2016 POOL TAGS The 2016 Pool season starts on the weekend of May 14th and follow the season year, closing on Sunday, September 11th. Pool tags will be available Saturday, May 7th, 9 AM to noon, Wednesday, May 11th, 7-9 PM and Saturday, May 14th, 9 AM to noon. We will be using the Orange pool tags again this year and the 2016 stickers will be free to residents that are current with their HOA dues. Pool Tags will be sold for $5 each. Each pool tag will allow 4 people to get in the pool. If you miss our sessions, stickers and tags will be available at PCMI. PCMI does have a $5 handling fee. We ask residents to have a picture ID when they get their tags.

PLEASE, NO SOCCER PLAYING AT RECREATION AREA For several reasons, the soccer goals in the recreation area were removed last year. The area was designed for a playground, the swimming pool and clubhouse, a volleyball court and the tennis courts. Unfortunately soccer playing, with or without the nets, had caused a disturbance to some of our neighbors whose yards back up to the recreation area, especially in the evening hours. Moreover “enthusiastic play” caused damage to the fences resulting in expensive repairs. Each time a broken fence picket had to be removed, then a new one purchased, stained and installed. It was not a big job, but time consuming and costly. The grassy area also was becoming very worn to the point where soon it may have had to be re-sodded. We also had many complaints about soccer being played on the tennis court, causing damage to the tennis nets and preventing residents from peacefully using the courts for tennis. Finally, as has been a problem with our other recreation facilities, we found non-residents using our property for playing soccer. Our sheriff deputy patrols are assisting us when we can identify trespassers. We want our own residents to have access and enjoyment of our recreation facilities for their intended purposes.

MANY PAIRS OF EYES A Sheriff’s deputy has only one pair of eyes. But together, Berkshire residents have a couple of thousand eyes. So when you see any suspicious activity, please call the Sheriff’s Department non-emergency number at 713-2216000 immediately and provide as many details as possible. For emergencies call 911. And please cooperate with law enforcement officers after the fact to help convict criminals. Remember, for a safe community crime prevention is a cooperative effort.

LOCK CAR DOORS AND PUT AWAY VALUABLES

CHILDCARE & PRESCHOOL

Many car burglaries occur because valuables are visible in the cars. Bags, purses, phones, GPS’s and laptops are all invitations to criminals. Even if it takes you only a few minutes to stop at a store or drop off the kids, put valuables out of sight. Some victims make the crime easier by leaving car doors unlocked. Car burglars have been know to move through a neighborhood trying door handles for unlocked cars. Simple advice: always lock them.

ASK FOR DETAILS ABOUT HOW YOUR MONEY IS SPENT Do you realize that the budget for Berkshire is in excess of a half million dollars? That’s right, over $500,000. It is the cost to you and the other homeowners to operate and maintain the Berkshire Community Association. Some of the major expenses are security through a contract with Harris County and additional coverage by direct contracts with Sheriff’s deputies; landscaping maintenance including the irrigation system; operation of the recreation area (pool, tennis courts and playground); utilities including the lighting bill and the professional management company fees, plus all the related administrative expenses. You also bear the cost when some homeowners do not pay their annual assessment fees. In some cases legal action must be taken and legal expenses must be paid before delinquent debts are collected. Such action is taken because some homeowners would leave the rest of us bearing their share of the expenses. You have a stake in your community and you have a voice if you care enough to exercise it. We all have a common interest in seeing that our money is spent prudently with adequate internal controls and that Berkshire remains an attractive and comfortable place to live. When you see a problem, let it be known, but come with a positive suggestion for improvement. Remember we are all in this together and want the best for Berkshire.

PARKING ON THE STREET

The Association receives numerous complaints a day regarding cars parked in the street. Parking in the street not only looks bad but also creates a safety hazard. Please refrain from parking in the street as it is against the Deed Restrictions. Vehicles should be parked in the garage or in the driveway at all times.

the bag. When you buy ‘loose’ mulch that is trucked to your home, you are also buying ants, roaches, termites, etc… Spend a little more on bagged material and save lots of future pest problems. Keep your mulch at least 4” - 6” below the top of your homes exposed foundation edge/side. This will aid in minimizing pests in your home and allow for quick and accurate termite inspections.

We also love our community. That’s another reason the association is committed to enforcing the county leash law - so all residents may enjoy our community.

Shrubs, Flowers and groundcovers Trim all shrubs/plants at least 12” - 18” back from your home. Do your best to create a plant free zone that is 18” - 24” wide around your home. The exception is your lawn - it can grow up next to the slab as long as you keep it 4” - 6” below the top of the slab. The most conducive to termite infestation are groundcover plantings, growing high against your homes exterior or (especially) ivy that grows on your walls.

We trust we can count on you for voluntary compliance with the leash law. We don’t like to call animal control, but we won’t have any choice if your dog is running free.

