ANNUAL HOMEOWNERS’ ASSOCIATION MEETING The date for the Annual Meeting has been scheduled for Tuesday, November 29, 2011 at 7:00 PM. The meeting will take place at the Cinco Ranch Church of Christ, located adjacent to the subdivision at 6655 S. Mason Road. Please plan to attend. Look for an agenda in the mail in late October/ early November.

COUNTRY SIDE MOBILE VET CLINIC VISITS CANYON GATE Mark your calendars! The Country Side Mobile Vet Clinic is scheduled to return to Canyon Gate on Saturday, November 5th, from 3:00 to 4:30 pm at the recreation center. Dr. Regina Jamieson is the visiting veterinarian and is licensed by the Texas State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners. Dr. Jamieson offers packages that include all annual vaccinations, heartworm tests and prevention and flea control. Save a trip to the vet and bring your pet to the Mobile Vet Clinic. If you have any questions, you may contact Dr. Jamieson at 713-492-8045.

WILDLIFE Please note that residents in nearby subdivisions have reported sighting of coyotes. All residents should be on the lookout and keep a careful watch on their pets, especially near the banks of bayous. Coyotes usually stay away from humans; however, apparently, due to the extreme drought, these predators are coming closer to human habitation looking for food and water. They are wild animals and when hungry or cornered, may be very aggressive. Small dogs and cats can be very susceptible. If you have pets outside, please try to make arrangements for them to be inside or in a protective enclosure. If you let your pets outside to attend to their business, please don’t leave them long. We do not want another pet to fall victim. Now is also a good time to check the integrity of your fence - even if you don’t live near the edge of the community. Coyotes can’t get into back yards unless boards are broken and missing or the fence is in need of repair. While coyotes are wild animals and therefore, unpredictable, they are generally skittish and normally run from humans. Coyotes, along with other predators, do play a vital role in the ecosystem; “thinning out” the coyote population may actually have a detrimental effect by allowing the rodent population (and other pests) to proliferate.

Snakes

Homeowners need to be aware that Texas is home to many snakes, including venomous and non-venomous varieties. With the natural areas surrounding the community, Canyon Gate is especially prone to snakes. Please be vigilant when in grassy areas that snakes may hide. If you should see a snake, please do not approach it - they will not normally attack or bite unless provoked. Measures you can take to keep snakes away include the following:

Be Thankful, Happy Thanksgiving! 1

• Eliminate debris such as wood or rock piles on the property. • Cut down heavy brush or trim back hedges. • Seal small gaps under doors or decks, etc.

RECREATION CENTER RENTAL

REMINDER ABOUT PARKING REGULATIONS

The recreation center has a room available for parties, meeting, reunions, etc. A signed contract plus a $300 security deposit will hold your reservation. Homeowners must be current on their dues (or payment plans) and rental fees must be received prior to the party. The rental rate is $35 an hour with a twohour minimum. The key for the clubhouse is to be signed out and returned to the guards in the guardhouse. Please READ THE CONTRACT CAREFULLY before signing - this is a binding legal document and the rules and regulations stipulated in the contract will be enforced. Call the onsite office for additional information.

The Association would like to remind everyone that there is NO CURBSIDE PARKING between the hours of 11:00 PM - 9:00 AM. VEHICLES IN VIOLATION WILL BE STICKERED. If vehicles are found repeatedly in violation, they will be towed at the owner’s expense. These parking regulations were put in to place to alleviate the difficulty school buses were having navigating the neighborhood and to allow a time for problem-free residential access for emergency vehicles. Safety issues relating to morning work traffic and children going to school, garbage trucks, bike lanes and homeowner complaints about blocked driveways were also concerns.

Remember to bring your trash home with you after a party - the clubhouse trashcans are being filled to overflowing regularly. Fines will start being assessed if the recreation center trashcans are filled up with party debris.

HARRIS COUNTY TOLL TAGS Please call the onsite office (281-492-6020) or email us to register your Harris County toll tag (phardilek@ccbpropertymanagement. com). The following information is required: Name, Address, Vehicle Make & Model and Old and New EZ Tag Numbers. Please do not give tag information to the guards - they do not have access to the gate computer. PLEASE REMEMBER to have your old tag number available when you are registering a new tag, so we can remove it from the system. The sticker-type EZ tags can be programmed into the system. However, the signal is not as powerful as that of the batterypowered tags. Please approach the gate slowly and stay as close to the left median as possible (that is where the reader is located); the new tags can’t be read by the system until you are very close to the gate.

