GARDENING TIPS FOR JANUARY

• Birds: Provide food and fresh water. More birds die from lack of water than from lack of food. • Cacti: Semi-dormant now. Reduce watering. • Camellias: Plants may be moved. Pick up and discard fallen blooms. • Cultivation: Changes in design may now be made, new beds dug and old ones rebuilt. Correct defects in drainage. Incorporate gypsum into heavy soils: repeat in three weeks. Dig granite dust, rock phosphate and quantities of organic matter into soil. Allow time for settling before planting. • Fertilize: Daylilies, spuria, Louisiana and bearded irises with complete fertilizer. Give strawberries 1 teaspoon ammonium sulfate, keeping six inches away from plant. Fertilize pansies with manure tea or blood meal. Water in. • Fruits: Plant fruit trees. Mulch figs with grass or straw to prevent freeze damage to crown. • House Plants: Water, when surface soil is crumbly dry. Wash dust off leaves to open pores. Mist often. Inspect for diseases and insects. Reduce water for poinsettias. • Lawns: Remove thatch aerate, and feed with low nitrogen mixture. • Pests: For petal blight prevention, spray azaleas and camellias as flowers open. Spray for scale with dormant oil solution if temperature will be above 35˚ and below 85˚ for next 48 hours. Always read and heed manufacturer s directions before spraying. • Propagation: Ivy cuttings root easily this month and next. Root cuttings of shrubs in mixture of loam and coarse sand; keep damp and semi-shaded until rooted. • Prune: Fruit trees in advance of new growth. Prune to groom and shape. Do not remove too much. Remove dead wood from trees and shrubs before spring buds swell, but do not prune spring bloomers. Prune crape myrtles. Prune nandina and others of similar growth habit by cutting unwanted canes out at base of plant. • Roses: Annual pruning about the middle of February, just before the spring buds break. To prevent later appearance of disease in the old beds, keep garden clean of debris and weeds. Complete preparation of new beds for roses. • Transplanting: January is one of the best months to transplant woody plants, both evergreen and deciduous, especially trees. Energy will be expended on roots instead of foliage. Learn ultimate size and cultural needs of tree or plant before buying. Consider dwarf varieties to avoid crowding later. Group plants of similar cultural needs. Do not work wet soil. Assure good drainage. Keep plants moist. • Vegetables: Prepare beds, preferably raised for drainage, with about 50% humus, including rotted manure. • Winter Protection: Expect freeze any time; plan for protection of tender plants. Water. Remove coverings, particularly plastic, when temperature rises. Protect low plants with dry leaves, pine needles or soil mulch, but remove when weather warms.

How to Keep Your New Year’s Resolutions It’s a stark irony of the Western calendar that the odometer turns over smack dab in the middle of winter, the one time of the year when most people can’t rouse themselves to clean their bathrooms, much less make an ambitious, life-changing, behavioral U-turn. If you’re the type who likes to ring in the New Year with an engraved list of resolutions, read on for hints about how best to keep them. Aim low. It goes without saying that most New Year’s resolutions are easier announced (or written) than done, but if you set the bar too high, you’re doomed from the start. Instead of a sweeping declaration like “I will lose 30 pounds by April and finally fit into that dress,” target a goal that’s more attainable, like losing 10 or 15 pounds.

Don’t overload yourself. It’s difficult enough for the average person to follow through on one ambitious New Year’s resolution; why on earth would you saddle yourself with three or four? Choose the most pressing issue at hand losing weight, finding a girlfriend, improving your relationship with your parents and concentrate on that. Trying to do everything simultaneously practically guarantees failure across the board.

Tell everyone you know. One school of thought says that New Year’s resolutions are best kept to oneself, but look at it this way: the more people to whom you announce your resolution (say, to get out of your dead-end job by spring), the more people there’ll be to prod you along if you fall behind. There’s no shame in seeking help if you can’t accomplish your resolution on your own.

Reward yourself. Following through on a New Year’s resolution is rarely easy, so a little Pavlovian conditioning goes a long way. If you’ve resolved to shop less, stroke yourself for not buying those shoes by springing for a steaming hot cappuccino at the mall. If you’ve resolved to be nicer to people, buy yourself a nice jacket after enduring that tedious cocktail party without delivering any insults.

Wait until spring. Sometimes the best way to accomplish a New Year’s resolution is to make it at a time of year of your choosing, rather than the one dictated by the calendar. May 1st is a good alternate date, since the change of season will neatly coincide with the change you’re hoping to accomplish in yourself. By Bob Strauss, www.ehow.com.

DRYER SAFETY TIPS

Each year, on average, clogged clothes dryer vents cause over 12,500 house fires, 15 deaths and 400 injuries. Oddly enough, some of the innovative designs of the newest homes put those homeowners at the highest risk. Anytime your dryer vent goes up instead of only parallel to the ground in order to vent out, you have a higher risk of fire. Here are some helpful hints in order to lower your risks: - Clean the lint screen/filter before or after drying each load of clothes. If clothing is still damp at the end of a typical drying cycle or drying requires longer times than normal, this may be a sign that the lint screen or the exhaust duct is blocked. - Clean the dryer vent and exhaust duct periodically. Check the outside dryer vent while the dryer is operating to make sure exhaust air is escaping. If it is not, the vent or the exhaust duct may be blocked. To remove a blockage in the exhaust path, it may be necessary to disconnect the exhaust duct from the dryer. Remember to reconnect the ducting to the dryer and outside vent before using the dryer again. - Clean behind the dryer, where lint can build up. Have a qualified service person clean the interior of the dryer chassis periodically to minimize the amount of lint accumulation. Keep the area around the dryer clean and free of clutter.

