KIDS Folk Life Festival

needs fabric

I am collecting fabric and old sheets to make rag dolls at the KIDS Folk Life Festival on March 31st. At the Folk Life Festival we show people how to make rag dolls like they did years ago from scrap fabric. Last year we had almost 4,000 people who wanted to make these dolls but we ran out of fabric. I had no idea it would be such a popular station, so I am starting now asking for fabric donations. If you have any fabric (cotton is the best) or old sheets, let me know and I can come get it from you or you can drop it off at a school near you and I can collect it there. If you would like to volunteer at the folk life festival, please contact me at slbedwards@att.net.

Mark your calendars for a new holiday this year. US Military K-9 Fund, Inc. is proud to announce the inaugural K-9 Veterans Day on March 13th celebrating 70 years of the K-9 Corps established in 1942. The military working dogs (MWDs) have served since WW1 with little recognition and are still considered equipment by the Department of Defense. We hope this will be changed by Congress with a revision to the Amendment HR 5314, which the Clinton administration enacted to allow these war heroes to be adopted once retired from active service. The revision will make the MWDs active or veteran service-members, which will allow them to be issued many supplies and equipment our organization now sends them. Visit our website to see the contents of our shipments to the deployed MWDs. US Military K-9 Fund, Inc. has adopted one of these magnificent dogs newly retired from the Army. We drove from Houston to Ft. Leavenworth to get her. That was her home base. It is up to the adopter to travel to get their dog or pay for having them transported. We chose to drive and not expose her to a cold cargo hold of an airplane. She will spend retirement helping us raise money to support active duty military working dogs deployed with our troops to the Middle East and other overseas locations. You can join in this effort by visiting our website to donate. Please visit www. usmilitaryk-9fund.org today.

Holy Week represents the last week of Jesus’ life on earth, beginning with his triumphant entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday and culminating with his glorious resurrection from the dead the following Sunday, Easter. This year, Holy Week is from Sunday, April 1st through Sunday April 8th. During this week we will be offering a variety of worship ad fellowship opportunities at their West Road Campus at 18081 West Road (across from the CFISD Berry Center). The following is a list of the Holy Week worship opportunities for young and old alike presently planned at Cornerstone UMC: PALM SUNDAY SERVICES (April 1st): At the 10:45 AM service, the children will lead a processional in worship waving palm branches as we remember and celebrate Jesus entry into Jerusalem. Also at the 8:30 and 10:45 AM services, the Chancel Choir accompanied by an orchestra will be performing their Easter Cantata entitled: “Come Touch the Robe.” The Journey Praise Band will lead an inspirational service at 9:30 AM with a special “Reader’s Theater” presentation. MAUNDY THURSDAY COMMUNION SERVICE (April 5th): The word Maundy literally means “command,” reminding Christians that Jesus commanded his followers at the last Supper to “do this in remembrance of me.” The service will be held at 7 PM and will include an inspirational celebration of the “Last Supper” with the serving of Holy Communion.

THEATER/ARTS COOKS UP HOUSTON’S HOT SUMMER BREAK™ BENEFITS ANNUAL EVENT The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo today announced the launch of a new summer festival, benefiting the Show and allowing Houstonians an enjoyable, refreshing and entertaining break from the city’s summer heat. Houston’s Hot Summer Break, July 4-8, 2012, is an all day, five-day music, food, beer, wine and spirits festival, featuring top chefs and mixologists, shopping, and live music. We look forward to making it one of the best and most successful events of its kind, offering attendees the ability to get away without going away!” Another highlight of the event, a restaurant-style café, will allow attendees the opportunity to sit and enjoy creations from several Houston-area restaurants, cafés and diners, including a wine bar and coffee shop. Net proceeds generated from Houston’s Hot Summer Break will directly benefit the mission of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. Planting the Right Tree in the Right Place CenterPoint Energy understands that the responsible planting of trees is a way to care for our environment and beautify our community, yet we are also committed to the safe and reliable delivery of electricity. Our professional tree pruning program is integrated into our daily operations to help make this possible. Trees that grow close to CenterPoint Energy’s electrical poles and lines will be pruned by a professional tree trimming company under contract with CenterPoint Energy. Any vegetation greater than 10 feet in height will be removed from high-voltage transmission line rights-of-way. Palm trees growing near power lines create unique issues. Unlike other trees, palms grow in a straight, vertical line, with a single growing point at the top of the tree. Because of this single-growth point, normal pruning techniques are not effective. With most trees, crews are able to direct the growth away from power lines using proper pruning techniques, but growth of palm trees cannot be redirected. If you choose to include palm trees in your landscape, CenterPoint Energy recommends a planting distance of 20 - 40 feet to reduce the risk of windblown fronds contacting power lines. Consumers should plant palm trees far enough away from power lines that no part of the tree ever grows within 10 feet of the line. CenterPoint Energy encourages you to plant the “Right Tree in the Right Place” by thinking about the mature height of a tree and its distance from power lines before planting. For more information on safe planting practices and a list of power line-friendly trees, visit CenterPointEnergy.com/trees.