2

Please remember that angle or perpendicular parking is against deed restrictions. It is also a violation of local ordinance. Please remember that the front and back wheels of a vehicle must be parallel and within 18 inches of the curb. Angle or perpendicular parking may prohibit police, fire or any other emergency personnel from ingress or egress. Violators will have their vehicles stickered and if necessary, towed, if the vehicle is repeatedly found in violation. There is NO PARKING anytime in bicycle lanes. Exceptions to the street parking policy are made only to out of town guests with PRIOR NOTICE given to the office at 281-492-6020. Be sure to give your name and home address, the year, make, model and license plate number of the car, as well as the specific dates that car will be parked in the street.

STREET LIGHT MAINTENANCE To report a streetlight that is not working, call CenterPoint Energy at 713-207-2222. You will need to report both the number on the base of the pole (six digits) and the street address. You may also report outages online at www.centerpointenergy.com/outage.

These EZ tags contain a battery that should last for, approximately, 3 years. The HOA offers a one-year warranty on these tags. If your EZ tag stops working after the one-year time limit, a new EZ tag will need to be purchased.

Animals / Pets CONTROL Please respect your neighbors’ yards and their personal space ….. remember that pets must be confined to a fenced backyard or within the house and must not allowed to bark all night long or cause a nuisance to neighbors. They must be on a leash at all times when away from this contained environment. It is also the pet owner’s responsibility, when walking their pet within the subdivision, to keep ALL areas free of pet debris. Please remember that cats must also be confined. Animal control can be reached by calling 281-342-1512 and will pick up strays and/or unconfined pets.

HAVE A PERFECT THANKSGIVING! Want to be the perfect holiday host or guest? Check out these tips on holiday entertaining: If you are the host: • Whenever anyone offers to help or bring a dish, say, “Yes, thank you!” • Use hollowed bread loaves as serving containers for cheeses, dips, olives, chips and small sandwiches. • Once the table settings and centerpiece are in place, sit in each chair to assure comfort • Include favorite kids’ foods, especially those they can eat neatly with their fingers. • Provide at least one low-calorie dish and a vegetarian option. Then serve a sinful dessert. • Completely clear the table of all dishes from previous courses before serving dessert. • Keep club soda nearby to clean spots or stains on the tablecloth or clothing. If you are a guest: • Arrive no earlier than the time the host has announced and no later than half an hour after the time. • Plan to stay about an hour after dinner unless travel plans or sleepy children necessitate leaving earlier. • Bring a gift and write a note of thanks afterward. • Offer to help set up for dinner and to clean afterward. • Notify the host of any special dietary needs - if you are a vegetarian, diabetic or allergic to common foods. • The best potluck dishes are those that need minimal preparation in the host’s kitchen, can be served at room temperature and require only a fork to eat.

Who knew reading the paper for five whole minutes could feel like a gift from above? Having children can make you appreciate life. Be thankful for your kids! Tammy White – www.associatedcontent.com

Helping Others During the Holidays With the winter holiday season approaching, many people like to think of ways to give back to the community and those in need at this time of year. But with gift giving, winter holiday parties and other commitments also commanding your attention, it’s hard to find time to help others. Here are some tips to make giving back easy. In With The New, Out With The Old The winter holiday is a good time to go through the items you have in your home and decide if you no longer need them. With presents coming into your home, there’s a good possibility that you can get rid of some of your older things.