NOTICE TO PET OWNERS

We love dogs - we really do. That’s why the association is committed to enforcing the county leash law on association property. According to the U.S. Humane Society, an unleashed dog has an average life span of less than four years. Allowing your dog to run free threatens your dog’s health and welfare and the happiness it brings to you.

Please be certain that shrubs are trimmed away from address stones. This is very important for 911 emergency vehicles.

Please refrain from parking vehicles on the flat curbs. Vehicles parked on the curbs eventually cause damage and deterioration. Further note that storage of vehicles on streets or within road right-of-way is specifically prohibited.

Trees - Spray your trees at least twice annually. The spring spray eliminates overwintering pests and fungi while preparing trees to resist the pest onslaught of summer with residual pesticides. The fall spray also kills pests from the summer, prevents most fungi from occurring over the winter and puts your valuable asset off to a healthy winter’s dormancy. Lawn - Spring is the perfect time to do a fungicide treatment to stop brown patch in its tracks along with other fungi. If your

Most important is proper watering: • Water once per week (unless you get a 1/2” rain or more - then do not water.) • Water heavily (1” - 2”) for total lawn coverage. • In severe drought, water every 5th day. • Water from 5 AM to 7 AM in the morning - NOT AT NIGHT. • A heavy deep weekly watering makes the turf grow deeper, stronger and more drought resistant roots. • Less watering also saves you money!

LAWN CARE TIPS With lawns now growing at a rapid pace, mowing becomes a common lawn care practice. Although typically overlooked in terms of importance, mowing does have a major influence on lawn quality and potential problems. That’s why following a few basic guidelines are important to assure lawns are mowed properly. Proper mowing height is the first basic guideline to consider. Perhaps the most common mistake is mowing lawns too short. For most situations a mowing height between 2 to 3 inches is suggested. Mow closer to 3 inches as summer gets closer. Lawns mowed at higher heights tend to have deeper roots, less weed problems and look much better. The second major mowing guideline is to base mowing frequency on the rate of grass growth. Do not remove more than one-third of the grass leaf in any one cutting. This may call for mowing more than once a week during cool, wet weather. Assuming lawns are mowed on a regular basis, there is no need to collect clippings. Clippings should readily filter back down into the lawn if the lawn is mowed often enough, following the rule of onethird. Returned in this manner, clippings readily decompose (contain 75 - 80 percent water) and do not cause thatch. Clippings also recycle nutrients, in particular nitrogen, so less fertilizer is needed. Finally, use a quality mower with a sharp blade. Selecting a mower can involve a number of factors, many being personal preference. Reel type mowers actually give the best cut, but are usually expensive and difficult to maintain. Rotary mowers are the most widely used kind of mower sold for home lawn use.

IMPORTANCE OF GUTTER CLEANING The effects of clogged gutters costs millions of dollars each year in water damage, basement flooding and foundation erosion, not to mention that they are a perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes, termites and mold. Gutter cleaning is an ongoing and very important home maintenance task that should not be ignored until the fall season. Most home experts recommend that you clean your gutters three to four times each year (spring, summer, early and late fall). All deciduous trees produce organic litter in the form of buds, flowers, seeds, small bits of bark, twigs and leaves on a never-ending annual cycle. Evergreens are just as bad as they shed needles and other bits of debris throughout the year. In addition, after each rainstorm, asphalt from roof shingles runs off into your gutters, inevitably causing them to clog.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ?

We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through April. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

SALUTE TO OUR HEROES GALA On February 13, 2016, the Cy-Fair Educational Foundation (CFEF) held its 8th Annual Salute to Our Heroes Gala at the Omni Hotel Houston Westside raising over $100,000 to benefit graduating seniors from the Cypress Fairbanks ISD. Cypress Woods High School AFJROTC was chosen to Present the Colors and the Missing Man Table and Honors Ceremony. Tina Clinkenbeard, CFISD Teacher, sang the National Anthem. State Representative Allen Fletcher gave the invocation and Senior Ryan Lancaster, from Cy-Fair High School, played TAPS. Kevin “Dauber” Lacz, former Navy SEAL sniper and combat medic was our guest speaker for the evening. Lacz spoke from the heart about his experiences as a Navy SEAL and the impact his service in the military had on his life. As a Certified Physician Assistant, Lacz uses his past experiences to facilitate his work in medicine and charity and actively seeks to support service members and veterans in his community. Lacz inspired us all with his motivational story, winning attitude and continued commitment to service. Joe Myers Ford Lincoln generously underwrote this year’s Salute to Our Heroes Gala and we are grateful that they have agreed to underwrite this event in 2017. Cypress Fairbanks Medical Center Hospital and North Cypress Medical Center were Major General Sponsors this year. Salute to Our Heroes has raised more than half a million dollars over the past eight years, funding several endowed scholarships for students graduating from the Cypress Fairbanks ISD.
