RECOGNIZE PATTERNS OF TOXIC PARENTING

Illustrator: Dušan Pavlić

Although it seems that the words parenting and toxic should not belong together, the fact is that toxic parents do exist. A person who grew up with a toxic parent is often burdened by numerous difficulties that affect all aspects of their life, including the parental role. Recognizing toxic parenting patterns and distancing yourself from them is important to prevent their transmission from generation to generation, as people who grew up with toxic parents often end up becoming toxic parents themselves.

Nevena Lovrinčević, a psychologist and author of a series of parenting bestsellers, found inspiration in her therapeutic practice for writing a book dealing with this difficult subject.

The book explains why it is difficult to recognize a toxic parent and why we are often unable to take a step back from toxic parental messages and look at them from a different angle. The characteristics of a toxic parent - criticism, verbal aggressiveness, manipulativeness, egocentricity, immaturity, dismissal and disapproval of negative emotions, physical and sexual abuse, abandonment, and neglect - are described in particular. A clear distinction is made between toxic patterns and appropriate ones, that belong to the educational aspect without which the parental role would lose its meaning. Then, the consequences of toxic parenting, which can manifest in many aspects of an individual’s life - professional, social and partner relations, and especially relations with one’s children, are shown and explained using examples.

Especially important is the author’s message that growing up in a vicious circle of toxic parental patterns does not determine one’s present and future once and for all. There are effective strategies for overcoming the consequences of toxic parenting, the application of which makes it possible to break that vicious circle. If you had a toxic parent, although it is something that burdens you, it is not a curse or a scenario that will determine your present and your future once and for all. You cannot change the past, but you can decide what your values and goals will be now. You have the power and you have the choice.

The Learn and try series is meant as an introduction to the world of different professions: botany, meteorology, film directing, archaeology, astronomy, etc. The concept of this series is such that in the first half of the book readers are introduced to each filed of science or profession - the historical background, famous people of each profession, basic concepts and procedures. The second half of the book gives various suggestions on how a reader can try to be one of these experts performing easily manageable tasks and experiments within each field. Each book also contains a part, which should be adapted for the local readership – namely a famous local expert in each field.

The first title was created in 2008 and the rest were made in the following 10 years.

LEARN AND TRY

LEARN MORE ABOUT TRANSFORMED LEAVES

In plants growing in dry regions leaves turn into thorns, which offer the protection from animals and decrease water loss. In plants like these photosynthesis is performed by the green stem, where water is stored as well.

Leaves of some plants turn into tendrils, the fibrous plant parts which wrap themselves around solid objects and other plants. This is what keeps the stem in the upright position and enables leaves on top to expose themselves to sunlight.

The leaf base in grasses and other plants can wrap itself around the stem thus forming a leaf sheath. It protects the tender herbaceous stem and makes it stronger.

The leaf blade of tropical pitcher plant, which feeds on insects, is shaped like a can with a lid. Lured by smells and intense colours, insects fall down the slippery walls into the liquid rich with digestive enzymes.

SILVER AWARD 2012 at BESA competition, which gives awards to the best schoolbooks in Europe.

Children aged 6 and 7 develop logical thinking at a growing rate and that is very important for various mathematical activities that stimulate mental development. The tasks are interesting, puzzle-like and not typical. Coming up with an idea for solving a problem develops the creative potential and intuition that is required for mathematics in general. Both books contain a diploma and stickers which are to be used for rating the child’s performance in solving problems. In this way children are taught to assess their work and judge its value which has a substantial educational effect.

– A ne, Vera! Idemo na klupu. Neka samo neko od njih proba nešto da ti kaže... – držim je za lakat dok se ona lagano otima i polazi ka gradu.

– Nisam spremna... izvini – kaže mi i potrči.