6

Canyon Gate

November 2011

You have many options for donating these used items: As you take your fall clothes out of the closet and replace them with winter ones, ask yourself if you’ll wear them again. That’s especially true of winter coats and jackets, which are always in high demand at aid agencies. For your old clothes, look for clothing drives. Many shelters and faith-based organizations accept donations year round and they make a strong push for more donations as the weather gets cooler. They appreciate it if you clean them before donating them. For furniture, look to thrift shops or other non-profit organizations. Many of them will pick up your furniture for you, so call ahead and see if you can save yourself the trouble of lugging your furniture around. As you’re shopping for your winter holiday dinners over the next couple of months, stop by the canned food aisle and pick up some extra food to give away. Donate them to organizations that support soup kitchens or run “meals on wheels” programs. If you have older children, they probably have many toys they don’t play with anymore. Encourage them to choose some to give to kids who won’t be getting any new toys this time of year. Many organizations are especially in need of donated toys this time of year. If you’ve been really good this year, perhaps someone will give you a new car, allowing you to donate your old one to a charity. In general, larger charitable organizations accept cars, and sometimes boats, as donations and some are even willing to pick it up for you. Check Out Charities. One of the easiest ways to help others is to donate to charitable organizations. If you aren’t personally familiar with the organization you plan on giving to, check them out with your local Better Business Bureau to make sure your donation does as much good as you hope it will. Hassle-Free Donations As you go around gift shopping over the next two months, keep an eye out for opportunities to make donations. Many stores allow charitable organizations to set up outside their doors or even place donation bins by the cash register. Dropping some money in is so simple and doesn’t take any time out of your busy day. And here’s an easy way to get your friends involved: If you’re throwing a party in the next couple months, ask your guests to bring one canned good or toy along with them. Then you can take their donations to an organization for them. They’ll likely appreciate the opportunity to make a hassle-free donation. www.homemadesimple.com

Tips for “Black Friday” Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving and is known as the busiest shopping day of the year. The name comes from an accounting term - red ink means a negative profit margin; black ink means a positive profit. Check out these tips on maximizing Black Friday: 1. Check Out the Ads: Your local Thanksgiving Day newspaper will be packed with ads, coupons, and circulars. This will be your number one source to local Black Friday savings and it will also help you organize your day to maximize savings. 2. Do Your Research Before Friday: If you are hoping to scoop up a deal on Friday on a big-ticket item, get your research out of the way asap. Being knowledgeable about the products you want to buy will help you avoid being suckerpunched with loud advertising for poor products. 3. Compare Prices: Utilize price-comparison Internet shopping sites to assist you in comparing product prices. Compare the “options” included with the product. Some retailers will low-ball the advertised price on a stripped down product and then you will be charged extra for the necessary parts. 4. Early Bird Shopper Discounts: The Early Bird Shopper is the real winner on Black Friday. Stores offering Early Day Shopper Specials, but with no “rain checks”, which means once they run out of the products, you are out of luck.

7

Canyon Gate

November 2011

5. Night Owl Discounts - Thanksgiving Eve: Internet shoppers can beat the Early Birds by shopping online in the pre-dawn hours of Black Friday. Many retailers will be posting their Black Friday specials, which can be ordered, online and picked-up at your local store. Special “Web Only” deals will also be available starting as early as Thanksgiving eve. 6. Bring the Ads: Many stores offer a “lowest-price” guarantee; be sure to bring a copy of the exact product being advertised for less. 7. Know the Store Policies: Knowing the store policies on returns can help you determine where to buy. Many retailers are including restocking fees and shorter return deadlines. Almost all of the major retail chains require receipts for returns and exchanges and many keep a database of individuals who abuse return policies. 8. Gift Receipts: Gift receipts generally include a description of the item purchased but do not disclose the price paid. Including a gift-receipt should help insure a hassle-free return experience for gift recipients. 9. Cash is King: Enough said.

