about this and as a company you "must" do something about it. But which platform is the best one for you? How much time will this involve? Do you really need it? Dirk Wolbers, Social Media Expert for Kramp, explains the ins and outs. "If you want social media to really make a contribution to your company and your contact with customers, then you need to make the investment. I am talking less about money and more about time here. I think that you should look at the potential return, not what it costs. It is an additional way of getting to know your customers, maintaining contact with them and approaching potential new customers." Being active on social media as a company is about more than just opening a Facebook account. "It is all about relationships, just like it is in 'real' life. It is important that you are transparent and honest. Being active on social media is not a matter of posting new offers. It is about paying attention, listening and talking to one another. It should be packed with fun and, above all, it should retain the human touch." Dirk: "Remember that social media is not just an additional advertising tool. Do not spam your followers with the latest offers or by telling them how great you are. Above all, be sociable. A second tip I want to give you is to FOCUS. Time is precious, so if you want to start using social media, start with one platform and focus all your energy on that. It is better to have a really strong presence on one platform than lots of little bits on various platforms. I recommend starting with Facebook, as this is by far the most popular platform. Use humour and images (videos/photographs) to show your achievements as a company. Paid content may be necessary to quickly achieve high hit rates."

Monitoring Monitoring one platform is fairly easy. If you are using multiple channels (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn), using special software to track all messages may be a wise idea. Three good examples are TweetDeck (free), Sprout social (chargeable) and Hootsuite (free version and chargeable advanced version). Proper monitoring not only lets you become familiar with the customer's world, you can also see what is being said about your business. If this is positive, then great. If it is negative, try to start a conversation and come to a resolution.

20

n

THE MOST POPULAR CHANNELS AT THE MOMENT: Facebook This is by far the most popular platform at the moment, with 1.5 billion users who log on on a monthly basis and more than a billion daily users. Facebook is all about maintaining personal relationships, where an algorithm determines what a user sees on his or her time line. The more you interact, the more visible you will be to your "followers".

Twitter Short messages of up to 140 characters. Even fewer if a photo is attached (a good idea, as it will improve visibility). A good platform for proactively engaging in conversation with potential customers. Messages are public and a # (hash tag) is often prefixed so that messages (tweets) on a particular topic are easy to find and follow.

LinkedIn Primarily a business platform. LinkedIn is mainly used to network and to post and read business articles. LinkedIn is a good platform to assist your recruitment of new staff as many users search for jobs here.

Snapchat Fastest growing platform of the moment that is particularly popular among young people. The concept behind Snapchat is that photos and videos are shared for only a brief period of time (1 to 10 seconds). It is primarily used privately and not very much for contact with other businesses or customers.

Pinterest Platform that allows you to pin images on mood boards. Pinterest is rapidly growing in popularity, both in a professional context and in private use. Particularly popular among women.

Instagram Photo and video platform, became popular due to the filters that can be "applied" to photos. More and more companies are on Instagram.

Working with Mike Lindsay, Kramp Shop Manager, they have completely stripped out and rebuilt the shop and they are now benefitting from the positive results. The new shop is bright, inviting and professionally designed to maximise the business from footfall of customers. In January they registered for the Kramp Web to Print service which allows them to quickly and effectively create product promotions to boost sales. They are also in discussions about the Kramp Online Service, with Gareth excited at the future benefits that the online platform

Further investment will be made in relevant technology to ensure they can run a successful and effective business sustainably.
