Over a hundred ails ing tr kilometres of hik
Left, right, left right ... In love with hiking? Crazy about the freshness of mountain air? If the answer is “Yes”, visit the Kranjska Gora Tourist Information Centre, get a hiking map of the Upper Sava Valley, and discover 20 different waymarked routes through the area, from undemanding recreational trails to challenging treks into the mountains. You can go on a hike from Mojstrana to the foot of the 2864-high Mount Triglav, Slovenia’s highest mountain, passing through the majestic valleys of Vrata, Kot and Krma. Maybe you would rather go on a hike from Kranjska Gora to the

tiny scenic village of Srednji Vrh above Gozd Martuljek, which takes you through the meadows on the sun-facing slopes of the Karavanke mountain chain. The options are countless! Are you a fan of Nordic walking? The hiking trails of the Kranjska Gora, Planica and Tamar areas offer unique opportunities for this perfect activity to keep you healthy and slim. If you don’t have your own walking poles, you can borrow them. And don’t forget about warm-up exercises before embarking on your walk and cool-down and stretching exercises at the end of your walk. It is also important to learn the proper technique so hiring an instructor may not be a bad idea.

Getting the best out of ECO-cycling ... A must-try experience for any cycling visitor is the route between Mojstrana and Rateče, which runs along a well maintained asphalt cycle path past several interesting abandoned railway stations, well worth taking a closer look at. There are no major ascents so the route is also suitable for children, even more so as along its length there are plenty of food and drink outlets to cater for hungry tummies. Well experienced cycling families who don’t mind breaking a sweat can continue to Tarvisio, Italy. While the path to Rateče goes slightly uphill, from
6
there to Tarvisio it is downhill all the way (hooray!). After crossing the Italian border it is well worth making a detour to see the idyllic Fusine Lakes. If for you cycling is synonymous with great exertion, adventure and adrenaline-pumping excitement, you may be the right person to tackle the ascent of the Vršič mountain pass, one of Europe’s most challenging road cycling routes. You may not choose to be among the entrants in the Assault of Vršič, a dream race for any road cycling enthusiast, but you can still pedal up the steep hairpin bends to the top of the pass on your own. If, however, you prefer moderate adrenaline rushes, get a cycle map of the Upper Sava Valley from the Kranjska Gora Tourist Information Centre and pick a route of your choice.

Running downhill wild and free ... Do you take delight in dramatically increasing your heartbeat while riding a bike? If you do, then Kranjska Gora’s Bike Park, with trails for all skill levels, from beginner to expert, is what you are looking for.
8
The park offers three different trails – Downhill, Airline and Lunapark – whose names say it all about the styles of riding you can choose from. Featuring a 350-metre vertical drop, several kilometres of trails with varied surfaces, and all kinds of fun obstacles such as bridges, jumps and teeter-totters, the park has something for everyone who can ride a bike. If you doubt the suitability of your bicycle for downhill riding, you can hire an appropriate bike with all recommended safety equipment from the park. Also available are riding instructors to teach you how to ride over obstacles. In time you may become such an expert that you will be able to enter any of the several downhill competitions organized by the park annually.

Active alpine adventures ... The three As in the title stand for one of the most beautiful ways to experience the Upper Sava Valley, where high mountains are countless, competent mountain guides are born in every village, and state-of-the-art mountaineering equipment is available for hire on every corner. Still, any alpine ascent is first of all a battle with oneself. In the Julian Alps there are about 150 mountains exceeding 2,000 metres in height, 25 of which exceed 2,500 metres, so the opportunities to slow down the frenzied tempo of modern life and listen to oneself in silence are plentiful.
10
One of the Alps’ most majestic mountain faces is the Northern Face of Mount Triglav, showing off its beautiful Slovenian, German and Central Pillars. It is a magnet for alpine climbers and a rehearsal for an assault on the Himalayas. It offers around one hundred different routes, including the famous and technically very demanding Sphinx. You may choose to follow the footsteps of the legendary white chamois buck Goldhorn and traverse the entire three-kilometre wide North Face along the Goldhorn Ledges. For free climbers there is the Squirrels’ of Mojstrana Ridge, and for less experienced alpine climbers the Slovenian or the German Route.

Lush greens for golfers ... By the confluence of the rivers Piťnica and Sava, embraced by Slovenia’s highest mountains, there is a wonderful scenic area for golf lovers with a six-hole golf course suitable both for beginners and skilled golfers.
12
Next to the course there is a practice field where all kinds of strokes can be practised. Golf lessons taught by professional golf instructors can be arranged for beginners. The Kranjska Gora Golf Club is well known for its social side. Visitors are welcome to take part in various tournaments, including some conceived as fun competitions.

nline skating
We inline skating ... If you love this beautiful sport, suitable for those who want to stay fit (and lose weight!), take the route from Mojstrana to Gozd Martuljek. Alternatively, you can begin your inline skating trail in Gozd Martuljek and skate via Kranjska Gora to RateÄ?e.
14
The trail from Gozd Martuljek to RateÄ?e is not very demanding as you only have to overcome a 135-metre difference in altitude. Just be careful while crossing and skating along the main road in RateÄ?e. And, of course, pay attention to cyclists and pedestrians. Consideration and kindness are paramount!