WE desperately need loving and caring Katy resident mentors for the 150 + boys that do not have have anyone visiting them! One CROSSROADS mentor says, “Volunteering through CROSSROADS has been a truly rewarding experience. I’ve mentored some really good kids who made some really bad choices and it’s been gratifying to get to know them, earn their trust and watch them grow.” Please consider devoting just one hour a week to the future of a needy child, many times you are their only visitors. SIRE, Houston’s Therapeutic Equestrian Centers The only time our clients say they feel free is when they’re riding a horse in a brisk walk around the arena or driving a carriage through the wooded pastures or feel the nudge of a horse’s muzzle at their shoulder saying, “I’m glad to see you, my friend.” Nothing else can compare with therapy on horseback. Equineassisted activities improve physical balance and coordination, mental acuity, emotional stability and social interactions. At SIRE, we see miracles on horseback happen every day. The work of our dedicated volunteers helps guarantee that children and adults with disabilities in the Greater Houston Area will have the programs they need to live longer, healthier, more productive lives. In addition to their weekly work in the arena, many of our volunteers donate their time and talents at fund-raising events such as our annual Ride-A-Thon and the yearly Trailblazers Luncheon. Volunteers are on hand during the NARHA on-site certification and annual SIRE Show-Off and volunteers are vital to our Clients’ successes at the Top Hands Horse Show, during the Houston Rodeo and competition at the regional and state Special Olympics. How would you feel if you saved a kid’s life? StandUp For Kids is an all volunteer organization dedicated to saving the lives of at-risk and homeless kids through volunteer outreach efforts. Our volunteers search the streets in order to find, stabilize and otherwise help homeless and street kids improve their lives. Every day throughout the US thirteen kids die on the streets from abuse, disease and suicide. According to recent statistics Houston has up to 2,500 kids living on the streets at any given time. Texas has the highest rate of homeless youth in the U.S. StandUp For Kids needs supplies for our Houston program, which provides food, clothing, counseling and a safe environment for the homeless youth of Houston. If you or your organization would like to hold a food or clothing drive for StandUp For Kids, please contact me at HeatherE@standupforkids.org to learn more about StandUp For Kids or how you can help, visit our website at www.standupforkids. org. The single greatest need, for homeless and street kids is our continuous caring and real support. We must convince them that we care, we want them back and we want to help them get off the streets.

November is Epilepsy Awareness Month Many people are surprised to find out that Epilepsy is as common as breast cancer and takes as many lives each year. It is a terrifying and potentially fatal disease that carries tremendous stigma. Epilepsy affects approximately 150,000 people throughout the greater Houston, Dallas and Ft. Worth areas. • Epilepsy and Seizures affect almost 3 MILLION Americans of all ages - more than Multiple Sclerosis, Cerebral Palsy, Muscular Dystrophy and Parkinson’s disease combined! • 200,000 new cases of Epilepsy are diagnosed every year. • 10% of Americans will experience a seizure at least once in their lives. • Each year in the U.S. 45,000 children under the age of 15 develop Epilepsy. • A patient’s first seizure will occur without warning. • EPILEPSY IS NOT CONTAGIOUS. • Medications do not cure epilepsy, but they may help control or prevent seizures. Medications help between 50-70% of patients. • In Texas, if you are diagnosed with Epilepsy, your doctor must certify that you are seizure free for a period of 6 months before you can drive again. • The color for Epilepsy Awareness is Purple. • THERE IS NO CURE FOR EPILEPSY… YET! You can learn more and help find a cure at www.epilepsyfoundation.org.

One mentor, one student, one hour per week. KEYS brings adult role models into Katy ISD schools to motivate, encourage and inspire students on the brink of success. Mentors meet with their student on campus at a predesignated time each week. As mentor and student build their relationship, they decide together how to spend their mentoring time. Whether spent playing games, reading or just talking, that one hour a week makes a tremendous difference in the life of a child. To be a KEYS Mentor, you need: • A belief in the potential of every child • Criminal history background check in compliance with the FCRA • One hour per week to spend with a child, on campus during the school day, during the school year • Participation in a brief campus KEYS orientation before you begin • Successful completion of a KEYS application and subsequent approval process

KATY INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT www.katyisd.org

Students Continue the Tradition of Strong Performance on AP Exams Katy ISD’s tradition of increasing student participation and strong performance on Advanced Placement (AP) exams continues as the district recently learned that each one of its six high school campuses showed an increase in the number of students participating in the exams. In addition, every high school campus exceeded the state and national percentage of AP students making a qualifying score of 3 or better on the exams. Katy ISD is among the 388 U.S. public school districts (one of only 23 in Texas) to be listed on the 2011 College Board AP Achievement List. This list identifies districts that simultaneously achieved increases in access to AP courses while maintaining or improving the rate of students earning a score of 3 or better on the exams – the score that generally qualifies a student for college credit. In May 2011, more than 3,000 Katy ISD students took more than 7,200 AP exams, with 79 percent of the exams earning a score of 3 or better. This reflects a 24 percent increase from 2010 in the number of exams earning these high scores. Advanced Placement and PreAP courses are designed to challenge students beyond grade level academic courses and prepare them for success in future advanced coursework. Katy ISD recognizes that support and encouragement from the campus, the teacher, and parents are critical to student success. Therefore, the district follows an inclusive enrollment model for AP and PreAP courses that provides support systems for student success.