March Gardening Tips vegetables • Plant vegetables such as tomatoes, sweet corn and snap beans and pepper, as well as cucumbers, lima or butter beans, cantaloupe, okra (if the soil has warmed sufficiently - 70 degrees F. or higher), southern peas, pumpkin, squash, peanuts and watermelon. LAWN • Re-sod or replant as needed with turfgrasses adapted to this part of Texas and suited to the planting location (shade or sun). • When resodding semi-shaded areas with St. Augustine, use ONLY the variety Floratam for best pest resistance. See www.plantanswers.com/grass.htm. TREES AND SHRUBS • Plant container-grown trees and shrubs as soon as possible. In shady areas, where grass is difficult to grow, consider planting a dependable groundcover such as English ivy, Asian jasmine, vinca or one of the prostrate junipers. • Prune spring flowering and evergreen shrubs during early March. However, be sure to prune spring flowering shrubs after they have bloomed. • Fertilize with a pre-plant application of a slow-release fertilizer analysis such as 19 - 5 - 9 at the rate of 3 pounds per 100 square feet of garden planting area. Early March is the ideal time to fertilize landscape plants because you give them food just before the spring growing season starts.

A Brief History of St Patrick’s Day The story of St. Patrick’s Day begins around 385 A.D. with a man named Maewyn, who at age 16, was sold into slavery, which brought him closer to God. He managed to escape slavery and headed to a monastery in Gaul to study, where he adopted the Christian name “Patrick.” For the next 30 years, he traveled throughout the country, setting up monasteries and converting the natives. After his death in 461 (on March 17th), he was declared a saint. So what happened from there? The first St. Patrick’s Day Parade was in America in New York City in 1762, not Ireland, and consisted of Irish soldiers in the English military marching through the city. This was a chance for the soldiers to reconnect with their heritage. Ireland, on the other hand, does not have such a long history of St. Patrick’s Day celebrations. This changed around 1995, when the government made a push to use St. Patrick’s Day as a way to drive tourism and to showcase Ireland to the rest of the world. Parades and celebrations are now common in Ireland around this day (in fact, their celebrations last several days) and some one million people took part in last year’s festivities in Dublin. When people nowadays think of this day, they get an image of the shamrock in their head. Why? Its origins are rooted in Patrick himself. He used the shamrock as a way to show how the trinity works: three separate elements of the same entity. So wherever you are, whether you’re Irish or not, get out there and enjoy the day!

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through MARCH. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

Officers Gayle Minto - President Judy VanDyke Amy Matthias Shelly Schmitz - Treasurer Terry Martin - Secretary/Assistant Treasurer Legal Counsel - Michael Gainer

Please call HPCA OFFICE at 281-463-1216 to reach a board member.

PURPOSE OF HUNTER’S PARK COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION Hunter’s Park Community Association handles the financial and legal affairs of the subdivision. Each lot owner is required to pay an annual maintenance fee which is used to pay street lights; pay taxes on and maintain the common areas, such as the swimming pools, tennis courts, etc.; pay for security; and pay legal expenses incurred to enforce the deed restrictions. The Board meets every other month at 6:30 p.m. in the meeting room at the community building. Residents are welcome to attend. Anyone wishing to place an item on the agenda should call the HPCA office in advance. The Annual Meeting of Members is held on the 4th Thursday of January. Members hold three year staggered terms and are elected. The election process is as follows: 1) Mail in ballots will be mailed out with the Annual Maintenance fee statements. 2) Voting in person will begin on the 1st Monday after the Annual Meeting ending on the following Saturday at 7pm.

HPCA Office

Office Phone: 281 463-1216 Office Hrs: 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Mon- Fri. Closed Weekends and Major Holidays HPCA employs two workers to provide coverage for the office. Every effort is made to have one of the two employees in the office at all times. Occasionally business of the association may require us to be out of the office for a short period of time. If we are out of the office when you call or if you call after hours, please leave a message on the answering machine and your calls will be returned as soon as possible during office hours.

DEED RESTRICTIONS Deed restrictions are strictly enforced by Hunter’s Park Community Association. Copies of the restrictions are available at the association’s office or by mail (call 281 463-1216). Complaint forms are included in every Bear Creek Newsletter for your convenience. The association’s office verifies complaints and writes letters to violators. HPCA will initiate legal action when warranted, to enforce the deed restrictions. ARCHITECTURAL CONTROL You must submit any plans for improvements or modifications of your home to the Hunter’s Park Community Association Office. Your plans will be checked to insure that they comply with the deed restrictions. This includes re-roofing, playforts (8 ft. height limit), temporary storage buildings, etc. Please call the office at 281 463-1216 if you need any additional help or assistance. SECURITY Hunter’s Park Community Association provides additional security currently through a contract with Commissioners Court for four Harris County Constables. HPCA also hires off-duty deputies on an as-needed basis for additional coverage. Please call the Constable’s Office at 281 463-6666 to report any suspicious person, activity or for vacation watch. There is a voluntary $2.00 security contribution on the M.U.D. #6 water bill that goes to each homeowner. The voluntary contributions can only be used to pay for security. This contribution enables HPCA to provide more coverage without raising maintenance fees. Judy - Security Directory - HPCA - (281) 463-1216
