girl with a string

FROM THE PRINCIPAL Dear Parents, Students and Staff In the past two weeks our students have been involved in a variety of cocurricular activities, in sport, outdoor camps and in the creative and performing arts. As well, we have held a number of community events. “Girl with a String” The Edwina Taylor Clark Auditorium was transformed into a stunning theatrical space to present this year’s school play “Girl with a String.” Written and directed by Michael Pigott, the play told a moving story about memory, family and growing up. The story was both inspiring and challenging. Over fifty students from Years 5 to 11 were involved in the cast and production crew, bringing together many different facets of the school community. The production showcased the talents of many of our students, not only as young actors, but also as stage managers and lighting and sound operators. Congratulations to all involved! Special thanks to Director Michel Pigott, Producer Nicole James and Carrie Scanlan, who was responsible for the Tech Crew.

grand parents & special friends liturgy

Year 6 Camp The Year 6 Camp this year was held at Coolendel. For the three days that they were away, students enjoyed the sunshine and activities that promoted trust and effective communication. These camps are especially important for the older year groups in the Junior School, as they create a sense of community and confidence for students before they progress to Senior School. By all accounts the camp was a resounding success, bringing the students, teachers and camp leaders closer together and encouraging all to face challenges. Kindergarten & Year 4 Family Mass The Kindergarten and Year 4 Family Mass and Morning Tea, held last Sunday, was an opportunity for these Junior School families to celebrate the Eucharist and then enjoy morning tea on the Noviceship Lawn. Our celebrant Father Phil Watkins led a meaningful liturgy for all present. I enjoyed chatting to parents of these students following Mass and appreciated hearing of some of the KRB activities in which their children are engaged.

SECTION FROM THEHEADING PRINCIPAL (CONT)

Our Community Our Grandparents and Special Friends of students in Years 5 and 7, enjoyed the Grandparents’ and Special Friends’ Morning held last Tuesday. The morning began with a liturgy where some of our students shared their special thoughts about their grandparents. Grandparents then enjoyed morning tea on the Noviceship Lawn before participating in classes in the Junior and Senior Schools. I am always delighted by the pride the students show in involving their grandparents in their day to day lives as Kincoppal-Rose Bay students, and I am sure that their Grandparents are equally proud of their efforts. Tildesley Shield Twenty-four independent girls’ schools will this week compete in The Tildesley Tennis Shield competition, IGSSA’s longest running competition, which began in 1918. The competition features the best tennis players from each school and as well involves a number of students who act as line girls throughout the competition. We are well prepared this year having recently undertaken an upgrade of the tennis courts and the team has been training hard in preparation. We wish Bijanka Bacic, Eloise Bridgers, Georgina Coutts (Captain), Lucy Cowper, Olivia Forster, Kate Fowler, Garner Hancock, Georgina Harrison, Philippa Harrison (Captain), Laura Kaltoft, Angela Lenehan and Tamara Verus the very best of luck.

With regards Hilary Johnston-Croke Principal

Earlier in the year, students attended a presentation by ACMA regarding safe practices for students in the digital age. One of our students put together the following informative article. The Safe Construction of an Individual’s Digital Footprint by Emilie Bucci, Year 9

One of the great things about being online is the ability to share videos and photos with your friends and seeing their response. Everything you post online contributes to your digital footprint. It is important to remember that what you share with friends may also be viewed by people you don’t know, and once it’s online, it could remain there forever. This is why it is important to pay extremely close attention to the safe construction and ongoing care of an individual’s digital footprint. We are all being encouraged to put aspects of ourselves and our lives on the internet, and much of this content is freely available for anyone to view. Each time we add something about ourselves online, we enlarge our digital footprint, and whenever we mention someone else, we enlarge theirs. Personal information is also routinely collected by companies eager to market their products and can be retained for several years. Equally, your digital footprint can be monitored by individuals looking for information about you. If you are always logged onto your accounts, people could use your details, which is why it is vital that you always log off and keep passwords to yourself. It is essential to keep your digital foot print in order as many universities and employers use the internet to search you and learn a bit more about you as an individual before they accept you. It’s extremely important to protect your identity and digital footprint. Ways to manage your digital footprint would be to keep your personal details private. As an alternative, a nickname could be used. Your password or username should not be shared with anyone; think before you post, as once it’s posted, it can be extremely difficult to remove. Things you don’t want others to know about or that you wouldn’t say to their face shouldn’t be posted. Also, being respectful of others and other people’s content that you post or share is important. For example, if you took a photo of a friend and they asked for it not to be uploaded anywhere; you would respect their wishes and not upload it anywhere. Another example is that a photo that your friend took is their property, not yours which means you should only post it online if you have their permission. You should also never add unknown people on public forums, just to seem popular. If you do, then they have the ability to see everything you put up and can do anything with the information. And lastly, never upload pictures with your school uniform on, of any teachers, or of the school campus.