Only a step to the ski slopes ... If you stay in Kranjska Gora, ski slopes are just a step from your room. There are all kinds of them, from gentle slopes for beginners to demanding pistes for skilled skiers. The area’s ski terrains offer you primary, secondary and university education in skiing, plus there are terrains where you can complete a PhD. The local ski schools are excellent and ski instructors are available for hire.
16
Wake up to a tasty breakfast, take your family to the Snow Beach only a short step away, and just enjoy soaking in the winter sun or sliding down the snowy slopes. Science fiction? Not at all. The patient ski instructors at the ski kindergarten, with a little help from the children’s magic carpet, will teach your kids the basics of skiing in no time.

ross-country skiing
Snowy road, here I am ... Cross-country skiing is an unforgettable experience, even more so if it is combined with truly stunning views. While propelling yourself through the idyllic Upper Sava Valley, you can enjoy the backdrop of majestic mountains all the way through, either if you take the route from the centre of Kranjska Gora to the Tamar valley, which takes you past the source of the Sava river and the ski jumping hill at Planica, or the route from Kranjska Gora to Gozd Martuljek.
18
Fantastic cross-country skiing routes run through the fields near RateÄ?e and across the border to Italy. You can also check out the trails in the Mojstrana area. Cross-country skiing through the Krma valley is a must-try experience. Make sure not to miss the Slovenian Alpine Museum in Mojstrana, which reflects the essence of Slovenian alpine climbing.
S
nowboarding
Initiation into the adrenaline-fuelled world of snowboarding ... The snow park at the Kekec ski piste, equipped with beginners’ sliding surfaces, provides ideal terrain to get introduced to the skills and thrills of snowboarding. With a little help from professional snowboarding instructors you can soon learn the basics of snowboarding and embark on an independent career in this adrenaline-fuelled sport.
20
The Kranjska Gora Snow Park is also challenging for skilled snowboarders and freestyle lovers, who can try their hand at a 15-metre rollercoaster box and a nine-metre double pipe flat rail. Stunning jumps can be performed over two sliding surfaces intended for advanced snowboarders, a 12-metre and a six-to-eight-metre roller. The Kranjska Gora Snow Park is Slovenia’s only ski park offering night snowboarding and skiing.

ledging, snowshoe hiking
Let’s have fun ...
Seeing cheerful people on sledges brings back fond memories of childhood. Why not re-experience the joy of sledging? Let a four-wheel-drive vehicle take you to the top of a slope and take a ride down a well groomed sledge run lit with flaming torches.
22
Sledging is also possible at temperatures well above freezing if you go to the 1,500-metre long Furious Pehta summer sledge run, which offers opportunities for both wild and crazy rides and nice and slow sledging with children. How about hiking across endless fields of virgin snow without sinking in? You can do it easily using snowshoes, attached to your shoes by straps, and following a guide to ensure your safety. Snowshoe hiking is one of the most romantic winter activities, offering you an opportunity to reach even the most out-of-reach spots. Using a head torch, you can go snowshoe hiking in the evening and admire the sunset and the full moon.

ce climbing
Icy Snow Whites ... Those hooked on vertical adventures should make sure to climb Lucifer at least once in their life. Lucifer has nothing to do with hell; it is a famous frozen waterfall in Gozd Martuljek. Both Lucifer and the frozen waterfalls at the foot of Mount Prisank and in the Tamar valley are best visited in the company of a guide.
24
If you are a beginner or just someone curious about ice climbing, visit the artificial waterfall in the MlaÄ?ca gorge near Mojstrana. The waterfall is part of a unique ice climbing centre offering equipment hire and climbing guide and protection services so that even total beginners have nothing to worry about. Besides, frozen-waterfall climbing is easier than it appears.
A
ctivities for children
Kekec in Wonderland ... What child wouldn’t want to meet the characters form a famous children’s story, such as the clever little boy Kekec, his fearful friend Rožle and his kind sister Mojca, the frightening herbalist Pehta, and the evil poacher Bedanec from the classic Slovenian children’s tales by Josip Vandot? And what child wouldn’t want to taste traditional food served by Kekec himself? In Gozd Martuljek there is a mysterious path leading to the Land of Dwarves, where children, upon entering through a special door, can meet real dwarves. The families taking the Triglav Fairy-Tale Trail can follow the traces of seven tales from the Kingdom of Goldhorn and taste a giant’s biscuit.
26
In the Upper Sava Valley children are being pampered in a great many ways. They can choose from all kinds of attractive sports activities, including air cushion rides down a 70-metre long tubing run. On a children’s mountain bike, equipped with a protective helmet, they can take a downhill ride across fun obstacles at a children’s mountain biking park and return to the top of the slope on a magic carpet. Downhill riding is also possible on a grassy slope without any obstacles. Rest assured that there is nothing to fear!
