timeless In a world of constant change, inspiration is all around us. Verner Panton has made a major contribution in changing the world of design, using unique combinations of colours, shapes and materials. Panton spent a lifetime creating individually inspired timeless designs, still to be found in homes and commercial locations all over the world. When asking people reasons for buying a Panton lamp, a constant theme runs through the answer: “With all the changes we make in our home, our Panton lamp stays forever. So be inspired, and invest in a masterpiece of your own.

take me home I get my best ideas when I’m not supposed to be working. On a vacation, in the theatre, on a bar, over a beer. New materials, new techniques - there are no rules. I prefer the kind of ideas that come up in discussions about the issue. Verner Panton 1996

The most precious thing anyone owns is time. Yes, everybody dreams of more free time and hates the time spent at work. I think that future mechanisation will make it possible to have most of the boring drudgery done by

machines, and that one’s work will become a hobby. This implies, of course, that one works day and night. I know it from myself, and I love it. Verner Panton, 1961

Take me back

Verner Panton (1926-1998), the Danish designer who made Switzerland his home, was much more than a master of sixties’ design. Even though he favoured extravagant designs and the use of strong, vibrant colors, his work was unmistakably rooted in the elegant functionalism of the 1950s. And notwithstanding the fertile imagination and love of experimentation his work demonstrates, he remained a systematic designer thoughout his entire life, who was not content to merely create individual objects, but sought to develop a collection and design the entire room. As such, it is hardly surprising that Verner Panton’s extraordinarily comprehensive and diverse work, to which the Vitra Design Museum is now devoting a far-reaching retrospective, is thought to constitute a considerable contribution to the development of design in the second half of the 20th century.

Visiona 2, “SPIRALLEUCHTEN”, furniture fair Cologne, Year: 1970

Visiona 2. Phantasy Landscape, furniture fair Cologne. Year: 1970.

From the end of the Sixties to the mid-Seventies the chemical company Bayer rented a pleasure boat during every Cologne furniture fair and had it transformed into a temporary showroom by a well-known contemporary designer. The main aim was to promote various synthetics products in connection with home furnishings. Verner Panton was commissioned no less than twice to design this exhibition, entitled ‘Visiona’. The 1970 ‘Visona 2’ exhibition showed the Fantasy Landscape which was created in this environment. The resulting room installation consisting of vibrant colours and organic forms is one of the principal highlights of Panton’s work. In terms of design history this installation is regarded as one of the major spatial designs of the second half of the twentieth century. The creative fireworks which Panton lit with his studio within a preparation time of only a few months for ‘Visiona 2’ is expressed not only in the highly diversified room designs in the exhibition ship, but also in the wide range of furniture, lighting, wall coverings and textiles developed specially for this presentation. Some of these were adapted and went into series production later.