2 | KRB News Issue 04 | 22 march 2013

If you use social networking sites regularly, make sure to manage your contributions carefully, since much of the information stored online becomes public by default. Be sure to change your privacy settings so your social networking page will not come up on a web search. A useful way to check up on yourself and what the world can see about you is to search yourself in either Google or another helpful website, pipl.com, where you can clearly see what information already exists about you. If there are things on the internet that you would rather take down, act fast to avoid your digital footprint enlarging any further. Anyone who finds out enough about you could potentially impersonate you, so it is vital to watch what personal information is made publicly available. Potential employers have also been known to reject applicants on the basis of information discovered online. It is also important to remember your computer has an IP address which is a number your computer is given when you go online to identify it. This address can help the police locate a computer where people behaved badly online. If aspects of your digital footprint are causing you concern, remove anything from your public profile that is personal, or might cause problems with friends, employers, or school. Always avoid inappropriate language, ill-advised comments or jokes. To safely construct an individual’s digital footprint, it is important to remember to never upload anything without others’ permission, avoid uploading inappropriate content, never share personal information, don’t add people you don’t know, make sure people ask you your permission before they upload something with you in it to prevent your digital footprint expanding, and make sure your privacy settings are changed to private. You have to make sure you monitor your accounts and follow these rules because if you’re not careful, something you may not particularly want could end up on the internet and possibly stay there forever.

REFLECTION “Be content with a little. Don’t desire to go about feeling loyal, or beautiful or heroic... it would be a pose. Be content in general to ‘feel’ quite ordinary, and to act quietly, but always loyally, beautifully, straightly. This will be heroism in the end” – Janet Erskine

BOARDING

Year 11 Ancient History Excursion

Year 6 Coolendel Camp

In-Weekend 2013

On Friday 8th March 2013, the Year 11 Ancient History class went on an excursion to the Alexander The Great exhibition and to the University of Sydney to further our understanding of both ancient societies and archaeology in practice. The Alexander the Great exhibition furthered our understanding of not only the ancient society of Macedon in Ancient Greece but as well of the effect that Alexander himself had as a king.

On Monday 11th March, Year 6 travelled to Coolendel for their Outdoor Education camp. The days leading up to it brought about a particularly excited buzz from Year 6! Although we had visited Coolendel in Year 5 there was still an atmosphere of great anticipation with new, unchartered activities to be ventured. The heavy downpours in the previous day had everyone nervous but luckily the sun greeted us upon our arrival. After some lunch and being allocated our tents, we plunged straight into our activities as we embraced the fresh forest air and tranquil surrounds of the valley. Over the next three days, we undertook a variety of fun-filled activities that promoted trust and effective communication and provided us with many opportunities to challenge ourselves. By far the most rewarding experience for many was abseiling down a 20 metre cliff. The bellows of encouragement and squeals of delight could be heard reverberating around the valley. Other activities included archery, rock climbing, the Koori Experience and canoeing.

In 2013 as result of parents’ requests plus consultation with students I have altered the In-weekend program to increase the number In-weekends. We will keep the In-weekend model for Term 1 to allow the new students to settle in and develop positive relationships with the current boarders and then hold In-nights in the first week of each Term:

At the Nicholson Museam at the University of Sydney, we: ♥♥ undertook a study of mummies from Ancient Egypt, some

dating back as far as 2000 years ago ♥♥ learnt to distinguish between status of the deceased through

the use of typology dating and other such disciplines ♥♥ engaged in a session about human remains, which highlighted to the class thediffering opinions on the state of human remains ♥♥ looked at the difficulty archaeologists have in the deciphering of ancient texts and the deciphering of ancient artefacts- and then the difficult process of dating. It was a successful and informative excursion, the Year 11 Ancient History class certainly enjoyed the day. The furthering of our knowledge of archaeology will be a useful tool in further studies.

‘Girl with a String’

Although the daytime activities had our muscles and minds working, we were eager to share our more creative attributes. On the first night, we held a talent show where Year 6 and the camp leaders displayed dramatic flair through skits, songs and dance. The next night we were treated to a memorable singa-long, led by our dear old friend, Slabby. At the end of each action packed day we retired exhausted to our tents to sleep under the glittering gaze of the stars. The third and final day brought about a mixture of feelings. Although more fun was had by all, the realisation that our final camp with the Optimum Experience crew was coming to an end, slowly sank in. Once again, camp had been a resounding success, bringing the students, teachers and camp leaders closer together and encouraging all to test our limits.

Library Lunchtime Craft

“Parting is such sweet sorrow.” It is with this quote from Shakespeare’s play, Romeo and Juliet that I begin to tell you my sorrow in parting with the school play; Girl with a String. I had the great privilege and honour of being a cast member and now that it is over, I have realised just how fulfilling my hours spent rehearsing and performing were.

Thursday, March 21, was Harmony Day and to celebrate, students got crafty in the Library; creating fabulous Origami rings.

Girl with a String was such a great project to be a part of. Excitement was in the air as we started the show on opening night, as well as a few nerves, I am sure. We were all excited and anxious as we wanted to show the audience all the effort we had made. Over two evening performances, we became the storytellers for an audience who contributed to the vibe and electricity given out by the cast and crew. The whole project wouldn’t have been possible without the Drama teachers and supporting staff who gave up their time to make it possible. I would like to give particular mention to Mr. Michael Pigott, the writer and Director of the show, who kindly offered his time to bring the play to life with us. I would like to finish by saying just how proud I am to claim that I was in the play, and that I contributed along with many, many others to make it as fantastic and enjoyable as it was. I cannot wait until there is another opportunity to be a part of a production as good as this one. 4 | KRB News Issue 04 | 22 march 2013

Term 1 – In-weekend 8–10 February Term 2 – In-night 3 May Term 3 – In-night 19 July Term 4 – In-night 11 October The In-night would be the first Friday of each term; the girls would do activities in house groups on the Saturday afternoon, culminating in Vigil Mass at 5pm.