- Replace plastic or foil, accordion-type ducting material with rigid or corrugated semi-rigid metal duct. Most manufacturers specify the use of a rigid or corrugated semi-rigid metal duct, which provides maximum airflow. The flexible plastic or foil type duct can more easily trap lint and is more susceptible to kinks or crushing, which can greatly reduce the airflow. - Take special care when drying clothes that have been soiled with volatile chemicals such as gasoline, cooking oils, cleaning agents, or finishing oils and stains. If possible, wash the clothing more than once to minimize the amount of volatile chemicals on the clothes and, preferably, hang the clothes to dry. If using a dryer, use the lowest heat setting and a drying cycle that has a cool-down period at the end of the cycle. To prevent clothes from igniting after drying, do not leave the dried clothes in the dryer or piled in a laundry basket. Fires have been known to ignite in clothes up to 45 minutes after the drying cycle has ended. Visit the FEMA website to learn more, www. fema.gov. Submitted by Dale Ross.

Using Service Learning to Practice Math Skills Preschoolers Collect 366 Food Items for Needy Cypress Families for Thanksgiving

For the month of November, teachers at Montessori Preschool at Copperfield introduced service as a way to inspire math-readiness in preschool children. By collecting cans and non-perishable food items for needy Cypress families, children (ages 18 months to 6 years) practiced counting skills, place value, addition and subtraction at an advanced level at an early age in the name of service. Children established a goal of collecting 65 food items in a month and surpassed their goal by 301 in two weeks. Teachers aided the counting process, introducing place value to understand the value of three-digit numbers and tracking total donations on a large chart. Kindergartners practiced three-digit addition and subtraction problems to account for the total number of food items. All food items will be donated to Cypress Assistance Ministries for Thanksgiving. In addition, students were taught the value of service and sharing, especially in tough economic times when it is difficult to give freely.

Jordan Merecka was born with multiple congenital heart defects, including Dextrocardia (his heart was on the wrong side of his chest). As a child, he experienced two open chest surgeries, several surgical revisions and an implantable defibrillator. For many years after his early surgeries, Jordan was able to live an active childhood. As a teen, he enjoyed hunting and fishing with his father and at school, he participated in FFA (Future Farmers of America). But, in September 2010, Jordan’s heart began to fail and he was placed on a waiting list for a heart transplant. With medical treatment, he was able to attend school as he waited. At the start of 2011, the senior at Cypress Woods High School was looking forward to three major milestones in his life: his prom on May 27th, his eighteenth birthday on May 29th and his graduation on June 5th. In April 2011, his health took a turn for the worse and he was admitted to Texas Children’s Hospital with heart failure symptoms and kidney insufficiency. He critically needed a heart transplant. Over the weekend of May 21st, all of his organs began to fail acutely and he could not breath on his own because his heart was so weak. On May 22nd, Jordan received the Total Artificial Heart that saved his life. Jordan missed his prom, but thanks to a diligent heart-failure team and the availability of the artificial heart, he celebrated his birthday at Texas Children’s on May 29th - a week after his surgery. On June 5th, Jordan watched his graduation ceremony online while his 16-year-old sister walked across the stage to accept his diploma on his behalf. His class rose to their feet for a standing ovation. Jordan has been accepted at

BERYL RAMSEY AND WAYNE VOSS TO CHAIR GO RED FOR WOMEN LUNCHEON SET FOR FEBRUARY 13, 2012

CEO of Methodist Willowbrook Hospital, Beryl Ramsey, returns to Chair the Go Red For Women Luncheon in partnership with CEO of Methodist West Houston Hospital, Wayne Voss. Together, Ramsey and Voss will serve as Co-Chairs and lead efforts to raise awareness that heart disease remains the number one killer of women, but is often preventable with healthy lifestyle choices. This year’s luncheon will be held on Monday, Feb. 13th at the Berry Center in Cy-Fair and is expected to draw more than 400 business and community leaders. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn tips on heart disease and stroke prevention from local experts, listen to a heart-warming story of survival from an area resident, participate in interactive breakout displays and shop the “purse-onalities” silent auction. The silent auction is a unique piece of the luncheon that features items representative of the diverse personalities of the community. Purses can be anything from actual handbags to golf bags to briefcases. This year’s auction will include something for everyone!

Melissa Wilson of Fox 26 Morning News will emcee the event and Dr. Valentina Ugolini of Willowbrook Cardiovascular Associates will be the featured medical speaker. Ramsey and Voss and their team of volunteers have a goal of raising a record-breaking $200,000 to support educational programs that the American Heart Association provides and the life-saving research it funds to reduce the effects of heart disease in women. Today, only 1 in 5 women believe that heart disease is their greatest health threat. More women die of cardiovascular disease than the next three causes of death combined, including all forms of cancer. Go Red for Women celebrates the energy, passion and power that women can use to band together to wipe out heart disease and stroke. To secure a sponsorship, purchase tables and/or tickets, or for further information, contact Priscilla Luna at 713-610-5071 or email priscilla. luna@heart.org. For more information about Go Red For Women, visit GoRedForWomen.org or call 1-888-MY-HEART. Go Red For Women is sponsored nationally by Macy’s and Merck & Co., Inc.

Membership in the CWC is open to all ladies in Northwest Houston/Cypress neighborhoods. Currently we meet the first Thursday of most months at West Houston Church of Christ at 7:00 PM for social time and refreshments, followed by a program at 7:30 PM. The church is located at the corner of Queenston and West Road. Our monthly meetings are not only educational and enjoyable, but they develop lasting fellowships. “I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through JANUARY. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.