Have you ever wished school lunches weren’t so full of junk food? Have you ever seen Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution? There is a group for you right here in Katy! We are fortunate that Katy ISD cares about our kids and has a large budget base to work with. Let’s encourage them to include healthier food choices on school menus. Join us from the beginning as we start to gather members and momentum to spread the word that it IS possible to reduce processed foods, remove flavored milk and increase fresh fruits and veggies. If you believe it is possible to feed school aged children something other than processed chicken nuggets, stuffed crust pizza and chocolate milk then please bring your energy, your ideas and your connections and join us! Our kids deserve the best, after all, that’s why we chose to put them in Katy ISD! For more information: merag94@gmail. com or find us on Facebook: Katy’s Own School Lunch Revolution.

Winterizing Your Home Preparing Your Home for Winter (Source: About.com)

The fall Equinox is a good time of year to start thinking about preparing your home for winter, because as temperatures begin to dip, your home will require maintenance to keep it in tip-top shape through the winter. Autumn is invariably a prelude to falling winter temperatures, regardless of where you live. It might rain or snow or, as David Letterman says, “Fall is my favorite season in Los Angeles, watching the birds change color and fall from the trees.” Did you know there is only one state in the United States where the temperatures have never dipped below zero? Give up? It’s Hawaii. Here are ten tips to help you prepare your home for winter: 1) Heating System Inspection • Call an HVAC professional to inspect your furnace. • Stock up on air filters and change them monthly. • Consider switching out your thermostat for a programmable thermostat. • Remove all flammable material from the area surrounding your furnace.

2) Get the Fireplace Ready • Cap or screen the top of the chimney to keep out rodents and birds. • If the chimney hasn’t been cleaned for a while, call a chimney sweep to remove soot and creosote. • Buy firewood or chop wood. Store it in a dry place away from the exterior of your home. • Inspect the fireplace damper for proper opening and closing. • Check the mortar between bricks and tuck-point, if necessary. 3) Check the Exterior, Doors and Windows • Inspect exterior for crevice cracks and exposed entry points around pipes; seal them. • Use weather-stripping around doors to prevent cold air from entering the home and caulk windows. • Replace cracked glass in windows and, if you end up replacing the entire window, prime and paint exposed wood. 4) Inspect Roof, Gutters & Downspouts • If your weather temperature will fall below 32 degrees in the winter, adding extra insulation to the attic will prevent warm air from creeping to your roof and causing ice dams. • Check flashing to ensure water cannot enter the home. • Replace worn roof shingles or tiles. • Clean out the gutters and use a hose to spray water down the downspouts to clear away debris. • Consider installing leaf guards on the gutters or extensions on the downspouts to direct water away from the home.

Mice can slip through space as thin as a dime. • Inspect sill plates for dry rot or pest infestation. • Secure crawlspace entrances. 7) Install Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors • Some cities require a smoke detector in every room. • Buy extra smoke detector batteries and change them when daylight savings ends. • Install a carbon monoxide detector near your furnace and / or water heater. • Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to make sure they work. • Buy a fire extinguisher or replace an extinguisher older than 10 years.

8) Prevent Plumbing Freezes • Locate your water main in the event you need to shut it off in an emergency. • Drain all garden hoses. • Insulate exposed plumbing pipes. • Drain air conditioner pipes and if your AC has a water shut-off valve, turn it off. • If you go on vacation, leave the heat on, set to at least 55 degrees. 9) Prepare Landscaping & Outdoor Surfaces • Trim trees if branches hang too close to the house or electrical wires. • Ask a gardener when your trees should be pruned to prevent winter injury. • Plant spring flower bulbs and lift bulbs that cannot winter over such as dahlias in areas where the ground freezes. • Seal driveways, brick patios and wood decks. • Move sensitive potted plants indoors or to a sheltered area. 10) Prepare an Emergency Kit • Buy indoor candles and matches / lighter for use during a power shortage. • Find the phone numbers for your utility companies and tape them near your phone or inside the phone book. • Buy a battery back-up to protect your computer and sensitive electronic equipment. • Store extra bottled water and non-perishable food supplies (including pet food, if you have a pet), blankets and a first-aid kit in a dry and easy-to-access location. • Prepare an evacuation plan in the event of an emergency.

Slow Cookers are a Cook’s Best Friend By The Paula Deen Test Kitchen

More leisure time and a homemade meal? Save money on groceries, use less electricity, and enjoy better flavor? You bet! And with a slow cooker, you don’t even have to be there while your dinner cooks. With the invention of the original Crock-Pot® in the 1970s, we’ve been able to layer ingredients in our slow cookers, leave the house for work or play, and come home, hours later, to an inviting aroma-filled house and evening meal. Rival still manufactures the Crock-Pot®, but many other manufacturers are in the game with competitive models. The “crockpot” moniker has become an icon for any slow cooker. These days, choices are not limited to 2-temperature manual units; they also come programmable, with multiple time and temperature settings, countdown timers, built-in thermometers, and automatic temperature shifts to warm in case you are late getting home. There are slow cooker sizes and settings to fit your family’s individual needs. Though shape is not necessarily a deal breaker when purchasing, it is a consideration. A money-saving attribute of slow cooking is that tougher, less expensive meats are rendered meltingly tender and juicy. Larger roasts and whole chickens fit better into an ovalshaped model and will cook more evenly, although you can trim them to fit into a round one. It’s easy to adapt your favorite oven or stovetop recipes to slow cooker cooking. Regardless of yield, if your dish normally cooks in 15 to 30 minutes, you can count on 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 hours cooking in a slow cooker on High power or 4 to 6 hours on Low. If it takes 35 to 45 minutes, you should allow 2 to 3 hours on High power or 6 to 8 hours on Low. Main dishes like roasts and stews that cook up to 3 hours will take 4 to 5 hours on High or more than 8 hours on Low. For instance, Sweet Merlot Beef Stew should cook in about 4 hours on High or 8 to 10 hours on low; after you brown the meat, add everything to the slow cooker for the total cooking time, including the onions and mushrooms. Other tips for successful recipe conversion:

Do you have a loved one losing their vision, legally or totally blind? HIOS can help them be more independent! We provide:

*To eliminate excess fat, remove skin from poultry and trim excess fat from meats before cooking. Pre-brown meats, and drain before adding to the crockpot, especially ground meats. *Brown chops and roasts to caramelize the outsides for richer flavor and attractive appearance. For Low Country Smothered Pork Chops, prepare the chops as directed and layer in the cooker with the strips of green pepper, onion, garlic, half of the broth, and Worcestershire. Add more broth as needed to thin the gravy. *Vegetables, especially roots like potatoes, rutabagas, and carrots, cook more slowly than meats, so cut pieces uniformly and add them at the beginning. (It can take 8 to 10 hours on Low for a “baked” potato to cook until tender!) Italian Chicken and Vegetable Soup is a perfect example; just put all the ingredients into the slow cooker, reserving half a can of broth to add at the end of cooking, if necessary. Let it cook 2 to 2 1/2 hours on High or 4 to 6 hours on Low.

• • • • • • •

*Most stews, soups, and other braised dishes require less liquid. If you end up with too much, pour it into a saucepan and reduce it until flavorful and thickened. If you need more liquid, it can be added at the end of the cooking time.

281-855-6697

*Cheese, milk, cream, and other dairy: Add dairy products close to the end of cooking.

*Spices tend to loose their power during long, slow cooking; be ready to re-season towards the end.

*Most slow cooker liners are removable, allowing you to fill it up to a day before cooking. Remove the stone liner and assemble the casserole in it; cover and refrigerate until you are ready to cook. You can prepare Chicken and Rice Casserole ahead and cook it 1 1/2 to 2 hours on High or 4 to 6 hours on Low or until it is hot, stirring in cheese during the last hour of cooking.

*Uncooked rice, however, requires standard liquid amounts. It cooks fast, so add it to the slow cooker during the last hour of cooking on High or 2 hours on Low. It is better to cook pasta separately and add it before serving.
